Of all the depictions of Caesar's death, the best in my opinion is the one featured in the episode "Caesar", of the docudrama series "Ancient Rome: The Rise and Fall of an Empire." In this version, Caesar (brilliantly played here by Sean Pertwee) notices the Senators drawing knives as they surround him, but, instead of panicking or fighting back, he just stands still and holds out his arms, ready to become a God. The scene then fades to black and the episode ends

Then he shouldn't have walked around in his purple toga and ask for a special chair ( throne ) in the senate. The conspirators were afraid that Caesar would become untouchable after Parthia , a rumour was going around that only a King can defeat the Partians. Marc Antony had also publicly presented Caesar with a crown ( which he refused after the crowd got upset). Ceasar had been gaining more and more power with little signs he would stop. He abused power as Consul, he abused power as a governor, he then marched on Rome and replaces the senate with yes m'en who gave him more and more lidicrous power. Yes the senate needed reform but not its utter destruction.. Just because Cato and Pompey are trash doesn't make the whole system trash

Everyone wanted power only caesar knew what to do with it once he got onto it and what rome needed. No one at the time inspired such love and loyalty amongst the common folk the way caesar did. Cato and his cronies were a bunch of corrupt aristocrats who did absolutely nothing but oppress the people of rome and the only thing they cared was their own power. The emperor is dead long live the emperor

I mean....there would have been no way for the Senate to know that republic would collapse on it's own. We say it was such because we know what happened after it. Hindsight or whatever. They just killed and died for what they wanted to preserve... the republic and therefore they thought of Ceaser as the destroyer of republic and knew it was necessary to destroy him, you might not agree with them, but we most certainly can understand their reason. It's weird that someone claims it was "unnecessary" because we obviously speak with hindsight.

This. It is always a little unfair to say things about the past when we have hindsight and sometimes even more knowledge from that period than the people living there themselves.

They didn't really want the republic to survive, they wanted to keep their power and influence, in the republic they know how to and still had a powerbase but whatever ceasar had planned for the future? No guarantees there except that being his enemy would be bad business. Better to take him out before then

Cicero, who was an enemy of Ceaser and the single greatest defender of the republic was not let in on the plot as he would have never supported it. The entire Cesarian era of Roman politics is an incredible tragedy of the fall of a nation from corruption into despotism.

There is that theory that Ceasar was suffering from some degenerative condition that brought him "insanity strokes". So, because he wanted people to remember him as a powerful leader, not as some decrepit insane old man, he secretly organised his own assassination. He still didn't expect the Brutus thing though.

A lot of people don't know that Rome had had a few dictators before Caesar; their republic had a built in mechanism where they would elect a dictator during times of great stress and he'd guide the country through the turmoil and thdn hand power back to the Senate. Or that Caesar was attempting to surpass his hero, Marius, as the greatest Roman ever. Romans during the Republican Era would compete to see who could do the most for the nation out of a sense of domis ...and Caesar had to go as big as he did because Marius set the bar ridiculously high. Octavian was the one who created the empire, and Caesar's assassination gave him his means to do so.
