It sounds like a 996 is the one you want, therefore get the 911 rather than a Boxster. If you do choose to push the boat out and get an early 997, get a boroscope check done as part of the inspection. Other than that, I would recommend getting one with a ton of history that has been loved, over mileage considerations. Ultimately it’s all a roll of the dice as to whether it’ll cost in maintenance, but it’s a fun dice to be rolling! Good luck! 🙂

Owned 9 Porsches, worked my way up to a 911, sod that, just go and buy the car you want, you will get there anyway. Owned 2 996 C4S, also 4 997 C4S, one of which I owned and bought back 3 times. I love the anonymity of Porsches, not just the 911’s these cars, a really easy car to live with. Mileage is not an indication condition, get the newest, highest mileage, you will get a better car, they need to be used, not sat in a garage. Only use E5 Super, by Shell BP etc, never supermarket fuel, they need the additives. Always used mine as my daily

I got into Porsche ownership 4 years ago, and I’m well above 30. Got the cayman 987 first, and passed that onto my son and he is 30 years old, and up graded to a Boxster 981. Each time I thought that will be my last and forever car. I think it’s great to have a Porsche journey and you appreciate each step. However I have no major desire to own a 911. Good luck on your choice and it will be exciting whatever you choose

I pulled the trigger years ago on what was once my dream car... a Honda s2000. Enjoyed it for years then I did it all over again with a Nissan GTR in 2009. Enjoyed it again for years, then I finally got a 2006 987.1 Cayman S after carefully studying it and it's "issues". Overblown, but not untrue. It can certainly happen even after your borescope shows no issues. I have spent years collecting research on this and studying my own car... which is still original and still flawless at 60k miles. You are at the mercy of the hidden history of the car so its a bit like gambling. If the car passes its PPI WITH a full clean borescope and it shows that it has been DRIVEN and not a garage queen it is probably worth the risk. Most of the scoring is due to revving a garage queen when cold in combination with factory flaws and possibly leaking fuel injectors. Scoring happens because of a momentary lack of oil in a running engine. Anything that dilutes or washes away the oil at just the wrong time is always the cause. Dripping fuel is not a lubricant but it can happen because of the unique design of these engines. In my case, I replaced the injectors, coil pack, spark plugs, changed to Driven DT40 oil, changed the water pump and the air-oil separator (AOS). Your oil quality, injectors and AOS in combination with the care you take to warm the car up by DRIVING not IDLING are the best things you can do to keep a 987.1 S on the road. Never idle your car to warm it up, just get in and drive but keep the revs under 3k for about 10-15 minutes. If you have a slightly bigger budget, go for a 987.2 which was designed to eliminate these worries. You can also play it safe with a base cayman 987.1 but "safe" has never been my approach with my passions. I actually love to drive my 987.1 Cayman S just as much as my 991.2 Turbo S. This one is nowhere near the budget you are talking about but I want to stress that mid-engine manual with hydraulic steering is a feeling I will NEVER give up. Look for circa 2005 - 2009 reviews on youtube of the original Cayman. Tiff Needell on 5th Gear and the original Stig lap on Top Gear can be found on here. It was and is considered one of the best driving machines ever made. Do it and never look back. You only have your one life. Go out with a smile on your face.

987 Boxster/Cayman is the sweet spot if you're on a budget. That's where I landed with a Cayman S. The mid-engine cars don't have the prestige of the 911, so they sell for less, but those in the know admit that they are better balanced and drive better than an equivalent generation/spec 911.

I've can't recommend the 981 Cayman or Cayman S enough. Naturally aspirated, powerful enough for the UK roads, much cheaper to run and maintain than a 911 and still modern enough as it came alongside the 991.1 991 in 2012. Whatever you do, don't try my experiment of getting a cheap 996... not worth it! 🤣

@simonwilliams1740Ай бұрын
The ims bearing is overhyped, its not a common failure, although it is peace of mind if one has been changed. Bore score is also not that common in the boxster 986 and 996 911, it is more of an issue with the 997. If you have your heart set on the c4s, I'd go for that. It is better looking and will hold its value more, hence the higher price now. Enjoy the channel BTW 😊

Ok, so if you start with a 996 carrera 4s you still have 997 gen 1 and 2, 991 gen 1&2, 992 gen 1&2. You also have gt cars and turbos. So if you start with 911, you’ve still got plenty of generations to go through. There is also, as you say, bossier - and don’t forget the cayman. Your 20 grand budget could go further with them. I think 996 is good starting point.

Hi Lucy, go for a 997, newer than a 996, and the 3 of you can go out in it together, if you buy a Boxter there will always be days when the three of you want to go out in it, but the Boxter only has two seats.
@richardwinder9608Ай бұрын
Buy one that has had the big jobs done, such as brake pipes, air con condensers and a suspension refresh etc. they can all add a chunky number to the ongoing costs. My 996 c4 had 9 owners when I bought it and a good history. They’re all old cars so buy one that looks like it’s been looked after. Advantage of buying from a private seller is that you can get a gut feel about how it will have been treated as well.

