This was exactly what I was looking for. I learned about the anatomy of my shingled roof and things I need to be aware of should I choose to put a hole in my roof. Further, I sincerely and greatly appreciate how awesome and incredibly informative your videos are as you are clearly a master of your craft.

What about three small screws? I need to mount a tiny solar panel foot for a webcam and prefer the roof because my house faces East/West so I get full days sun instead of only a few hours. Will three small screws cause a leak?
@gregvancom2 жыл бұрын
One screw can cause a leak and if you can mount it to the side of fascia board it can be better.

My problem is some chucklehead previous owner installed a bath fan with no duct or vent to the outside, so I have to cut in a new vent to the outside, through the roof. Not looking forward to it. Ugh.

I do roofing as a trade ..it’s not making lot of sense .if you penetrate then seal it’s simple .

Don't get me wrong, you can seal the top of shingles and never have a problem. However, if you seal the top and you do have problems, then it wouldn't be a bad idea to watch this video again.

@@gregvancom Lol I see so if I drill the top and do have a problem it is going to ruin everything all the way down to the gutter and my roof is new you don't want to know what I paid for it so maybe I will just run the coax some other way.

Glad to hear from you as always and I also live in a home that could be repaired a lot easier if it had a little more slope to it. Hope you and yours have a wonderful holiday and thanks again for for watching, see you in another six months :)

Let's suppose a contractor dropped a few holes in your new roof - you didn't agree to it, but it happened - and then the roof leaked. What's the best course of action? How do you repair it?

Where on the composite shingles are you supposed to drive in the roofing nails? Above or below the horizontal adhesive? No one ever really covers exactly where roofing nails are supposed to go. Most just say put them there there and there without being specific.
@gregvancom5 жыл бұрын
I would read your roofing product manufacturers installation instructions, because they might be different on different products. I've never heard of a shingle without product installation instructions, who is the manufacturer of your shingles?

Thanks for the vid. Are those tabs for aesthetics? I hope not it just adds to the complication Best is to slide a bit of sheet metal under to span the hole.. It pretty sad people used to have metal roofs and then they went to this crap only to realize that metal was better all along. Next layer here will be metal. So so much easier. Composite shingles were probably designed by someone usedless like Martha Stewart.

I believe the tabs or slots cut into roofing shingles make it look like a wood shingle.

What about the hundred of nails that hold the shingles to the roof?
@gregvancom4 жыл бұрын
They could actually create problems also. However, it might not be in the exact way mentioned in the video.With

What about the 100,000 nail holes through the paper membrane and bottom layer of shingle? If your saying water flows uphill, every roof ever shingled will leak.
@gregvancom Жыл бұрын
It can flow up when frozen or blocked and can leak through 100,000,000 small gaps. Good point.

I think of roof as a drainage system.. not a water seal.

Can the technique we use on boats help here? Drill an over sized hole. Fill the entire hole with epoxy. Then drill in the center of the epoxy the hole for the bolt. This way sealing the bolt at in the epoxy and at the top of epoxy would not leave any water ingress thru the layers. On a boat we of course don’t have shingles. But for decks with teak this works very well.
@gregvancom5 жыл бұрын
I don't know enough about building boats to provide you with an answer. If I was to guess, I would say no, because a boat would be under some type pressure from the water it sits in, where a roof wouldn't.
