Ben has, hands down, the best watch channel, however is missing the mark on Citizen. Like a lot of other Japanese brands, Citizen keeps the good stuff for their domestic market. They also focus more on the higher end and even has GS competitor called Campanola . Citizen is also one of the few watch companies that maintains control over their entire production process and develops their own movements. Even third party sales of Miyotas are not particularly cheap. Citizen is a dyed in the wool watch company and always has been. Sorry--watchmaker here (amtuer) and my whole world and life is all about the watch. Watches. Clocks..all time pieces. In my opinion, Citizen are fantastic for the money. Im mostly liking Citizen for ladies' watches. In particularly, The Ecco-Drive. In that arena..they cant be beat, as their genuine diamond(s) models are gorgeous, high quality, and run about 400 bucks. A genuine diamond/ sapphire crystal watch that wont nee a battery for, more than likely, 20 plus years (I have 2 citizen ecco-drives over 24 years old and still run, with their original battery and capacitor, still. WHO sells a watch like that for 400 bucks?? NO ONE. Just for a reminder....the first and only watch I ever had just fall apart on me (like the rotor) was a Seiko 5 from about 5 years ago. That watch lasted a year or 2! Citizen is a great blend of quartz reliability coupled with the quality and look sof a real watch..I mean, a mechanical watch. The technology Citizen patented for a solar watch should tell you all you need to know about the company and quality being important to them. I love the knowledge that the dials are translucent and the solar cells are on the other side of the dial. Opening a whole new world (looks) for a solar watch. And due to this design feature..the solar "panels" last and last..and last..and last. DO you know that over 80% of watches are abandoned simply due to the fact they need a new battery and we just never get around to getting another put in. Thank Goodness for this as then I come along and buy a bag O watches from goodwill for 10 bucks and put new batteries in them and re-sell them an I make good profits from that. Recently, there was a perfect little Tiffany's ladies watch that retailed for 1,000 bucks. I sold it for 60, lol. (It wasn't a real watch. )WHoever would pay 1k for a fashion watch is...well) My hope and dream is the lady who goes through the donated watches for the GOOD ONES (which are NEVER sold in their stores. Theyre auctioned on line. ALL items in Goodwills are items they would have THROWN AWAY. Anything of value never makes it out to the floors much anymore. In November 2022 I purchased my first Citizen watch, the Citizen Promaster Land Titanium. It is a JDM watch so I hard to import into the US, but it was worth it. Case diameter 39mm, sapphire crystal, blue dial, titanium bracelet, Eco Drive (I prefer automatic watches but decided to give it a try). The hands alligns nicely with the Arabic numerals and indices. This happened to be a model that has the radio controlled settings that only properly work in Japan, but there are a couple of work-arounds to use it in the US, and you can still set it manually which I orefer using. So far the accuracy is superb, and I'm very happy with the overall design. My only disappointment was that the week after ordering the watch in blue, I found the model with a green dial that I would have much preferred. I've considered selling the blue and using the proceeds to order the green, but I admit I do like the blue. Probably my biggest complaint about Citizen is that many of their watches have case diameters well over 40mm, which is too large for my small wrist. My other gripe is that too many of the dials are really busy with all the displays the have. I prefer a dial that's simple. The Promaster Land fit the bill. Ordering and having it shipped (I found this one at a shop in Spain) to the US ran $425 USD, which I found very competitive for what you get with this watch.

It’s just that all these reviewers with their Rolex and Tudor fetishes always focus on the same old boring types of watches: Divers, Small Case Automatics with no numbers on the Dial, the Formal “Grandpa” watches with Black leather, etc… Citizen has so many cool features on so many of their watches, it just makes the brand more interesting to me.

citizen watches are fantastic. I own/ have owned may Citizens. Great QC, excellent time keeping, never needs a battery. Their chronos and divers are especially good. Just try to find ones with sapphire crystal when possible. The Chandler and Attesa series are personal favorites. If you prefer smaller watches, the chandler AT0200-05E is 39mm. I've owned it for years and can say it's a great piece, even with the mineral crystal.

Ben - take a look at the Citizen Collection NB1050-59A. Sakura watches has it listed for $408 USD - so this falls nicely in the 'mid-range' Citizen tier. It is simple, elegant, and serves as one of my dailies. It houses a 9000-series Miyota, so at that price point, it is well worth it - and not to mention 38mm, sapphire crystal, and 10 bar WR.

Citizen Eco-Drive watches are among the best value watches available, you just have to wait and buy them when they are on discount. The quality is really excellent and you don't have to bother with changing batteries, ever. So I would say for quartz watches, Citizen ranks in the S tier. Full disclosure: my two daily drivers are both Citizen Eco-Drive titanium and sapphire watches. And I love them.

Big fan of the channel, Ben! Usually agree with your videos, but have to disagree with this one. The build quality, engineering and selection of Citizen watches is pretty much unmatched by any of its competitors on the affordable end of the market. In particular, their affordable dive watch range is excellent - 200m divers, both eco drive and autos for under 200 quid. The NY00 selection look good on small wrists (like mine) and were even used by the Italian Navy for 10 years. Quality watches!

Watch snobs may not like them but watch snobs aren't true watch enthusiasts, they're just smug, narcissists who use items to try and impress people. They are just interested in their egos. My advice to anyone buying a watch is buy what you like, not what other people say you should like. Having said that, do your homework and don't get ripped off with tat. In my experience Citizens are good solid watches.

Citizen's mechanical watches are pretty decent. They even launched a 38mm SARB counterpart in their lineup recently that looks pretty great. The other leg up Citizen has over other brands in my opinion is their Eco-Drive GMTs. The only Citizen I have in my collection is the BJ7100-82E Promaster GMT with a world timer bezel and a traveling GMT (or "true GMT" as some would call it). It looks great IMO and packs a lot of value.

