I built a pantry AND an office in my kitchen!
Join EriK for another home renovation project at his house where he adds some much needed storage and organizational workspace to his sunroom. This project includes the framing, drywall, built-ins, and shelving to turn a waste of space into a very functional area for the home.

As a remodeler and renovator ... I primarily work solitary from the demolition to the initial build to the finish work .... drywall, tile, trim, paint EVERYTHING. I read the entire Ryan's kzbin.infoUgkxGqOCINHE0Z0E5gxzSdNi9NWGugRY5Hm2 Plans and was able to make a shed plan. Using Ryan's Shed Plans alone, the shed itself is great. Where I wish I knew more is with respect to ground preparation and foundations. Maybe that's beyond the scope of Ryan's Shed Plans.

FYI The drag marks in the drywall mud we’re caused by a dirty knife (dried/clumps of mud) Clean the knife off after each pull by just wiping it on the edge of your pan. Also helps to have a bucket of water handy to clean tools as you go as well.

Top Tip - When using a Tile drill bit like the one you were using, get a wet sponge, and hold it up against a side of the drill bit, keeps the bit cool and covered in water (y)

Pro tip: Profiling the baseboard molding is easier when you back cut it with the 45 facing the painted side then follow the paint line with a coping saw. It will be perfect fit not needing caulk. ;o)

The black tubes on the shelves above the desk are supposed to go inside the shelves. You are supposed to drill holes and slide the brackets inside so the shelves look like floating.

hey man just a pro tip, wet the tape in a water pale, use regular lightweight compound and add a litle water until its creamy peanut butter, use a 6 inch knife and a 12" dont use a tray with 45 mud it kicks the exothermic reaction faster

Oh..... Also...... Big stretch works wonders for filling drywall Gap! I did it to my own house, because I was planning to put crown moulding along the ceiling anyway. 3 years later, looks like the rest of the finished sheetrock, and I still have not installed crown moulding. I may never install it 🤣

Erik your mud was to thick and the lines in your mud is from putting mud back in your trough that had pieces of gypsum in it … use a 4”-6” knife to start moving to 8”-12” to finish … overall great job ….I have all the Milwaukee nailers and have no problems I’d contact Milwaukee for help I’m sure they will help you and maybe send you some freebies because of your channel…. I have 6 - 24’ trailers filled with Milwaukee and DeWalt tools I seem to get good service from both … worth a try for sure … Keep up the quality work

Sometimes the mud will dry up on your blade if you leave it on too long and can cause those gouges when you pass back over the work. Im not a pro spackler but i have learned to keep my blades clean and if needed to literally go clean them off with water often. Loved the video

It really helps to thin out the mud for skim coats. The constancy of thick cake batter or pancake batter. Also look out for chunks in the mud that causes tool marks.

Drag marks are from dirty mud!!! Clean your knife off after EVERY swipe along the wall and keep it clean... otherwise it will dry into little dinggle berries and you will get those drag marks and you will never get away from them! Great build!

This is HUGELY inspirational. I am going to construct a temporary pantry in our kitchen similar to this one, except I'm going to use OSB instead of drywall. It's going to serve its purpose perfectly well until we re-do our kitchen. When we do, we purchased sections of wooden bowling lanes to use on our countertops!

The next guy that wants to renovate that kitchen is going to hate you for building that pantry on top of the tile. Speaking from experience lol. Also a pro-tip about tile/glass drilling. Take a bit of modeling clay or something and make a little bowl around the hole you're about to drill. Fill it with water and drill away. Not only will it keep down the dust (silica dust is no joke), but it'll also cool the bit and prevent cracking.

A little pro tip. You can actually put Joy dishwashers liquid in the compound and mix it good. It will eliminate trash in the mud and it makes it easier to work for a smooth finish.

This was super entertaining!! Love seeing Erik try mudding and taping for the first time. Definitely the mud was too thick from the get-go. Also, when using paper tape with quickset (hot mud), I follow Vancouver Carpenter's tip to mix in all-purpose glue with the water to increase adhesion and strength with the paper tape.

Hey Eric, Often commercial drywall wizards use j-channel at the top of a connecting sheet of drywall. Also, use j-channel on the vertical wall joints. You can use a tiny bead of silicone on the joint if you wish. The j-channel adds a finished look.

You can have the nailers serviced. Every so often you need to have them serviced so they stay in good working condition. I’m not far from you and lumber yards like Henson lumber in Forest city will have them serviced.

Tip for scribing skirting boards, put an internal miter on the board and then follow the line of the miter with a coping saw.

Hey y'all, just wanted to pass this tip I picked while putting drywall up in a our newly remodeled home. Use a hawk and a 4 inch blade when putting on your first coat of joint compound. Use one edge of the hawk to clean excess "clean" mud off the blade for reuse and another edge (preferably away from your clean mud) to scrape off any "bad" mud. This will help you stay clean and ensure that you always put on a smooth coat which will limit sanding. Once that has dried, go back with a 6" blade using the same approach. You can then go back with wider blades if you need to fill wider areas (outside corners, butt joints). Three passes may seem like a lot, but it will keep your house much cleaner and limit the amount of sanding needed. Keep up the great work and keep the content coming!

I would recommend coping baseboard in that scenario vs scribing. You will have a much cleaner finish with less work.

The new M18 15/16 gauge has been a huge improvement! My 15 gauge (DA) no longer leaves nasty holes, no kickback & isn’t as clunky. Worth the upgrade!

Protip for finishing the mud, my dad taught me this one, go over it with a wet sponge once it's dried a little bit. Much easier and cleaner than sanding, and you get the same finish :)

Since we moved in to our house 15 years ago, I meant to build some wardrobes in the main bedroom. My wife keeps reminding me every 6 months so it's getting annoying. I think I'll copy what you did here, and use plasterboard (dry-wall) outside rather than plywood. This was a great episode, very entertaining. You guys are very skilled and good fun :)

" PRO TIP" Never lick your finger to smooth out caulk. The bacteria from your saliva creates mold in the caulk. Build in looks awesome 👍

I’ve done the caulking the wall to another wall just like that with no issues before it does help out with not having to put another inside corner paper tape and worrying about re-texturing and all that. You should be fine. And for mounting the 2 x 4 to the wall with the Lexan like you did, another way of doing that is putting some of those big butterfly anchors through the 2 x 4 and threw the sheet rock of the existing wall. And that holds pretty well also. Just pre-drill the holes where it’s needed and install the butterflies on the 2 x 4 and push them through the pre-drilled holes on the existing wall and tighten them down. That seems to work very well. I never had an issue doing it that way, and I’ve been doing it that way for plenty of years. Specially small add-ons like for instance your pantry or a small closet etc. But I do also use a liquid nail or some thing like what you used that Lexan

Yea brother I've built for houses for 33 year's in South Carolina and always subcontracted that out the drywall. but I have done it several times before and wait for it. It always came out wait for it again Not to good especially for a client's home and mine either. I've been putting off building a closet for about five years now, to turn a (former) home office into a bedroom. Thanks for the inspiration..., ask me in another five if I've started it yet! To answer your unasked question, my garage is two cars wide, but one side is also two cars deep. I built a wall, insulated, sheetrocked, paint & texture, and now I've got a man-cave to kill for. Took about six months of planning, adaptation and work, but it was worth it.

When you make holes in tiles you must: 1. reduce rotation speed at the minimum 2. use water during drilling I use one tile drill all my entire life.
