Properly preload setting is essential for all turbos. By adjusting the actuator to find the crank pressure point. The best tool to find the Crank pressure point is to connect a hand pump vacuum/pressure like a Mityvac mv8255 to the wastegate. Adjust the actuator. Pump until the rode start to move. The pump will show the pressure in PSI or bar. For most turbo 7-8psi or 0,8bar is okay. In combination with a Bi directional scan tool f.i. Autophix Es910 for BMW and Mini or Forscan for Ford you will manage to adjust the turbo properly. Good luck.

For the most part yes, but adjusting this is mostly for proper preload setting as described in the video. You don't want to have it set too loose otherwise you may not maintain proper boost as the wastegate flap can bleed off too much exhaust pressure. Tightening the preload even further can increase boost but that's dependent on the wastegate itself and the vehicles ECU and it's ability to regulate boost values.

Increasing the preload usually increases boost and reducing the preload can lower boost (to a certain extent). Keep in mind not all turbos allow adjustment in this location.

My question is don’t you also adjust voltage? I’m working on a 2013 Kia Optima . It calls for a voltage range between 3.9 to 4.1 volts at the actuator for proper boost. Never mind. The actuator on the Kia is electronic and this one seems to be a vacuum or spring type actuator.

The base psi is dependent on the wastegate actuator spring, it can vary greatly. The universal preload is ~3 turns or about 3mm. However this can vary if you want to try increasing or decreasing your boost on your own setup. Usually a small increase can be made by increasing your preload. I suggest trying it if your system allows adjustment and see what works for you.

Usually the door will slowly open until the desired boost pressure is maintained. This question is hard to answer because it amount the door/valve opens is dependent on many variables. Usually if your testing it on a bench with a pressure gauge it will not open 100% at the set boost pressure, it's usually partially open.
@vikenk
@vikenk 11 жыл бұрын
Yes up to a certain point. For instance I have tried 2 turns all the way up to 6 turns of preload. After a certain point of increasing preload you may not see a change in boost pressure as the spring is controlling that. Best thing is to simply set it at 3 turns to start and try adjusting it later to see if there is any change. So yes the cracking pressure can be increased, resulting in quicker boost ramping.

@Draslay31 Not all cars come equipped with an adjustable wastegate actuator. Adjusting a stock turbo setup can be more difficult because the ECU can ultimetly control your boost as well as the actuator. If your setup is adjustable you can try adjusting it but your already running a lot of boost so I'm not sure it's worth it in your case.

All turbos come adjusted from the manufacturer. To adjust preload u need to apply the right amount of pressure (idle) to the actuator then adjust the arm until it does not fit to the right side and then turn it back until it fits so that the arm is touching on the inside right side of the arm that is for GM turbos, for Daimler it has to be on the left side, but even so tempering with the preload might damage your car so DON'T. The measurements are really precise. I work for Garrett :P i know

Depending on how stiff your wastegate spring pressure is it can be difficult to pull the arm out. Try using a small prybar/screwdriver to pull the arm out if you can't do it by hand, just be careful not to damage anything.

Usually if you have an adjustable actuator you (may) be able to increase your boost level slightly, but its' also dependent on your ecu program and how much adjustability it allows.

Mostly for any aftermarket turbo which uses an internal wastegate setup. However this can work on some stock cars which are equipped with a turbo from the factory as long as there is an adjustable portion on the wastegate.

You can't typically lower the boost pressure of an actuator by loosening the preload, you can typically only increase the pressure. In your situation you need to purchase an aftermarket wastegate actuator which already has a lower spring pressure.

Hi Vikenk Great Video thank you, I have a question. I'm upgrading a TD04HL 15t to a 19t, the 19t can pull around 500cfm. I'm looking at setting it up for 18-20 psi (to start with). I'm undecided what actuator to use 1.2 bar ( 16.2psi-20.6psi ) or 1.5 bar ( 20.6psi-25psi ) I am doing a full intercooler upgrade and air box, what would you recommend and also the 3 turn preload is that a standard setting on any wastegate/actuator setup?

Yes this is also for a good used actuator as well. However not all actuators have the same preload settings but some preload is typically required. I’d research your application before adjusting it but you might benefit from an adjustment regardless.

I have an internal wastegate that I'd like to lower the pressure is opens at. It does NOT have an adjustable arm. From what I understand, the spring in this w/g is set to open at 8psi. If I wanted say, 5psi, could I cut the arm, thread it so that I could adjust it an then adjust it that way? If possible, I guess instead of turning the arm the way you did in the vid, I'd go the other way? No traction in 1st and 2nd and was hoping for an easy fix. I have an mbc to ramp higher (10psi) in 3rd gear.
@vikenk

It may be possible but usually this won't help out actual turbo response to much but rather can help increase boost overall. First you need to check and see if your wastegate actuator rod is adjustable, most OEM systems are not.

Rini Sugiarto If you leave the arm loose then normally it wont make any boost or very light boost (which is not how it should be set). Your actuator may not be able to suport more boost because of the design or spring rate, not sure on your model vehicle as i don't even know what this is on, my video only shows general adjustment guides. I suggest leaving it at the proper adjustment.

I was wondering if you could help me, im putting a turbo froma a diesel inline 6 that created 20 psi, but im putting it on to a carborated v8 and only want around 6 psi. could i do that by extending the rod. or should i go to an external wastegate?

That probably be too big of a down adjustment. You can get actuators with lighter spring to give you a lower psi base to go off (they usually have their range in the specs). The problem running external wastegates on turbo's built with internal wastegate, is you will need to have the internal wastegate welded shut so the external wastegate can function properly! LOL just realise your comment is 12 years old, but maybe I still help someone in the future😊
