They ruined five and Lila, Luther died having never found Sloane and he didn’t redeem himself as a leader since season one. Klaus completely regressed into his worst habits. Allison was never forgiven or took full accountability for her actions, lost two husbands, and had to give up her daughter. Viktor got in the way and caused another apocalypse by not killing Ben. And finally Diego died hating Five, resenting his wife, and also had to let his family go. Wtf were the writers thinking, every character got the worst ending they could have. Even Reginald looked stupid in the finale and was betrayed by his wife

That is all valid points, I do think that was intentional with this season though. The ultimate reveal was they are forever doomed to repeat their mistakes and end the world because their existence shouldn’t have happened. Hence why every season has an apocalypse and why I think they had them almost revert to how they started, to sort of further show that cycle. When you become attached to these characters that does suck but they still ultimately did the right thing and I think that is the difference. Despite being unable to fully overcome their individual issues, they were able to come together as a family in the end and essentially save the world finally, albeit, at the cost of their lives.

In season 1 he became that way because of an injection which saved his life during a mission gone wrong, it wasn’t an inherent apart of his powers. @@TheLaneDW I kinda just assume at this point that they thought audiences wouldn’t remember that his powers weren’t related to that (which fair enough it’s been years and Umbrella Academy isn’t a super well-known property) so they just went with the obvious look of powers being back. @TheLaneDW5 ай бұрын
It was a heroic suicide. They did it to save the whole world. Which their original goal, was to revert the timeline to 2019 from season 1 and they succeeded in doing that. He always had the most interesting sub plots but I really didn’t care for it here really, especially when its the final season. Having him imprisoned on his own the whole season just sucked.

You need to set up that kind of sacrifice, especially with flawed heroes who desperately want to live. You need to show them trying and trying and then going to this option. Yes, they have 3 end of the world behind them, but they survived. It has also been six years.+ It was never explained why they were the reason for the world ending. Was it the marigold? So, there was a new set of writers from s2. And the way Steve Blackman gets scenes written from other people who are not part of the writing team may have largely impacted - especially when we consider the writer and actor strikes - the trajectory of the show. I was liking it up till the end of the 4th episode. It really went downhill from there. I really was hating Lila’s character from the start of this season, being pushy, constantly lying, clearly not happy, and pretty much blaming Diego for all of this despite him just wanting her to be happy. Sure, he is a bit childish and way too obsessed with the CIA idea but his character is always like this and it’s consistent… so how come it’s suddenly a problem to her. Then I really don’t buy that Five would betray his brother like that. I’ve always felt that despite Five being cold and mean that he cares for nothing more than his family’s happiness and well-being. I knew they were kinda leaning into it in the beginning but I thought it was just gonna be a little joke that they set up and I thought it was finished when Diego found out that ‘That little boy in the coffee shop with Lila’ was actually just Five. But then episode 5 happened annddd ya, I hated it. It just felt like it destroyed Five entire character. I think they severely under utilized Allison like usual and unfortunately Klaus too, which was a huge downfall. Especially when I’m supposed to care about Claire in the end and we barely get any time. We totally lost Luther and Sloane’s whole story, and that was super disappointing. I think Viktor was the only character I can’t really criticize all that much. I appreciate that they went back and gave us the answers to the whole ‘Jennifer Incident’ but I almost feel like that was the ONLY question answered. This whole season was just too rushed and left the story with more plot holes and questions than it answered.

I am surprised you are among the few who liked the infidelity part of the season. Many dislike it. Klaus says Lila is the best in the family, but she is the worst, which pretty much caused the fallout between Diego and the five. She is as guilty as five but worse. She does what is convenient for her; she was with five when it suited her, and as soon as she came back, she was ready to ditch five. I really disked this part, it was unnecessary.. Five Despite being mentally 60, he was acting like a 10-year-old and was fine with breaking Diego and separating Lila from her family. But I am confused about Ben's death; if we saw the original Ben's ghost in the first 2 seasons, why did Ben not remember anything about Jennifer and about being shot dead. This was poorly explained. Despite being amazing, Luther was underutilized, and even Elliot Page(despite the amazing performance) could not save the season for me. The first 2 seasons are still fun and far superior to the 2 later seasons.

