There's a few different types of liars. If my uncle tells you he caught an 10 pound catfish, it was probably only 8 and 1/2 pounder, but there's still a fish fry this weekend. However, if someone tells you they almost caught a 6 ton catfish no pics, they probably don't even own a fishing pole. Ol Brushy was spinning too much yarn. Sure, I rode with Custer, was Billy the Kid, beat Teddy Roosevelt in a race up San Juan Hill, taught Babe Ruth how to hit a baseball and taught Einstein how to do multiplication tables.

If you grew up on the frontera we all know Billy lived a long life. You need to interview the old timers on the Mexico border near fabens and San Elizerio it was common knowledge growing up in the area , Billy was a friend of Mexicans and our casa is your casa. I got good news and bad news--- I told a lady friend of mine that Brushy Bill wasn't Billy the Kid as she believed because she saw Young Guns II a couple decades ago and never thought to question it. As proof I pointed her to this channel, which she is now subbed to and binging old episodes. On one hand you shattered this poor woman's belief in a cool story from the old west. But on the other hand you gained a new subscriber and fan of the channel.

My great-great grandfather was 101 in 1950 and he knew Billy and saw him dead. Heard the shots that killed him. Dug his grave and was a pall bearer. He also had worked for John Tunstall. His name was Vicente Otero. He was interviewed about Brushy and called BS. He also said that Pat shot him in the back. Love you content dude.

I'll send a pic of him. He and a man named Jesus Silva did most of the heavy lifting. Pat was accomanied by two other men that were not aware ofnhis plans. These men are the ones that prompted Billy to entire Pete Maxwell's room and ask his last question. Billy wasn't armed with anything but the knife he was carving beef with. I'll send you the link to his personal account there is an audio file available from the Albuquerque journalist who interviewed him. He was totally blind at 101 but his mind was sharp. He never spoke much english. My mom was about 6 when he passed but he knew all his grandchildren and great grandchildren by voice. He is buried in Los Lunas New Mexico

When was he interviewed about Brushy? If he was that closely connected to Billy, would not he have wanted to further the narrative that Billy was dead so that he’d no longer be hunted? Warrants for his arrest were still being issued two years after the shooting. If he helped dig the grave and was a pall bearer, was he one of the four men later interviewed and asked to identify where Billy’s grave was, yet none of the four could agree on the location? If he claims Billy was shot in the back and his two deputies ushered him into Pete Maxwell’s house, this confirms Garrett and his two deputies all lied about the details of the shooting, and still had different lies of their own?

I’m no doctor or anything but, one simple piece of evidence to me proves that Brushy is NOT Billy the kid. If you look at both of their ears they are completely different. Billy had detached ear lobes and Brushy has attached lobes. The ears could be used as a identifiable fingerprint, plus the ears are cartilage and once formed after birth they don’t change form unless they’re mutilated or something. Brushy’s ear lobes look as if they attach to the jawline and Billy’s doesn’t. That’s just my opinion.

A couple of years ago I found a website which has been created by a guy who is absolutely convinced that Brushy Bill is identical with Billy the Kid - and he is adamant that Brushy Bill's pictures of his younger self totally look like Billy's famous picture 😉 It's stunning how much material this guy and his contributors have unearthed. A lot of this is definitely interesting, and it increases our knowledge of the real Billy's character and also of the historical situation. He managed to convince me that Pat Garrett's version of how he killed Billy, may not be 100 percent true. Garrett tried to come across as brave, but he probably ambushed the Kid - and it's not totally out of the question that he could've made a mistake and killed the wrong man, which would have been a disaster for Pat Garrett. But I can't see how he could have managed to convince everybody who was present in Fort Sumner and who knew Billy very well, to keep quiet. Not everybody who was there that night was Billy's friend. There would have been too many co-conspirators. And Pat Garrett would have been mortally afraid for the rest of his life that the Kid might surface again sooner or later. Some people have speculated that Pat and Billy were in cahoots and that Pat helped Billy to escape and fake his death. Pat Garrett would get fame and reward while Billy could make a fresh start far away from his old hunting grounds. But that doesn't solve the problems with the identification of the body - and Billy and Pat would be cold blooded murderers who conspired to slaughter an innocent man who just by chance looked a bit like Billy! To be fair, Brushy Bill supporters acknowledge that their guy told a lot of lies, and that he shamelessly embellished his biography by inserting himself into many well known historical events. But they fail to see that all these tall tales and outrageous lies are huge red flags which seriously damage Brushy Bill's overall credibiliy. They argue that the lies don't matter because of Brushy's alleged striking similarity with the Kid, his alleged insider's knowledge and the affidavits of a few people who allegedly knew Billy the Kid.

