I wish I could have started with a 7 string instead of a 6 string. The band that made me play guitar was Korn, and I listen to lots of bands who played 7 strings. For my younger self it would make me play more, and give that gratification of playing the songs I love the way they were intended. Also I think people should try to start as close as their dream guitar as they can, so if you're dream guitar is a 9 string, you should buy that (but starting with a 9 string is guaranteed to give you a hard time).

About hardcase I think exactly the opposite. At home I prefer hardcases ! Because it's easier to store (you can put 10 hardcase upon each others and it's ok for the guitars) and keep them away from everything. And if I need to move somewhere with my guitar (and mostly if I dont take the car -> Paris life...). I prefer gigbag because it's less heavy, you can wear it on your shoulders...

Thanks Patrick- I'll think about it, but really, I'm just a meat and potatoes, or one trick pony type of guy when it comes to amps. I've really only been playing the same amp for 20+ years, and so I don't have a lot of experience with different amps. Thus, my perspective might not be that great unfortunately!

I only swapped to EMG's 81/85 because I know I love them. Just picked up a New Epiphone Silver Burst custom Les Paul. I love it. Only the Pick ups sound Odd to me. I know for most though they sound great still lol.

Sounds like you jammed your new Epiphone for a bit AND THEN discovered that the pickups sound weird to you, which is kind of the point I was trying to make. Plus, you have a frame of reference because you already have experience with EMG's. So in this case, swap on my friend!

hey Rob great video :) for lowtuning i use 6 string Baritones, dont like 7 strings... and when you wanna play low you can buy a 7 string yes but if the scale lengh is the same like in a 6 string (25,5) etc. you`ve the same problems as well. maybe you make a video about that :) best wishes from austria

I own 4 guitars right now - only a non professional guy who plays in a cover band about 5 gigs a year / pre-covid... I bought all 4 in the same store after tyring out several guitars. I would say when you pick a guitar up the first time you somehow immediately feel if it fits you or not. Bought them between 2001 and 2018. Its an Ibanez Standard Strat to start out with. An Jackson Rhoads RX10, an Jackson King V Pro and an Jackson Soloist SLATXMG. Price range between I think 300€ for the Ibanez to 850€ for the King V. I now ordered an ESP LTD Alexi 600 Greeny without touching the guitar before buying as its currently not available. Im quite nervous at the moment as its the most expensive one I probably will ever buy and at the same time I never played an ESP at all. Hope it goes well... :D

im with you on getting a guitar in the middle of the road. I also like to get a lower end guitar so i can pull some mechanics on it. Besides playing guitar I also love learning about the guitar as well. SO I'll keep my playing guitar that cost be 6-7-800 dollars alone to play... This is a great video for people wanting to get into playing guitar. I absolutely agree with everything. And I think some of the points you made are a lot like your salting your food before you try it analogy. The only one thing I would say is I think a 24.75 inch scale length is going to be a little easier to play than a 25.5 inch scale for a beginner. 24.75 inch scale is what I started on for that reason. And after about a year I graduated to a 25.5 inch scale. And I use the 24.75 inch scale mainly for standard tunings but nothing lower than drop D. And the 25.5 inch scale is anything drop C to drop A. Great video though lots of knowledge and great perspective.

I agree its silly to buy a guitar planning to do a bunch of mods on it, with one exception. Tuning heads. My first good guitar was a gibson les paul deluxe that I bought new in 1969. That guitar inspired me to play all the time and started a lifelong love of playing. But the tuning heads were these cheap plastic things that rusted and were easily bent. After a couple years I bit the bullet and installed schaller heads and it made the guitar so much better. In 1974 i bought a stratocaster new and it had these dinky tuning heads that were sticky and sucked. Replaced the heads and that is still my #1 guitar to this day. Im constantly surprised at the lousy tuning heads that come on decent guitars. Thats the one modification i might make to a new guitar.

@@RobArnoldWorld I must say that I took a chance and bought a fender duo sonic player series online. The duo sonic was only made from 1954 to 1956, intended to be between the tele and strat. I was looking at a mustang for a kick around kind of grunge guitar when I saw the duo sonic re issue. It had two pickups and the bridge pickup is switchable from single to dual coil so i was sold. Price was about $600 complete. I had never bought a guitar sight unseen, but it played great and sounded great right out of the box. And surprise! The tuners were better than the ones that came on my older guitars like jazzmaster, ES-335 and others bought in the 70s and 80s. Keep up the good work brother, you are filling a need.