Yeah honestly of all the plot points that made the most sense to me. Five and Lila were going through different timelines and multiple stressful events never thinking they were going to make it home, only kinda natural for there to be some kind of connection after all that time. Five not informing her of the way home and continuing the relationship was a bigger problem, but Five doing stupid things for the first real person he’s been in a relationship with sounds about right for him, especially abandoning his family too, he really isn’t all that connected with them. As for why Ben didn’t know about being shot, that’s just the nature of writing a plot point later.
@TheLaneDW5 ай бұрын
Much like other comments, the Lila and 5 things. I think she was already wanting to leave Diego and 5 was always longing for a form of “normal life”. In this we see them stuck in the multiversal railway with 0 hope of return. They thought they were stuck, permanently. We then see them have a break after 5 years of this, which I am surprised they didn’t have sooner (just imagine 5 years straight of that). That is then what caused the relationship. It wasnt a choice made lightly or quickly. It was a sort of, as Lila put it, survival tactic. To 5 maybe not but he was always longing for this connection, and she knows everything about the commission and time travel, so who better a partner. For Lila, he is her only way out of this place if they ever get a way back. She may have truly loved him at the time but when they get a way back she says it wasn’t 100% truth and she almost goes back to Diego, or at least tries. I think it is a lot more layered than people think and that is just some of my thoughts on it 👍. Definitely an aspect of the show that is and will always be controversial. But I can personally see both sides of it and understand where you come from feeling that way.

I don’t like the whole “ oh we’re the reason ultimately that everything went wrong “ . You could see killing Jennifer and Ben being an issue that could cause multiple timelines splintering off . See I am the opposite. They are not the inherent cause, if anything it is Reginald. Yet they are the people good enough to sacrifice themselves to stop it. Like the Five and Lila romance, I mean sure it feels icky, but they were alone together for 6 years. They're bound to cling to each other. So to me it makes sense...but it was done so quickly in the show that I had to logic my way through it instead of really empathizing with the characters. The Ben and Jennifer plot, I don't know, it didn't hit for me. It was too much the show telling me what was going on instead of spending the time to show how they were developing or letting me see why they felt how they did. I honestly don't know why they even bothered giving them "powered up" abilities if they weren't really going to utilize them. Like Allison straight up mind controlled a dude in the second episode to shoot his allies, but she never does that again? As others have said, I was confused why Luther got hairy again. Definitely not related to his power so that was just bizarre. Some of the funny bits in the show felt really surface level and childish lol like Thunderbolt peeing on his headstone. I was so hoping, after having that scene with Klaus and Thunderbolt in the coffin, that Thunderbolt would kinda like hang around with Klaus lol I will say I really enjoyed Gene and Jean in the first few episodes lol I got a few good laughs out of their scenes and the baby shark bit actually did have me laughing every time lol The show had me interested in the first few episodes and excited to see what was happening and all that...but damn the last 2 episodes just felt so rushed. It felt so clunky with Viktor going to Ben (in what would be the final fight) alone and the others are just having a Christmas party? Its like the writers were like oh shit this is the big fight we need to have them all there, lets shoehorn in an excuse to get them all together at the last second. This season had good ideas, but just absolutely did not take the time to flesh them out for it to feel satisfying in ANY way. Left feeling very underwhelmed and disappointed sadly.

Luther and Klaus were responsible for almost every plot hole this season. I guess the main question is what happened to the umbrella academy. Is the afterlife that Klaus goes into with Luther in season 3 less powerful than time, does erasing the timeline mean that they never showed up there, and what about the "God" that was there whenever Klaus would show up, I feel like that is such a loose end that we desperately needed tied up but it wasn't, same with who tf made the subway. And Luther got such a short end of the stick this season. Number 1) He never found Sloan. 2) All of his character development was gone 3) This one upsets me most, he finally got his natural body back, something he wanted for so long and clearly enjoyed having, yet marigold somehow brought his ape body back which makes absolutely no sense at all. He had his powers his entire life before he was injected with ape DNA, why does this body come back when he takes marigold, this makes the marigold concept so confusing, like what is it. And what about all the original children who had marigold in them, the ones we never saw in the show, how come they didn't have to be sacrificed to the Almighty cleanse. If they did then why was there only 8 marigold flowers at the end, and another thing about those stinking flowers, are they not marigold? Wouldn't the timeline still be split. This is literally the most plot hole filled season of all time. They even introduce new plot holes, like Viktor being able to suck out people's marigold, why didn't he just do that and then sacrifice himself, he has been the cause of almost every apocalypse, that to me would've been the most fitting ending

