True. Whitebeard might have still been strongest when he died. Oda made it clear he was killed by a TON of different attacks from different people. Kaido was always stated that he was "considered" and "believed" by the one piece people to be strongest, whereas Mihawk's title never had that uncertainty. The way Oda introduced Kaido was always, in a way, set up to disprove the title. On the other hand, Oda went out of his was with Whitebeard's death to REINFORCE the title, basically telling us "hey it wasn't just Akainu and Blackbeard, Whitebeard died to a small militia of the top fighters in the world"

Mihawk was already the worst writing choice though. Came in with a feat that looks small by halfway through pre ts and just plain silly post ts while we're told he's the strongest swordsman. Don Krieg somehow escaped him on a messed up chimera boat he glued together and sailed to baratie. Because why? Reveals a black blade story line that gets thrown away for over a decade after oda makes haki Shows up at marineford and does nothing, goes through the entire thing unable to beat anyone stronger than daz bones who got beaten by arabasta zoro. Gets matched up to vista who does nothing ever again while we're told he rivals mihawk. These 2 strongest fighters clink swords while the big boys crush half of marineford. Teaches zoro but fails to teach him what conqueror's haki is despite knowing that he's gonna come up against it Goes from the strongest swordsman in the world to keeping safe with one of the first guys to get smacked in the grand line by pre gear luffy and one of the first guys luffy smacks before the grand line. And so on.

Kaido basically went 1 v 100 for most of the raid. No one could be him one on one. Dude was carrying the WHOLE frickin island while fighting fighting all of them. It's like that line... "if a 1000 band together to take out the master, they don't all become masters.". Far from it In fact it makes them WEAKER than the sum of their parts. In terms of acclaim and ability, ganking one enemy doesn't diminish that enemy... it diminishes each of the gankers. Kaido, as of ch 1086.... is still the World's Strongest Creature. Just because he lost at a mega massive handicap, does NOT diminish him. In fact, with the ungodly amount of effort (# of ppl) and luck that it took, it actually cements his title.

Mihawk was stated to be the strongest swordsmen in name and ACTUALITY. The other titles don’t have this. Shanks has used a sword every time he gets into a serious fight. Oda said shanks is a swordsmen. It’s really not that complicated. Zoro becomes the WSS after beating Mihawk not shanks. Anyone other than Mihawk being Zoro’s final opponent is a let down. Not really. As much as mihawk is called "featless" by his fans he's fought a LOT of people and their issue is that his feats weren't that impressive. Meanwhile the kind of guys that are being revealed now fought at god valley with Roger, garp etc at their peak and live on a rock a quarter of the world away from navy hq but the revolutionary army still won't come and attack them. For a reason. That's not recency bias. That's just seeing the story as it's written and knowing that people who fought at god valley were very strong and that people don't really know who they are to compare mihawk's swordsmanship with them. But we do to an extent. At least one is a veteran of the biggest fight in the last 60 years between the strongest people on the planet.

I think Mihawk is always and will be the final opponent of zoro no questions asked, it's just the most anime way of doing it. there will be dreams that ain't gonna be settled in the main screen of the manga, like Nami's dream of writing the worlds map since we know the straw hats only traveled in one of the many paths that's in the grand line. Zoro and Mihawk feels similar to Luffy and Shanks in a way. They both want to surpass the person they look up to from the previous generation, but the relationship really isn't antagonistic. That is, Mihawk isn't going to be joining Blackbeard or WG and threatening to destroy the world or the Straw Hats unless Zoro can defeat him. Given this, could it be possible that we get a post-WG showdown between Zoro and Mihawk for the title? I guess I'm thinking something similar to Naruto when I say this, where they "team up" (or are at least on the same side) against the WG, then have their epic battle after the big bad has been defeated to settle things.

There's a lot of reasons to speculate this eg his eyes but a lot of stretches that could suggest it right down to imu being from the family NEROna and his sword being a very regal black blade named yoru with similar designs to the throne imu sits on right down to the cross with circles we now think of as the marines symbol.. Family means black, blade name means night. That being said maybe lots of people had eyes like that in the past, and maybe d stands for dracule or dracule was chosen to represent d, and maybe yoru is the 20th sword and maybe the tie is that he's actually the closest blood relative to lili. It's all speculation and it could all mean anything. But either doesn't mean he's actually the strongest swordsman alive.

Lili, however, we don't know. Just disappeared and left the will of D behind. Again, all speculation and it could be the opposite of the truth, but there's a possibility and it's just one of many that would tie mihawk to the original twenty. I'm not saying he is, or is likely to be, lili's descendant, just that with what we know there's as much evidence of him being lili's relative as there is imu's. I think most people expect he'll be tied to the first twenty but there's just a lot of open ends that he could be the knot to tie.

