Maddie, I think it will look great when it's all styled. A suggestion that I ended up doing in my sitting room when painting a bold colour, paint the skirting board in a darker green. It gives a bit more dimension and breaks up one flat colour! Would love the giveaway for a family get together :) @rosie_roams

As far as the repointing goes, as someone who has worked with historic stone, you need to make sure you get the right person who knows what they’re doing. DON’T EVER LET ANYONE PRESSURE WASH YOUR STONE. Find someone with certifications in preservation. I’m sure there are trade organizations that do that in the UK. They should remove the paint, give it a good clean with a quaternary ammonium based cleaner, and then use historically appropriate lime mortars and techniques. You’re right that the paint on the stone is causing major problems. You may also need to get the paint tested for lead, since it might be quite old, just to make sure it’s removed properly.

I’ve been researching repointing brick and stone for a project I am working on and I second OMGitsaClaire’s advice. Stone is porous, so you want it to be able to let water out, because no matter what you do, it will get wet. If you trap the water, it breaks down the mortar quicker and the stone when you have freezes. It also works it’s way into your house. So many modern products don’t work with traditional buildings. We build air tight now, which can totally rot or destroy a historic home when not done correctly or without thinking of the house as a whole system. Definitely there are a few options for historically trained stone masons in the UK, but their timelines may be booked months in advance. I think I would use whirly bird on the coving, and maybe a white or whirly bird main door to set it off, or even just add white to the green you are using. You’ve definitely inspired a tone on tone plan for the next bedroom I redecorate. But it is fun to have your guests stay in your very own “green” room.

Really good advice! Cornish granite is really special ~ something to do with the solidity and resilience...somehow very comforting :) Maybe in the Spring/ Summer it would be interesting to engage an architectural historian to give the house the 'once over' ~ to get some more insight into the design & construction and delve into its evolving history as a home.
@OMGitsaClaire2 жыл бұрын
@@glynnL You are correct. I’m trained in cemetery and gravestone conservation here in the US. Stone needs to breathe. It needs to be able to let moisture in and out and expand and contact with fluctuations in temperature which paint doesn’t let it do. And modern Portland cement type mortars can be harmful because they don’t bond to stone in the same ways and they are also harder than the stone in some cases which can cause problems. Proper guttering and repointing with a lime-based mortar (preferably mixed with locally sourced masonry sand) will give you the most authentic look while protecting your home. And then a good clean every 5-10 years with an approved biologic cleaner to kill off any moss, mildew, or algae should keep the stone in good shape.

I would definitely recommend running a dehumidifier in the area you are drying clothes, it is amazing the amount of water they suck out of the air. It really speeds up the drying time.

I love the green, it does look good, I am a bit unsure of coving and door being green but in my 51 years I came to a way of thinking a few years ago, it's your home if you love it keep it, I don't live in your home however I sure would love too as its beautiful ❤️ ♥️♥️♥️♥️

I would suggest vinegar and water to use on the mold. Because its a living thing you need to disrupt the cells and vinegar works awesome. Bleach won't do much to fully kill the mold like vinegar will

I totally think once you have furniture and decor in, you’ll know you made the right decision. It’s a lovely green, and I think it will look amazing on all the spots you painted it.

Love the green. I'll be honest, I find that each time I paint a room, I always find the ceiling--no matter how fine it seemed before--suddenly looks dingy and needs doing, too! Cool Yule, and thank you for taking me on your journey! Love from Buffalo, New York! 🏠🏠🎄🎄☃☃❄❄☕☕🎅🎅💖💖

I think once you get it another coat and maybe beautiful crisp white bedding.... and other soft touches ...it will be fabulous..like you said you can always paint it back white on the wood work... It good when you feel you need to continue...and see the end result. 👍😉

The December list sounds like a great plan - this is basically what I've done with my last two houses. It's worth it to hire a certified house inspector, who will give you a detailed list of the current condition of your house. This gives you a comprehensive list to work from, and you often can do the work as you can afford it. And somehow, when you have it all on paper, it's easier to prioritize things. Any roof or water intrusion issues always come first..... And to know a professional has given you the all clear on the expensive things is a real comfort when you get to the fun things, like wall colors and furnishings. Your instincts are good about the green color - to furnish the room and see what you think. As you already know, interior design of your own house is an ever evolving, gradual process. Have fun and have a lovely Christmas!

Keeping in mind what you said about not drying clothes upstairs, if you'd stil like to use this room occasionally in the cold season for drying the laundry, I'd recommend looking into getting a de-humidifier :)

You should keep the green but have one of those whitish flowery wallpapers on one of the walls! Then you’ll have the green of the walls matching the flower stems and the lighter colour of the background 🤩

Love the green! I think it elevates the room when the walls, doors and trim are the same colour ✨ I personally would have kept the windowsill white just so the light coming through the window has something to bounce off, but that’s just me, and I bet it’s gonna look fab when it’s done! 😍

Fantastic plan ahead and love the colour. This really is inspiring me to just get done painting the kitchen. Just need my baby girl to be a little older so I have more than a few minutes here and there and can just get cracking. I just have to laugh at the fact that you both can use short rollers for your fairly high ceilings. There is me midget with an extender pole and a step when we were painting our house 😂

I absolutely LOVE a green room, but maybe there's such a thing as too much green. I wouldn't have painted the doors or windowsill green, but if you can see yourself looking at it and loving it every day, then that's all that matters 🩷

Thinking about it I personally would want a designated area to hang the washing where it's not in the way of an actual living space. If I were you I'd take the chance in the utility reno to create a space for that. Where I live we also hang our washing outside in winter when it doesn't rain. At least my grandma used to do it. you might need to transfer the rack back inside sometimes, but nothing beats the freshness of laundry dried in winter air.

Great job on painting the room. Here in the states, we never paint the baseboards/skirting as you called them there the same color as the walls (or the crown molding.…the top one) … not sure if that is normal to do in England but I feel that it is better to accentuate those moldings keeping them white and not make them blend with the same color. The moldings, in my opinion, are special and should be showed off and not blended with the rest. But of course it is your home and you do as you wish. Love seeing your progress.

Better not spray anything directly onto the moldy area. A professional told me once, by doing that the spores might get pushed in the air before you can kill them. Better spray into a cloth and then wipe the area.

Love the colour you’ve picked! We had a little bit of damp/mould in our bedroom this winter (also live in an old house) and I actually found white vinegar did a really good job of getting rid of it, as apparently is kills some mould spores in porous materials but bleach can only do the surface, so would definitely recommend 😊

Just a note on killing mold. On a This Old House episode, an expert showed that bleach only bleaches out the color of the mold. So he used hydrogen peroxide to actually kill the mold. But I would recommend you get an expert's opinion on percentage and any other ingredients to use. I bought some non-oxygen bleach for my laundry and it is hydrogen peroxide. Also I have Invisalign braces; and I found that to clean them I use a small amount of hydrogen peroxide in water in a small dish and just drop them into the solution while I take the braces out to eat.
