Another thing is that not only is sans trying to make you rage quit but he also tries to reason with you, constantly talking about how you can reset at any time and he won’t remember any of this, saying you can really still be friends if you just turn back now, while also incorporating his personality into the fight to remind you all the good times you’ve had and how it really still can be back to normal if you’ll just reset
@ThaCataBoi2 ай бұрын
Honestly I hate anyone who only sees sans killing you when you spare him as him betraying you. He specifically states that “if we’re really friends, you won’t come back.” He’s not just making you angry for the sake of it, he’s giving you the opportunity to go back, because at this point sparing Sans, Asgore and whoever else is left isn’t enough. Once you come back, he says “well, I guess that means we never really WERE friends, but don’t tell that to the other sans’s.” Speaking of which, I don’t get everybody using that as a way to explain AUs, as it’s pretty clear he’s just talking about the other iterations of sans that are murdering you.

you sort of highlighted it but by far my favourite detail in this fight comes from sans's dialogue saying 'my special attack. sound familiar?' because the only way that would sound familiar would be if you had fought papyrus in a neutral route. masterful writing on tobys part honestly the fact he could predict most players would do a neutral route first and in most cases be absolutely spot on in that prediction is awesome. (though the genocide route is very much designed to not be something you do as your first route and stumble upon accidentally so i suppose that helps)

The way I see Sans fught is honestly connected to how he speaks with Susie in Deltarune: He's a janitor, not a cashier. He's quite literally the only guy left to be in the role as the final boss, so he decides to dig his slippers and commits to being the ultimate troll of boss battles. In other words (in my opinion): he isn't the final boss, he's just the other guy.

Sans is my favorite character in fiction period. I played Undertale for the first time back in 2018 on the switch, and it took me 2-3 years to beat him because I gave up for a time, the only time I had ever given up on a fight, and I respect the hell out of him for it and many other things. My favorite part of his fight is that he’s just screwing with you, taunting you to give up, which is something I wish I could see in other games. He’s hilarious, he’s creative, and he doesn’t bother following the rules of the game because why should he, you killed everyone he knew.

I'd like to point out a few details I've noticed, having watched this fight a hundred times (and probably more): 1. It's obvious, but Sans takes advantage of the loopholes the battle system has. Getting your first turn? Sans uses that against you. Trying to attack him? He dodges that. Hoping your armor can protect you against his attacks? Doesn't matter because KR is what makes your invincibility frames essentially non-existent. Hell, he attacks you while it's your turn, and sparing him results in him killing you, akin to the betrayal kills you do. In culmination of this, his special attack is nothing, ensuring he can stall and waste more of your precious time. 2. It's a bit of a stretch, but his eye represents Patience and Justice, the former having the patience to troll murderers like you and the latter giving justice for most of the monsters you killed. 3. Sans doesn't put anything at all in his attacks. What makes Papyrus' attacks different is that his bones move around vertically. In addition, he puts a lot of passion in his bones, as seen in his final attack. Finally, Papyrus' bones disappear upon hitting you while Sans bones' don't, which is intentional in order to make Sans infamously hard as he is. 4. He doesn't use Gaster Blasters and Bones in the same place. Sure, it may look like he's using both of them in some of his attacks, but not once has he ever done them at the same time. 5. Sans does the "4-directional gravitation slam" bone attack 5 times, the last being implemented in his penultimate attack. 6. There are no orange bones here, despite what others may say. One of the first instances orange bones are used is Disbelief Papyrus. 7. Most of his dialogue suggests his true nature, and the reason why he's so nihilistic in the first place. So just to sum it up, Sans can't really bother anything to try because everything will just be reset in the end. The only reason why he's fighting you is because the thought of a world being erased motivated him to do so. 8. Sans' fight is much more deadly without KR. If I recall correctly, KR keeps you alive even when you don't have health until it runs out. So it's probably put here for gimmick purposes to make the lack of invincibility frames feel fair. 9. You cannot continue the fight if you don't make an attack, indicated by Sans not talking if you do anything other than attack. So you're pretty much on an endless loop of Sans' attacks until you keep attacking. 10. Sans has two phases. It's obvious, however Sans Fangames make it more apparent by adding separate fights per phase like Last Breath does. This fight doesn't, as it's just a single fight with two phases, no checkpoints in-between. 11. As a result of fighting him, Serious Mode is activated here. It's why Instant Noodles function differently here, along with a few items not making noises upon consumption. 12. The amount of numbers listed here is the same as Sans' unique pre-fight dialogues every time you die. Which is where I'll be ending it here because good god I cannot find more ideas to add with. That is all from what I observed so far.

