People are going to say that this ain't the time or the place to call Dustin Hoffman out, but if this isn't the time or the place, when or where is? If he isn't going to be called out publicly, especially a film panel where he can't escape to a publicist to write his statements for him, what other good place to hold an honest conversation is there? I get it that people are going to think it's unprofessional of john to do this, but personally I think that something like this is necessary to invoke change, as polarizing as it might be. Love ya, John.

I would say the 'reason' is that no one would listen to her. I'm sure she's been telling her close friends and relatives about the incident for years, but never brought it up to the press because they didn't really care about 'sexual harassment in the workplace' until recently. Now that these victims are being listened to, it's no wonder why they are all coming out.

You're saying harassment is par for the course with acting? As a director you just made me throw up in my mouth a little bit. Its our duty to make sure that there is none of that on set. Its just indicative that there wasn't proper oversight on their production. Even with a sexual scenes like those in the graduate, you only move forward if you've had extensive talks with all those involved to make sure everyone is on the same page, they set proper boundaries, and it ends when the scene ends. If boundaries are violated, or if the behavior is not merited by the scene/ happens offstage, that actor should either be reprimanded harshly, or if severe, ejected from the production if not more. the fact that Hoffman is angry that Oliver even brought it up shows the kind of residual culture we need to fight against to bring this evil out into the open. Just cause evil existed in the past without recourse doesn't mean we should repeat the sins of our fathers. We are the ones who's duty it is to change this world for the better.

He's "standing up" for absolutely nothing. He's virtue signaling, and little more. If you looked inside of most people's closets in Hollywood, you're likely to find the same skeletons. John Oliver included. But, it's good to know that all it takes is an allegation to condemn a person. Why not do away with allegations and evidence completely and just presume guilt? Well, someone SAID SO! And, that's good enough for me! Right? There are a sea of opportunistic liars out there. An ocean of them. And, they do a disservice to actual people who've legitimately experienced an actual, physical assault. But, in any event, an allegation is not something to virtue signal over.

I confess when I first saw this, as someone who hates confrontation, I felt squeamish, to watch Oliver to call out Dustin with no warning in front of people like that, over something that happened 40 years ago. But I didnt know the details, and when I read the article in the Hollywood Reporter, complete with written evidence from 1985, Im very proud of Oliver for this. He's right that saying, "its not reflective of who I am" is a cop-out and not reflecting of the time. It may well be that by 2017 a man like Hoffman has learned and matured and wouldn't pull that stuff today, but he's got to own it. They all do. They can't just say "this was 40 years ago". They have to say "I was raised to think that this sort of behaviour was OK, it's what I saw all the men I looked up to doing, and I'm sorry for the hurt I caused because I was a total sexist, predatory dick, and while at the time I didnt't htink it made me a bad guy, on reflection I now see I was part of the problem. I've growna nd changed since then and I'm sorry". that's what needs to be said. So good for Oliver. The only caveat I would add to that, though, isthat I didnt like Oliver's answer of "I believe her because she had no reason to lie." That's not always true. If someone has an accusation with no proof 40 years later, we dont know the reasons. But the fact that the woman has documented proof from the 1980s, that's why we believe her, because she would have to be a compulsive weirdo to write her sisters those made up stories at the time.
@whaddup5417
@whaddup5417 3 жыл бұрын
It was actually the right move to NOT acknowledge that evidence at first imo because you shouldnt need it. He wasn’t bringing this up just to bury Hoffman, he was making a broader point. Plenty of accusations get made without such convenient evidence and people’s knee jerk response is “she wants attention” which is just ignorant and unfair. That person KNOWS that’s going to be the response, that there will be recourse, which is why most women stay silent. I understand it’s a difficult leap for ppl just to put that faith in a random person but the thing is it shouldn’t have to destroy a persons career in Hoffman’s case. The proper apology would do just fine, you just have to be willing to own up to it.

At 5:50 "We're trying to break up the tension of shooting for 16 hours a day." That's not an excuse. He wanted to break up the tension and his first thought is making a sex related comment/joke. That is what makes you're a creep. Normal people don't have to resort to the topic of "sex" to be funny, especially in your place of employment. If I did something like that at my work, no matter how well I knew my coworkers, someone could take it the wrong way. What makes the sexual harassment worse is if sex is your default go to topic of choice. As far as this being an example of something that happened 40 years ago it is OK to admit "with that time AND group of people it was socially acceptable" but reflecting on it now he should have no fear saying "it is inappropriate by today's standards." To include the word "if" in that apology leaves everyone believing he is denying it ever happened and that denial is what hurts the most. He may not feel like it from his point of view but it damages the accusers integrity if you leave it open for denial of history. Nothing can be fixed if we can't agree on the true historical facts first. Solution: Acknowledge what happened without any room for doubt and always strive to be better than the inappropriate society standards of the past.

