Maybe one day, but right now Carbon Fiber is considered a High End composite due to its low availability, high production cost and difficulty to work with. Carbon Fiber Composites are almost exclusively used in high end applications- think military technology, aerospace engineering, ect. Carbon fiber is hard to work with (from a labor perspective, time consuming) and not an easy material to procure. It requires special resins as well which are not readily available in the industrial composites industry right now (which naturally makes them more expensive.) I'm sure GM had to procure a special mold just to make these beds, and can only have them produced in extremely limited quantities- thus the reason why it is only available on one trim level with two engine combinations (and they chose the most expensive combo because it won't be the best selling due to high price entry point.) Don't be surprised if you don't see these trucks on most dealer lots. In the future, once more applications for this kind of tech open up, prices will eventually come down as better manufacturing techniques are developed and more people manufacture the resins and carbon fibers in larger quantities for lower prices.

@dedalliance1
@dedalliance1 5 жыл бұрын
A bed liner isn't going to protect your bed from being bent if you hit it hard enough. It just keeps the bed from being rubbed down to bare metal and keeps rust away hopefully. I bet if you put a bed liner on this truck it would make it even better.
@wildbill23c
@wildbill23c 5 жыл бұрын
@@dedalliance1 With a plastic bed you just wait for it to crack and shatter, where a bed liner depending on the type may absorb the impact, or dampen it to prevent or lesson the damage that otherwise would have been worse on an un-lined bed. I dented the bed of one of my lined trucks throwing machine gun mounts in it...so yep something heavy will certainly damage it, and nothing they were throwing in that truck bed should cause any significant damage to a truck bed that has been properly lined.
@dedalliance1
@dedalliance1 5 жыл бұрын
@@wildbill23c Yeah with a plastic bed it's more likely to shatter and crack with the right kind of force. The interesting test would be to get a piece of the carbon bed and a piece of a steel bed with a liner on it and without a liner and then put them on a hydraulic press until it either deforms to the shape of the press or cracks it. If you did it with a 1" square flat piece of metal for the puncture object on the press that would obviously give you your pounds per square inch that the material can hold up to. I'd probably say the carbon fiber bed would hold up better just because it's thicker and could take more force before breaking, where as metal whether it's aluminum or steal with a liner on it is still going to deform because that's what metal does it likes to bend. Now, a total destruction test on these beds would be to get a air powered or hydraulic hand held jack hammer with a bushing bit and a chisel bit and go to town on each type of bed and see what they look like after. At that point each bed is going to get destroyed pretty much without a doubt, but it's how long it holds up and how bad it breaks in certain areas that's going to be the interesting part. Like Fords Aluminum bed would most likely crack with a chisel bit against it, and with a bushing bit it'd probably start to crack too. A steel bed will deform better but it's not going to last very long either once it has no more elasticity and will puncture, but it's more likely to hold up and not break but will dent. And this Carbon Pro bed would be interesting because I have no idea if it'd just crack or chip out or what. The good thing is it's thicker and wont bend very much or dent, it might compress a little bit but probably not too bad. The down side is, when it cracks it's just going to keep cracking and pieces will fall out of it lol. If I had the money I'd do this test just for fun because I'm curious on how it will hold up. Maybe someone in a couple years will find these trucks in a junk yard and take the beds off and do some tests on them to their breaking point, but it'd be wasteful to do it on a perfectly good truck in my opinion lol.

The sad thing is that Ram displays the max payload and towing numbers on the first section of the build and price, but doesn't mention that as you check off boxes, it's wittling that payload rating down fast. Soooo many guys are taking delivery of their brand new 2019 Ram 1500 and expecting 1800+ lbs of payload only to see less than 1500 lbs on the sticker. It's terrible. Actually these days GM has a pretty solid line of engines. This truck has the new 10-speed which is hopefully better than the Ford version which has had quite a lot of issues. From what I've read, the 8-speed issues were fixed when Exxon Mobil reformulated the transmission fluid, which was found to be the cause of the shudder issue. GM has had a really solid rear axle that's based on the 14-bolt semi-floating axle used on GM HD gas trucks. Their IFS is a lot better than it was a decade ago and they don't use plastic upper control arms like Ram.

The home store staff suggests loading it with a forklift on a pallet. Lets see how that bed holds up with a loaded pallet drug across it. Plus those pallets probably have a loose nail or two hanging out which would really do some damage. Speaking of damage, I bet repair costs are high if you do damage it!

This is also particularly funny when you just ask for 1/2 ton from the small bob cat bucket and they guy hops in the payloader and fills the bed completely up to where it will not hold one more gravel and he says “ we’ll call that 1/2 ton”. The sheet metal in between the supports was nearly caved in. I’ve had 1 ton in the bed and not came close to the bump stops, with this load I was solidly on bump stops
