Not a big issue, but I assume you have in mind IJN Yamato and Musashi which by all the figures on Wiki, admittedly not the most reliable source, the QEs have greater displacement. Certainly IJN Shinano the third sister and converted aircraft carrier is clearly smaller which is probably the best comparison so it is a least arguable.

@@johnholt9399 We always see a figure of 65,000 tons for the carriers but is that empty or laden? Laden Yamato was 72,000.
@johnholt9399
@johnholt9399 4 жыл бұрын
Ingur I think Wiki quotes 65,000 as unladen, when you google it there is a letter from MOD refusing to quote a definitive laden weight in reply to an FOI request - might be linked to security - but saying upwards of 70,000. So happy to agree are the largest i.e length, height, beam warships ever built outside USA, but as you say not necessarily the heaviest as the armour on the Yamato’s probably made them heavier. I must confess when I made the statement I checked IJN Shinano as I knew she was the biggest aircraft carrier ever built outside of USA, but didn’t think about the additional weight of the Yamato/Musashi armour so your point is very well made. However with British bias/pride I maintain that if QE were moored next to Yamato she would look larger in all dimensions.

In the 1960's the Royal Navy had 7 carriers; Ark Royal, Eagle, Victorious, Centaur, Hermes, Bulwark and the Albion. The last two were converted into helicopter carriers. I served on the Centaur for over 2 years. Instead of building 2 carriers of about 64,000 tons I think it would make more sense to have built 3 carriers of about 45,000 tons each. This way the navy could rotate the ships in the traditional fashion by having one in refit (major or minor refit) a second in commission and maybe the third in reserve. Rotate all 3 of them every 4-5 years.

@@henryvagincourt Disagree completely. Firstly female personnel on combat ships not in keeping with the traditions of the service- very important. The navy is of course the senior service, traditions are a cornerstone of it and the military overall. Women and children are IMO what men are fighting to keep safe. If numbers are short- bring back a version of national service. Women on these vessels will I suspect be carried along until action- casualties, personnel missing arms and legs, disfigurement. I pray this does not happen but the military by it's nature must be prepared to fight. Fight and win. General statement about service in a country's military- it is not a right, it's a privilege.

@dc-4ever201
@dc-4ever201 4 жыл бұрын
By today's standards they are ancient, they were designed about 5-10 years before construction and their systems will be significantly outdated. Hell they sold off HMS Ocean and she was only commissioned in 1998-99. In 20 years there have been tons of technological advances especially in the use of unmanned vehicles. They badly need to combine the two types of vessel to save money and reduce crew costs, our Navy is much smaller, but hopefully with vessels now slated to last around 40-50 years, they can afford more over time and being out of the EU means they can also pay some of that cash to the forces.

The Royal Navy needs more Type 45s and Type 26s. Too many ships of the existing escort fleet will be needed to escort the carriers. And why can't the RN have some kind of low-end corvettes to patrol the home waters so that more destroyers and frigates could be deployed around the world to maintain peace and security on the worldwide shipping routes.Britannia rules the waves! Best wishes and greetings from Finland.

That's what the type 31e are for
@tommiterava5955
@tommiterava5955 4 жыл бұрын
@Screampunk11 Yeah,.. but correct me if I'm wrong: the RN will get only 8 Type 26s and the rest of the new frigates will be Type 31s which are obviously less capable than the T26s. Therefore the fleet will consist of only ~14 high-end surface combat ships (6x T45 + 8x T26). My "Dream Fleet" would be 4x ICBM subs (Vanguard-class -> Dreadnought-class) 8x Astute-class attack subs 2x QE-class carriers 12x T45 destroyers 12x T26 frigates + a fair amount of River-class patrol ships + enough Tide-class tankers In addition I think that the RN should build a couple of landing helicopter docks, such as the Australian Canberra-class LHDs, to complement the expeditionary/amphibious warfare capabilities. Maybe that "dream fleet" is not realistic but I hope the UK could build even a few more surface combat ships. Europe needs more military power to create some counterweight against Russia.

Where would you get the money from? Cut the social sector more? The fleet we have is about the right size, we just need to even out the proportions; 12 Type 26 and 10 Type 31 frigates would be perfect, and maybe 3 more Astute attack submarines. That might be achievable with some careful management.

Yes the foreign aid budget needs overhaul, but its critical that we support close allies such as India and do what we can to eradicate poverty and disease so countries can develop sustainably and without the enormous population growth that is the root of the problems with all out overseas interests. An example of redistribution would be a shift towards bottom-up local-driven aid cutting out currupt governments, or the continuation of the UKAID ship class to provide direct aid. It's also a pretty critical aspect of soft power and a form of deterrent.