Furthermore you had 0 out of 3 Dr.Freud, i don't "defend sexual abusers" when there is an EVIDENCE. Same goes for any kind of crime. There is no crime without a body. With your logic ANYBODY could acuse ANYBODY, ic ould acuse you and you me, even though we never met. Don't you realize Einstein where this would lead ? The only thing thak make me feel "fragile" and "sad" is that i have to share the same planet with knuckleheads like you. I bet my left testicle that you didn;t had more than 10-15 women in your life, you know shit about the female psychology and manipulation ability. Good to see this stuff brought out of the darkness, so as a society (or more correctly as males) we can finally realize the damage we can do by our actions. "You're a predator. I am superior." No one cares about the middle-aged female Swedish social workers raping the migrant boys in horrifying numbers. Hmm, I wonder why. John Oliver is the kind of straight guy who would still get invited to Girls' Night because we just feel comfortable around him and respected. Women do love having male friends, but we often stick to gay dudes because we've been burned so many times by men we thought were our friends. Girls' night in the end was created for us to have a social situation where we feel safe, and can be honest. I've had straight male friends invited to my gal pal nights who were just so non-creepy and it was nice having a mix. We need more dudes like that. John Oliver just seems like the type of dude who would do face masks with the gals, and also punch out a dude if he grabbed your crotch in the bar.

I understand the way he acted; if he tried to assist Hoffman it would be seen as supporting someone accused of sexual assault, but if he said anything supporting Oliver it might seem like Hoffman is being ganged up on, which wouldn't be good for Oliver since he's trying to make this a dialog where Hoffman can address everything in a mostly civil environment. For the record, any apology that begins with "If I offended anyone" is not an apology at all. Hoffman is right that that one little word makes all the difference. If you can't even take their word that they felt offended, then simply don't try to apologize.

I feel like one can learn a lot from John Oliver about how to have a nuanced conversation. He always gives credit where credit is due and admits his own shortcomings in his view, all while still delivering very powerful truths and opinions of his own. Like that is how you genuinely have a conversation with someone you disgree with, not to mention letting the other person speak and utterly destroy themselves with their own words. Hoffman has to realize he's using the exact same tired old excuses every one else does? He's even going down the list "it was 40 years ago, it was a different time; she didnt bring it up for 40 years; i didnt even know she was 17; we were all comfortable with each other and i assumed" etc. I mean even if any of that was completely true--which i would find generous--it all comes down to one thing: It's an explanation, NOT an excuse!

now i don't know the whole story (this is the first i'm hearing of it) so i'm not saying Dustin Hoffman is guilty or not, but i would like to ask a question on these types of situations as a whole, rather than focus on this one case. I'm just curious on how one gives evidence that something didn't happen? certainly this mentality _is_ fantastic when it comes to dealing with guilty people, because they need to be held accountable and punished. however, what happens when we entertain the possibility that someone innocent may be accused one day? i feel sorry for the person who has to provide evidence that something didn't happen, especially if the false incident is said to have happened many years ago.
@beckgh7270
@beckgh7270 4 жыл бұрын
i would say it’s less about the accused having specific proof that it didn’t happen and more about evaluating the testimony of the victim. when people say there’s no evidence in sexual harassment or assault cases, they’re ignoring the very real, admissible testimonial evidence. if someone tells the story of the assault or harassment several times and it remains relatively consistent, you can reasonably conclude its validity. confirmation from others that the victim told them the same story previously also helps to prove that it happened. in this case, hoffman not only couldn’t deny it, he basically confirmed exactly what he was accused of by saying he touched her in a way she was upset by. not to mention the victim having written accounts from around the time of the assault. you can’t prove a negative, but not considering testimony to be evidence just isn’t correct, in the courts or by a moral standard

This is not a defense of Hoffman, but what irks me about videos like this is that there is no possible way to conduct this kind of interview (if you can even call it that) in good faith. I appreciate and sympathize with John's feeling that as an interviewer he has a responsibility to bring up these allegations (especially when at the time they were freshly published), but what exactly does he expect in response? Is he even interested in hearing Hoffman's answer at all, or is the whole thing just a performative exercise in castigating another individual in public? It doesn't seem like the moves John makes as an interviewer here serve any true purpose other than making the other person squirm. And sure, they may deserve it, but as a moderator of a panel event with a stated topic, he's essentially hijacked the entire event by taking it in this direction, at the expense of the other guests (who did nothing wrong and are simply here to discuss their work).

A different zeitgeist flows through the veins of Oliver; and frankly, I enjoy watching it. People who grew up in the "60's" are indeed in danger of believing in an ideal sensualism i.e. to always be thinking about what they feel and what their needs are, rather than respecting the basic rights of other's. Their brain is trained to be dissociative and idealistic, hence, Oliver's criticism of Hoffman is to get him to start thinking about the other person - evidently noticing that Hoffman is a) overly sure that he doesn't ever do bad things - and in the CONTEXT of HOLLYWOOD, that's profoundly unlikely; and secondly, he's flying to his own defense - not thinking about how the other party was made to feel by his actions.