You will need to do some DIY wrenching, but if you find a good shop, and know how much parts cost, and have some friends, youre set. Finally, dont get a cayman. Now, if you wanted a cayman, get one. But if you want a 911, get a 911. You would look at the cayman and see the shadow of the car you actually wanted. At worse you can buy the 911, like it but its a bit expensive, sell it, get a cayman knowing full well youve "been there, done that"! Lucy, I would say start off with a Cayman or Boxster and see how you get on. The roads in your part of the world are so congested that you'll not be able to use the 911 to it's full potential, unless you take it to a track. At least you can enjoy thrashing an old boxster around those Sussex roads somewhere near its limit. You'll save yourself a few quid as well.

There is no rule as to starting with a Boxster and working your way up. Can go backwards or sideways. If you were starting from the low then start with a rusty 924 but you won’t like it. Just pick a pretty one and buy it, stop overthinking! I have a 2001 996 C2, Manual. I've been quoted 1500 euros to have the clutch and IMS replaced at a local Porsche specialist. It's really not that big of a deal. If you buy a car which hasn't had it done yet, it's not a problem, 90+% of cars never have an issue and a car that hasn't had a problem yet is no worse than one with a replaced IMS. They're all 20+ years old at this point, there is always a possibility of issues - budget accordingly, it's like the L322, you need to have a bit of a savings pot for just-in-case. It's not unusual for adverts to not mention bore scoring, most owners don't even think about it, it's the same sort of paranoia you get on Range Rover forums about the airbags or the turbo's - it's unlikely to ever happen, if it does, it's a few grand to fix - put a pot aside and don't worry about it. life's too short! C4S, C4, C2, it's just preference, choose what you love. I went with the C2 as it's a sports car, I don't think 4wd is needed on a sports car. I love the narrow body look with no wings/aero, no un-necessary vents, just as Pinky Lai designed it, unblemished, lovely smooth shape. Feel free to message me with questions, I bought my 996 recently to complement my 4.4 TDV8 L322, it's a perfect combination IMHO! :)

Go for the 911 if that is the car you want, go for the dream. Settling for an alternative is always going to be regret. Porsche 911 prices are coming down. It's a buyers market.

I used to have one of these, brilliant cars 😎

the 996 C4S is gorgeous. the early 997's are all bad, don't buy unless it's had an engine rebuild. The C4S is just a very pretty car and you'll end up just staring at it all day. Boxsters are good but don't waste time go for the 911.

Boxster is best bang for buck, but people are soppy and think a 911 is better. Bit like going for champagne when cremant pretty much the same without the name

You have to physically look at cars. People lie in adverts.

A 997 or 993 is the dream for me, not massively keen on the 996. I could do it but my wife and children won’t let me sell my 1968 VW Camper.

Not sure if you know or care , but is that your post code on the autotrader search? Should block it out maybe?
@LucyOnCarsАй бұрын
no it's not, just a postcode from the same town😊

Lucy, why am I now looking at Porsches on Autotrader when I should be asleep?? Now potentially considering a Cayman

Worth the lack of sleep 😂

Boxster only has two seats, if the RR is off the road, at least you can fit a small child in a 911 🤷🏼♂️

My friend bought a 997 for 27K. He bought it round for me to drive. I told him I can’t go full tilt because the engine sounds off in some way. The car went to Porsche and they inspected the engine with camera. Found a hairline crack. Oh god 27k for a new engine. Luckily after much fighting the garage sorted out the engine. Could have been the biggest loss ever.😂 He’s also lucky he bought it to a real driver.

Forget the 996. Get a Cayman.
@MarkClegg-g2mАй бұрын
You should look at the 987 Cayman 😊

Start at the bottom and work your way up otherwise you won’t have the experience and pleasure of trying them out

I have a 987 boxster in red. Manual low mileage. Would you be interested in having a look?
@NorthWalesPiscatorАй бұрын
Don’t bother with a Boxster no point working your way up. Get what you want. You know the issues with the 996. Going for one with mega low mileage is no guarantee that it will be problem free.Porsche’s need to be driven. Cannot wait to see what you end up with. Oh when your get your 996 only use premium fuel none of that supermarket rubbish.

First question is Do you want a 2 seater car or a car your child can also fit in.?

If you prefer a coupe, & budget is a serious consideration, then why not look at a Cayman? Also consider a nicely specced non S model, they're still more than fast enough to have fun in, but are less appealing to "boy racer" types, & therefore less likely to have been thrashed...

996 targa❤️👌

Just get it, or you'll always think why didn't I? The prices are already sky rocketing the more you're pondering over it!

If i was you i would not go for a Boxter,reasons why are you are already talking about selling it bfore you buy it and it's a convertable and i think if you do you'll be thinking about the 996 4 S you should have bought when you test drove it,that was tidy and from a porsche specialist,996 4 S all day for me😀👍
