In April, I made a video on how to remove a stuck on washplate. Lots of people liked it, but its not a sure-fire technique for every washplate. In this video, I am showing you more ideas to remove the plate, preferably without as much damage to the plate as possible. In this video, we're dealing with the WORST PLATE EVER, and still manage to get it off.
Some of the things we used in the video to get the plate off that may help you:
Trampoline Spring Tool (2pk): amzn.to/38GX3PU
Milliard non-GMO Citric Acid, 5lb: amzn.to/2IEqHdq
A few things we deal with in this video are:
- How to remove a stuck on agitator
- How to remove a stuck on washplate
- How to remove a pulsator
- How to find a Whirlpool Washer Hub
- Replace a Whirlpool Wash Plate

In the center of the wash plate there’s metal that connects wash plate to the transmission splines. It’s completely seized. No idea what to do.

Try two pant can lid openers. Hook them under the edge of wash plate at 180 degrees apart. And jiggle back and forth. Spin drum a little to reposition lid openers and jiggle. Repeat until it comes off. It just worked for me pretty quickly after much frustration at trying several other methods unsuccessfully. This is the first time I have ever commented on KZbin. I'm really just a lurker. But I felt it was important to share this, seems it seems to work well. Maybe someone else already made this suggestion. I didn't take the time to look through all the multitudinous comments to see.

Well that was a disaster, just broke the lips off the lid opener so now they are just weird looking flat head screwdrivers and there are small pieces of metal stuck under the plate.... All in all I don't recommend doing this but it did sound like a good idea.

Your videos just saved me. What i did was bent two sic penny nails and fit them in the holes opposite each other, then I grabbed the nails with vice grips and wiggle it while pulling up. I did that 90 degrees apart a few times and it came loose. It's the metal spline insert on the wash plate and the metal splines on the shaft that rusts together. Thanks.

After watching all the videos and reading all of the comments, here is what FINALLY worked for me to remove my washer plate.. After removing the cap and retaining bolt for the washer plate, my plate was stuck. I tried: WD-40 Vinegar Bent coat hangers to pull with. 2 Small Allen wrenches and 2 vice grips to pull with. Deadblow hammer 3lb sledge (the handle is now 8"!) 6” punch to fit on top of the shaft to beat on! Hair dryer to heat up the metal insert on the washer plate. Finally, I tried CRC Freeze penetrant to freeze the metal insert on the washer plate. After spraying 4 20 second bursts and waiting 20 minutes, some more hammering and it came off!! Great product- got it at the local auto store. I can now complete my gearcase replacement! Thanks for the video and all of the ideas in the comments. P.S. I will be using some anti-seize on the spline of the new gearcase! In retrospect, a propane torch might have helped break the corrosion.

I came across this the other day and was about to just cut it off since I had the new one but I used a steam cleaner. I just put the tip of the steamer on the center of the wash plate where the nut was and put a towel over it for a few minutes and then put 2 45 degree angle pick tools under both sides and it rocked out. that saved me so much time.

GOT IT, I found a solution. Fit a long wire underneath the wash plate and wrap the opposite ends around a long piece of lumber laid horizontally across the opening over the washer. The longer the better, I used a 6ft piece. Push up on one side of it with your shoulder using leverage to pry it off. The amount of force I had to use lifted the washer from one side, meaning there was no chance in hell I would’ve gotten it off with my hands alone even given the right tools. Leverage is the only way.
@lovethevdub
@lovethevdub Жыл бұрын
Good solution - I did the same except that I used paracord under the washplate and tied to the end of a stick. I used the edge of the washer as the fulcrum, pushing DOWN on the stick. While holding this tension, I banged on the washplate near the center with a rubber mallet and POP! It came off, revealing a big nasty tangle of hair around the shaft that was causing trouble.

