It's also important to note that GS is making the Mavs work hard on both offense and defense. That makes an enormous impact on open shooting as well.

Hence, why Curry running around both on ball and off ball is a nightmare. You need to work so hard on defense and have multiple ppl chasing Curry just to try and have a chance. It's not easy to hit open outside shots when the lights are on you at the biggest stage the deeper you go into the playoffs. Those role players who are even 3pt specialists may not miss during shoot around practices and make many of those shots during regular season, but playoffs game time is a different animal with the national/international media watching, lights on you, and pressure playoff moments........ psychology plays a role on role players. You see Luka, Curry, Thompson make those open shots and tough shots, that's what separates between stars and role players, the stars are just wired differently, they thrive under the biggest stage instead of wilting under pressure like the role players.

These kinds of teams are strong when they hit their shots, but are perpetually screwed when they aren't

The Warriors have so much experience playing these offenses. First half they’re pretty much daring the role players to hit three’s shots early. Some top of mind thoughts: 1) if shuffling between different defensive schemes unsettles the offence, then on the whole it's probably worth it. If there's a particular scheme that is underperforming, running it fewer minutes might be preferable to not running it at all. This is essentially Mark Cubans explanation of how Mavs zoned against LeBron in 2011 2) If running the zone gets the ball out of the hands of the primary playmaker in a heliocentric offence it's probably worth it, even if it concedes wide open 3s to the role players. 3) the zone hides Curry well on defence which will be important against Butler or Tatum

Hi coach. Just noticed that one way Dallas or other teams can slow down the warrior offense is to pressure Draymond Green when he’s at the top of the key. I’ve seen so many of their plays where everyone is focused on the warriors’ movement while Draymond just stands at the top with very little pressure

Right. Note also that getting the ball out of Luka's hands, even if it leads to a scramble and an 'open' 3, is better then a Luka kick out to the same shooter. I'm told it's because of how uniquely fast his passes arrive. Players get used to a certain kind of 'open.'

I think the Mavs previously playing a 7 game series, playing every other day in this series, and having to guard the constant GS ball movement has tired their legs.

Why shouldn't I believe the Dallas shooting isn't just regression to the mean? Many of the Mavs shooters are shooting better in the playoffs than they shot during the regular season. Or, maybe it's just fatigue. It las if the Warriors offense makes the other team more than other NBA offenses.
@michaelahurt
@michaelahurt Жыл бұрын
Because it was just Luka and Kleber. Everyone else was right where they were during the season. That 35% is misleading. The guys actually playing in this series were 37%. Then 37% against Utah and 38% vs Phoenix if you take out game 7 when the Suns just didn't guard them. Now they are at 32.6% It could be fatigue, particularly Bullock chasing around CP and now Curry, but there's also no way for us to really know who is or isn't fatigued; I'm sure all these guys on all four teams are fatigued at this point. That being said they are now 37.3% for the playoffs and were 38.5% coming into this series so it's not not regression BUT I'd argue it's just as much, if not more, normal variance and bad luck.

It's a bit like the 2011 Mavs for Lebron. Although Luka is better at shooting, his average speed makes him vulnerable to shahow from other defenders. One of the better way to attack zone would be a big wing attack at high post. Lacking wing/big scorers is Mav's big weakness now

The real X factor these series is Kevon Loney. Hes able to control rebounds both offensively and defensively, sets good screens and knock the easy looks he gets. Another underrated guy is Otto porter jr, hes a spark plug everytime he gets in the game, imo they should switch to him more when Green starts getting upset and making mistakes.

