That explanation for how Anakin couldn't pull off the "high ground jump" is perhaps the best I've ever heard, and yet it's so simple. Obi Wan was able to counter because he knew exactly what Anakin was going to do, I genuinely never thought about it that way. Kudos!

I remember George Lucas in the Episode III Commentary saying that Anakin was more powerful, and Obi Wan more experienced. I think it's moot to think 'If Anakin had waited', 'if the terrain had been equal'. That forgets that Anakin was fully brute-forcing this fight, trying his best to overwhelm Obi Wan with sheer power and fury. He wasn't in a mindset to wait. As for Obi Wan, he knew quite well that Anakin had the stronger attributes, so he fought defensively while taking advantage of any and all things that would help him out. He wasn't going to let the terrain be equal. Now, if Anakin had been his pre-Sith self? He'd have been more aware and less reckless, and would have beaten Obi Wan eventually. But in that sort of blind fury? Obi Wan's the last guy you should take on without a solid plan.

No matter how much you try to explain it the answer still comes down to that the plot demanded it. Both of them were in way worse positions during the duel than the tiny difference in height there was at the end. There is also no reason why even the cockiest version of Anakin would jump over Obi-Wan so closely, without it even being an attack, because while he was overconfident he wasn't a complete and utter moron that did things that would not never work but had no point whatsoever. Unfortunately this great climax was hampered by terrible writing.

Anakin was younger, faster, stronger, a better duelist, and more connected with the Force. But Obi-Wan knew all these things, and he also knew Anakin - instead of going right for Anakin in a direct confrontation slugging match (in which Obi-Wan would have been quickly outmuscled), Obi-Wan stayed on the defensive the entire duration of the fight and patiently waited for the perfect opening to eventually present itself, which it ultimately did. Obi-Wan *THOUGHT* his way out of the duel, and that's what won him the victory.

If you are referring to me, then that's one hell of a coincidence, cause I've never seen an analysis any similar to the one I did just now. About your comment: Soresu is a style based on pure defense, so it gave the impression of Anakin being superior throught out the fight, however, it was not like that at all, since Obi-Wan's defense was considered a brick wall. As many other have stated, Kenobi was just waiting for the right time to strike partially using his knowledge of Ataru. Masters of Soresu are not always able to overcome their enemies, but none of them have ever been defeted in a lightsaber fight.

I think George or the guy who choreographed the fights admitted anakin was more powerful than obi-wan, but he didnt have the same discipline as obi-wan. I mean look at the fight obi-wan is barely able to keep anakin at bay, and he does things that are meant to annoy anakin. Though that is highly possible because the "I have the higher ground" thing does not really makes sense otherwise, it kinda implies that Obi-Wan was baiting Anakin into taking a huge risk... And I prefer to think that he really did not wish for the outcome of the fight. Anakin forced his hand but he was sincere when he said "don't try it" because he was not resolved to kill his padawan and the closest thing he had to a son, and that is also why he could not resolve himself to finish Anakin off.

Obviously the fight choreographer, Nick Gillard, was told what kind of the battle would be, where they would move, and how it would end. This fight was more than anything, a physical manifestation of their conscious beings, so there's no grand outside strategy built into it

Colton Hunt, personally i think Anakin DID held back. Long story of explanation but he never truly 100% went to the dark side, he was torn between fighting his old master and fighting for what he thought was right. BUT Obi wan was indeed smarter than Anakin, and the reason why Anakin lost.

Quentin Diaz I clearly see your logical opinion, I believe Anakin might’ve held back, for brief moments of the fight, but I also think him being conflicted with Order 66, him causing Windu to die, & killing younglings including the fear & hatred he felt after harming Padme. Anakin was so delusional he thought & truly believed Obi-Wan turned her against him. Padme was not dead yet so he had a lot to lose if he lost to Obi. In my conclusion, I believe at that point Anakin was so immersed by the dark side that he really didn’t hold back (besides when ObiWan confronted him at first). He was trying his hardest to show Obi-Wan his new powers & potential.

It's easy to miss just how amazing Obi was in this fight. He directs Anakin's lightsaber deliberately to put the shields down on the structure, then again to open the door so the fight goes outside where there will be a more dynamic environment. He is constantly backing away looking for an advantage. He knew he couldn't beat Anakin in a straight fight so he gambled that if he kept changing things up he would eventually have the 'high ground'-which eventually of course he did 😉

As I was always tought and also have experienced in martial arts: force and speed are useless without the control that permits you precise strikes and minimal moves to deliver maximal impact and dodge or deflect strikes with minimal fatigue. To me, although more powerful than Kenobi, Anakin was no match to him, due to his lack of experience and to his fragilised psychology and also due to his lack of patiens and wisdom. The fact is this: "Yeah, if Obi Wan didn't have the high ground..." is a silly argument to me: Obi Wan didn't HAVE the high ground; he GOT it. Because he was wise and open minded enough at that time to know he wouldn't make it in a head to head combat on those small platforms. He was wise enough to jump for more stable and les dangerous ground. Which Anakin was to blinded by fury and cockiness to admit. In deed: fighting on those small platforms hovering over the lava that was splashing all around was dangerous for either of them. And the smartest one won. That's it.