21 October 2021 I honestly gottah say thank you to your video and comments that were allowed. Because one of the comments recommended "WD-40". I guess my husband and I was in a rush after the technician said "I am unable to remove the washer plate because no matter what I try it won't come off unless I break it, now with that said I can order a new washer plate and come back next week to change it out". Well guys and all that watch this video and other videos, BE PATIENT AND WD-40 the area in the middle where you removed the washer plate bolt. This video does help because we lifted the barrel as well and tried to lift the plate and then just continued to use the WD-40. We waited a little more later and just gave the WD-40 some time. Few hours later just a tug here and there the washer plate came off. Oh my gosh it was nasty as heck so no wonder it didn't want to come off, lol. So nasty and coins galore in the drainage areas, all the drainage areas had coins. Don't know when the last time this washer was maintained but some coins were stuck together and really stuck. But hey all worked out and technician comes next week with a new washer plate soooooo we might as well have that changed out come next week because it's paid for. Just want to close by saying thanks again for this video and for the comments area because it helped us. Mahalo nui from Wai'anae Hawai'i. Cheehu!!!!

I've used the method below to remove pulleys, etc. from shafts. I would try it for washplate removal, but I'm not certain that it will work. I After removing the nut, try replacing it with a coupling nut run all of the way down and then loosen about two turns or so. Then screw in a short bolt into the coupling nut and tighten it securely to the top of the stud. Spray the washplate stud with WD40 and tap the bolt with a hammer. I believe that it will pop loose after a few light blows. If this doesn't work, try prying the plate and tapping the bolt at the same time.

@@alyssatrout3702 I'm afraid I don't remember anymore but you can follow the basic idea of the video. Have that citric acid in the tub with hot water and run wash cycles to make the agitator spin around. It may take a few times but as it spins to "wash" the empty tub it'll slowly work itself off and float up to the water level. Just make sure to babysit it so it doesn't bang the plate around once it's off.

Honestly, the best thing to do is get some air wedges, a t-hook and some penetrating oil like pb blaster. Remove the bolt and spray the penetrating oil in the cavity where the bolt sits. May need to do a few times and let it soak down. Then use the t-hook to pull the agitator up while fitting the wedge underneath. Put the bolt back on loosely and then pump up the air wedges. That will take it right off. Using penetrating oil is not ideal, but sometimes you just have to. You can always use some carb or brake cleaner to get it off. And as for the smell, you may just need to run it a few times with some detergent and bleach to get the smell out. Not ideal, but its better than spending all day to get no where.

The only success I've had on the newer whirlpool/maytag designs is spraying PBlaster directly in the center where the metal insert and transmission driveshaft are located. Sometimes it has to sit and when I come back to replace the hub the washplate will then come off. Other times I have to break the plastic washplate and bring a replacement with me.

I used PB Blaster as well. I had to let it soak in overnight while using a rubber mallet to bang and vibrate the wash plate and using picks (hook and pick tools) to lift up on the wash plate. Jut when you think you need to start smashing the plastic to get it off... pop! Up comes the wash plate/agitator. You need to give the PB Blaster time to work AND you need to keep working the PB Blaster in. While the drive plate is plastic, the wash plate and drive shaft are metal and are what get rusted/fused together -- at least in my case.

I used my oscillating tool with a wood cutting blade. Completely destroyed the wash plate, but I got it out. I had tried a variation of the trampoline tool without success. I was trying to figure out how to use a gear puller, but decided that I needed to order a new wash plate just in case. The gear puller broke the stuck wash plate, and that signaled the start of the oscillating tool attempt. It strikes me that it might not be a bad idea to remove the wash plate every six months just to keep the crud from building up beneath it.