A few years ago I watched a documentary claiming Billy fathered a son with Paulina Maxwell. The child was born after Billy died. The picture of the alleged son was a dead ringer for the photograph of Billy with his guns. The makers of the documentary took a DNA sample from one of the son's descendants. They tested against either Brushy's DNA or someone from his family. Spoiler Alert: it was not a match.

We do not need Young Guns III. I was a young Sailor, just out of boot camp. I was at my school command, learning what was to be my job in the fleet. The base had a movie theater, so one of my buddies and I went to it. That was when I saw the original Young Guns. My point? That was 1988. Young Guns II a few years later, cool. That was the rare sequel that was as good as the original. But friends, I am now a 53 year old man. Emelio, Kiefer, Lou and even Christian...those guns are no longer young. We do not need a geriatric version of "Young Guns." And the alternative is even worse...using new actors who will absolutely die by comparison. Does no one my age remember what they did to "Red Dawn?" Some things just need to be left alone. I mean, yeah...we all suspended disbelief enough to accept a story where the Navy let Maverick stick around for over 30 years without making Admiral. But admit it, even THAT was tough. Some things just need to be left where they are.

cmv, I also drank the Kool-Aid for a while and gravitated towards the "Brushy the Kid" myth because it was fascinating. It was nice to believe that Billy The Kid had somehow and against all odds managed to live a long and adventurous life! And the Brushy The Kid supporters manage to spin tall tales 😉 However, Brushy's stories have more holes than a Swiss cheese, and his own relatives have debunked his claims. The two guys don't even look like each other at all! Yes, they both have "Dumbo" ears and a slightly similar jaw line. But the shape of the eyes and brows is quite different, and the hair structure and colour is different, too! According to people who knew him the Kid had dark blond and slightly curly hair, while Brushy's hair was much darker and completely straight. Brushy's skin is darker, too. He might have a few hispanic genes. A couple of years ago another picture of the Kid has turned up which shows him with a bunch of guys in front of a house where they had gathered in order to play crocket. It's a fascinating picture, and it's obvious that Brushy Bill and Billy the Kid are two different guys. I have a hard time to believe that experts who have compared the pictures of both guys, came to the conclusion that the pictures might show the same person! But even if the bone structures are somewhat similar, there is still the hair and skin colour which is very different. And in 1950 Brushy doesn't look at all like someone in his 90s. Like many other legends the Brushy The Kid story has developed into a myth and the media play along because the truth is less interesting.

The alleged location is wrong - the building on the site wasn't built until 50 years after the photo was allegedly taken; the leafless trees show time of year is incorrect, even the supposed facial recognition match wouldn't hold up in a court of law. There is no provenance on this photo and other recent photo discoveries. They spring up out of nowhere and some expert or other declares them to be authentic photos of Billy the Kid, based on little more than 'he looks like him' or that someone else in the photo looks like someone who knew him so therefore it must be him. There is only one 'authenticated' image of Billy the Kid.

There is no evidence of the wounds...that's a common misconception. It's written in the book Alias Billy the Kid but William V. Morrison never provided any proof of these numerous scars. Also, Billy was only shot once (before being killed) so the only scar that would matter would be if Brushy had one on his thigh. Alas, no evidence though. As far as Brushy having inside knowledge, that too is false. Everything he knew he got from books.

