Watch the GE Ultrafresh Washing Machine Run a Normal "Time Saver" Cycle - uncut

Some people wanted to see how a GE UltraFresh clothes washer cleans clothing on the normal cycle with time saver selected. In this video we're washing some mattress covers and 2 woven cotton blankets. The machine pauses at the 8 minute mark as it tries to balance the load.

Thank you so much for posting this! It confirmed for me that our older model GE front loader is using WAY too little water. I'd say it fills with about a half gallon of water total for wash, no matter the cycle (except for the basket clean, but that's probably too little too) and maybe a pint for rinse even with Extra Rinse selected. Ugh. Now I'm off to either get service out or buy a new one.

Thanks for posting this running video. I just got this unit last weekend to replace my LG front loader and the GE is a little nosier when the drum spins. Like almost like a metal on metal sound. But it seems to be working find. This video confirms that's just want a GE sounds like.

Sounds like an airplane taking off… Hey, if you didn’t stack the machines, makes sure they are spaced far enough apart that the washer doesn’t hit the dryer and break the trim. (Or add a bumper between the machines for that off-balanced load that makes the washer smack into the dryer.)

Thanks for the tip though, my laundry room is really small in size but it very wide where the washer and dryer go. So they are about 6-7" apart. I should be ok. I will say so far, it does seem more stable than the LG but I haven't washed my sheets or lots of towels yet.

Thank you for posting this. I just got this set and I was thinking there was a malfunction because there’s almost no water in there. I even had plumbers out here working on my water pressure in my house. The wet clothes tumbling around in there with no water scared me to death but I guess that’s how it’s supposed to be 🤷🏻‍♀️ I wash clothes on the Self Clean setting sometimes to get them tumbling in some soapy water.

I thought the same at the beginning. I tested this with a ketchup stained white towel and it came out clean. Maybe it's the engineering that found the right amount of water to save on water and electricity (to spin the drum). Hope this helps you a bit. Enjoy

don't use the self clean with anything front loaders aren't supposed to use a lot of water they. use just enough to saturate the fabric you also don't want suds they are bad for the machine and make it not clean well you only need 1 tablespoon of detergent for a normal load and 2 if you fill the drum up do not use the cup that came with your detergent it is way to much also they will not come out of the dryer smelling. like detergent if you want them to smell get some of that fabric spray febreze has some also don't use fabric softener it will gum up your machine and cause mold that's stuff is made from refined animal fat with scented in it

@@patcola7335 smells have nothing to do with not using enough water. These washers get smelly because people keep the doors closed when not in use and any moisture left in the washer causes mold to grow. I have had a front l loader for 15 years, the door and detergent tray is always slightly open when not in use, I wipe the gasket after every l load. This machine has never had a smell. Every front load machine's owners manual tells you to do this. If a machine smells it is user error.

It's amazing!!!! I own one. It does everything I was expecting and better. It takes out any stain. BTw excellent video. Regarding the difficulty trying to balance the sheets. It's quite common for front loaders to have difficulty managing large loads. I saw a video from an LG front loader and it took it 4 attempts and made terrible clanking noise (new model) when accelerating. I washed a king size fluffy comforter and 2 king size sheets and it managed to balance the load and spin to the max setting. Love my GE freshvent!

We’ve had it 3 years. I replied to your other comment earlier today. They say the machine is louder than other front loaders because there are vents on the front of the machine. That sound doesn’t bother me. It does make the hot water pipes in our house bang. I find that more annoying. We have installed hammer arrestors to stope the banging, but need to try them on the machine vs on the pipes. I think any newer machine would cause the same pipe banging in our house.

You shouldn't ever use tap cold water for a wash. The detergent will not fully break down. The 'cold' setting makes sure the temperature is at a minimum set point so that it breaks down and cleans properly. Also, if the water is too cold, your machine will have serious buildup.

Thanks for the video! I had a quick question.... on a normal load of laundry and on the high speed spin setting... do the clothes come out pretty dry? The reason that I ask is because we do not have a dryer and we line dry our clothes and use a drying rack in the winter time. We need a washer that will spin them pretty dry so they dry as quick as possible on the rack. Thanks!