@EnoEsoАй бұрын
If I recall correctly, KR is not to make the fight easier. KR effectively doubles the damage Sans does, since it adds one KR for every hit, and that KR then takes away 1 HP. KR can keep you alive for a little longer, but overall it's probably easier without it. It would pretty be thematically weird if Karma in the Genocide route helped you. (This is from what I remember from wiki scrolling and playing. Not sure if it's super accurate.) There's also a little more I can add to this list: 13. KR is Karma. Not Karmic Retribution or anything similar; this is proven by the flavor text showing "Doomed to death of KARMA!" if you somehow get a nearly impossible high karma amount. Only possible on 1 attack with RNG, if I remember right. 14. Sans has an unused sprite of him with his hands clenched, sort of like the shrug. Might've been used in the fight, but it isn't, probably because it looks pretty weird for Sans to do such a dramatic pose. Some fangames and fan animations bring it back, though. 15. Sans switches out of his Comic Sans font and uses capital letters in the first intro. Sans also does this when telling Frisk they "...You'd be dead where you stand." Even with some of his more dramatic lines, like in the Neutral endings, he doesn't bother to change his grammar. This is one of the only parts where he actually does. 16. According to Sans, he knows how many times you've died based on your expression alone (up to 11 times before stopping). I kind of understand why people first thought he remembered resets, because *dear God* that is a weird talent. It also seems that Sans can tell that you've killed him before by the look on your face. 17. There was a theory that Sans' sleeping Zs at the end of the fight were in the "Aster" font, which connected him to W.D. Gaster again. However, I looked it up, and apparently it doesn't fit well enough and is more likely a custom Z.

The part of Sans' fight that resonates most with me is the fact that he's still keeping his promise during it. He KNOWS you just come back so really it doesn't matter if he kills you, and he's actively trying to get you to QUIT rather than just kill you. Undyne tries to kill you but Sans tries to stop you, because as he said, if you take another step forward... You're REALLY not going to like what happens next. I think characters you spend the most time with were actually Alphys(calls) and Mettaton because of his shows. Maybe, Papyrus if you go on date with him

*"You feel your sins crawling up your back."* That's right, a monster that at first we have only seen as someone lazy and ignorant of your actions, SANS, comes to you to punish the terrible actions you committed, making you suffer again and again what you have made others suffer. monsters. Gloating and mocking your constant failure, being aware that you have restarted the battle over and over again, even making you think that he can forgive you and give you a chance, STABBING you in the back as a sign that you NO longer have forgiveness for what you caused. Honestly, I never understood why people (fandom) make Sans seem like some kind of vigilante or vengeful hero, if the joke of the combat is the mockery of your attempt to feel like a powerful genocide, when he is beating you up! Someone who is not even at the heels of your power, the irony that a lazy monster weaker than you is the one who is destroying your pride! Indeed, it is cinema. PS: comment based, VERY BASED, on another commented video. PD 2: Good vid! Happy Anniversary Undertale! ^_^

OUGH I LOVE THIS VIDEO SO MUCH It points out a lot of the same stuff ive always had to bring up in discussions about his fight AAAAA Incoming rant: Sans’ fight and Papyrus’ murder. During Sans’ fight, like you pointed out, THERES A LOT OF REFERENCES TO PAPYRUS IN IT Like first, starting with his strongest attack, asking you before if you if you believe “anybody can be a good person if they just try”, and the concept of just having a “special attack”. Even throwing in a petty “Sound familiar?”. Not to mention, some of his attacks are the exact same as Papyrus’, just harder- Sans’ fights whole point is to show you that he is not like his brother. He is not going to play fair. You aren’t either, after all. His goal is to show you how much easier things could be if you had just NOT committed a genocide. If you just RE-SET. Something you also put in that I LOVE and also have more to say on- is the fact that they both spare you, and you blind sided papyrus so sans blind sides you. Both of their speeches even carry the same beats, with the whole acknowledgment that youre a “freaking weirdo” but then suggesting that we can all just be friends agin. Of course Sans’ way of “all being friends again” is a bit… different- but in the end, he is actually giving you a chance at becoming a better person by resetting. They also BOTH have a “hug of acceptance.” Sans opens his arms, and welcomes you into what seems like a friendly hug. saying “c’mere, pal” Also both of the fights end with them exhausted. No essay just really fucking weird and sad and I wanna cry.