I've got a Promaster Tough super titanium (BN0118-12L) as my daily beater, simple clear uncluttered dial, monocoque case and Kevlar strap, nigh on indestructible. I've got G shocks too but they are just so thick and uncomfortable when worn under cuffs such as motorbike jacket and gloves. I'm also not a fan of Casio analogues (or mostly analogues) as per the vid. Personal taste plays a big part be it a conscious or unconscious decision. I guess having teeny little wrists is a consideration too ;)

I've recently got an NY-0040 and must say it's placed me firmly in the Citizen fanboy camp whilst completely agreeing with your criticisms regarding their range. Most of their watches are indeed too large and their designs are indeed a little bland when viewed as a whole. I do however strongly urge you to get your hands on a black dial NY-0040, it's possibly the best automatic diver you can get in the sub £200 price point. It's ISO rated to 20atm with genuine Special Forces heritage with the Marina Militare (who internally tested the watch successfully to 500m) and looks so good in the flesh with that inky dial.

I have been very happy with the automatic Citizen C7 re-issue I bought (NH8390-20L). It's pretty much the perfect watch for me. The shiny dark blue dial (comes in some other colors as well) is absolutely gorgeous, it tells the time, day and date, and it works both in casual and formal occasions. It was my first automatic, so I was a bit afraid it would not keep the time very well, but so far it has been very accurate. The normal price for it in my country is 279€, which is not bad at all, but I got it for 199€, which is an absolute steal for such a good watch. It looks more expensive than it is, and the one in white and gold and a brown strap also looks very fancy, if that's more your style. The downsides would be no sapphire glass and only 5 ATM, but I'll probably just get some Casio for all my sports and outdoors needs.
@harrkev3 жыл бұрын
You are right about the size. I have this exact same watch (got it in Gloucester when I was over there). I love it, and it is one of my two daily drivers (solar G-shock being the other one). It looks dressy enough for a suit, and tough enough for every day. The only wear is some scratches on the clasp. You are mostly right. I wish that it were 2mm smaller, and with a 20mm lugs. I tried mine with a 22mm NATO, but it just didn't look right, probably due to the size. The lume is great, but it needs a bit more, and the 12:00 marker should be bigger. I also wish the date window was beveled. The face is thick due to the need for a solar panel, and the date can get lost in the shadows. Otherwise, I think this is practically perfect. As to the Casio.... Nope. There is something classy about a three-hand analog watch. The digital window on the Casio ruins the dressy appearance. You might as well go for a G-Shock.

Your rather subjective "I don't like it if it doesn't fit my wrist" is a bit annoying, not all of us have girlie wrists. I own a number of solar watches (Seiko, Pulsar/Seiko, Casio and of course Citizen), and that includes the following Citizens: Excalibur Pro Diver, extra thin Stilleto tank, Titanium you reviewed, gold plated dress (with a nice butterfly clasp) and a black "field" B&R lookalike. All bought for £120 or less NEW - hardly expensive for what they are. My wife has no less than 6 EcoDrives, with the cute Riva being her favourite - and most of these were bought used from ebay at silly prices. Overall I rate Citizen certainly on par with Seiko (of which I also have a few examples) and think EcoDrives offer unbeatable VFM - and "always ready to wear" convenience. Casio, despite having some excellent models, is considered by most (me included) as a budget brand, and I tend to only buy their resin models, admittedly versatile and (mostly) inexpensive. Learn to appreciate Citizen, you will not regret it.

My late father's Eco-Drive (Calibre 8700) has been going for over 15 years non-stop. Whilst some Citizens do have failures in their recharging over time, that one has been solid as has most of mine. Definitely more reliable than my Tough Solar Casios. VFM I would say Citizen is excellent. During the time Eco-Drive dropped, we used to get many Seikos in for replacement "capacitors" as the Kinetic models would fail to hold charge after only a couple of years. I believe things have improved since then, but with the massive Citizen range, reasonable materials for the price and interesting movements (1000th of a second stopwatches way cheaper than a Tag!), I still rate them well. Their titanium models in particular are pretty hardy. I also have the BN0110-06E Super Titanium with thickened sapphire glass Royal Marines Commando one with a Kevlar band. Still going strong. 300M WR, 5 year warranty, good lume and shock resistance. I am no longer in the watch game but would recommend Citizen - as long as you are comfortable with mass produced watches having potential QC issues as you have seen. Just return it until you are happy.

Citizens are amazing even in the luxury class (such as the Chronomaster), comparing detail wise to a Grand Seiko, but unfortunately you have to import those from Japan. Good video, Ben. I have owned quit a few Citizen eco-drive watches, and they have all been solid performers. I currently have one in my collection that I've owned for 11 years, with no issues except minor scratches and an a mineral crystal gouge. But the watch has always run fine and keep good time. I have another, the Calabria, perpetual time in gold and stainless, with a black dial and gold indices (that's one you should check out; 40mm with a short lug to lug-wears beautiful on my 6.25 inch wrist). I've owned that one for 7 years, and it still runs great. I just picked up a World-timer, GMT echo-drive, which is more of a tool watch, also very sweet. I think that there is room for improvement. I would like to see them start using more sapphire crystal placement on there models over $150.00 USD. If companies like San Martin can do it so can Citizen, Casio and Seiko. Which is another point. In all reality, I don't see a vast difference in the quality of a Citizen over a Seiko, or a Casio for that matter. I think it depends on the particular model of the brand your looking at, as with all things. Some will appeal to you and some will not. But overall, I think the big 3 Japanese watch companies are all pretty comparable, depending on the models your comparing. Some are great, and some suck. I feel the same about most Swiss and Chinese brands as well. Best regards, Mike