Based on my washer symptoms it appeared that I just needed to a new drive hub so should have been a simple repair but nothing is ever easy. I tried just about all of the solutions in this video and others (metal hooks, citric acid, degreaser, air bags, shims, prying tools, hair dryer, etc.) to get the wash plate off intact but despite putting tremendous upward pressure, nothing worked. Decided to cut away plastic to access the metal part of the agitator that sits on the spline. Use a rotary tool and then a chisel to get the plastic off the metal piece. Then tried all the suggestions (boiling water, lubricant, bearing pullers, etc) to get the metal piece off and none of that worked as well. Then decided to use a rotary tool with a diamond blade to cut a slot in the metal to see if I could loosen it. This was not easy as well but after 3-4 hours of cutting, finally got a slot cut on the top and one side that went all the way to the motor shaft/spline. Then used a hammer claw with a small piece of wood underneath to protect the bottom of the drum. This finally did the trick and it came off. There was some rust on the shaft but it didn't appear to be fused so it was just on there really, really tight. Then removed the old drive hub and all the gears were stripped so replaced it with the $10 part from amazon and washer appears to be working normally. Probably ended up spending $100 in supplies but way too much time. In the end it would have been way easier just to buy a new washer but it became a challenge that I had to solve. Hopefully this fixes it for a while but who knows. Thanks to everyone for the videos and comments.

My pulsator/washplate is significantly stuck to the drive shaft!!! Can I use WD-40 or olive oil or similar to get it loose? I've tapped and pried... Obviously, I don't want to introduce clothes staining, but cannot get it out (without damaging the pulsator, I fear).

Tried removing the plate off a relatively new washer with the same tools already.. tried once more gave up and just started pushing back and forth downwards on the plate to loosen it as much as I could then took that 90 degree spike tool and just hammered it into the center plastic arbor on the plate with a mallet one pull upwards and it came right out. Wouldnt bother with the citric acid its the metal splines that are grabbing so well on the center arbor.

Ben, I have a Daewoo 6kg "fuzzy logic" DWF-6010AP portable washer that I can't find any information on and is now making this electrical sounding buzz as soon as it is turned on. Like the sound of flourescent lights when they buzz. Machine is still working, but I do have to clear the filter on the bottom often and the lint trap inside has a tear in it and not collecting lint. I'm going to take that out and sew it up. Not sure if opening the agitator will help me clean it out... In the meantime, this buzzing sound, could there be lint trapped inside? It made this sound one other time, but when I unplugged the machine, it stopped and when I turned it back on, it was fine. Now it made that sound through the whole cycle tonight and no matter how many times I've unplugged, it's still making the noise when I turn the machine back on.. even when it's not running a cycle. In the spin cycle, the sound had waves of louder and quieter. Now I don't know what I'm doing here and am on a too-low fixed income so I have no money for parts or replacement washer. If I can't fix this myself, I will have to wash my clothes by hand and I have fibromayalgia, so this won't be possible. Please help me if you can!

Sounds like the drain pump is going bad. Pumps tend to get very loud over time if they have obstructions in them, and you said the filter needs cleaned a lot. It could damage it, causing the noise.

@@bensappliancesandjunk any time there is any kind of lint or anything in the filter, it won't rinse properly. So I take it out, clean it and then have to start the whole wash again to get the spin going again. This buzz sound is new. Sounds like an old fluorescent light tube, you know when they buzz and it kind of sounds electrical? This is a portable top load washer. Do I need to take it apart from the bottom or can I remove the back? I had tried to remove the back once before, years ago, but it wouldn't come off as the way it it connected, I'd have to remove the top and I don't know what I'm doing here, but I'm sure there must be a trick to it. Could the pump drain just be cleaned out? Or replaced?