Anakin's force abilities were far superior to Obi-Wan. He was more powerful with the force, but Obi-Wan won through strategic tactics. George himself said that Obi-Wan wasn't all that powerful. He was just incredibly wise and his view of the force was what made him such a great Jedi.

What? Federer has been an offensive player primarily for years now while Djokovic has always been a defensive player for the most part and especially lately. In tennis the older you get the more offensive oriented you become because you want shorter games. Saying Djokovic has more brute strength makes no sense either as Federer has always had a more powerful serve and forearm than Djokovic. The one flaw in the duel is the force push equaling out, it's no way you can see Obi Wan's performances against Dooku and come to the conclusion that he can equal Anakin in a force push. I agree in the experience, temperament, and fact that he trained him could aid in the lightsaber duel. But no explanation as to why ObiWan should be able to stand up to the power in the force when in the past he was easily outmatched.

You seem to act as if Obi Wan simply got lucky with finding high ground to assume he would have lost otherwise. Obi Wan not only had an advantage regarding control, but also in his intellect. The whole time he controlled the direction of the fight and *led* Anakin to his demise. If the high ground wasn't there, he likely would have figured out another way to bait Anakin in a bad position.

While Anakin may have won in a one on fight in an extremely neutral area like a small arena or somewhere where the terrain didn't matter, that's not really the point. Obi-Wan was smarter he was able to use the external factors to his advantage and really controlled the direction of the fight. That's essentially the point of his lightsaber form - waiting until you can see an opening or a way to kill your opponent. There's also another factor: Obi-Wan's form was about energy efficiency as well so chances are he would have been able to outlast Anakin and tire him out as a master of Soresu should be able to. This is especially true with Anakin's form which relies on powerful strikes which would possibly cost more energy. Therefore, even in a neutral environment, Obi-Wan's defence may win him the fight. However, most fights don't occur in such an environment and so Obi-Wan's cleverness and ability to control and guide the fight as well as being able to use the terrain to his advantage more effectively than Anakin AND Anakin's arrogance would probably result in an Obi-Wan victory 8/9 times out of 10 in my opinion. I am a huge Obi-Wan fan though so I'm probably a bit biased. Anyway, great video!

There's also a point in the duel where Anakin leaps off the little Droid and onto the platform Obi Wan is standing on. When he does this, Obi-Wan swipes at Anakin mid air. Then he turns around to continue the fight. This along with how he won his past duel with Maul accompanied by Anakin's brash attitude and arrogance was what, in my opinion, allowed Obi-Wan to emerge the victor.

The thing that makes people love Obi-Wan, in my point of view, is that he wasn't very gifted in the force, his lightsaber form (fighting style) wasn't the the best or top tier, but he mastered both the use of the force and his fighting style all through hard work, discipline and devotion, he failed at many tests before Qui-Gon Jinn took him as his Padawan, he has been in the verge of turning to the dark side many times but never even considered going to. He became a Jedi Master - and a very powerful one - even sitting on the Jedi Counsel, among the likes of Yoda and Mace Windu, by pure effort, going on suicide missions alone and coming out without as much as a scratch, while everyone around him was considered to be stronger than him, and it never bothered him... His true gift was his efforts, his hard work, his discipline and devotion.

absolutely. just think about it, his fall to the dark side was to save his wife. saving someone is not inherently a bad thing. he felt like he had no other choice, watch the love of his life die, or succumb to palpatine. (and lets not forget palpatine's manipulation of anakin over the years, stroking his ego, planting ideas in his head, the one who probably put those visions of padme dying in anakins head in the first place.) anakin believed he could trust palpatine because of all this manipulation. so it was an easy choice. now, anakin being on his way into turning into darth vader, had to KILL people. his friends, his teachers, all those younglings. how freaking traumatizing that would have been to him. but after all that i would say he was mostly darth vader. a little bit of anakin was still inside of him, all his hurt and confusion showing slightly, along with obi-wan's hurt and confusion as well. i would say neither were battling clear minded, so they would have been on an even level somewhat when battling. neither at the top of their game.

Kenobi. In the book The Revenge of the Sith, Windu told Kenobi he was the master of form Soresu. Soresu is a form of simplicity and is used by beginning Padawans. And you noticed Count Dooku did not allow himself to fight Kenobi long in Revenge of the Sith. Realizing he was the more dangerous of the two. And for Dooku the fighting style Anakin was using should have been more dangerous. And Dooku;s form was geared toward glancing blows and quick strikes. Power was the one type of attack that his form was weakest against. Which is what Anakin was using. The form built upon powerful fast striking blows. Which Soresu (Obi Wan's form) is perfect for.