@@ccrider3435 I have serious questions about Garrett's account and think there are many questions left unanswered. Was Billy really armed with a knife and pistol? Did he really say quien es? Did Pat shoot him as being raised his revolver or was it done from ambush? When was Billy's body removed from Maxwell's room? I'm not sure what you mean by me "toeing the line for demonstrably untrue accounts of history" when literally every historian agrees that Garrett killed Billy. Thankfully we don't have to go by Pat's account alone. Dozens of people - identified by historians by name - who knew Billy saw his body before it was buried. Many of these people were interviewed by historians and reporters, and some of them left their own written accounts. Much like with Pat's version, these other eyewitness stories have issues. The one thing that everyone agrees with (everyone who was at Fort Sumner) is that Billy was killed at Garrett's hand. Nobody who was at Fort Sumner (population of around 200 in 1881) ever came forward claiming it was a hoax or denying that Pat killed the Kid. I don't think many folks really believed in Brushy. I remember hearing the story on Unsolved Mysteries and I knew he was just a pretender. Young Guns really helped Brushy's story to gain a foothold, but it was just a story. Brushy Bill is a figure that should be pitied because his actual life obviously didn't match up to Billy's.

I’ve always loved the story. Admittedly being born in the early 80’s while I was a young boy like you I was a big fan of Young Guns. Was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I as a kid thought the story was true but as an adult I started to look into it more I don’t think he’s The Kid. Just my personal opinion. As far as getting shot in the face that heals and doesn’t always leave one disfigured and plus decades later scars fade and wrinkles cover. Hell 50 Cent got shot with a 9mm in the face and barely had a scar. Granted it’s not a 45lc or whatever caliber was used. Again it’s a cool story and if people want to believe it that’s cool. I just don’t think he’s The Kid.

I live over here by Lincoln County New Mexico and have been interested in the Kids story since i myself was a kid! I’m a diehard fan of Billy and the Regulators! I won a radio contest a few years ago by answering a whole bunch of questions about the Lincoln County war and got my whole game room decked out with Billy the Kid wanted posters, mugs, books etc…One thing I never understood about the whole story was how they never took a picture of the most famous outlaw in New Mexico after Pat Garret supposedly shot him down that night. I figure they would be able to prove the Kid was indeed dead but there was never any proof. Every part of me wants to believe Billy and Pat came up with some kind of grand plan to make it seem like he actually was dead so he could just leave New Mexico and live his life, but I really don’t believe Brushy Bill was the Kid, so it will just always be a mystery, never to be solved! Back in the 70's I worked with a mexican carpenter whose last name was Villegas ( I wont give his first name) . I worked side by side with him for a pretty good while. Once he knew me fairly well he related that his grandfather was friends with the historical Billy in either Fort Sumner or Santa Rosa I really cant remember for sure. I used to drink with the other Latino workers after work and on weekends and a few of them assured me that D---- Villegas was telling the truth. I have no idea about how Brushy may or may not be involved but for One I believe D----.

Not just that, they took no picture of the corpse at all. Lawmen taking pictures of the bodies of dead outlaws to prove they killed them was widely practiced back then. Refrigeration was unavailable then, so transporting bodies long distances for identification was not possible. They often posed with the bodies. Pat did not document the body with a photograph which is odd, because he had a writer along to document the details of the hunt for Billy! Plus, he did not present any of Billys belongings as proof he had killed him. This was standard practice back then as well. Items known to have belonged to the dead man would be presented to the authorities as proof of the killing. Pat said that Billys guns and personal effects were stolen the night before the burial. Also, someone stole Pats horse during the burial. So, no display of the body, no picture of the body, and all of Billys possessions AND Pats horse get stolen?

Personally I think Brushy Bill was full of manure. Simply based on Billy the Kid being aware of his fame at such a young age. It is against human nature for anyone to live quietly after gaining such fame, particularly for someone so young. There just is no way Billy the Kid would not have continued in the limelight so to speak, when everyone assumed him dead. Within a year the Kid would have made himself known to be alive and kicking. Staying incognito for the rest of his life when so young and self-assured and to believe he could have stayed hidden for 50 years is ludicrous.

Brushy was never the kid. He wanted attention when he was much older and told his fantastical stories, as his life was winding down. He must have realized things were nearing the end. The kid was an outlaw, but the dead should be left alone. Brushy knew damn well. Telling lies like he did was that of a con artist . Truth is, he was just a man, very flawed like many are, and he wanted badly 2 be relevant. I am sure he did a few things but he greatly exaggerated them. Sad.

