After dreaming about owning a car like this for many years I bought an RT this past summer. I looked at Mustangs and Camaros but the Challenger stood out. Excellent performance, handling & comfort. Absolutely a joy to drive. Extra HP when you need it, good cornering and good braking. Pretty good on gas if you take it easy. Once consideration was winter driving. Good winter tires on a 20" rim were expensive ($2K) but needed for a Canadian winter. Some people I spoke with thought I was nuts to drive it in the winter but it's winter-ready: good clearance, good weight ratios, paddle-shifting for down-gearing, traction control, ABS, heated seats & mirrors, block heater & remote start. Have driven it through a couple of snowstorms and weeks of below minus 10C without any problems. It's as good as any of the past vehicles I have owned but needed a little practice to get used to rear-wheel drive. See few Mustangs or Camaros on the road this winter.

I was very surprised to hear that the Hyundai Genesis Coupe and the 370Z is considered competition for the Challenger R/T. He must be talking about the base model Challenger.
@danielc96359 жыл бұрын
+wildstar43 I think he's probably talking about the $30k-$40k price bracket. 370z starts at "technically" just under $30k, which is close enough to where Challenger R/T starts ($32,000ish) to say it's in the same price bracket.
@timmypstyle4 жыл бұрын
A 370Z actually is close in performance. They have less power but are lighter. So they keep up with the muscle cars better than you would think.

I bought a 2015 8spd challenger R/T back in 2017 and love it. It is just a weekend car so no rain or snow. I am 6'5" tall and with the seat all the way back a slight leaning of the seat back, I literally cannot fit the thickness of my hand in between the seats. There is literally maybe an inch of space. It is a very roomy car tho. The 8spd auto definitely makes the car enjoyable and their 23mpg highway number is way off as I get about 29mpgs at 65mpg and 26mpgs at 75mph. It is actually the most fuel efficient vehicle I've ever owned and I've had 14. Out of those 14, I had a 4 cylinder truck, 2 V6 trucks, 4 V8 trucks, 1 V6 van, 4 V6 cars and 2 V8 cars.

@@timmypstyle How are you liking your Challenger RT? I ask because I just bought a 2017 yellow and black Dodge Challenger RT+P. I have driven nothing but American muscle/pony cars my entire life. I have always been a GM guy until very recently. I actually parked my 2012 SS Camaro for my new Challenger as it was time and it got absolutely abysmal gas mileage (18 mpg if I was lucky on the highway). In the two weeks I have owned my Challenger I have gotten the exhaust done, Demon Chip Tune, and a cold air intake. I did this because mainly 375 hp just wasn't enough. I can't believe how cheap it was to upgrade the car and the types of gains I'm getting for chump change is staggering. The gas mileage on these cars (as long as you keep your foot out of them) is the stuff of legends for a muscle car. I'm hitting 28-29 mpg easy.
@timmypstyle2 жыл бұрын
@@Sinn0100 still love mine. Ive had my 15 since 2017 and have only put 12k miles on it. No mods yet except a resonator delete and racing stripes of my own design. I traded a 14 ram in for it and had a custom tune, ported and polished throttle body, vararam ram-air intake, and muffler delete. For a truck, it was a beast, but my challenger is quicker still.

I really can't understand why this car costs $35K in the R/T form. So it's got a V8, big deal. It's still an American car made by a company with one of the worst reputations for quality. The interior is boring and looks like a lot of cheap plastic.

Great video, Dave. I actually bought this same exact car a few weeks ago. My 3 year old boy can't get enough of it and has watched this video probably 100 times. He even tries to imitate you and does a "pretend" version using his power wheels jeep. I started up my car the other day and he said, "dripping with power!" Seriously! He's a trip... Anyway, keep up the good work. I really like your approach to your videos. At the very least, it convinced me to buy the black-red RT 6 speed!

Those two "cons" aren't really things that would turn people away. it's a heavy muscle car with a v8. and it's a coupe like all muscle cars. poor to fair gas mileage, rear seat accessibility, and legroom should automatically be expected

I bought my white R/T with 6 speed manual in Nov '12 as a retirement present to myself. It is my "toy" and I have an '03 Trailblazer for mundane use. Living in the country, my R/T is going at least 25 miles roundtrip and sees very little stop & go, city driving. It averages 20-22 mpg overall and gets 33 mpg cruising at 55 mph, 28 mpg @ 65 mph and 27 mpg @ 70 mph. I don't thrash, trash, or abuse mine. I don't race anyone either. I did that in the old days and my R/T is a fun to drive car that doesn't carry any kind of insurance penalty, doesn't get tickets, etc. But, make no mistake about it. It's capable of getting you in all the trouble you want to get in, and more, if you insist!

You're the first person, even among the many camaro owners I've met and compared notes with at the car shows I attend to think the current camaro looks like a previous generation, but I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder. Insurance costs on the Vette are high, but they are on the ZL1 as well because of their classification by the insurance companies. My SRT8 actually costs less to ensure than my 4WD Suburban which had me laughing, but not complaining either.

Only in Canada. In the U.S., you can get Chally RTs for 1-3k less than Mustangs and especially Camaros. And they don't "feel" slower because of the 400+ torque - it only matters if you race, in which case you're modding anyway.

yeah if they were trying to charge 56k my guess is they had already done a bunch of "dealer addons" to the car. I have seen sticker prices for 2013 SRT8s hit 53k with every option under the kitchen sink. The base SRT8 price is a little over 44k. The base for the ZL1 is 56k, but that's understandable with the SC and upgrades components to handle it.

To Summer Summich: your wrote of, "Respect the true muscle cars of ye old'e" printed me to respond. 1st - Obviously, the manufacturers do or the Camaro and Challenger would still be on the shelf. I'm happy Chevy bright back the Camaro, but they missed the mark on design of the 1968 everyone dreams of owning. I can't keep up with Ford's changes on the Mustang. Their 2015 version is alien. The rebirth of the Challenger has the old true die hard Mopar people elated with the body design. We have some issues with handling, but we won't give up the retro look for something that does not scream Challenger from just seeing it. As far as respect for the old. Trust me. We not only respect the b old muscle cars, we'd all love to have one. A 1971 Challenger R/T with Mopar Track Pack went for almost $300,000 at Barrett Jackson in Scottsdale. Most are in the six figure range restored. We are attempting to find a 70' Duster or Demon to restore with our son. If he doesn't work on it, he doesn't get to drive it. Do, please don't ever think everyone doesn't respect the old cars that came before. Most of us just can't afford them. Try finding an old 'Cuda for under $70k. You'll need another $75k-$100k.