The Best Answers Not really, as you seen in Episode ll, Dooku destroyed both Anakin and Kenobi easy. Kenobi went down just the same in Episode III but quicker. Anakin grew his power, starting to control it at that time and used it to beat Count. Honestly Count Dooku should've won that battle because he was the better fighter out of them. The only reason why Dooku lost was because 1 He is a villian 2 He underestimated Anakins powers and became cocky like Anakin did with Obi.

No in the books Obi Wan Kenobi is called "The Master" of his form. The forms that Mace Windu and Yoda used were to cover up weaknesses. Kenobi never had a weakness that needed covering up. So he was a purer swordsmen. In Ep. 3 The Count used The Force, in the presence of The Emperor. Who had been hiding his force powers and using them around the Jedi for years. I think the growth of Obi Wan between Ep. II and III are leaps and bounds if you read the books. I think they were equal for the time Anakin was angry which to me seems like that was Anakin's top gear. And if you hear the director George Lucas, he said, "It was like Obi Wan was 9 level Jedi and Anakin was an 8. And the only way Anankin could gain more power to save Padme quickly was to turn to the dark side which made both of them about a 9 at the fight." Because Darth Vader was still rising to his nine status I give the power title to Obi wan.

Anthony Doc ssrry that's wrong. obi wan didn't resolve himself. its not like you can just change oyur mind in a second. he was following yoda's orders but his heart wasn't in it. throughout the fight you see him trying to stop the fight. he even tried to save Anakin at the end. if he was fully into killing him he wouldn't have told him about the high ground. obi wan loves his student too much to kill him. he barely had the resolve to fight. when Anakin was in the lava he didn't even finish him off. he was just done and left. he didn't want him to suffer. Kenobi isn't sadistic, but he couldn't do the deed.

As Greta said, he just literally has less connection. Connection to the force is a physical connection between the body and the force. Therefore, less body means less connection. After their fight he only had about 60-70% of his physical body left, and therefore had reduced his connection to the force by an equal amount. Vader is 30-40% weaker that anakin, or at least has that much less potential.

But what gave him the victory was letting go of the pain that caused. Truly centering himself in the Force and letting its calm clarity guide him. @Jules Juerez no Anakin is as strong as we hype him up to be count Dooku even stated himself in the books that Anakin is physically superior and has very heavy and powerful strikes to where if he didn't brace himself he would be knocked over easily. He was also faster than obi wan because of age as one factor and again Anakin has the athletic ability and the force augmentation to be faster than obi wan who is older and not as attuned to the force as Anakin is naturally. Obi wan is smarter and more experienced due to his age and the fact that he has been in battles with Anakin so he does indeed know him to the point that he can counter Anakin when those chances show up.

@Jules Juerez Obi wan naturally is less attuned to the force which means he had to train almost triple as much time in comparison to the others. During that he had to hone his craft so he was a master of form 3 which one of the reasons he was able to hang in for so long even against Anakin. In the duel against dooku, he was stated to be so precise that it looked like he didn't move his blade to block. That plays a huge factor because it plays into how he fights he isn't going waste all of that much energy to try to end the duel quick but wait until the other slips up so he can end it then like he did. To address the speed you see him on the back foot and having to keep backing up while Anakin keeps moving forward and they are moving really fast to where you see Obi wan looking concerned when he tries to block Anakin's strikes which is another reason why he went into places he could slow Anakin down so then he could counter far better than at the beginning. Note the corridor where Anakin was constantly striking the walls, the catwalk they were having to balance on, the stabilizer that fell although it wasn't planned it did slow Anakin down. Just look at the fight again it is all there. You could even see obi wan timing Anakin's strikes to where his speed works against him. Like it was said before obi wan is more experienced than Anakin is as well as knowing Anakin for years, since his training started, training 3x harder than his peers (obi wan), and in the video it was saying obi wan really focused on his force abilities to where he could channel it to where it can match another if he could do it. If obi wan lacked any one of these things about him he would've lost easily but he didn't lack this stuff so he won.

Obi wan was holding back (or held back by his emotions), he didn't finish the duel until the situation demanded it, that is to say "kill" or be killed and he knew the situation really well because of his duel with Maul... hell, he even warned Anakin and I think he would have let Anakin escape, does that sound like someone whose intent is crystal clear? I don't buy the whole "it was his style" either, Obi wan trained in Ataru for 20 years or so, so he would be perfectly capable of lunching offensive strikes, using Anakin´s momentum or at least something a little more along the lines of "I am gonna kill this fucker". As for Anakin, he was fully versed into the duel and if he was so freaking better than Obi wan the high ground wouldn't have stopped him, if the difference of power is as Anakin´s supporters claim it to be Anakin should have won the duel waaaaay before any tactic advantage presented itself.

i always felt obi wan was bad ass. period. out thinking a physically stronger opponent shows just that. and usually does in these star wars moments. somebody with so much power gets cocky, then gets fubar. we see Kenobi do it multiple times in the prequels. Maul, Grevous, Anakin. all over confident in their strength that they were outsmarted by the better man. i think only yoda rivals kenobi on intuition through the force.
