I discuss a fantasy book related to fountain pens!

Another interesting review, and kudos for picking out the nuance of the Brexit/Scotland issue - we never expect US residents to have much awareness of international affairs.

Lately, US politics has been very distracting! But I did find the distinction about the views on Brexit in various parts of the UK interesting. It reminded me of how similar distinctions play out here in various regions.

I just got a book entitled "A Livy Reader". It is passages from the Roman historian Livy. The book has notes and a vocabulary in the back. Livy is kind of hard to read as are all the Roman historians.Bur Livy also does some beautiful writing and actually wrote speeches for the historical characters. Also bought 6 or 7 other books on the internet.

I haven't heard of Livy. I'll have to check him out!

@@WaskiSquirrel Tacitus is even more fun as he told a lot of the dirt about the first few Roman emperors. Also Suetonius. Suetonius wrote the Lives of the Twelve Caesars.

I think your book reviews will keep your real pen fans (like me) and will catch the eye of a good number of other people. For example, "The Walking Death" has many fans (I don't know the differences between the tv series from the book) so if you can identify the psychology maybe, behind why people find it so interesting and adapt it into your review, the potential followers may be bigger than the pens. I know everything needs a process and time, but I see a good future in here (my concern is you'll have more work). Looking forward more book reviews, always interesting. Hope you've a nice time there and safe back home! Thank you!

The trip is going well so far except for some minor car trouble this morning. The mechanic reminded me that my car is 21 years old, and the trouble was due to that. What I like about the book reviews is that I don't need to do much camera work or editing like the pen videos. I have to plan more, though not as much as when I do a driving video.

It sounds like a fun bubble gum for the brain summer read. I just downloaded the ebook from the NY Public Library.

Good for you! Yes, not to be taken seriously, but it is fun.

Thanks for doing these for all. However, lol, I checked out on this one at the hobgoblin followed by the juvenile naming humor. Ha,ha, now I have more time to refine the 4th revision of my comment to last weeks PiU.

Comments to my videos don't need that much revision! But, yes, very juvenile humor in his writing.

I have just watched the remainder of your video. Unknown about whether the author is a fountain pen geek. I will write to him.

On his website, he did list fountain pens as one of his interests. I think I missed it before.

You may be interested in books by Tom Dietz. Kind of late teens stuff, as to the main characters, generally, but he mixes the Irish/Gaelic elvish (Tuatha de Danaan) and Cherokee mythology. Definitely a 1980s vibe, they're out of print, but I enjoyed most of them in college. I'm currently reading a book from the late 1950s (science fiction), an HG Wells one from 1909, and rereading Tacitus. This book sounds like a bit of fluffy, lighter reading, the kind I use to just shut down my brain,😁 so I may have to look for a copy. The SERRAted Edge series, again later 1980s-90s sounds like a similar vibe, but with elves in NASCAR type racing. Definitely a product of the time. 😉 Definitely hits abuse and neglect, and touches on human trafficking. Though those are more of a tangential plot than the main ones. Think Marion Zimmer Bradley was a part of that series... Thanks for sharing this. Another one to look into. 👍

That is interesting about the Irish/Gaelic mythology. Kevin Hearne's "Iron Druid" series borrows heavily from the same mythology. They were the goddesses I mentioned him having sex with. Yes, definitely fluffy reading!

@@WaskiSquirrel Being a reasonable amount of Celt, myself, I found it interesting. Got me to get the Mabignogian, "The Secret Life of Elves, Fauns and Fairies" (written by a Scottish Presbyterian minister in the 1600s, that I got as a one off printing) and Mooney's books on Cherokee life and mythology. Mooney is a pretty dry read, but I read Gibbons' "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" when I was 14 (all 6 volumes!) so I'm pretty used to dry... 😁

Iron Druid Chronicles is one of my favorite modern fantasy series even though later in the series Granule gets pretty damn annoying.

I felt a little guilty thinking that about her, but you're right. She wasn't wrong though in her assessment of Atticus at the end. He created a lot of his trouble for himself.

This sounds like a Neil Gaiman book. The immediate book that comes to mind is American Gods. The book is better than the series.

I've only read one Neil Gaiman book: Bad Omens. I think I need to read more. My return trip takes me through Bismarck, so I may be in trouble... But I do think American Gods is on my bookshelf. I think I bought it as a double book with Anansi Boys. Maybe I have my next two books to read when I get home!
