I think your critique was spot on! I mentioned in one of my videos that the features don't align with the cost. I can't imagine it would be difficult to include an app that allows you to customize/monitor everything. That alone would really improve the setup. I immediately modified the substrate, even from the initial setup. I too had issues with gnats in three different scapes. I thought maybe it wouldn't happen with the second and third, but it did. Mosquito bits does the trick. Not sure if it's due to the wacky setups I do or the plants I use, but I've found it necessary to mist daily. If I skip even one day my mosses and ferns start to take a hit. I don't have any of these issues in my DIY setups that include specialty plants (ie. Begonia amphioxus or micro orchids). In my mind the product is still somewhat of a prototype. There's potential, but it has many shortcomings. That said it does look awesome.

Wow Kaylee you really delivered on this one! So glad to have people like you giving us a solid Review. I feel like there are no review videos on BiOrb. Most of them are from people that show how to set it up and how to use it. But knowing you have had this for a year now really is reassuring! By the way, THE TEE IS HAWT SIS! 💅🏻

Dart frog keepers are your best friend for information on larger glass, 90-99% humidity and well ventilated terrarium builds. A lot of folks are big fans of the biopod- but like the BiOrb its extremely expensive. Honestly, when you're dealing with species that have super specific requirements- you're not really going to find a 'all-in-one' set up, and with just a days worth of research; you can literally build a huge and extremely customisable European style glass terrarium (which are MUCH prettier and functional in my opinion) and make it totally ready for varying environmental parameters. The BiOrb seems like the iPhone of terrariums, It's overpriced, popular, unnecessarily hard to customize but it looks cool. Honestly (this might just be the cheap handyman in me talking) it seems like it would be better to make your own terrarium, cause then you can customize EVERYTHING.

🌓Hey Kaylee how are you doing love? First I want to say thank you for all your hard work, for sharing your knowledge of plants and being very authentic. I have been watching your videos for quite some time but never commented until now, I needed you to know that I have throughly enjoyed your channel, I have truly appreciated you just being you, that to me means so much because I have found that being authentic on YT is really not all that popular, and that’s a shame. I told my husband about you and your channel and shop and we are so excited to know we can purchase great plants from someone that is honest with their customers. We are in Alabama for now but moving to Florida very soon, and we know that we have to wait to base on the stipulations of shipping to the U.S. but as soon as that is lifted we will be placing our order. Also I wanna to just love on you and say be encouraged and I know you are a very hard worker, but please don’t forget to take some time out for you. If you are doing that already that’s great, but if not please love on yourself as much as you love on your plants. Sometimes we can get so busy and forget about ourselves and may need a little reminder to stop and give yourself some me time. I want you to know that you are appreciated that you are needed, you are impacting lives on some many different levels all over the world. You are amazing, wise beyond your years, you have a beautiful soul, you have a sweet spirit, you are not a quitter, you love hard and long but if someone cross you, that’s it. Lol. You Kaylee are a special young lady and don’t do well when someone tries to put you in a box, you are truly a fighter and just know I am cheering you on, praying for you and your family, you have more with you than against you love. Always remember sweetie when there are days that seem a bit rough, The Most High Yah got your back. Remain in your peace. Much love to you. Oh I almost forgot to ask, if you could do a video on removing the plants from biorb air? I would love to see the breakdown of this. Kaylee I pray you are encouraged by this comment. And that you have a wonderful weekend.🙋🏾‍♀️🦋💞🌸

I've also had my biorb for about a year and the only problem I've run into is the mist unit. It stopped working entirely a few months ago and had to be replaced. I contacted OASE, sent them a video showing the problem, and they immediately sent me out a replacement at no cost. So I certainly can't fault them on their customer service. I LOOOOOVE my biorb but I always describe it to people as a terrarium for dummies. If I were more experienced and technologically minded, I'd probably go with an in-situ (and probably will eventually in addition to my orb) but as far as keeping my plants alive and looking GORGEOUS, I can't beat it. I've got it packed to the brim with plants and they are all growing and flowering and looking spectacular. ETA: I have it packed with jewel orchids, ferns, marcgravia, selaginella, tiny syngonium and episcia.

