Citizen's high end watches have amazing finishing too. I have 2 HAQs, one GS (SBGV017) and one Citizen (CTQ57-093). I got the GS a couple of years before the Citizen, and I was thinking that the finishing would be hard to beat, but had to pick up the Citizen when I saw it in person. Amazing finish, and also better specced movement, with a +/-5 sec per year rating and a perpetual calendar on that model.

My husbands Grand Seiko 25th Anniversary SBGV238 is accurate to 2 seconds per year (Checked with the WWV Atomic Clock.)...The new Citizen has a quartz crystal that vibrates 256 times faster than the Grand Seiko's 32,768 Hz. So the Grand Seiko is pretty astonishing considering its much lower quartz frequency. By the way, the Grand Seiko 9F checks the temperature every two and two thirds minutes, not 3 as is stated in the video.

Quartz are hassle free watches. I have many mechanicals and many of them give me headaches with maintenance amd accuracy. Each movement type has their pros and cons. I have 3 quartz watches that I have owned for many years and they are very reliable. I still prefer mechanicals as there's something fascinating about how they work

If it's high end I would have to go mechanical. It's EMP proof 😂. Actually I might give affordable mechanicals a try like the Islander 38.

since they took a leaf of their conquest, the Boluva, with regards to a ultra high frequency quartz,... i pray that they make the second hand sweeps as well.
@WatchGeek6 жыл бұрын
Although I would love if they did that too, I don't think it will happen as Citizen announced long time ago that the sweeping hand will be exclusive to Bulova
@borbetomagus6 жыл бұрын
If i'm not mistaken, a Bulova Precisionist movement runs at 8 times (262.144 kHz) the frequency of the standard quartz movement (32.768 kHz). This sounds very impressive, but it's pales in comparison to the Citizen 0100 movement which runs at 256 times times (8,388.608 kHz) the frequency of a standard quartz movement. Considering it's possible to get a Precisionist watch for as little as $100 (if you're lucky), this probably won't be possible with the Citizen 0100 movement anytime soon, but I'd certainly buy one! They'll probably start at $2000 (or more). I just wonder where the accuracy of standard wristwatches would be had John Harrison been taken more seriously during his lifetime (and devoted more time to watch making) -- /watch?v=sQAY-zFkVyQ
@gamewizard17603 жыл бұрын
I don't think the battery life will be good enough if they tried giving it a smoothly sweeping second hand like the Precisionist, in addition to the incredibly high frequency that they are vibrating the crystal at. The second hand on the Precisionist moves 16 times in one second, almost too fast to see. The 0100 moves the second hand once per second. They already had to do a lot of re-engineering at great expense just to get the battery life up to where it is now. My feeling is that the jerky sweep of the second hand is a compromise that had to be made to conserve power.

I'm a big fan of citizen eco drive. My old one was looking a bit worse for wear so i ought a new seiko. But after being use to my citizen, always correct time, i was disappointed with my new fancy expensive seiko. So i decided to get the old one out again. Quite a few months later i fished it out of the box which was at the back of the dresser and i saw the time on it was the same as the present time. What a coincidence i thought, what about day and date, OMG!!! It was correct, everything. I couldn't believe it. So i just purchased a beautiful new Citizen eco drive, paid a lot of money for it, but I wont ever have to buy another watch, and i dont want to keep on checking to see if its got correct time, if anyone asks me for the correct time, i look at my citizen wristwatch and confidently give it.

@gamewizard17603 жыл бұрын
Quality is bad. I see hundreds of complaints everywhere about it, especially the Indiglo when it fails. They have to repair or replace it while it's under warranty, but once the warranty expires, you're on your own, and it costs more to repair it than it does to throw it away and buy another watch and the Indiglo fails on all of them eventually. Many people even complain that they can't get repair authorization from Timex at all on watches with Indiglo problems outside of warranty.

