This is NORMAL cockatoo behavior for many large cockatoos, especially if they are feeling hormonal, especially young males. More often than not, its several times a day. Every day. These little sessions can last much longer than this. They tend to have these little scream sessions at the end of the day at sundown... its a built in instinctual behavior. Nothing can change that. You canNOT have a cockatoo in an apartment or condo for this reason. Their scream equals the decibels of a jet engine.
All you can do is try to calm them and divert their attention. If they will not stop after a firm no, we put them in their cage and walk away. No drama from us so as to not give them any attention whatsoever. We turn our backs and leave the room. But as I said, this sundown screaming is instinctual so it usually makes no difference whether he is out, or we hold them, or sometimes even if we are not home (as seen on cams). And I just wanted to show that. Still we persist. Just as we do with any other bad behavior.
"THINK OUTSIDE OF THE CAGE".

I will add to this, that we talk often on the phone, and because Onni and I speak on the phone quite often, as well, he always wants to talk to me, so she can be, literally ANYWHERE in the house, including the basement, and he can hear my voice, and begins to yell "HELLO" and gets more and more insistent, and louder. His hearing is THAT good. The only way to peacefully resolve it, is to include him in our conversations for a couple of minutes, until he feels his needs have been addressed. Then, he goes on his way and does his calm birb things. He is THAT smart. You may call it giving in to him, but we call it including him, and addressing his needs, since he IS a captive bird, and is a part of the family. I address my dog's needs the same way.

We also leave the room if he refuses to stop so the behavior gets no attention. In addition if he bites, we immediately stop what we are doing and without drama to give him attention whatsoever, we put him back in the cage, turn our backs, and leave the room.

Thank you so much. I get flack for genuinely showing the negative behaviors that you sometimes have to deal with with most large cockatoos. Someone is always quick to say that I bring it on or am dealing with it wrong. That it's all my fault. Also even though I show the negative things 3+ minutes several times a year ... some people only focus on that. They don't consider the hours of positive footage I show. They assume he's that way most of the time. So therefore I must be "doing it wrong". Even when I explain that other channels only show the good (because their channel is for entertainment or for other purposes), those people have their own various challenges but they keep their lives more private. I also explain not all cockstoos have difficult negative behaviors, however... some are far, far worse pets and camt even be handled. They are brilliant, individual, and wild animals. They are going to vary.

Beautiful, intelligent creature. Definitely don't want one - they're like permanent toddlers. But I still love watching birb videos :)

I think it’s good…..that people like you and parrot play house show what I life with a bird…..aspecially with a big bird…….like a cockatoo or other parrots is like……because these birds need a lot of special attention……all birds need a lot of attention but parrots need a lot more!!! And a lot of people pet them on there whole body what they should not do…..only pet them on there head…………….maybe he having a hormone thing……..?but love you ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💕💕💕💕

I'm going to put this out there. Always do your research when you're going to buy any parrot. They can outlive their owners. I myself have a quaker parrot yes he is 14 years old but he can live 30 to 40 years. People truly do not understand what they are getting into when they have a parrot they are a lifelong commitment. Okay here goes I've got more to say. His mentality is that of a two or three-year-old toddler. Basically if you are planning to get a parrot any size I don't care if it's the smallest parrot or the largest parrot in the world they have the mentality of a two or three year old child and yes you can correct the behavior but they're still going to be loud. You can't sit there and put a parrot owner down because of bad behavior.

Thank you for this. For the information, and for the support. Yes, Onni is a handful. She purposefully allowed this to happen, in this video, to show what can happen, and how long it can go on- exactly what you are saying. She has had birds before, Cockatoos, as well. Right now, he is hormonal, and a teenager. People do not understand large parrot behavior, or specific large parrot behavior, and really need to ask questions before judging- she is more than happy to answer any and all of them, that is why she puts up these videos- HENCE THE TITLE. It helps so very much when she gets the support from people like yourself- thank you so very much. I bet your Quaker is a darling- I have always loved them. Anytime you'd like to send her a video, it would be welcome. Have a wonderful day, Crystal- SDK

Are you okay? What happens after he attacks you? Why doesn't his person tell him no instead making him made at you? These are all just questions, no judgements. Yu did nothing but say no, good mommy.

I am SO sorry to not have seen this comment. Its not like me. Yes we are okay. I can't believe that happened in a grocery store. That is the third grocery store to have been shot up in this country this month. This guy had been asked to leave the store. Why he shot customers is beyond me. That often happens in shootings when someone is asked to leave a site or if an employ is fired... they go after the innocents ::Shaking my head:: They make no sense. All we can do is .. stay alert. Also always know where the exits are. SIgh. Thank you for asking, that was very kind of you.

To address your questions about Onni. He is not mad at us. Read the description under the video. It completely explains EVERYTHING. :) But in short: He was not mad. This is an instinctual behavior. They scream/call/sing at night in efforts to call the flocks in and get their energy out before going to bed. Onni will do this whether in the cage, being held, or just sitting out with us most nights. I wanted to show how bad it can be. I wanted to explain that this is instinctual and that all large cockatoos can have these little scream sessions so you cannot live with on in an aprt or condo. And I wanted to address the fact that some cockatoos are better and some are even worse. What we normally do is ignore the behavior for a bit. Let him get it out. Then we try to divert his attention elsewhere. If that does not work he gets a stern no (which usually fails) and if the reprimand does not instantly stop him at that point, he goes into his cage, we turn our backs and we leave the room until he stops. We leave him in the cage for a while to settle down. Sometimes that can be half an hour, sometimes hours. We just have to monitor his mood and make sure hes "done" before letting him out.