After listening to your review it doesn’t really seem like the product is worth the price. It should definitely have more features to it. I still feel like you have to do a lot of work or buy special products for it. I would rather take that money and buy more plants lol or growlights.

I could see the orb being nice for carnivorous plants especially since you don’t need to fertilize them and the fact that gnats can get in is actually a plus. Not to mention that, in my experience, they have shallower root systems so the mat wouldn’t be so dangerous
@mrparts
@mrparts 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. This terrarium was never designed for large or tall plants,. That’s the mistake of the reviewer. When I saw the first video when she put anthuriums and other large fast growing plants inside, it was obvious it would not work. Plants would be too close to the LEDs and burn themselves, and roots systems would plug the bottom. This system is for small slow growing plants that don’t need fertilizer.

Hey Kaylee, loved this system for the past few years and got to see one as well when it first came and have been using all other Oase products. There's a similar product by ADA called the paluda series that's already in the Asian market and there was the biopod which you're well aware of it in the past. Of course none of them are globular but they are automated systems. There are also few american brands such as the exoterra systems which is widely used for housing miniature plants as well as miniature creatures. There are also few OEM based brands from Taiwan and China with self sustaining systems that have been in market in countries such as Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam for the past few years. Loved the video, hope to see more updates on this and your new biorb.

Thought I give my two cents into this terrarium discussion. :) I've used an old aquarium for my terrarium project. It was free and wanted to test the technology that I would like to have. Judging by my experience I might actually go in future with vivarium setting, which is common among orchid hobbyist here in Finland (called orchidarium). I have a water reservoir for about 40 liters and a waterfall to keep the humidity up as I prefer the tank to have a good ventilation. Most ventilation systems, I found, couldn't handle the humidity, so I kept the lid open slightly to prevent any condensation, mold, etc. To occur. Easier than replacing the fans every now and then. To add humidity, I have an extra terrarium fogger to pump it up when needed. So to have something ready as a package like biorb, I haven't seen. Most do their own mods and builds. Thus my current setup is for testing things, especially waterplant fertilisers, as I was planning to have shrimps and otos there. Now the build is on hold since covid. Let's see when I would resume it. There have been plants inside for about half a year now and doing well. For example I have carnivorous plants, sundews, to pick the gnats. It actually selfseeded and now having the 2nd gen doing the heavy lifting (no gnats! Ha) Hope you'll find the perfect set-up for your project. With aroids, I might go with custom vivarium that is tall, more like a big bookcase. Which could allow building a greenwall type of system and to have water pumped up and then dribling down for the irrigation. I've actually borrowed loads of piping hacks from my aquarium hobby. I use aquarium lights as well, since they have so many options to choose how dim or bright, what time schedule one would like to have for the day length, etc. Just like my computer - like to build one from scratch. -M

To be fair, I had scratches in 3 spots around the orb - Not sure if the reviewer know this, but Oase sells a kit for about $8 US - it has a polishing paste and pads. Took about 15 mins all my scratches are gone and it looks like brand new again. I've had my Orb for over a year with no issues except one mister port seems stronger than the other, but aside from this, I'm still very happy with mine.

I adore this detailed review, it mentions both positive and negative things about the product. I remember hearing this company being dunked on in the aquarium community. This sounds like a good product if it were sold at the 50USD-150USD price mark, but certainly not the almost 400USD mark. At least not until the things you mention get fixed. I only say this cause these setups remind me of the ones for dart frogs/geckos/other humidity loving pets, but the setups in those communities can be done for cheaper than the Biorb. Also, I want to mention serpadesign for some terrarium setups for plants and any dart frog setups.