What a twist!!! I cried like a baby at the end. I felt the loss. (WOW it’s a tv show pull yourself together! ) I still question the existence of the children . If a parent is removed without a trace and it is absolute not even a faint memory, how can the child exist? All timelines destroyed ( or become united with some editing) how is it possible to place them on the train and come out at the end of any timeline to exist without one half of their DNA ? I get they were taken out of the hot zone ( the city Ben and Jenifer became enthralled, fused together. Great googly moogly what a sight) but how can the children still exist without the addition of two sets of DNA ? Immaculate conception on a grand scale? What’s the deal? I think they ran out of time and needed a fluffy moment because everyone else is eradicated . Or is it a window to a sequel. I’m so confused.
@TheLaneDW5 ай бұрын
Yea I loved the ending and was definitely shocking. The families of Lila and Allison surviving was odd but the only explanation I have is that they found the train if the original timeline. As we see people from across the multiverse can exist in multiple universes, it allows them to go there freely. Not the best explanation but just the fact 5 can go in other timelines without consequence means I dont hate it here but it did feel forced in there at the end when it didnt need to be really.

The reason why Diego and Lilah were so gung-ho about going on a mission and leaving their family is because they were both unhappy living a regular, family oriented life. They both just wanted to go back to the old life of action. That's why they fell in love with each other in the first place. They're both psychotic. None of the protagonists in this show are well-adjusted individuals. The story is about tragedy, not happiness. These characters have, for the most part, negative character arcs with occasional positive bumps. I was satisfied overall with the season and the ending. I would have liked it if the season had at least eight episodes, though, so the storyline could have had a little bit more room to breathe.
@TheLaneDW5 ай бұрын

Season 4 was terrible. What happened to Sloan? Why did they make Luther a dumb idiot. In season 1 he was the loyal leader of the group and ended up the dumb character of the show. Klaus was non existent. Diego was getting dumb for this season too. Five and Lila hooking up was the worst decision ever made. They made this season all about Victor saving the day or at least trying too. He/She is so annoying, all about daddy issues and always playing the victim. It’s a shame because I loved the first season, wa still into it in the season season and third. Biggest letdown since game of thrones.

I dont think it is that big a let down for me. I like all the ideas they had, I just wish they had more time to develop them. The ending was, concept was, probably the only way the show would end. With them breaking the cycle at the cost of their lives. It just needed more breathing room I think.

