How long did you wait, let the white cure before applying the clear topcoat?

Great video! Shows honest work. We can't win them all. I do think it could be salvaged. It's not as catastrophic as you may have thought initially. The guitar is still in the right hands!

i like it. Stick the hardware on, it will look fine.

Watched your videos years ago but only recently seen that you are back. Amazing! Love watching your videos, it’s always entertaining and I watch them while working on my guitars as well. I’ve seen you got into watches? I got into watches lately too! What are you wearing? Love the double wristing with the Apple Watch haha

I like that its more yellow in certain spots. Looks more natural to me that way.

I would set it aside and come back to it when enough time has passed that starting over is not mentally exhausting. Alternatively, this could be an opportunity to get weird and do some experimenting with colors and layers.

Been right where you are my friend, I've had some refinish jobs fight me all the way like this one did too. The good thing is you can wash the paint off with lacquer thinner and start over. I have gone the relic route as well, sometimes it's actually the right thing to do and some of those have looked amazing in the end. Snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.

Dude, it looks fine. A lot of white guitars fade naturally to that very look. I actually love when old les paul studios take this look on. Keep it going brother.

I like the vintage look. I also heard that you have to pre-warm the spray cans of Nitro as it will give an even finish. Just fill a pan with hot water and let the can stay in it until you're ready to paint. Is the antique nitro supposed to have a yellowing effect?

That guitar isn’t destroyed, now that winter is here, I would leave that guitar in the car overnight, bringing it inside a toasty house in the morning., repeat a few times?, until you get the finish checking results you want., the only hardware I would age is the bridge,tailpiece, and pickup covers. .0000 steel wool and possibly a 50-50 mix of vinegar and water will age the chrome nicely, I would leave the tuners and everything else to age naturally., hey it didn’t turn out like you wanted it to, but it looks really cool as it is, don’t relic it, just get the finish checking. Second edit- aged lacquer, that’s why it yellowed, personally, I think it’s really cool, and I would go for the checking.

Bummer, I'd paint over the whole thing with a solid color like olive drab (which I prefer to white anyway)
@WoodesosGuitarMods Жыл бұрын
I did consider that. It's not out of the question by any means. My first thought was Pelham blue.

Oh man, that really sucks. I’d strip it down and start over. Of course that’s easier said then done. It will probably turn out to be one your best. It’s just making you work for it. Good luck.

I literally want to do this but Pelham blue. Someone said to me to use acetone for the finish removal ?? By the way my Gibson SG does look like this now (10 year old, loads of checking, aged naturally etc) but the finish does look like this and all the hardware is chrome so looks new lol

Contamination in one of the layers of paint. I just didn't clean it well enough and that was enough to set off a chain reaction of fish eyes and bubbling paint. And the more I touched it, the worse I made it. Nitro is unforgiving if you don't really know what you're doing and don't rigidly stick to the process. It will turn around and bite you in the ass really really fast. Poly paint is so forgiving, you could teach a 5 year old to get a good finish with it.
@Briman24 Жыл бұрын
@WoodesosGuitarMods good to know thanks! I have only painted 2 guitars and they went very well so i presume i used poly lol
@raoulduke8382 Жыл бұрын
I was wondering the same thing, because it wasn’t really explained at all in the video. It seemed more like it was maybe a bad reaction between the paint and the nitro? I’m not sure how the entire guitar was contaminated? I could see a section maybe, but the entire guitar? Seemed more like a chemical incompatibility to my eyes. But I could be mistaken.
@hkguitar198411 ай бұрын
@@raoulduke8382 I believe the problem of contamination is due to the fact he didn't strip the guitar down to the bare wood. Nitro Lacquer will melt and adhere to previous layers of lacquer (it is one of the advantages of using lacquer). He didn't follow the established process for applying nitro lacquer (there are no shortcuts).

Dude, youve been at it for how long? I check out your videos once every couple of years and i hope you'll eventually get better at this. But no. It might be time to find a different trade. Guitar mods/repairs clearly aren't in your wheelhouse. Maybe just pay Dave to do your projects. I'd love to hear him cuss you out for all your lazy bone-headed fails.