It was setup flawlessly by myself 😎 Now out of nowhere, possibly related to the wife knocking it over, I'm getting fret buzz on the 5th fret on the low b and low e 😐 Question is should I start with the truss rod? or just redo the entire setup?

Great points to consider. I've been playing for about 20 years and started out on a cheap strat style. After about a year or so I moved to a "V" because my idols played V's. My biggest seller for any shape guitar regardless of components is comfort. When you're comfortable, the music flows. 🤘🤘

Some nice tips there Rob. One thing I say to anyone and that is never buy a second hand Guitar. Lets just say that it'll cost you a lot more to get it fixed that what you payed for it. I found that out with my first guitar which was a Les Paul. It need a new volume tone and the neck was out and it also needed a new pick up. Which in the end costed a lot of money. It's best to look round any guitar shop and pay a bit more in the end. Let I did when I bought my BC Rich Warlock. As you said go mid range and try the guitar out at the guitar shop. By using different amps. That's what I did. And ask the person in the guitar shop about what would be right amp to suit the guitar that your going to buy. I find that to be a real help. Plus always ask about the brand of strings that came with the guitar, so the you'll know what strings to buy next. As in the Gage.

I can't argue with that! Although if you buy a used instrument through a reputable seller, that has hopefully done quality checks on the guitar, often times you can score a quality instrument at an affordable price. But yes, there are always horror stories such as you experienced Darren!🎸

Speaking of hard cases. Keep it closed when your guitar is in it. I had a one off custom esp horizon and tipped over a floor lamp at practice. The glass lamp shade landed on it with the case open and chipped it through the paint down to bare wood 🤦‍♂️ my band mates are lucky they didn’t tip over the lamp 😆

I’m going to throw a curve ball here lol I started on a 6 string baritone 27.5 scale B E A D F# B. Reason being all chords shapes are the same as standard tuning just a 4th lower. Really fell in love with metal and wanted to start a band. I know you obviously know and talk too a lot of people but I think at some point you talked my friend and ex band mate Carl French from England. I know he mentioned he had talked too you st some point. Anyway he sent you some of our tracks and your mentioned you liked them. Which still to this day I really appreciate and made it all worth while. That album was absolutely fantastic I used too sing along all the time. That period of my life and album were great. Good question! I feel like I keep picks around forever. I've got them set in spots all over the lab, so I can quickly reach for one when I need one. I'll typically grab a brand new one whenever I'm about to record something important. On tour though, it was brand new picks all the time. 🎸

Do you own any battery powered guitars? Also how do i stop my whammy bar from falling out? We've tried a few things but they haven't worked

Do you mean a guitar with active pickups that require a battery? Or do you mean a guitar with one of those built in speakers? Whammy bar falling out sounds like a bridge issue... perhaps with the contact points failing in the bridge or the bar itself, or a combination of both. What type of bridge is it?

Sick video. I was looking to get in on a Jackson Warrior for about $300-$400, is that still too low of a price to get in the mid range side of things?

That price is definitely on the low end, but I believe in a company like Jackson. Perhaps that Warrior will serve you well. But if you do begin to experience issues, at least you'll then have a frame of reference for when it comes time to make your next move.

Another thing I found out the hard way.. don’t buy a guitar online that you’ve never played in person before. Whether it be a vintage Les Paul or a brand new whatever, play it before you buy it. There’s so many neck shapes out there. Some gloss necks feel better than other ones. Some guitars may have neck dives, you could go on and on.. just a thought 💭

I agree! Guitars, furniture, tools, etc... Always best to get a feel for them in the store if possible, then buy wherever you can get the best price!

Totally agree. I bought a Jackson Kelly because I love that Hetfield/Explorer look but for me, personally.. It's so uncomfortable to play.

Nowadays you can buy an entry level Jackson or LTD and they are very playable and sound good.

I've gone into a guitar shop to buy a Gibson and walked out with a Telecaster, my reason is simple and Rob you touched on it perfectly in the start the guitar needs to inspire you and "talk to you". I'll take a few guitars and the one that feels like it fuels my creativity is the one I buy, its not always the most expensive one.

Hell, you should never ever get a cheap guitar, you get the 400 or 500 dollar guitar. You get crap, then you won't play it cuz it just plain sucks, bad sound, and terrible playability. And stay the hell away from the combo packs.
