A super fair and level headed comparison of the two. I know it was likely an older model Minn Kota that I had previously used, but I think the Motorguide is far more responsive and is ridiculously conservative regarding battery usage. That said, the foot pedal design is just dopey - not everyone grew up using cable steer systems and pushing forwards to turn left just isn't intuitive. At the very least do the same thing as the Minn Kota and have directional arrows on the front edge. As always, love your stuff drew and Congrats on 10k Subs!

Great vid Drew. I researched MK's and MG's for about a month for my new boat. Ended up going with the MotorGuide Xi3 (smaller footprint than the Xi5 and no overhang) and will add a foot pedal later. The Ulterra and Terrova were both overpriced IMO, for what you're getting.

ditto! the music was annoying. I have a motorguide wireless model that came with my boat. The foot pedal does the same thing you mentioned. I bought the remote for it and use it instead. I want an Xi5, but only because I used Lowrance sounders.

Just stumbled across your channel. Nice work. The one item you didn’t comment on was accuracy of GPS and spot lock one motor compared to the other. As a lure fisher hitting snags all day it gets annoying when my boat drifts way off mark before it kicks in and repositions to “ locked spot “ I have an old 80 lb Minn I Pilot and it’s GPS anchor lock is terrible. At next upgrade was looking into something different unless they have made it more accurate. Thanks for the other info though.

I’ve got a 55lb Motorguide. The only issues I’ve had was a batch issue with the lower units rust proofing. Murcury replaced the lower unit and it’s been fine since. The other thing it does, every now and then, is go nuts. You’ll be spot locked or heading locked and it’ll turn one way or the other and go to power 10. I’ve not been pitched overboard yet, but it’s a little hairy when standing up on the front deck near the motor and suddenly it decides it doesn’t want to keep calm. Otherwise though I love it. Remote battery lasts for ages (simplicity is good sometimes) and it can save 8 tracks and 8 waypoints that it’ll go to when you press the button. Gotta write them down or make a note in your phone what location each one is though.

Great vid, good to see a good side by side comparison. My minnkota gave me grief while under warranty, steering went. Minn Repairs took great care of it and hasn’t missed a beat since.

Thanks Drew. I really want to go MG for price and Lowrance compat. But lots of reviews saying the spot lock is poor, in that it pulls you off the spot by a fair bit first then moves back to it, and also seems to hunt or over-correct more than the MK. Any thoughts on the positioning accuracy of the 2?

Excellent vid mate. Wanted the auto deploy minn kota 112lb for my 6.7 Hooker but the largest retailer in QLD said don't do it ALL the auto deploy mechanisms fail. Not much else in the space to choose from, which just gives me the royal shits.

great review. Thanks for doing the side by side. I have the MG and love it but I've had the same issues a couple times with having to reset and re-stow. I do have a question about the pinpoint though. When I set the anchor the gps positions the bow facing into the current. Is there a setting that I need to adjust in order to ensure that the boat remains positioned exactly in the direction that I am pointed?

That's a really fancy minn Kota remote, my works sells minnkota and I fit them but the remote out of the box isn't that nice, did you have to buy that as an extra?

Xi5 is 5 years old and had to replace the gps in it. Keeping it and the lowrance working together is more than a pain in the butt. Next time it's minn kota and hummingbird. Xi5 is just too much trouble.

I tried my brand spanking new Haswing 55lb GPS electric motor yesterday and had a ball. Good by anchor. Great motor for the $ as long as it keeps working.......😳

I am looking fat the 80lb Haswing too. Had a 55 lb and it was great but sold the boat after 1 season so dont know how it would have held up. Not sure the 80 comes with a long enough shaft though.

As I understand it there's around $1000 difference between them, at least for the 80lb versions. The minn being most expensive. Care to comment whether you think the $1000 extra is worth it for those extra bells and whistles? Always had a MK on my boat and am looking for an upgrade but I think I may be getting a motorguide this time around.