The clothes come out pretty dry compared to a top loader. It will really depend on a few things - how much you put in the dryer (I tend to overload it) and what kind of materials are you washing. Heavier items like towels, jeans or high quality, absorbent hoodies tend to come out wetter. Athletic clothing and lightweight items come out damp. There is a learning curve, but washing similar materials together will spin out best.

The “Bedding” cycle might use more water. I think the machine adds water based on the weight of the clothing/contents. Another option suggested someone in the comments: wash with both the pre-wash and extra rinse options selected. The other thing to remember is that “friction cleans”. The clothing rubbing against each other helps them to get clean. Finally, if the clothing is coming out dry in the middle (because the machine truly isn’t wetting all of the contents), contact GE customer service and have it looked at.

On the floor. We did stack them eventually, so the dryer is on the washer. It wobbles a little, but it’s usually only annoying when the load isn’t balanced. (For example, a couple of extra absorbent hoodies in a load of regular shirts and pants can mess up the balance because they are so heavy when wet.)

We just purchased the exact same washer and dryer setup - GE 650/65 in satin nickel... No matter what setting we use - the clothes get wet, but there is absolutely no sitting water (not even a half-cup of water) in the washer drum for the clothes to go through... Is yours the same...?

Yes, the machine uses “just enough” water based on the principle that friction cleans.

I wash in Normal setting, Pre-wash, Maximum Spin, Extra Rinse and Warm Water 80% of the time. The Ultrafresh Vent system and Antimicrobial feature was the main selling point for my purchase. The 650 model would have been a better choice for me.

We chose the UltraVent so we can close the door in a high use/small space with compulsive door-closing family members. What model did you get? 550? 850? It’s a bit loud, like a jet engine spinning, but you get used to it (or learn to use it by day vs night). Also, the pipe banging sounds caused by the machine bother me more than the spinning/draining noise. I do love how fast it can run a cycle.

Do you have the matching dryer? How do you not get a load this size to bunch up in the dryer?

Yes, we have the matching dryer. For a weird load like this, I would put the lightweight mattress covers in the dryer by themselves - probably on medium heat and “extra dry.” The cotton blankets could go in the dryer together, but I tend to dry them on hot. If the dryer stops and they are bunched / balled up, I I bunch them and start it again. It’s not perfect, but it works. Our dryer is gas if that matters to you.

Here are some guesses with possible solutions: 1) make sure the water is still turned on where the hoses connect to the faucet. 2) there should be a small filter where the hoses connect to the washer. One time when we had this type of problem, the filter was clogged.

I’m pretty happy with our purchase. The machine may sound louder than other front loaders because there are vents in the front. The customer service during the first year is good. We did need to replace the gasket this year. We use the machine heavily. I love how quickly I can wash and dry a small load. It is a little fussy about what you wash together - a sheet + a cotton blanket probably won’t spin out well. Maybe all front loaders are like that? It doesn’t use much water - is that a plus or minus? But you can use prewash and extra rinse to get more water if you want it.

I’d say the machine adjusts the amount of detergent and water used… you adjust the cycle time and water temperature. If I have a smaller load or I’m in a hurry, I use the 20min Quick Wash cycle. Recently I’ve started using longer wash cycles to get our clothing cleaner. Does that help?

“Normal” appears 2x on the washer - as a cycle and as a soil level. A normal cycle (using the main knob at 11 o’clock position) with normal soil, warm water temp and max spin takes 58min on my machine. If I press the “Time Saver” button, the time is reduced to 39min. Likewise, there are 2 ways to speed up a cycle - the Quick Wash cycle (1 o’clock knob position) and the “time saver” button. A Quick Wash cycle with normal soil, warm water and max spin takes 33 minutes. You cannot shorten it with the Time Saver button, but you can reduce the time by using the Extra Light soil option and medium spin. That makes the cycle 20 minutes.

I once saw a hint for making a high efficiency washer (top loader) use more water. The person used a sprayer from the utility sink to wet some of the clothing. The concept: adding water makes the clothing weigh more and tricks the machine into using more water. I don’t know if it works for front loaders or for this particular machine.

