Rome was a democracy with zero political violence for over 250 years. Then, they had their first dictator. The Romans didn't believe it could happen to them either. Democracy is something that must be maintained and defended.

Rome is really not that great of an example to build from considering it was rotting from the inside out already when Julius Caesar made his move. His message carried weight precisely because other Romans could see what was going on, just as Americans can see the manifestly unfair systems in place today in the US further widening the wealth divide between the classes.

I think you entirely misunderstand not only the Roman Republic (although I’m not sure what years you’re referring to here exactly with the reference to 250 years free from political violence) but also Julius Caesar himself and what his goals were. There was a full century of increasing political violence between 150BC and the lead up to Julius Caesar, caused by the massive increase of wealth inequality among the aristocratic class and their efforts to use this wealth to capture control of all levels of government (the tribunes of the plebes and the assemblies, the consuls, and the senate) and then use their traditional control of the senate to create political deadlock and factional strife within the senate over the issue of debt cancellations and land redistribution, issues very popular with the plebes and especially with the military who were getting increasingly frustrated by the failure of the senate to make good on reasonable land grants to soldiers as part of their compensation for successful campaigns. The senators rich aristocratic families had benefited immensely from the long military campaigns that had made immense amount of choice land available to them when farms failed as soldiers spent years away from Italy on campaign. The rich aristocracy had already killed the Republic when Caesar made his populist appeal to the plebes to cancel massive amounts of personal debt to the senatorial class as well as strip many of the richest families of much of their land for his loyal military men. THIS is why the Senators plotted to murdered Caesar. Not because he wanted to be king. That was the story they relentlessly told later in order to curry favor for the ruling class. They’d already greedily abandoned Republican values to enrich themselves then murdered any man who threatened the scam they had set up within government centered on their control of the Senate. First the Gracchus brothers. Then Julius Caesar. They so resisted sharing the new wealth of the Republic they encouraged political violence to stop it and created libelous narratives about any reformer who threatened the system.

They were a democratic Republic initially but overthrew Israel shortly after that, so your idea of zero political violence is inaccurate. As the republic failed, it really became more of an oligarchy, as all nation-states eventually do, before they totally fail. I would argue that they may have operated in the best interest of the majority, for maybe 50 to 100 years before catering to monetary interests, like all governments eventually do.

I just helped to put my ex-husband in jail. I had to testify against him and I was super nervous to face that "strong man" DT type in court. When she describes him as nothing.
