One of the good things about cars as they get older is that statistics become less and less important and the way the car looks and how you feel when driving it become the only things that matter. A car like this was simply outclassed when new by the MX5 both in terms of performance and in terms of value for money. However, now with the relative scarcity of these combined with its good looks (plus looks that noticeably different to anything else on road) it becomes a Sunday car that will deliver lots of fun, will likely not depreciate and gives access to the Lotus community, who are on the whole great fun and willing to share insight and their knowledge. Ultimately when you drop the roof on any convertible it feels fast, with its small size and low seating position it will be great fun to drive and ultimately unlike a modern sportscar when you drive it hard you won't be risking going to jail!!

Temperature gauge looked way too high when you were driving?! Normally it drops very quickly once the car is moving or the radiator fans come on. Might be worth checking in case there is something up with the thermostat etc., in the cooling system. Had one for 29 years and it has been a brilliant car.

I have a M100 in white (non turbo version). It was a barn find that had not moved in 15 years. It has been an amazing experience and journey restoring this potential classic. I find each time I take it out it is a magnet for attention and well wishers. A real lovely car to drive and is completely a different drive to my Audi V8 convertible.

Had one. It was rubbish and it had a full rebuild. Genuinely not fast, or comfortable, the roof leaked, every other day something fell off. Sold it and bought a 205 1.9 CTI, 8 years later I still have the CTI. Glad I had the Lotus though, but there’s a reason some Excel / Eclats are now eclipsing the values of these. Glad I had it though, hope this is a good one.

Good one!! I much rather spend money on that than a stupid old Range Rover. Even if it doesn't meet any emissions standards. Super nice summer car. If you EVER give in to your itch and go back to a Range Rover, save your pennies and I totally recommend the vogue convertible. Very few cars say 'decadent' and look even BETTER when they're super covered with mud. I totally agree about a performance car like that M4 .... specially when people spend their lives stuck in traffic.

The only thing the M100 did wrong was to appear at a similar time to the MX5, and let's be honest, the MX5 conquered everything, so it's no shame on the Lotus. I don't normally like white cars but the Elan looks great in white, it's such a pretty little car.

just got one and love it - deffo more please - maybe show roof mechanism and engine - your boost guage will almost certainly be a bad earth at the sender orange round thing drivers side near bonnet hinge

Check the earth on the red boost transducer under the bonnet drivers side for the boost gauge

I planned for the M100 to be my first Lotus back in the early 2000s having bought a magazine with the first road test of the car back in 1990 when I was 17. Alas, that wasn't meant to be and my first Lotus ended up being a Europa S, and I now own an early Evora & an Elise S3, but hanker for the Peter Stevens, stylist of the McLaren F1, desiged M100. More M100 videos please. PMN Engineering do uprated brakes and LED headlights by the way. Both I would consider as upgrades if I owned a M100.

From what I recall, people (purists) were weird about the M100 because its front wheel drive , but it was getting rave reviews for the way it drove. I can remember it coming out and it was one of the cars I aspired it too. A mate of mine had a few lotuses and so did a mate of his and they both said the brakes were a little spongy. My mate now drives a 911 and he said the brakes are so firm under his foot, he actually took hs first back to Porsche and asked them to check the servo was connected. They were like, that’s just how our cars are. When he told them his lotuses weren’t, they laughed and were like that’s because it’s a lotus. Great to see your back Lucy - do you and George have a channel where you cover your travel adventures?

Spot on with your comments about “usability” of the Elan. I’ve been very fortunate in owning a range of cars, including a 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo, a 1957 MGA and a Renault Megane 225. I just bought an Elan and it’s like the love-child of those three! The “parts bit” eclectic fun of the MGA, the ridiculousness of the 911 and the amazing front wheel drive handling of the Megane. Importantly, all usable in the real-world and just produces smiles, in the driver and in people you are passing by. Great review.

I love Lotus! Good to see a crazy red hair woman blasting it on the street of UK! That door closing sound is exactly same as My Defender 300tdi! Good car!
