i drove the north cascades pass the first time in 1974 and fell in love. it took until 2004 for me to find my place on the skagit river about a mile west of marblemount. i lived there until 2017, when i traded my home for vanlife. i now spend my summers near the pass and the park and retreat south until the pass opens in may. liberty bell mountain is to the right when you first get to the scenic overlook. the road below that runs below liberty bell down to the 4 lane switchback get between 50' to 100' plus of snow. the pass is usually snowed shut in late november. they try to keep it open to allow the hunters to get out. there are more avalanche zones per mile in the pass than anywhere else in the U.S. including colorado. my heart lingers here, thanks for the great video, it was truly beautiful, you should post that it is best viewed fullscreen or on huge tv if available. it's stunning here in my cargo trailer's 32" :)

Russ, I love how you stop at all the side of the road places, like the overlook. I would probably keep driving and look at what I would have missed. You’re giving me a whole new appreciation of how to do a road trip. I can see that your philosophy is truly that it is all about the journey and not just the destination. Thanks.

The North Cascades National Park - aka "American Alps". The highway closes to all vehicle traffic for the winter after the first snow (normally around early Nov) until the week before Memorial Holiday. It closes between Newhalem and Mazama (roughly speaking). When you stopped to look at the views at time2:56, the rock outcrop directly in front of you with the vertical white stains is the Washington Pass Overlook (for reference from the other side). This highway only sees "traffic" a few days per year. The rest of the time that the highway is open the traffic is as light as you depicted on this wonderful video. Thank you for the great work on your videos.

I’ve been waiting all day for this video. It looks like you’re going to be following my bike route all the way to Anacortes, which is where we ended. We deviated off of the main roads occasionally. Yes we have bears, cougars, bobcats, deer and elk, even in the small coastal town where I live. And Sasquatches. I’ve seen all those animals except a Sasquatch, although I may have heard one howl.

I love seeing my home state and all the places I have been. Wait till he gets to Diablo Dam and Ross Lake. So gorgeous. If you ever get a chance take the Stevens Pass it’s spectacular maybe even more so than Washington Pass. Hard to choose. This Pass is closed in the winter. I think I’m November. It’s a huge deal when it opens back up. Stevens Pass is usually open year round unless avalanches closes it. They do clear it. There is a ski resort on top Stevens Pass. It’s near Skykomish. Also a little bit of the Pacific Crest Trail follows the interstate.

10:00 Weird but the older I get, the less I can even look over the edge of life. Too scary. (I like your content. Mellow, paced, nice visuals.) A small hint. On the signs it would be great if you framed, focused, and froze the camera for a second so we out in KZbin land can pause and read them. Thanks.

Just beautiful! Something I always notice in the very northwest corner is the forests are denser than anywhere else. The branches of the pine trees are intertwined! Our campsite in Olympic Nat'l Park was 3 feet from the road, but we couldn't see it or hear traffic because the trees in that 3 ft were so tightly packed together! It seems like as you go west, the mountains and forests get prettier and prettier! 'Epic views' hits the nail right on the head!

The next time you find yourself here, take Hwy 20 to Hwy 9 at Sedro Woolley and head north up to Hwy 542 and then, head east to Mt. Baker. When you get to the visitor's center, continue up to Artist Point. I promise that you will not be disappointed by the view and neither will your drone.

@@schroedingersdog7965 The big challenge is to be there when it's not cloudy or overcast. Late July, August, and early September are good times to go, when it's most likely to be sunny and clear. I recommend going there in the mid-to-late morning and on a weekday so you won't have to deal with so many people.

G'day Russ. The US of A is such a vast and very scenic country. I just realised that you're not in the Rockies. The Cascades and The Sierra Nevadas are way west of the Rockies. As an Australian who's been all over the South West of the US, I"m still learning so much. Road School

I'm enjoying the Washington videos. I haven't been back for nearly a year to see my family who live in Whatcom and Skagit counties there on the coast. The fir trees are so beautiful and familiar. I lived there for over 20 years Does anyone else pause the video for the shots of the storyboards and historical markers to read them? He misses a few but they are interesting to read. I get up close to my big screen TV to read them. I get KZbin thru Roku on my TV. I'm anxious to see the next few videos of towns and scenery familiar to me that I can't go to right now.

That entire stretch of H 20 is closed in winter because of snow and avalanche potential. As far as I know we only have black bears up there at the pass, not grizzles, so not a problem. They eat berries not people. This one of my favorite trips in the state. Too bad you didn't stop in Winthrop and spend a little time there. Fun little town to wander around. Also spend some time at Seattle City light pwr facilities further down the road. Very interesting history.
