Who the hell buys a muscle car and is concerned with MPG and third wheel passengers bitching about getting into the back seat? No one I wanna be around.

According to Dodge, Challenger sales have been slowly INCREASING since its debut in 2008! That's unusual in the auto industry. Sales usually DECREASE over the years. This is why Dodge keeps putting-off the discontinuation of the Challenger. It's also why they haven't changed the body styling that much. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Everyman Driver My son is grown and gone so no kids for the back seat. My 2013 Challenger R/T is a 2 seater as far as I'm concerned.
@GuytheCarGuy10 жыл бұрын
I own a 2014 and 2015 Mustang. I test drove the 2014 Dodge Challenger R/T several times... because I really do like the look of them a lot. Still, I settled on a Mustang. My two biggest reasons for not opting for the Challenger have to do with power per dollar (Mustang is cheaper, has 50+ more HP and is a lot lighter) and the near unholy levels of body roll the challenger has. Pressing it into a hard turn at speed makes for a near Blue Angels worthy level of body roll. Then, when you snap back straight, the body rolls the opposite direction with a pendulum effect. It does this a few times until finally centering itself. The Challenger is a very comfortable car... but it honestly feels like a Buick with an exhaust pipe upgrade (and new Buicks are even faster than the Challenger). The Camaro SS with the LE1 package and the Mustang GT with the performance package upgrade aren't even in the same class as the Challenger R/T. The Challenger Hellcat is a bit more fun in a straight line... but even that has the same level of sloppy body roll. Great straight line cars... but in turns they're no different than Grandma's Buick.
@1redrubberball10 жыл бұрын
Guy Gordon I suppose it has to do with your age, level of experience and expectations. I was a Mustang and Cougar fan for 40 years. I actively hotrodded them and built a really nice engine for one (351-C) I suspect you may desire to push cars further than I do anymore. The very fact that you describe the handling as you do, indicates that the car is not for you and that you overdrove it. Read that as abusing it. My Challenger does not exhibit the body roll you speak of. There's fast (comes down to weight and HP) and then there's fast enough. 0-60 mph in 5.4 sec. is my idea of fast enough. My White 2013 R/T can get me in far more trouble than I'd care to get in, so the SRT-8 or the Hellcat would be less desirable. Forget HP anyway on the street. Torque is what gets you up to speed and my 5.7 L has 400 lb ft. That was the domain of the big block back in the day. I'm glad you found the car that makes you happy. My car reminds me of Kowalski's car in Vanishing Point. It's fun to drive, fills my need for nostalgia and has killer looks! Also, it gets 27 mpg on the highway! In the old days it would have gotten 10.
@GuytheCarGuy10 жыл бұрын
I typically want cars that are fun to drive. The Challenger is fun for what it is built for. However, when you look at the cost and compare it to other cars in its class... It comes down to styling because the Challenger is the slowest car in its class, the most expensive in its class and has the worst safety ratings. The hellcat is the fastest in its class for the 2015 model year (but not by much). It is however 20k more expensive than a new Corvette which absolutely outperforms it in every category sans trunk space and rear seat room. That price will be its downfall. As much as I like a classic heavyweight muscle car... I just can't buy one that costs more than its worth (you can buy the same supercharger on the hellcat and put it on a stock RT for under 8k installed). Lastly... You might not notice the body roll... But if you go test drive a Camaro or Mustang... You'll see what I mean. That's what 4600 pounds does.

A person that owned muscle cars back in the late '60's - early '70's era isn't necessarily looking for high visibility or backup cameras. Many of us are looking for a repeat performance of the cars we knew and loved then.

That's true. The Challenger IS a little hard to back up, but if you pull out slowly and use your side mirrors it's not so bad. But it's still a bit better than trying to back up a convertible with the top up.

I WAS TOO AT ONE POINT. TEST DROVE MUSTANG GT EXCELLENT AND FAST WITH 6 SPD. MANUAL WITH 3.73 REAR END. BUT RIDE IS TOO BUMPY. THE V6 MUSTANG OFFERS A MORE COMFORTABLE RIDE AND IS FINE WITH 6 SPD. MANUAL. SUSPENSION NOT AS BUMPY AS GT MODEL. I DROVE ALL 3 CHALLENGER MODELS AND THE SRT IS STILL THE BEST BY FAR AND MOST COMFORABLE OVER THE MUSTANG GT WITH MORE ROOM INSIDE.

GO WITH CHALLENGER IF YOU WANT MORE ROOM AND A MORE COMFORTABLE RIDE. BUT FORGET THE PERFORMANCE SUSPENSION UNLESS YOU LIKE A HARD RIDE OVER A SOFTER COMFORTABLE RIDE.
@1redrubberball10 жыл бұрын
My 2013 Challenger R/T has the 5.7L Hemi, 6 speed manual and 3.73 posi rearend. It is bone stock, no options and just the way I wanted it. The suspension is firm and flat cornering and the performance level is more than adequate to get in more trouble than you want. The comfort is excellent and the car feels like it's doing 55 mph when cruising at 70 on an Interstate hwy. Gas mileage averages 22 in my day to day driving, mostly country roads and I've gotten 26-27 mpg cruising 60-70 mph. Couldn't ask for anymore. I've had Mustangs and Cougars, back in the muscle car era. They were fun but rode like skateboards. The Challenger has independent rear suspension.