Just get the clothes wet first by starting a load then aborting cycle as soon as clothing is wet through. Then start a new cycle (the system will first pump out any excess H2O pooled in the outer drum) and the additional weight of the now soaked clothes will be interpreted as a larger load and trigger the addition of “extra” water. Been doing this since purchasing my first front loader in 2005.

I don’t know. The loudest sounds that my machine makes are the hot water pipes banging when the machine stops filling (we installed a pipe arrester to help) and spinning when the loud is imbalanced. Other people might know better about the pump sounds.

I *think* the Bedding cycle may use more water. Bedding is dense, absorbent, but light weight. That setting probably uses more water per pound of clothing. I want to test this theory, but haven’t yet. As a side note, these machines use “friction” to clean vs lots of detergent or water.

My GE Ultra Fresh started leaking from the door gasket only after 3 months. I would never buy another GE product because of the way they have handled the issue....the tech actually said he could see no problem even though I had video of the leak. He also said he suggests not running the washer when we are not home......come again? Insane.

I know there is an extra rinse option you can set when you start a cycle. There’s also a pre wash option. I think you can do manual rinse and spin cycles as much as you want. I don’t think that would be necessary though. Maybe you’d only need the “Sanitize + Allergen” cycle which takes 1:47 min and uses extra hot water, heavy soil and max spin? Add an extra rinse and it’s a 1hr 55 min cycle, but I bet the clothing would be clean!

Yes, I think it’s normal (except for bulky comforters). It uses minimal water and relies on friction and some detergent to clean the clothing. Use the “bulky/bedding” setting for fluffier bedspreads and blankets. I suspect the machine weighs the contents and adjusts the amount of water accordingly. One time I washed a light, fluffy comforter on the normal setting and the inside still seemed dry when it finished the cycle. Hope that helps! Have fun!

I just got this same set and color. In normal mode, when it gets to 15 minutes left the machine shuts off and doesn't spin out the water. Does anyone else have this problem. Also, in rinse and spin it doesn't put water in and the drum just turns slowly and goes back and forth from 10 to 13 minutes for about 20 minutes. After about 20 minutes it drops to 6 minutes and spins.

@@fixthishouse3303 all cycles are set to high or max under spin cycle. Clothes all get wet except rinse and spin (they don't get wet or spin) they just tumble. When washer gets to 10 minutes left it goes back to 13 down to 10 and repeats 9 more times then the washer shuts off and says end. Clothes come out soaked. The spin cycle doesn't work so i run quick cycle which is the only cycle that spins.

Its lasted you 2 years but that spin cycle at the end needs you to intervene and redistribute the load. Especially if the "Spin' light is blinking. It only blinks if the control board has tried but failed to balance. It could damage the washer which is why it keeps spinning at lower speeds. I have this issue occasionally but always redistribute if it needs it.

@@fixthishouse3303 Hard to explain, but you can tell by tapping on it with a fingernail and it also doesn't scratch as easily. If you had it side by side with a plastic Whirlpool or Maytag door you'd be able to tell the difference immediately. That's one of the things that drew us to GE. When you compare it side by side with the Whirlpool 8620 pretty much everything you can see and touch feels like better quality. That doesn't necessarily mean it is better quality of course, but it does tend to bode well.

I’m guessing that the machine isn’t leaking water on the floor. If you wash a light but bulky comforter on the bedding cycle, is the inside wet? Stop the machine halfway through the cycle to check it. You could also do the same thing with any load. Stop the machine halfway through the cycle. The clothing should be thoroughly wet. You won’t see excess water in the machine, just enough for the clothing to be saturated.

@@fixthishouse3303 That’s not true. The machine gently increases the wash temperature and optimizes the motion pattern to get the items cleaned faster. Plus, the vast of the time that is taken away from the final spin. With normal wash the final spin is 22 minutes and with time saver its only 8.

It’s a longer story... our hot water pipes bang throughout the house when we use anything but “tap cold” water. We have renters in part of the house, so we mostly use cold water unless they aren’t home. We bought the part to fix the banging pipes but haven’t installed it yet. Also, this machine has a self-clean option that should remove gunk buildup.