Mavericks have missed so many wide open 3s games 1 and 3. GSW has been great on defense but Mavs are killing themselves with the amount of easy shots they are missing.
@Makarizomen
@Makarizomen Жыл бұрын
I can second that. I feel like there's also a time where the mavs need too find their way into the paint. GS hasn't been as efficient from 3 either and they've changed a little and have been rim running. That a key difference.
@Treadston3
@Treadston3 Жыл бұрын
They are shook. Almost everyone not named Luka Doncic on that roster has had trouble playing under all this pressure, and that's not surprise considering Luka was molded by this type of pressure. They rest of the team has never been on a stage this big before, they probably never expected themselves to get this far either. Unfortunately they're facing an extremely good team that is forged around a core that has an absurd amount of high level play-off experience stacked on top of talent that is second to none. So all the props to GSW's defense that has made every aspect of Luka's game a lot harder than it usually is. And even more props for them putting their versatility on full display, showing that they're more than just a 3 point shooting team. They've never been the highest on 3 pt volume, but that seems to be a thing that most people seem to somehow think of them as. With all that being said, just by the eye test, this does feel like the most that the Warriors have ran their offense oriented around scoring in the mid-range and paint despite having 2 of the greatest shooters of all time.
@bandoogiemanz
@bandoogiemanz Жыл бұрын
Someone posted earlier that the team percentage for 3pointers this series is right around their playoff average which is 37% or so. The total amount of makes or misses is only one aspect of it. It's not only how many you make, but when you make them. Easier to make shots when some have already fallen or you have a huge lead. But can you make them, when the game is close and the sphincters starts to tighten up?
@DrProfessorWeed
@DrProfessorWeed Жыл бұрын
@@Makarizomen Totally. It bothered me how these guys weren't attacking close outs, especially hard and bad close outs and they finally started doing that more in games 4 and 5. It's not like it's that hard either, like ya'll are in the NBA, you can attack off the catch and get in the paint lol. DFS really did a good job I thought, he's a good athlete and shouldn't just be shooting 3s the whole game.
@DrProfessorWeed
@DrProfessorWeed Жыл бұрын
@@Treadston3 I disagree, I don't think they were shook, they were just simply out matched. Luka was great for the most part but his ass needs to get in shape, it's embarrassing to watch him struggle just getting up the court. I was rewatching his Euro League stuff and I completely forgot just how good of an athlete he actually was prior to the NBA. He's obviously no LeBron but the kid has speed in the open floor and his first step is really good. He can become a decent shot blocker and defender if he just gets in shape, there really is no excuse for him to be 20-30lbs overweight. I also think he's in parted limited because of these weight/conditioning issues on offense. Like he never ever shoots going right but back in the day he actually would pull up going right and even do step backs going right. I get he's a righty so naturally he's going to want to shoot going left but you gotta at least be willing to sometimes shoot going right because it makes your game way too predicable. GSW did a terrific job defensively. This is the first time he's had multiple bad games in a series and we gotta give credit to GSW schemes and players for really slowing Luka down and making him work harder than usual.

As a Warriors fan, we got super lucky they rimmed out like 5 shots at least..... but I think it is because we made them uncomfortable in the series so the team should get some sort of credit, but ya they missed a lot of shots, but they did seem more open in phoenix series.

So I have watched a lot of Warriors basketball over the past 20 years. I have also watched this channel and some others to understand things better schematically. I see the Warriors is having an advantage in 2 areas: 1 - Persistence: One of the hardest things is to provide consistent effort when the other side is scoring. I think this is a completely overlooked skill. 2 - Execution: Frankly the Warriors are making fewer errors with their scheme than the Mavs are with their scheme. This ends up in what Steve Kerr always calls the "possession game". By this, Dallas is a perfect opponent for the Warriors. The Grizzlies are the worst kind of opponent. The Warriors win (in Steve's view) if they can win (or often keep close) the possession battle. This means how many shots does each side take in a game. Turnovers and rebounds are the problems that the Warriors always have to solve. With their offensive skill set, they should score a certain points per possession. If they can outscore the other team in points per possession, then all they have to to is have the same or more possessions. Why Dallas is a perfect opponent is that they are offering almost no defensive intensity. They are getting beat on the perimeter and have no rim protection. Memphis is all athleticism (rebounding, steals, deflections, etc.). That plays into the worst habits that Golden State has.

which is why they struggled when ja was out because they have to adjust their attacks and defense that is primarily targeting ja on the floor and it is proven by stats that they played good even better without him defensively.

Dallas also has no rhythm or flow to their offense at this point. At this point these open shots have more weight to them because that’s all these role players are getting. No easy penetration for easy shots so now there’s more pressure to hit that shot. Plus that Suns 7 game series had to have tired some of their legs