I needed to replace the bearing and to do that, you have to remove the basket. I did everything including air impact hammer. At last every thing was destroyed including the transmission and the basket was stuck to the plastic tub with the outer pipe cylinder that houses the shaft of the transmission. The shaft as it got pounced on broke loose and the gearbox fell apart all at the same time. The tub and the basket was fused together with that gearbox cyclinder that the shaft is inside. After that, there was no need to chisel the cylinder away which I did but then it was time to chuck the whole thing. In fact this is on two units. One Maytag and the other Whirlpool. Same product, different name. Both courtesy of washplate. This does not happen with agitator set up.
@bensappliancesandjunk

Sadly, I've had that happen once or twice on the Whirlpool-built washplates. Such a terrible design.
@alchemy1
@alchemy1 3 жыл бұрын
@@bensappliancesandjunk Well, here is something that is worthy to include here. So here it is. First of all, I don't believe in purchasing their so-called "gearbox" when their bearing goes out due to that leaking seal above it. Instead o replace the bearing, which is a common bearing (thank heaven they somehow forgot to specialize that bearing).. I simply drill out the rivets on the pan/box that house their little can transmission/gear thing that is sandwiched inside the two metal pan. I spray some lubricant on the bearing collar and let it sit and remove the two half and there you pound out,, whatever it takes to remove the bearing. Typically it is the top bearing that goes out and not bottom. If the bottom also goes out, thank heaven you don't have to remove it because it will be tough. Since it is in bottom, no water gets there to rust out the ball bearings. So I take the cover off the bearing, spray some carb cleaner and blow it clean with air. It is dirt and grime that gets in there. So that is the solution for the two bearings. Now the solution for removing the frozen stuck basket. Here it is. Put a scissor jack or a bottle jack right on the shaft and cut a piece of 2X4 about 20 inches long and place it on top of the jack. The two ends of the 2x4 will be right under the edges of the basket. Raise the jack and watch the basket give. Merry Christmas. ( By the way extra details. If you are that ambitious to replace the bearing instead of the gearbox when you spray the bearing, you have to let it sit possibly overnight if they are extra stubborn. Now let us assume that either you don't want to wait that long or even after that the two halves are hard to split open to expose the bearing. In that case, this is the solution. Save either the gearbox or the pan but not both. To save the gearbox, simply cut the top half collar where inside is the bearing and you are done. Or destroy the gearbox by pounding on it but you are saving the pan. In the future same problem, you simply do the opposite, exchange the pan of one with the other gearbox that you installed new bearing. This is the least aggravating but it is forgotten and waiting for the thing game. Oh, with the agitator getting backed on, although I have not had a serious issue with that, I simply spray it with some lube and let it sit and twist and turn it, etc until it has some give. Then I feed strong twine by shoving it through the edges of the agitator feeding it inside all the way until it is at the center on the shaft ( possibly doubling the twine). Then grab both ends of the twin with your hands and the twin leaning towards you and again the shaft, using the shaft so hold the twin in place so the twine doesn't slip off and then with one strong jerking motion, left up the agitator))

Some times they're rusted on terribly. Sometimes it takes multiple doses of WD40 then hitting it with an impact... If you can't get it off ever, then the only other answer tends to be cutting the plate off with a rotary tool.

I could not get the nut off with a socket wrench either, muscle power was not the issue since I had power. Then I hired a repair guy, instead of trying to turn the wrench (continuously), he hit one end of the wrench (it was the same socket wrench I used but failed), the sudden impact of force made the wrench move the nut. But my wash plate was so dann stuck, even this bulky and strong repair guy could not get the plate out after he removed the nut, he damaged the plate when trying to lift it with a screw driver

this method of removing the wash plate is all fine and dandy if you have a lot of time to spare, but in the real world, a technician has up to 10 calls to run in a day and spending as little time at each call is very important if you want to make money that day. If you are replacing a transmission in that particular washer you're repairing, you may as well order a new wash plate and have it handy knowing you're going to have problems removing the old one. on jobs with a contract/warranty work, this is not a problem at all, the contract company pays for all parts. on all other calls, it's not really a problem either, because the wash plate is a relatively in-expensive part to replace anyways. I have had troubles removing the wash plate and once I had to actually use a Dremel to cut off the plastic and notch the metal part of the plate and then using a chisel to split it as rust and corrosion made it impossible to remove it normally. I suppose the citric acid would have worked but waiting around for several hours was not an option.