Are you aware of the upcoming Type 26 and Type 31e Frigates? While it still annoys me how we only have 6 Destroyers, due to dreadful defence cuts during the development of the Type 45's, at least we can safely say that the Type 23's will have a powerful successor in the Type 26. I'm still not convinced by the Type 31e, though appreciate that it is meant to represent the ''low'' part of a ''High-Low'' strategy. The Type 31e's are basically going to be more of a general purpose workhorse escort frigate with far more basic systems and equipment etc. A cheaper alternative for more ''mundane'' tasks. While I do get the idea of freeing up the beefier, major surface combatants for carrier strike group duties and other more important work, I personally think they should just stick to either a single class (for various practical reasons e.g. limited scale mass production of one design allowing all maintenance to be standardised across a single class, simplifying the RN's frigate maintenance e.g. in terms of spare parts and familiarity with one design etc)... ...or...it should go for a ''High-Medium'' (rather than ''High-Low'') strategy. In other words, if needing two classes of frigates, to make the less powerful class more of a standard and pretty beefy ship. Not saying the Type 31e Arrowhead is bad; though it is very outclassed by the T26. T26's are elite high-end ASW prioritising big frigates. The T31e's are more of the estate car compared to the supercar that the T26 metaphorically will be. 8 T26's+5 T31e's planned. Not great, I know, but they'll be very impressive when ready. However, I think the UK needs way, way more naval assets. - 18 Destroyers (even 12 seems a bit gaunt let alone the very overworked 6 T45's we have) - 36 Frigates (if following the ''High-Low'' strategy, then 18 of each in 2 classes; preferably I'd just want 1 class to standardise everything) Well, we can dream...alas, the current climate in our society is very confused and too many folk do not even care about our gallant Royal Navy. General ignorance has stifled everything.

It is criminal what both sides of politics have done to the RN. Although a conservative I heavily lay the blame at David Cameron's feet, he did inherit a mess from Brown and Blair but his defence paper has had such a disastrous effect on the RN is it incalculable. 'Buying two giant 60,000 tonne conventional carriers with little effective VLS defensive measures in my view was a waste. Spain, France with CDG which again my view CDG is way more effective than the QU's, she's just come out of a near two year deep refit and is really brand new, even if problems still exist, but a giant conventional carrier for what? If the UK is returning to some role in the south china sea, as it seems she is, not sure how this advances the UK, the bigger problem the RN faces is they do not have CEC. CEC enables, as in Link16 for an analogy, interoperability seamless and instant meshing of the USN's ships and carrier battle groups. Why the UK refuses to buy this is baffling. Trident is a non negotiable, but now you've got that nutjob Nicola whatever threatening closing access in Scotland, a issue for another day. And how the magnificent royal marines were ever even considered as on the table for culling, with their naval assets is just appalling. Under staffed still, beg, borrow and stealing, cannibalising parts, the RN's systemic and endemic probs remain. These carriers have sucked up SO much i terms of the defence budget when Spain and Italy go for carriers at around 35,000 tonnes and still have an air wing. Sure their theatre of operations is different, but they seem to get way more punch for the buck, but no doubt most will disagree with me, whatever, just my opinion. Where the UK 'has' done brilliantly is in winning the Australian Type26/Hunter Class tender. These ships are 8,800 tonnes. They are bigger that the 45's, and they have significant room for growth, the design for the Canadian ship is in my view far inferior to what the RAN is getting, they're getting a schematically designed ship that has I'd argue revolutionised ship building. BAE have a fucking awful history, but on this they've done really solid brilliant work. The RN needs another tanker/refueling/replenishment ship I'd argue, but the RN is simply stretch too thin. Rule Britannia fantasy is gone. The mystery and sense of 'centuries past' drove a lot of the reasoning for the carriers, and one will always need to be in some form of re fit anyway. The STOVL capabilities with a ski jump is another example of one of the single biggest FUBAR own goals I've ever seen, the flat tops and arresting gear enables significantly ore force capability and projection. Many do not realise the loitering time for the STOVL is not that good, you add external with hard point tanks and you lose the stealth aspect. But the calls been made. The RN air arm is back but how effective it'll be is arguable. Again, just my opinion but what a waste, the UK could have gone flat top nuclear and been so much better places. At least the two big positives for me personally is the RM's are now safe, and the UK/RN finally seems to have a rolling/planned/signed contract for a continuous build like Australia, America, and critically China who punch out a frigate a month, their new Type55's are behemoths, a Ticonderoga sized massive ship with 120 VLS. Now if the Defense Sec can just hold the line from the insidious fuckers at the Treasury, and make sure best practice/past disasters are avoided, and leverage as much as possible with the exported Type 26, things will be set up. NZ is also a possible future Type 26 buy, but their hard left WOKE female anti gun PM as with the previous Labour Gov under the slut Helen Clark who in one fell swoop abolished the NZ air force skyhawks, leaving Australia to prop them up, they need to replace their 2 ANZAC class frigates. But they're cheap fuckers, so the UK will REALLY have to do everything and then some to get a hard left anti defence government to buy the Type26 but it is a possibility.

On 12 November 2019, catastrophic fire danger was declared in the Greater Sydney region for the first time since the introduction of this level in 2009. According to Australian fire fighters, they are ill equipped and undermanned, and the Australian Government has called for more civilian volunteers. There are hundreds of miles of coastal areas under threat or are already ablaze so If the UK had offered or even diverted resources to help with evacuations and humanitarian aid post haste assets may have arrived or may be well on the way to aiding in this catastrophe bearing in mind that the fire season is far from over. If you think that any aid that we may have been able to render would have been totally useless then it seems you are in agreement with the government who prefer the navy to be at home enjoying Christmas.
