Erik’s house is getting another upgrade and if you’re thinking about replacing your own countertops you should definitely watch this video before doing so!
This shows the real struggle and how much work it can really be to have a good install on a new solid surface countertop… It seems super easy but as you will see it can be a lot of hard work!
We start by tearing the old counters, sink, and cooktop out and take it all the way through a finished functioning kitchen over a period of four days.

The "cuban guy" said that all his family lives in Santa María del Mar. That is a seaside resort with a beautiful beach. Very close is Marina Tarará, which is a town we used to go on school trips. I visited it as a child, until the government discontinued the program and reserved it to treat children affected by radiation from the Chernobyl catastrophe. Such great memories in that place with my mom and dad! By the way, if you want to know more about the Chernobyl accident, watch the minierie on Netflix. Love your videos ;)

If you wanna change anything about the cabinets, I think new hardware makes a huge difference. I changed some stuff from brushed silver to matte black in my house to make it a little more modern and it made a huge difference for me. Also, soft closed hinges and drawer pull will at least make them feel like much higher quality I think. Great little weekend project

You should always set up a laser when installing cabinets or checking them for that matter. The laser gives you one point of reference, using a level is harder and one cabinet to another could change just because of a racked cabinet, they are so easy to tweak and you need more than one level to get the job done, usually a big stick on your long front and back and a 24" for front to back. It is so much quicker and more accurate to use a self-leveling laser, the right tools for the right job lol. Sorry being a pro trim carpenter and many years of remodeling work as well as new construction you learn a few things lol. What's the use of knowledge if you don't pass it on
@jax3032
@jax3032 Жыл бұрын
Forgive me for I’m ignorant. Is it possible that lasers weren’t normal back in the early 90s or so? I think they mentioned the 90’s when talking about the original countertop.
@charleskashark108
@charleskashark108 Жыл бұрын
@@jax3032 The laser level was invented in the 1960s by Oscar Soliz who sold the rights and has been manufactured and developed into the lasers we use today. The first self-leveling lasers were being used in 1973 by many construction companies, everything from surveying, and ground grading to leveling foundations/footings, and yes even setting cabinets/countertops.

I installed countertops (laminate, quartz, natural stone, glass, Corian, etc) for 5 years. We tore out old tops on probably 30% of all installs we did. When removing, we always cut out the front and back piece on cooktops and sink holes completely (like left and right of the holes, front and back). That allowed us to be able to shimmy much smaller pieces of countertop off of the cabinets and out of the house.
@GoinDownTheRoadFeelinBad
@GoinDownTheRoadFeelinBad Жыл бұрын
I presently install countertops for home depot. For bigger tops just cut at the dishwasher with a jigsaw if possible. It contains all the saw dust on top of the dishwasher. Sink or cooktop is my 2nd choice. Also you have to put your level at the 90 between the cabinets to make sure both plans are at the same level.

Here is a nice tip for the oscilating tool - in order for the blades to last longer you could use a vacuum cleaner attached to it - that will keep the blade cooler. And you should test the festool or fein blades - they are a looot better for wood.
@MikeGusFifteen
@MikeGusFifteen Жыл бұрын
Also to add, yes fixing the flatness on those sags will help but regardless the installers are going to have to shim. Since theyll be joining together at least 3 piece of stone and putting a full height backsplash on top of it, that means all 3 piece have to be coplanar so shimming is going to happen regardless and therefore there's inevitably going to be some visible shim placement if you bend down to look.

Here in Germany you can always see if something was built pre-war or afterwards. The old buildings are beautiful and filled with details while the newer ones are concrete slabs most of the time. I don't like the modern style but I guess it's cheap. I have the feeling that the US has way more house styles. Here things like roof pitch etc. are heavily regulated and I pretty much never see things like porches, bay windows, 'towers', or even bigger garages that are made for more than one car.

It was a shame to break up the stone top of the island. Being a scavenger, I would have tried scoring the top before breaking it in half. Once I had smaller pieces, they would have been repurposed as smaller out-door table tops or as hard flat surfaces as was shown with the sink cut-out from the new quartz top.

I’ve been slowly swapping out my halogen lights for LED lights, they’re a lot cooler. I too have a large bay window in front of the sink but it’s a pain to reach into so I have plans to replace mine when I get the time. Too bad that island countertop was busted up since it could’ve been used by someone somewhere. I’ve cut down many stone or solid surface countertops using just an abrasive masonry blade on a circular saw. I’ve even repurposed concrete sidewalk slabs using the same method, using a fan to blow the dust away and side doweled rebar for alignment…much like biscuits. I’ve never understood why anyone would pay such high prices for kitchen cabinets when they’re so easy to make. My dad was a cabinetmaker back in the 60’s & 70’s, making custom stuff for the rich in Palm Springs CA while living in Henderson NV (near Las Vegas) but I can assure you anyone can build cabinets, even me…an ironworker.

We don't have shingles here in Australia either. Mostly cement or terracotta tiles, or like corrugated iron type.

It really does brighten up the space. I did the same thing at my place. I have very dark wood cabinet almost like a brown/red ish. And the white quartz countertop really brighten the space and made it look way better. I also changed hardware for a more modern style and it really helped and only cost like 200$ to do. On another note, here where i live in canada, its really common to refinish/repaint the cabinets. It gives it a 2nd life. You could probably have them painted light grey or event do a contrast with a darker grey on the island and the pantry cabinet/wall oven cabinets. Its way cheaper (here like 3500$ CAD to have someone professionally refinish them way cheaper than spending 20k on new cabinets. Anyway great video and sorry for the long comment, cheers🍻
We thought this side job would be easy!