Nice video full of details and honest, well explained opinions, thanks! I am an orchid grower and considering the dimension of this Orb, I'd never put an Aroid there: those things grow tall! However, I'd like to mention that the irrigation system (capillary mat) only works for terrestrial plants, any epiphyte plant would have no access to the water reservoir and hence would need to be misted regularly. This also means that the terrarium won't be fully automatic anymore.
@serpentsempra9051
@serpentsempra9051 3 жыл бұрын
I‘ve had one for over a month and had good success with a Begonia Amphioxus-a reasonably fussy plant. I did use my own aroid mix to start with and it seems to have worked so far. Kaylee I’d advise removing the tape from the lid and putting it on the inside of the orb itself. As the light has spread out more by this point, it doesn’t burn through. It may end up leaving some residue behind as the tape still heats up a bit but it works well as long as you use electrical tape or something similar. I was just going to rewire the lights replacing every other light with the appropriate capacitor but this seemed like a lot of effort. The acrylic does scratch very easily. As long as appropriate adjustments are made it can work alright for slower growing and rare aroids as long as they are small. Only put rarer aroids in it if you have a good way of caring for them when it outgrows it as the humidity does seem to be around 85% and some plants can die from humidity shock if outside the biorb is no higher than say 55%. I have experienced some saprophytic fungus due to the soil being oversaturated water/air circulation being not high enough so I would recommend not using the low fan setting as it doesn’t seem to regulate airflow enough. I intend to build my own terrarium in the future with a cylindrical shape as this will allow plants to climb and allows larger aroids such as queen anthuriums and strap leaf anthuriums to grow. Overall if it was at a price of around £225 or less then I would recommend it however due to the price, lack of functionality and maintainability I would not recommend buying the current version of the Biorb Air 60.

Hmmm I'm glad I didn't grab one of these. I have an obliqua and when I was researching these I didn't like the lack of all the control. It's funny that this orb doesn't come with an app. Fluval lights all come with a gorgeous app and they're in a cheaper price point, so it's weird that the orb didn't come with one. I am actually planning on making my own "biorb". I've bought two used oase aquarium orbs for cheaps and taken them apart for the plastic bubble to make my own custom terrarium.

Great review. I almost bought a Biorb but went with an exo-terra instead. With a few additions it was very easy to make it almost fully automatic (with the exception if humidity control, but I have found it easy to maintain a high humidity level). It’s just not as aesthetically pleasing as the Biorb, I will admit. I also had success in controlling fungus gnats by sprinkling some Mosquito Bits onto the substrate.

Short and sweet: wait for competative models that is better, or at least more price worthy that you can adapt more to what plants you wanna use by being able to decide what settings is best. Options is the key. I was thinking about getting this for carnivorous plants, but the lights being to strong for even your aroids makes me think they would be soggy, sad, burnt compost very quickly. For your new terrarium light, may I recommend that you look at the Fluval plant 3.0 and the Fluval Nano. Both are available through Aquarium Co-op (not sponsored). The fluvial lights make excellent terrarium lights. They are remarkably controllable through a phone app and they come in several different sizes. The one down side that I have found is that you have to connect your phone to the light (over wi-Fi) after a power outage, otherwise it will not restart. Cheers, Chris

Crazy that is doesn't have a humidity readout! Just as crazy that you cannot easily access the water reservoir! Is 'Mosquito Bits' something you can get your hands on over there? I use it sprinkled on my soil and sometimes soaked in my watering can so that the bacteria gets into the soil, and fungus gnat larvae try to eat it and then can't eat anything else. They starve to death -- I've gotten to the point where I only ever see 1 or 2 gnats in the room at any time, but to be fair I'm not using it consistently so it's probably my fault!

Unfortunately in the uk they are ridiculously expensive and consequently not widely used or recommended. I normally use nematodes when I’ve got a gnat problem!