I’m not sure if it’s typical, but my Seiko 9F is on track to gain less than 1second for the year!
@JimIBobIJones2 жыл бұрын
That's really unfair to Citizen. Citizen has always outcompeted Seiko on the high end/high accuracy quartz side. Their high end quartz, even before the 0100, left Seiko's dead in the dust. Citizen's thermocompensated quartz (the "A0" range) came at +/- 5 seconds a year as standard, whereas Grand Seiko only offered +/- 10, with only very limited, special edition models being rated for +/- 5.
@jannilsson58726 жыл бұрын
As a quartz lover and owner of both Grand Seikos and The Citizen I am super exited to see this in production watches. Now that Grand Seiko is being a brand of it own I feel they are going in the wrong direction making limited editions and moore expencive watches. If Citizen were to put this movement in a wider range of watches, they will force a new standard in to quartz movements, making the Swiss once again tremble or adapt, as in the ´70´s. Citizen being a brand known for good value watches, my hopes are that 50 (2019) years after Seiko started the quartz revolution 1969, the can do the same next year. QFTW

@canonyeo42866 жыл бұрын
Phillip, the Citizen Chronomaster is better from the aspect that it's a perpetual calendar and the hour hand can be adjusted independently. But in term of aesthetics, it's way off from the GS. I have never seen a Chronomaster that appeals to me. Also, both my 9F is plus to 2 to 3 sec/year. So, I can go without the plus 1 sec thing, unless it looks good like the GS too. I have two Seiko Dolce 8Jxx that is specified as +/-10s/year. I have both at plus 2 to 3 s/year like the GS, and it cost less than 400 dollars. I believe this caliber is similar to the 8Jxx used in the Ladies GS. In my view, these Dolce also looks better than the Chronomaster.

Thanks for the video! Here's hoping that Citizen wins in another important aspect: Price! It would be so incredible if this trickles down into their traditionally very affordable Eco-Drive lineup. I love the tech of Grand Seiko, but their luxury brand pricing is way too far out of reach. If Citizen can put equally impressive tech into some affordable pieces, that would truly be an amazing achievement.
@WatchGeek6 жыл бұрын
I don't think these will be under $1500-2000 as those are prices of the current Chronomasters by Citizen that have an accuracy of +-5 seconds a year
@TheTimLara6 жыл бұрын
$1500-ish street price would not be bad, and still be far below the cost of high end Swiss quartz offerings, so that would be cool to see. To me, high end quartz is more for people who appreciate the "tool watch" aspect over the "jewelry" aspect, so I'm just hoping to see this tech marketed more on the affordable/practical end of the spectrum. With Seiko raising prices lately, I think there is a good market opportunity for Citizen to reach enthusiasts who prefer to stay in the sub-$1000 range.

There's an interesting tangent of wealth that Asia has spawned. They care more about high tech than materials (some, not all, still a niche atm). For example, this watch, the highest tech in the world in stainless steel would be worth more than a less technologically advanced watch in platinum to certain individuals in Hong Kong, certain individuals with insane amounts of disposable cash. "Old money" (typically Swiss) is clashing with "new money" (super high end tech, typically China) as it were.

My 100 euro Edifice watches lose a second a month, 2 secs at worst, even though they are rated at +/-20 secs by Casio. That's all the accuracy I will ever need. It's hard to beat +1/-1 second per year for accuracy. The cost of creating something totally new that keeps even better time may not be justifiable.

There are 3 types of Grand Seiko movements: 1. Mechanical 2. Spring Drive 3. Quartz Only the third one uses battery

Watch Geek oh I just checked that on their website. Fascinating technology!

