If you are looking for a LR3 Land Rover, then watch this first! Or, if you are simply wanting to know what common issues the LR3 has, stay tuned. The LR3, or Land Rover Discovery 3, is actually a pretty solid SUV that is built to last a very long time. Of course, since its land rover, there is issues. However, the issues, in my opinion, arent all that bad.

Accurate information. I have 230,000 miles on my 2006 LR3 SE V8 and 14 years of ownership. Keep it from over heating by changing plastic cooling system/thermostat parts before they break and avoid gas with ethanol.

Seems like once it overheats, you are in for a lot of trouble. Keeping things in great shape is important. I've seen these motors last well over 400k, but that doesn't include the maintenance folks like you put in.

What would be wonderful, if you are able to, is to talk about the parts we can borrow from the LR4 or things we can incorporate, I don't have the parking sensors on the LR3 for example so bumper replacement, back up cameras and so on, etc... Just for the record, I got the control arm issue from what you mentioned, and the timing belt, it is an expensive fit because they have to remove the engine and the compressor and sensors, still for leveling issues 🤔... Thanks for the video.

Because it's my money and I enjoy land rovers and i sold my patrol to get one. Best decision ever. Enjoy the offroading much more un the land rover. My stock discovery is more capable than my 4.5 patrol was. The smaller 2.5 remapped Td5 outruns the patrol and is lighter on fuel. Much more comfortable on very long distance trips and i can even drive past gas stations without having to fill up.

Bought an LR3 with 140K on the clock for my wife in 2016. Great car for sure but I'd like to say a couple of things too this video. 1) They don't have a problem over heating. Coolant system failures are inevitable. The real problem with the LR3 is the cooling system design. A huge plastic (a55holes5) thermostat housing that always fails and a water pump gasket design that's problematic. AC Delco redesigned the pump and it's a winner! 2) The issue with the diff's is that they get moisture into them. Top that off with the fact that the factory claims long service intervals. Reduced that to 12 months max! 3) My wife doesn't care about going off road so I converted to coil. 4) If not going to coil on your used LR3, replacing the compressor isn't a bad idea at all. 5) If the truck starts taking longer to change levels, keep backups for all of the fuses related to the air compressor system and plan to replace the compressor. If you end up in the Disco squat (the truck sitting on it's but and won't rise back up) before you get a new compressor, check those fuses! Her's now has 210K on it and it still rocks! I've replaced all of the pulleys, belts, coolant lines, and an alternator. Still an awesome car in the snow and the motor is still pretty damn awesome. If you don't mind turning a wrench, these are great cars.
@sarahdell4042
@sarahdell4042 11 ай бұрын
Does the thermostat housing just fail and instantly overheat? Or is the gauge accurate and you can shut it down in time?
@terrencecox3748
@terrencecox3748 11 ай бұрын
@@sarahdell4042 You don't see catastrophic failures of the housing. The issues are parts quality and design. That said, what you see are leaks. Over long periods of time they crack. Normally where they are secured to the engine. Tightening more just makes the crack worse. The big takeaway where the the thermostat housing is concerned is to buy the best quality part you can afford. Lastly, if there is anything that does fail catastrophically in the cooling system it's the bleed valve. Replace that with a brass part that will last for the rest of time. Atlantic British carries them.

seriously this entire video is a joke, you have no idea what signs or what generally fails or just wear's out on a discovery . 1st in the engine, oil pump if you have a old style 1 it will need to be changed otherwise the bearing it runs on will fail and when it does the engine is only fit for the bin simple as that. 2 glow plugs will cost you a bomb if they get stuck on removal 9/10 times they will get stuck. 3. crankshafts have a issue on snapping at low revvs and also the crankshaft bearing spin causing the outer shell to dissolve not good. 4. main boost pipe tends to split causing insane amounts of black smoke. faily easy fix.. 5..both egr valves become blocked and will need replacing costing alot of money if this happens a egr blank can be bought for cheap to block out the egr's but in the uk its a MOT fail unless you no a quiet mate. 6 turbo do have a tend to die which will also cost a bomb to replace..7.. discovery 3 don't like cold starts at all and when you do start it up and the revvs are making the needle jump up and down basically means injectors or glow plugs need looking at doesnt mean there bad becuase it could be a eletrical fault with ethier glow plugs or injectors. AIR SUSPENSION. 1. yes the air pump/compressor do die i had 2 die on me but if this happens just buy original 1 if you cant go cheap but trust me there loud as hell, if you are finished with air suspension just buy coils to replace the old 1's.. 2. after a long time the air dryer beeds become very small and sometimes become powder over time and what happens the powder get sucked into the air lines and that blocks up and clogs the air blocks theres 3 of them yeah they can fail can be expensive to replace and fairly easy to find and remove. CONTROL ARMS AND HUBS..1.. yeah its easier to replace the front lower arms than trying to replace the bushing on them if you do replace them buy the original arms or very very good make otherwise you'll be spending alot of money at a garage replacing them again about 2-3 years later..2.. front wheel hubs its soo much easier to replace the whole hub over trying to replace the bearings the front hubs do wear out quiet often depending on the make of front hub you buy. if your alright with tools and have some time it can be done i did mine yesterday.. BRAKE LINES.. brake lines on the discovery 3 depending its age they do rust and become more often seen on uk MOT'S.. RUST.. especially on lower door sills can be a pain and across the whole can spots can creep up especially underneath at the suspension mounts but with a bit of treatment its alright. TRACKING.. if you have tracking issues with your discovery join in with us it is more common for the tracking to be out a small bit or quite alot on this trucks so dont think its just yours mines be in for tracking 2 times..GEARBOX.. i can only speak for AUTO gearboxes here if you ever fell juddering or if the engine has to revv higher for it to change gears then its about time you had your gearbox flushed.. not just a oil change but a flush its important if you want it to last during the flushing a flushing machine hooks up to your D3 and forces gearbox oil into the box and flushes the old oil out and aswell behind the torque converter unlike a normal oil change on the gearbox it just doesn't do it justice. and replaces with new oil landrover say its a lifetime oil in gearboxes ITS NOT nothing last forever.. FRONT DIFF'S if you hear a wine quite or loud them most properly its the main bearings wearing thin and on there way out yes you can have bearings replaced but generally got to have it sent off or most 4x4 garages here will just replace your broken one with a new 1 straight out and the old 1 will get sent the company who sent you the new 1 ( makes it cheaper for the garages to buy it).. if you haven't changed to the oils in your diffs they will need changing eventually again no oil last for ever, also check your brether pipe on your front diff, your diff isnt full to the top so it needs breathing especially if you drive through rivers and flooded areas......THINGS I DO WITh MY DISCOVERY 3. engine oil and filter gets changed every 6 months regardless of miles,, fuel filter and air filter and pollen filter once a year try not to cheap out guys. tyre pressure checks once a week helps fuel consumption and better for your tyres. engine coolant cheeks once a month if needs topping up top up same as windscreen wash. and also same as brake fluid but mines been changed twice since owning the truck....discovery 3 and 4's are a high maintenance trucks and are absolutely great to own and i love mine they will last a very long time if they are looked after properly.....i have a D3 2.7 tdv6....also forgot to say the turbo, all 3 belts, oil pump will require body off which will cost a bomb at a garage YES some things can be done with body on but that wont happen at a garage when they can just take it off and do it properly.....hope this helps