I liked the series as a whole, liked all of the characters and Vic's arc after speaking to his dad and them both learning to talk things out I also really liked. But for me, I'd have liked one more, just one more episode. The finale was okay, and it felt like the right ending, but I didn't really feel the gravity of "we tried everything" when Five visited the subway diner. I'd have liked to have just settled for maybe an episode, or half of one, where we actually SEE Five trying different ways to fix the timelines, rather than just seeing multiple versions of himself and immediately thinking "we should all just not exist, that'll work." The place the academy ended up feeling about each other with so many unresolved issues also didn't sit right with me, half of an episode dedicated to Five trying to fix things and failing, and another half an episode dealing with the family dynamic of how Diego felt about Lila and Five, how Luther and Sloan didn't happen or Alison and Ray, and I'd have loved a small montage scene where each of the characters saw peace, maybe Klaus getting sober again right before the end (I can completely see how and why he relapsed) and giving everyone time to see and spend time with the ghosts of their past and everyone having proper closure would have been really fitting right before the Cleanse wrapped up. All in all, compared to the other seasons, it was okay, but just one more episode would have been great. Also I'm completely open to the idea of a spin off show where we just follow Five and Lila through the 7 years they spent together, them having a relationship felt rushed in the main show, but after that amount of time with someone it's completely understandable, would be nice to see all the universes they went too and just HOW they got as close as they did emotionally.
@TheLaneDW5 ай бұрын
Yea I agree. The biggest issue for me is the time. More time to explore everything you said would have been better. The ideas are all great IMO just not fully fleshed out. He needed time and the boxes contents to find his own answers. You all must have known there was an attraction between Five and Lila . She was bored and tired of being overlooked. She loves Diego and her kids but she is such a capable person to be treated like a piece of fine china by Diego or should I say a lessor adult became too much for her. @@TheLaneDW I think the performances were still of high quality, but the writing is completely indefensible. They just took elements of Attack on Titan, Rick and Morty, your typical love triangle, and mushed them together. It’s not to say there was nothing to like about Season 4, Episode 2 is a strong standalone episode, largely due to actor performances. The concept of the ending was reasonable, but extremely poorly executed. Looking in a vacuum, Season 4 is just a poor series of television, regardless of what franchise it came from. The cast did the best they could with the writing, but it was ultimately all directionless and unfulfilling.

If anyone needed medication I would say Allison did. Her power that would corrupt any of us had to controlled and measured out constantly. She wanted to be with her daughter. That was her underlying ultimate goal through the series. Funny what happens to someone when they carry a child for months there is often a pull more powerful than the strongest magnetic attraction. Everything must align . With here sterile upbringing I felt she needed to be there for her daughter.

I gotta say that while I enjoyed the first few episodes, the story as a whole was a rushed mess, Five and Lila were a terrible decision and horribly disrespectful to Diego, a lot of the siblings felt out of character, there are way too many unanswered questions and unresolved plot lines, and I strongly disliked the ending because it didn't feel earned at all. But I really respect that you're willing to give a positive perspective on this season in a sea of widespread intense hate (with fans comparing this season to GOT S8, saying they are heartbroken, saying that it ruined the whole show, saying that they feel the ending sends a horrible, nihilistic message, etc). There are lots of shows/films with polarized/mixed reactions, but here things seem to be heavily lopsided. I really wanted to love this season, as I love the characters, and the show deserved an excellent ending. Initially I thought I WAS vibing with the season, and I was confused by the reviews, but when I got to the final two episodes, I understood. So I'm glad someone was able to enjoy it at least. You may genuinely be one of two fans who liked the Lila/Five ship haha.
@genmaicha.lapsang5 ай бұрын
I don't understand why people thought the ending was nihilistic. They did everything for their families. Overcame their selfish abusive behaviours, Made the ultimate sacrifice, endured pain, and in the end forgave each other.
@calvarydominique5 ай бұрын
@@genmaicha.lapsang They didn’t do any of that though? The ending wasn’t earned. They were still just as selfish and abusive at the end, and they didn’t even forgive each other (five and diego were still at odds, for example). They also had no time to come to the decision to make that sacrifice. It was all so rushed. Here’s a Reddit post someone made that puts it better than I can: Season 4 to Abused Kids: Self Delete Please This show was about 7 kids raised by an abusive, neglectful parent, and if they can heal from their trauma and find a way to relate to each other without their shared abuser forcing a connection. It had three main plot elements. 1. Can these abused kids heal from their trauma? 2. Can they relate to each other and become a family without their shared abuser forcing a connection? 3. Can they use their special gifts in a meaningful way, like saving lives or the world? Or will their gifts damage the world? And in the end, instead of healing or finding how to use their gifts, the show says "You're the problem. Not the abusive parent, not enemies who want to attack you. Your special gifts are nothing but a terrible issue. You're causing the problems, kill yourself and the world will be better off!" And in the end, once the abused kids commit mass suicide, the world is now shiny and beautiful and perfect. Even better, all the psychotic murderers and villains from past seasons are leading peaceful happy lives in this blissful paradise where the abused kids are now erased from existence. Not only did the abused kids never win any battles against evil, but the villains were only evil because the abused kids were messing up the world by existing!
@genmaicha.lapsang5 ай бұрын
@@calvarydominique But the issue is that they were the problem. Yes abuse is bad but the point is that that is NEVER an excuse to then turn around and be abusive yourself. When an abused person does that then yes, they are the problem and it is up to the abused person to fix themselves. They need to fix it, not the world fixes their abuse for them. Life doesn't work that way
@calvarydominique5 ай бұрын
@@genmaicha.lapsang oh wow, well that’s just a fundamentally right-wing worldview that I disagree with from a philosophical perspective. Obviously being abused is not an “excuse” to abuse others, but it is an explanation. And that doesn’t mean formerly abused children should just die.