As the spring unwinds and the little "balance wheel" if we can call it that spins, it spins in between 2 coils with magnets creating a small amount of electricity that then powers the quartz crystal and the IC circuit that then uses those same coils and magnets to magnetically brake the spinning "balance wheel"

What is BPH of this?
@WatchGeek6 жыл бұрын
It beats once a second as its quartz but if you count in the vibration of it's crystal it would be equivalent to approximately 59.997.600.000 bph 😄

Citizen already killed the 9F movements with the chronomaster line/ The Citizen JDM only (+/_5sec/year) several years ago. I have a chronomaster Ti from 2016. The normal Seiko 9F models only have a +/- 10sec per year accuracy, only some limited edition models are accurate to 5 sec.
@gmt30195 жыл бұрын
But... many report less the 5 seconds per year with the standard 9F. There are also special editions of the 9F that are rated to 5 SPY. I have a friend who hasn't touched his SBGX117 for just over 3 years and it's only +4 seconds. The 9F has one fundamental oversight, in that it lacks quickset hour hand. So you can't jump the hour hand forward or back without hacking the watch, which means crossing timezones will lose your accuracy tracking. The new quartz GMTs from Seiko do have quickset hour hand however. Citizen also has perpetual calendar, something with Seiko doesn't have.

Phillip Pugh I think you misunderstood my comment There are quite a few citizen haters/grand seiko purists out there that bash whatever they think is silly Not saying all GS purists are like that, only some but... they do exist...
@phillippugh21616 жыл бұрын
Harvard Ford while I get your point. The fact is as good as citizen watches are they will never be considered no more then tool watches very good ones but the level of passion that Seiko has especially the Grand Seiko level of fandom . Is something that's always be there between the two companies. There's plenty of watch makes that make accurate quartz watches Bulova being one of them with it's precisionist brand. Fact is nobody would dare pay over $500 for an quartz watch but grand Seiko. It more because of the level of build quality then if it gains are loses a second over a year

It's not a Seiko killer. They released a limited edition version for $7400, but the movement is a stopwatch calibre, so it's massive on your wrist like a marriage watch. The second hand is also not smooth like the spring drive. It ticks once per second, so it's jerky, but it does land solidly on the second markers every time, to Citizen's credit. It's annoying to see the second hand on any watch miss the second markers and is a sign of poor workmanship or poor engineering. They will have to shrink it to a smaller size and try to get the price down if they want to mass produce them. For $7400, there are a lot of more prestigious watches that you can buy. You can buy a Rolex Oyster Perpetual without complications for $6000 or less, and people will be more impressed by it.

One word: Bulova. They've been doing 256mhz quartz units for decades. Sorry, Citizen, apart from the solar aspect, you're not breaking new ground on this.
@WatchGeek6 жыл бұрын
A few corrections, Bulova is doing 262 kHz, not Mhz. So their frequency is 262.000 Hz, while this one is approximately 8.400.000 Hz which is quite a lot more. Secondly, Bulova is owned by Citizen and they introduced their UHF quartz when Citizen took over which makes me think it was Citizen who designed their movements

Can't see any corners cut on the Grand Seiko I own, the quality of it looks better than my Omega and Tudor mechanical watches.
@trieunguyen58976 жыл бұрын
Seiko cut corner on lower models, but when you get to presage and grand seiko models. Their quality is very good even better than most Swiss companies that come with higher prices tag
@philipjames32946 жыл бұрын
Grand Seiko is now a separate brand to Seiko, so the quality of a Seiko watch isn't really relevant to this video. I agree they are a lot better than a lot of the well known Swiss brands.
@captain69396 жыл бұрын
Trieu Nguyen as much as I love seiko! I have to disagree with you man.. on the presage line they in fact cut corners!! One is the leather strap (which is tough and not as good compare to the similar price point watches and the other being the plastic movement holder, which really sucks...
@davidg18306 жыл бұрын
I understand Seiko move to separate Grand Seiko from "normal" Seiko watches, but really I don't like that move: it is like if Seiko was embarrassed about "normal" Seiko, and what I liked about Grand Seiko was that it WAS SEIKO. I liked Seiko in top big and bright letters, and Grand Seiko in low position and smaller letters as a line inside Seiko. I was proud a GS was a first and always a Seiko, and I liked people saw it is SEIKO. If most people don't know this GS line, it wasn't a problem for me, as I bought that watch for me and only other people with enough knowledge can know how good it is. Of course, I understand move from Seiko separating brands, they want to create a more renowned name in top market. But I don't like GS brand: I like SEIKO brand. I think it is now less possible I bought a GS watch. In case I would prefer to wait for a anniversary edition with SEIKO brand in top and big letters and "Grand Seiko" in low position as always it was. You can call me conservative about Seiko heritage :)