Inf act, one of the big arguments detractors use for why Brushy wasn't The Kid is the fact that the infamous "rifle photo" doesn't math Brushy's physical features. The "rifle" photo is heavily distorted and damaged due to age. The use of a reflective panel on his right side (the photo was taken outdoors and the panel had to be used in order to compensate for the sunlight hitting one side much more than the other) basically eliminated his shadowed jawline on the right side of this face, making him look disfigured. There are multiple other photos supposedly taken of The Kid, the most detailed of which has Jesse Evans in it. He used to ride with The Kid before the Lincoln County War. People who knew The Kid have corroborated that the "rifle photo" doesn't actually portray his real appearance, which explains why the physical features in the photo, at face value, don't match Brushy's. However, when you forensically account for the damage and digitally restore his proper jawline in the "rifle photo", his physical features match the appearance of not only The Kid in other claimed photos (such as the "Jesse Evans" photo) but also Brushy Bill's appearance. Brushy had the same protruding left ear, the same jawline, the same teeth and his facial measurements were the same. The Kid was also famous for having buck teeth and exaggerated K9s which Brushy had removed because of dental issues in 1931. This could've been seen as suspicious if it weren't for the fact that he kept his teeth as a memento. Brushy was also examined by a doctor for his taped interview. He had 26 scars on his body from bullet and knife wounds. The doctor found scars in from bullet wounds in all the right places where The Kid had been reportedly shot (including getting shot in the hip during the infamous shootout in Lincoln). Brushy even had a bullet still lodged in his calf muscle from when someone had shot The Kid in the leg. Detractors usually just disregard the medical opinion of these wounds and baselessly claim that Brushy was a clumsy farmer. I'm not saying that Brushy was The Kid. What I am saying, however, is that people who claim that Brushy wasn't The Kid aren't interested in truly finding out. Preserving the status quo is more important to them. They've made up their minds on this issue and they make the evidence fit their opinion. They make simple and easy excuses just to keep their opinion on the subject intact.

I was an ambulance driver and I seen many gunshot wounded patient’s and Billy kid said he was shot in the jaw and it knocked out a tooth , then he must’ve been hit by a ricochet shot and most likely didn’t penetrate the skin. Because if he was shot directly with a 44 It would’ve taken out more than just a tooth , and would’ve tore out most of his cheek on the on the way out. My family had direct connections to Billy and many other Regulators as well as John and Sally Chisum, which is documented in the book "My Girlhood Among Outlaws" by Lily Casey Klasner (my great great aunt). Billy was employed by my 3rd great grandmother Ellen Evaline Shellenbarger-Casey who had a warrant for her arrest in 1881 (by Pat Garrett), the same time Pat supposedly killed Billy. In 1984 I visited my great grandma Cora Moore (Ellen Casey-Moore's daughter in law) who was in a nursing home, and in conversation, she told me that Garrett did not kill Billy, because Billy had come from Lincoln, NM to Toyah, TX with The Casey's in 1882. He offered them protection from indians and bandits because Ellen was a widow, her husband Robert Casey had been gunned down in Lincoln in 1875. Billy stayed with them a short time and left for Mexico. I didn't really believe my great grandma at the time, but she apparently knew exactly what she was talking about. She had no reason to lie about it. I questioned my grandpa Harvey (her son) about it and he nodded and said it was true, but that "we don't talk about it". I believe William Henry Roberts was the real deal. He was Billy the Kid.

Back in 1977 while visiting my grandmother in Friendswood Texas, I went out front of her house and saw a young African Lion cub wandering the neighborhood! You can't say it's impossible for any animal to be seen anywhere anymore!!!

I saw a mountain lion that was dark brown like no animal I've ever seen like a redish brown saw it hopping a Bob wire fence while i was coming down a road early in the morning around hico tx the place bushy bill lived when trying to figure out what I just saw found a photo on google saying they where most likely extinct for at least 100 years but used to roam Texas and mexico. Well they are still around or at least one was.

I don't believe Garrett killed Billy. However, I'm not convinced that Brushy Bill was Billy. It's possible though. 2 things can be true.