Hey I’ve had mine for about three months now all the plants are doing great but I have had a problem with the misters. I’ve also had a problem with fungus gnats I tried the yellow sticky tape for a while and then I decided to put mosquito bites inside on top of the soil which I do not recommend because now I have mold growing on the top of the soil

mosquito bits work great at eliminating fungus knats. I have used it in my terrariums and got rid of all the knats easily. Just sprinkle some in and mix with the top inch of soil and your knat problem will disappear :)

Any terrariums with a heat mat attached to a thermostat for temperature control, a light bulb at 6500K attached to a timer and a misting system with a diaphragm pump attached to a timer with second interval setting will do a much better job than this orb.

I was left looking after an Orb during lockdown and I completely agree. The coco coir isn't the right substrate as it eventually gets extremely moist and creates the perfect habitat for pests. My friends' Monstera Adansonii has been loving the humidity and has put lots of growth in a short period of time. However, it's now suffering from something like whiteflies. For this price you should definitely have more control over the orbs' environment. Any small flying pests could travel freely in and out :(

Thanks for sharing. I think I'll stick with my low tech terrariums, especially with the price of the orb. My terrariums are low maintenance even for watering, and you can add a short strand of fairy lights for ambiance.

Have you tried BTI/Gnatrol from fungus gnats? It's a godsend, I tip a teaspoon full into a 10l bag of potting mix and the gnats are dead within a week. I add it to my watering can and water the plants, tip a tiny bit onto the potting mix when I see any adults about.

For the tape, you could try aluminum heat tape! its built to be on hot surfaces without damage. Still would be way better if light level could be adjusted without tape but hey

Did you try spraying the plants with watered down dish soap for the pest to go away? I don't know how good it is for the orb, but it's what we do over here in Sweden for fruit flies. Hehe. Also great video! You've made me want to wait until there's more versions of this on the market or make my own instead of throwing down this much money on something that might not work in the long run.

Have you ever used neem cake with your potting mix or Mosquito Bites for controlling the Gnat flies? I would cover those air intakes with a fine screen. Have you tried Duck tape over the LEDs?

Thank you so much for this review. I did want this, but for the price I don't think the cons are worth it for me. I can make a paladarium with more reliable equipment and probably spend the same or less, using products designed for aquarium and reptile keeping. By the way, there are kits to buff out scratches on acrylic aquariums, which should work on the bio orb unless the manual for it says otherwise.

You could definitely compare this orb to “all in one” fishtanks at similar price points. For $450 this has a woefully small amount of needed features. Those AIO fishtanks are basically just wet terrariums.

Personally I’m looking into buying a wardian case as large as they go and outfitting it with a mister, lights, and humidity meter.

Anything above 80 Euro sounds like a rip-off to me. Their margin must be insane. Would be cool to build something custom in there with some "basic" plants.

Maybe a crazy idea: Would Kew gardens be a good place to look for advice on terrarium? They've got lots of plants in these settings, all kinds of weird and wonderful. They may have experience they might be prepared to share with you?

I’ve been researching tree frog enclosures a lot lately. You’d be surprised by the things I’m seeing in bioactive vivariums. Aroids flourish in those things. You can even set up your own listing and light timers. A big ole giant enclosure I can get for less than 200 bucks here. I mean big and tall too. I’ve been thinking of the bio orb, but now I might just do a bio active vivarium for way cheaper. 🤷‍♀️

Excellent review! I was thinking to get this orb for my jewel orchids, but it sounds like not suitable for them. I was shocked to hear, that this does not have app or anything to properly adjust controls. I much rather built my own terrarium with automation with Arduino or something, since price is much lower and I get full control. Also that misting water thing sounds unnecessary, water level can be measured much better way...

What I got from this. I feel they should give a customizable orb. Make the shape to ur liking (ofc a fixed types of shape available ) for different plants, allow different setting for everything part of the system (humidifier, light, ect....), a better watering system, and a way for the orb to sustain itself if something goes wrong/malfunction so that you can save it before it is too late ( for just a few days or weeks)

Have you considered poison dart frogs? They might help fertilize and minimize the gnat problem. Of course frogs have specific needs too but I’m pretty sure this product might fill those needs nicely.