The Sans fight is phenomenal. It deserves the praise it gets. It flips the dynamic on its side and makes you feel like the monster. He breaks the fourth wall by remove invincibility frames, safety in the menu, ability to attack, flee and even spare. Heck, he even takes the first move, and I love his special attack being nothing. I've heard a couple people say it's underwhelming and they are right, and it's a good thing that it is. At the end of the day, Sans is still a lazy skeleton who can't even put his sock away. I don't think there will ever be a fight like Sans'.

As much as I don't like UT, I love the ideas put into this final fight. It really does feel like it's not Sans, but the game which is throwing everything at you to make you forfeit. Throwing in a comic relief due to everyone else being down or in shelters, making the patterns kaizo-hard, introducing new mechanics out of the blue (like KARMA and menu attacks) and throwing in a puzzle segment at the end that's tricky to figure out blind, when all of them up until this point were mainly obvious and pretty much there for filler.

What amplifies his death even more for me is that he really means it when he says "Don't say I didn't warn you" because if you do a pacifist route after, you can't. Sure you can technically do it all the same and get the ending, but Chara has your soul, and there's nothing you can do to stop that. It's even better for someone like me who did geno first, cus now a TRUE pacifist is out of the question. I've only ever gotten the soulless pacifist end, not true pacifist. Also, call me an idiot because for some reason I still don't fully get his last quote. It's sad I, guess, but what does he mean by it?

Also that he knows your weakness. You cant rely on i-frames, every weapon is useless, the first time we see a poison mechanic, as you said it takes IRL determination to win, he gives us the feeling that he is speaking to us the player AND we feel unsatisfied after killing him making us wonder if it was worth it The fight feels more like you are having an actual fight, the theme ROCKS (the classic megalovania it just fits the moment more than any remix).
@314Pirasy2 ай бұрын
Another layer of irony is that at the end, Sans' plan would surely have made many people think the game is softlocked and quit, but his dialogue is sprinkled in a way that fuels the player's curiosity just a bit more. The very same curiosity that led us here.

sans fight success not only comes from subverting everything undertale has taught you but subverting the entire rpg system as a whole. Toby already expanded on the idea of changing how rpg fights worked with its battle system but sans takes that a step further by cheating the very functions of a normal RPG in every way. The enemy attacks first, he gets to attack you while it’s your turn in a turn based battle, he completely dodges an attack he’s suppose to take, and he cheats the entire system of a turn based fight by refusing to even take his turn in the end. In a way it’s almost like Sans is the most “human” thing you fight because he somehow understands the mechanics and rule sets of his own universe.

We need boss fights even if it’s not sans to capture what Toby did. And stop making them genocide it’s getting kinda boring. Make them be multiple choices, sans’s fight was perfect but it overshadowed everything else. But if you ignore that and don’t gaslight it. It fits perfectly

I genuinely feel as if the Sans fight is incomplete without the rest of Genocide's bosses. The fight against Undyne the Undying clearly happens because she's given plot armor, as she survives through a mortal hit and transforms. By all means, Undyne is the underground's hero and is being uplifted by the story to match the human. Then by the time you fight Mettaton and watch him transform, it feels expected for the game to give you more strong bosses as your reward for your hard work. But Mettaton's moment is ripped away, and it truly feels wrong. It's as if you've become unnaturally powerful; even more powerful than the game itself. There's surely no more challenges ahead if not even the game can hold you back at this point... Right? Only because of this set-up, Sans becomes a force that's hard to measure.

Honestly the thing i love about the Sans fight is that unlike shitty fangames he is actually very skill based,good players can absolutely destroy and react to everything he does even while playing blind,honestly i think the Sans fight is a great base design for people who want to make good fangame fights but still keep it challenging. Just make things reactable but precise and easy to understand like the Sans fight and no matter what you add,unless it is simply put stupid,it will be fun play.

It's just to bad it overshadowed other to be quite frankly superior moment's in the game such as the scene where undyne transforms into undyne the undying the monster's in new home explaining the story of the dreemurs undynes neutral death and flowey explaining his origin and they made sans the main focus of everything overshadowing every other character