I dont like quartz movement...
@debendragurung30336 жыл бұрын
U are getting the whole freakin thing wrong. Wrong at so many levels. Grand Seiko is mechanical watch with only the escapement arm controlled by quartz oscillator. It has limited to none silicon chip. The primary drive is still the coil spring not the battery. The capacitor(in MicroFarads range) it charges releases as little as few microAmperes of current just enough to oscillate quartz. Power reserve in newer movement is upto 8 days all on the Spring... The Citizen here is pure battery powered movement with a battery(not a capacitor) , and currents in 100 times more in milliamps range to drive the motor, escapement and everything that moves. Its rather comparable ti the SeikoAstron GPSsolar watches- that houses battery powered by Light, and also syncs with GPS. These watches for Seiko are lot more easier than the GS spring drive, thus the price difference....
@WatchGeek6 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but you are wrong, you are talking about Spring Drive (9R) which is one of 3 types of movement by Grand Seiko, with the other two being mechanical (9S) and a regular battery operated quartz movement (9F) go to Grand Seiko web page and see for yourself
@8AP16 жыл бұрын
debendra gurung - You couldn't be more wrong. As said already, the 9FXX series are thermocompensated quartz used in the Grand Seiko line. They have been out for some time now. There are even some special editions that are actually rated to +/- 5 SPY. Seiko even make their own quartz crystals.
@debendragurung30336 жыл бұрын
Perksie81 Ok . Yet , the Battery powered Quartz isn't the charm of Grand Seiko. The Spring Drive is the real deal. I see it as the marriage of traditional watch with the modern concept. Since I've heard that quartz due to its piezoelectricity oscillates at frequency 2^15 Hz(32768) , which were indeed used to master clock frequencies of Microcontroller . Behold the age of Silicon revolution and Quartz as it's time keeper - And Seikos Incorporated that very concept to control time keeping was geekiest moment of the time. Of course indeed making a higher frequency oscillators is no big deal as today the CPU frequencies is at GHZ level, But what matters is the concept. Even better was the Spring Drive mechanical movement with escapement arm controlled by Quartz. It was the true marriage of traditional with modern era. It incorporates essence that revolutized the past and the present.
@8AP16 жыл бұрын
debendra gurung I don't understand the relevance. This video is comparing two HAQ quartz models between the new citizen and Seiko calibres. Spring drive is awesome, but nothing to do with this video
@debendragurung30336 жыл бұрын
Perksie81 This Video clearly mentioned the average loss in seconds per year in the quartz time keeping to be a threatening factor for GS. Which directly correlates with the oscillator frequency of piezoelectric crystals. After quartzs phenomenon were discovered we had number of crystals with higher frequency, and better yet we have developed non quartz based RLC circuit to resonate at higher frequencies now at GHZ level used to control time keeping for microprocessor. The Citizens more precise time accuracy isn't a defining trait to make it more superior over Grand Seiko. Your mobile or even a standalone Casio G shcok can beat it by large margin. But what's beautiful about GS is the Spring Drive, and minimal scale current to quartz oscillation. Also what's more fascinating about quartz 2^15 frequency is it rhymes with the binary digit code. 2,16,32,64,128,256,1024 ..... 32768, which are Geometric power series of 2. Which scales up exactly like your generational RAM memory increases.