@@sharifrancis8154 Do you think calling or writing GE Customer Service would help? *Maybe* there is a setting to adjust the amount of water used? Tell them you think the the clothing isn’t getting wet enough. I wonder if the “Bedding” setting uses more water. I once saw a video where someone wet the clothing before using an HE top load washer that used too little water. He had a spray nozzle on his utility sink faucet next to the washer. I think the machines add water based on how heavy the clothing is. Heavier contents should mean more water is added. Just a few ideas.

She put it in time saver mode (which shouldn't have been used for this particular kind of laundry, but I digress). Front loaders already don't use a lot of water, but time saver modes use even less water.

This machine seems all right, but the major downer for me is the fact that it does not spin in between wash and rinse, or between rinses. This means that any suds in the load are not spun out. Sure, HE detergents, especially when used the correct amount, mitigate the suds problem, I still feel like there is a drop in rinsing performance simply because it doesn't spend the extra couple minutes to spin in between rinses.

I’m pretty sure mine spins between wash and rinse. Now I’ll have to watch my own video again! But I’m sure I’ve heard mine speed up before rinsing (often when the load is uneven so it’s memorable) and I’ve never seen suds in the final laundry. Am I missing something? Maybe it doesn’t spin it completely? Is that what you mean?

@@fixthishouse3303 In this particular video, it thinks about spinning, going into the balancing phase, but it ultimately decided to not spin. I have seen two other videos of this machine, one on the normal setting without time save and another on bulky. Both carried out a very brief spin up, but It was no longer than a minute. Personally I would like to see spinning for at least 2 minutes. That being said, I have not seen any other cycle on this machine, so I'm unsure as to if other cycles do a longer/more proper spin cycle. It's good to hear that you haven't had any issues with rinsing even despite this, however. At that point it just comes down to a personal nitpick of mine. It seems like a good washer, don't get me wrong.

There is an accelerometer sensor that should be built into the top of the outer rear tub or at least there was one unless they engineered that out in one the variations of this model. It senses vibration in one or more axis so the washer can find the optimal rotational speed. Although it's supposed to blink the spin light if this error occurs and it can't spin at the selected speed. Otherwise the pump may be obstructed which can cause clothes to still be damp. It should still be spinning between cycles, although the selected spin speed is only applied on the final spin.

I should probably re-watch this to remember what stain didn’t come out, but these machines work on the principle that “friction cleans”. I probably should use the full normal cycle vs the fast normal cycle for better stain removal.

Thanks for the video. I hear the sound of water hammer once washer stops filling. I think you need to install water hammer arrestor to stop that hammering as it is bad for your pipes in the long run.

Friction cleans. I think that’s the idea: more friction, less water. You might be able to wash on the “bedding” setting for bulky blankets. I bet that uses more water.

I don’t get using cold water, it’s gross you wouldn’t wash your dishes or body in cold. Hotter the water the better the cleaning at removing grease and skin particles. Front loader washers need extra hot washes from time to time. This keeps the inside tub & sump fresh like new and towels looking spotless clean

We wash on hot occasionally. Our clothing doesn’t get that dirty and our monthly electric/gas bill is high. We’d also run out of hot water and people would complain about cold showers. I do love hot water though. So many factors to consider! Thanks for expressing your thoughts.

I think they work on the principle that friction cleans. If the machine weighs the clothing to determine how much water to add, you might be able to wet the clothing to trick the machine into using more water. The “bedding” option may also use more water (bedding is light, but bulky, requiring more water). These statements are my own opinion, not based on actual research on this machine 🙂

Front loading washers don't use nearly as much water. That's one of the main reasons for having one. In particular in this case, time saver option will use even less water, as it's meant for smaller loads than this.

When haier acquired ge appliances, I was expecting this new lineup to have crazy designs and new features. But no, it just functions like a 2004 kenmore front load with the crappy programming, crappy sensors and a brushed motor in 2021... newer front loads already have vents, they just moved it to the front on this model to make it more obvious. I'll pass on GE.

We do a lot of laundry - sheets, blankets and towels for Airbnb’s, so when our old washer(s) died we got the GE UltraFresh one. What do you think of Speed Queens?
