Excellent, nuanced conversation. No sensationalism. Just like the fight. One thing worth taking into account is that the knockout artist will sometimes face the perception of having been outboxed by virtue of not doing what they always do. This is likely even more true for Beterbiev, having gone the distance for the first time. I gave Beterbiev the nod, but Bivol showed himself as a top-class fighter, and that's the kind of guy who's not simply going to be ragdolled.

I might’ve bent over backwards cause I picked Beterbiev to win…I didn’t wanna be biased towards my pick. Maybe in doing that, I gave Bivol too much credit. Also, with no volume, a lot of Beterbiev’s punches looked like they lacked their usual snap and steam. With audio on my rewatches, I could hear the power still carry. Thanks for watching!

I question how the "high-impact" punches were judged; AI may not yet be taking into account all the variables, especially with partially blocked shots being a factor. For example, the structural rigidity of the hand and forearm when making contact matters a lot WRT transfer of energy from puncher to target; one reason Beterviev is so "heavy handed" and Bivol is not is that Beterviev's hand and wrist/forearm are extremely rigid and solid on impact when his punches are viewed in slow-motion; with Bivol there is much more flexion in the forearm and wrist that robs him of a great deal of power. I doubt this is factored into current AI.

It’s hard to speak negatively on Bivol’s defense after that fight. Lasted 12 with the greatest puncher of this generation and made him miss on over 70% of his punches thrown. They essentially landed the same amount of shots with one person throwing 200+ more punches than the other. Activity won that fight not boxing skills, so was this a win for the sport?

The association of boxing commissions does not want judges scoring even rounds. They also don’t want judges considering ring generalship, effective aggression or defense unless the clean effective punching ends up being even. People talking about everyone having different criteria don’t have their finger on the pulse of boxing. The 3 people sitting closest all saw the same fight and scored it very similarly.

Great insights, Thank you. Just wanted to point out 'Allah chose me' is a term Muslims use all of the time. For example waking up in the morning, is acknowledged by a prayer, 'Allah has chosen me for another day'. Not in those exact words, but It is done through the day for almost everything. Point being its not a factor to consider. Beterbiev saying this after the fight, its unlikely it was meant as 'Thank God I scraped through this and won'. This is BS. The metrics judges look for are as follows: 1) Effective Aggression: Being aggressive gives the impression of dominance, but unless the boxer is landing shots and not constantly getting countered, it isn't really 'effective'. Judges look for effective aggression, where the aggressor consistently lands punches and avoids those from his opponent. 2) Ring Generalship: The fighter who controls the action and enforces their will and style. 3) Defense: How well is a boxer slipping, parrying, and blocking punches? Good defense is important. 4) Hard and Clean Punches: To the untrained eye, it can appear as if a boxer is landing a lot of shots, when, in fact, most are being blocked or aren’t landing flush. A judge needs to look for hard shots that land clean. Saying that “pressure” and “aggression” are two of the primary metrics to judge a round is nonsense because it would obviously favour come-forward pressure fighters. Pressure would fall under ring generalship. And it’s EFFECTIVE aggression not just aggression. You can’t just revise the rules and scoring criteria of boxing because you feel like it, you guys need to look this stuff up instead of just guessing 😂

The aggressor is something that most judges pay attention to. That doesn't mean they don't look at the 4 criteria when judging a fight. They definitely do and that is the main criteria. But if a fighter is inactive, taking long portions of the round off while the other fighter is the aggressor and while he may not be landing, he is the one coming forward. Most judges will score the round for the aggressor regardless on if it was effective or not. That is what people are missing with Bivol's performance. It's not that he didn't have moments of landing the cleaner blows. The issue is it wasn't consistent enough. There were too many rounds where he would be moving and not punching while Beterbiev is the one coming forward and punching. Judges are going to give Beterbiev those rounds.

The problem with boxing scoring, it is very subjective scoring. You can pretty much justify anything. You can call any fight robbery. One could have given canelo against Bivol and justify it. Scores actually were pretty close 113 to 115. Btw I know very little about boxing. I really like bivol and beterbiev. My personal sentiment is should be a draw or bivol decision, again from a guy who knows very little about boxing

Thats what I did. I watched it in 0.25x speed. Beterbiev won the match. Even compubox did not count properly Beterbiev's shots. Also AB blocked so many flashier shots from Bivol cleanly. In the normal speed, it might look like Bivol peppering Beterbiev. In one case, Bivol threw 7 shots, none landed in Beterbiev.

Bivol won anywhere from 5 to 8 rounds. Artur took anywhere from 5 to 7 rounds. Bivol landed the flashier cleaner headshots. Artur was down 2 to 4 coming into the 2nd half. Artur would have needed 5 of the 6 remaining rounds, which he didn’t, to win. I think these are the reasons why this fight that could have gone either way is being mislabeled as a robbery.
