Was it a good idea to weave with wool AND silk? - Daily Vlog - Episode 60

Hey everyone! In this video, I talk about my recent weaving project that used my Tour de Fleece 2022 handspun yarns. I made a mulberry silk yarn spun over the fold and though I only had about 124 yards, I wanted to weave with it and use stash yarns to make a fuller project. I have heavy weight scarves, so the project I show in this video is a lighter, gauzy scarf. I used silk, merino wool, and alpaca in the warp and weft...and it was very tricky!
I mention tensile strength a lot in this video, but sometimes I also mean 'elasticity'. Apologies in advance for any confusion (I must have been tired when I filmed this). Silk is very inelastic but wool is very elastic, and that elasticity made this weave a true challenge!

The loose weave shows off the characteristics of each fibre beautifully. Very pretty fabric produced

Gorgeous! I'm still a newbie weaver as well. I've done less than a dozen on my RHL, and I prefer weaving with super fine yarns. My first real project was with my own handspun. I used 70/30 grey merino/silk blend spun at 32wpi for my warp and my weft was a Tussah silk handspun singles that was like sewing thread thickness. That's when I fell in love with weaving! Curly and Yarny has a great video on KZbin about how she handles them for weft color changes. (Or any loose weft end really) I started using her method and so far it's worked out great! Can't wait to see what you weave in the future!😁😁😁👍👍👍

Ah, I wish I read this before finishing my giant blanket project! I had so many color changes and ends to weave in... 😩 But it's done now and I'll be editing that video soon. It's a combo handdyed/handspun project.

I wonder if steam would relax the alpaca.

Such a delicate ethereal weave…. Beautiful colorwork I may have missed the mention… are you using a rigid heddle loom? Nevermind.. I see it at the end of the video….

Thanks Chris. Lol, it's my kromski harp loom. One day I may get a floor loom as the small ones don't take up a ton of space. I wonder how it would look at a heavier gauge? 🤔 Always experiment with your ideas!!

@@ExpertlyDyed was the fiber dyed before or after the spins?

@Chris T Everything was dyed before the spins, but I carded the wool after dyeing. The alpaca was commercially spun.