I don't think the "title's aren't accurate" argument works. Whitebeard's title was granted after Roger's death, and at the time, it actually was accurate. It only became inaccurate after he became old and sick. This does not apply to Mihawk. Kaido's title is only really arguably debunked by Luffy, but again, that title was granted BEFORE Luffy beat Kaido, so that argument doesn't work. Before Luffy unlocked G5, as far as we know, Kaido WAS the world's strongest creature. Mihawk is in his prime years, has not been beaten by anyone, and is not old and sick.

I doubt Mihawk is fraudulent in any aspect of his being. He most surely is the pinnacle of a swordsman. His whole life he was only in search of growing stronger in terms of swordsmanship and was said to challenge everyone until there was no one left. Even with Shanks I’m thinking he has the moniker of “observation killer” and it’s been said haki only grows in fierce battles. I’m sure he got that from his rivalry with Mihawk to close the gap and he seems, at least in the past the only one to compete with him. But then you have to think THIS MAN HAS NO SCARS! Think about it like this, If Garling was in fact comparable to WB back in the day, then he should be relative to Garp now, who is around admiral level. So, many of us have Mihawk over the admirals, which makes Garling being one of Zoro's final fights after Mihawk questionable. And with the Gandhi Gorosei, at best you could scale him to admiral level as well, since it's very unlikely that the 5 elders are all Yonkou level fighters as the man power needed to overthrow them, just wouldn't be there if that was the case.

Mihawk don't have any notable feats to be above the Admirals. Dude have attack stop by Jozu and his fight against Vista was literally a drawn and his only wins is against East Blue Zoro and Daz Bones (Post Impel Down) . Meanwhile, Admirals made Yonko Commanders look a bunch of clowns.

By the time he fights Mihawk he will be way above admirals. Not to mention Mihawk is relative to Shanks since they had duels in the past, unless you believe Vista could also have gone to toe with Shanks? Bounties aren't definitive indictors of one's strength but a lot of time they give you a rough gauge. And Mihawk literally has a Yonkou level bounty, higher than 2 of the Yonkou.

People forgot that every time Oda shows the strength of a powerfull character, that character says "I become old & lost a lot of strength". This happened for all Top fighters characters, such as, Reiley, Garp & Whitebeard. Oda made it very clear that none of the current Top tier characters ( Shanks, Kaido, BM .. etc. ) are in the some level of the old school. ( Roger, Whitebeard, Reiley, Garp, Sengoku, Shiki ) The current emperrors, are in the some some level of the old school characters, but, after they become old. Why ? Simply, because there is a whole new level reserved to some characters ( Dragon, Mihawk, & maybe the Gorosey ) this room that Dragon & Mihawk will occupy, is exactly what old school ( Garp, Roger, Sengoku ) was in their prime & full strenth. So, yes, its.very possible that Oda left Mihawk & Dragon to the end because they are a full new level that we didn't see yet.

My 2 cents: I agree with Morj, Mihawk can be the World's Strongest Swordsman with Ethan being The Strongest Swordsman of Heaven. But there's no way in hell Figarland is stronger than Mihawk, because Garp exists. This is a man that has had a personal run in with Garp at Gods Valley, and he probably learned full and well Garp's attitude towards Celestial Dragons back then. Yet Garp is still alive, worse. Garp is allowed to openly disrespect the Celestial Dragons even in Mariejois. if Figarland or the Holy Knights were of equal or greater strength compared to Garp, he would be in Impel Down, or crucified.

The one thing about titles in Op it’s all global perception, Buggy is the best character to represent that, it comes down to these characters to prove themselves. Also adding to the point of global perception/reputation it’s limited to what the public actually knows, for example Imu is most likely the strongest character in one piece and only a few people actually knows he exists. Mihawk could be the strongest swordsman in the world but Oda can easily say Nusjuro is the strongest swordsman in heaven, Zoro wants his name to reach where? The heavens. Mihawk has a black blade but is it necessary to be the most powerful with the blade? Or is it relevant to having the strongest blade? We don’t know yet. What if Nusjuro leans more to his devil fruit like many other swordsmen in one piece? Well then it makes sense why he might not need a black blade, especially if Nusjuro ends up with another god fruit, a sword god or in this case sword saint. The narrative could very well be Zoro needed to become the worlds strongest swordsman to best the strongest in heaven.

See, Mihawk does crazy attacks and blasts at BASE level. He also hasn’t done a single actual effort attack or even gone remotely close to all out. He’s THIS strong at base. I can’t imagine when he’s actually trying. And the same logic is used all the time for Kizaru, the guy who has a crazy strong devil fruit and also doesn’t go all out ever but is often eagerly look towards when he does pop off. What’s the difference? Side note, he goes toe to toe with Shanks, similar to how Roger and White Beard go toe to toe. Mihawk was given the title by default. Roger more than likely was the previous WSS. After he did, it’s said Mihawk then challenged people until there was nobody left worth and he became the WSS and a Warlord because of that. The strongest person Mihawk has ever fought is Shanks all those years ago and he’s been fighting frauds since then, that’s why he was so bored in the beginning of the series and is looking for someone to surpass his former rival Shanks.