@@calvarydominique You can call it what you want, but it's the truth. These characters in the end saved the world. And most importantly Lyla secured her own families safety before saying good by. For such a woke show (which I like) to go out on such a based note is probably going to upset people.

Overall I enjoyed the season and the ending of the show. But it did feel a bit rushed, and like Netflix was nice enough to not cancel the show, but they told the show runners they were only getting 6 episodes and X amount of money to finish it all up. I think that's why theres stuff that was never fully explained or wrapped up, not enough time. And why it didnt show way more cool stuff (Like all the different universes Five and Lila traveled to. Too expensive.) And although im not a fan of the Lila, Five & Diego love triangle, (It felt kinda forced and out of no where to me.) it didnt totally ruin the season or characters for me like ive seen soooo many other people say it did for them. I can understand why Lila and Five would eventually have a thing if they were alone together for that long. Maybe if the season was longer and it was more fleshed out I wouldve liked it more. But overall I enjoyed it and im happy I got an ending to the show and it didnt just get cancelled. An alright season. I liked it better than the last, but the pacing of this one had me bored in places. Each character had their high points and low points, but only a few stayed consistent throughout. As one of the other comments, it would been nice to see Luther re-become the leader like they show in all the flash backs and in season 1. I did like how everything finished with them taking the ultimate sacrifice. I wish there was a whole episode on the Five's in the deli. At the very end, sure the Umbrella Academy was erased, but Reginald Hargraves was still alive, maybe/maybe not spinoffable; His character could be interesting in his own show if written correctly. Maybe as like a Men In Black style with less aliens meets Dirk Gently Holistic Detective. Your takes are interesting and different than mine, but does show we find different things charming with the show and what we came to it for. A great and engaging first season. A mostly great or good second season. An okayish and real confusing/convoluted third season. A goodish fourth season with a few to many eh spots.

I said this in reply post but I think that it should be said here, For such a, "woke" show to end on such a "based" note is probably going to upset most of the fans. In essence the ending message is that it is up to you as an individual to be a better person, to break the cycle of abuse, to stop blaming your own bad choices on pervious abuse. And that ultimately it's not up to the world to change for you. Even in the execution of the ending, Lyla ensures the safety of her nuclear and extended family BEFORE committing to anything no matter what is happening in the world. No one is sacrificed unwillingly. Again such a thing is very "right wing." If you want to call it that.

So this is what I think of S4 as a whole. Tbh, I thought MOST of the season was fun and enjoyable Luther evolved into a lovable comedic character, Viktor did great standing up to his father, I didn’t hate Allison this season like I did in S3 and even though Five and Lila making love was scummy, it was still an interesting direction for me Believe it or not, my biggest problem with this season actually wasn’t our favorite superpowered family being erased(while I didn’t necessarily think it was the best direction from a writing standpoint, the team had an emotional and touching farewell) But its the fact that POS Sir Reginald Hargreeves ONCE AGAIN got off Scott Free and actually got a happy ending despite being the one that cause all this BS in the first place. Its like the showrunners have some obsession with making him win over pur protagonists at every turn, even though Reginald hasn’t been that interesting or complex and every time it seems his character may improve, he goes back to his old thoughtless ways.
@TheLaneDW5 ай бұрын
That all sounds similar to how I feel to be honest. I would argue that Reginald didn't exactly get a "Happy Ending" but he definitely got off easy after all he did. Reverting the timeline means he is technically still out there somewhere he just never made the children.
