I was wondering, if it isn’t too much troubley if you could send me the pattern to make that swatch you demonstrated the flaring out and flaring towards the center stitch so I could make that sampler too. I'm afraid that I don't have a pattern for that, I just sort of made it up as I went along and honestly don't remember what I did LOL. The column on the right is m1R, k1, m1L and then the column on the left is m1L, k1, m1R.

I've recently learned a simple trick for instantly knowing if you're making a m1R or M1L that have revolutionised my knitting life. Here it goes: When you lift the bar on to the needle, look at which direction it is leaning across the needle. If it leans to the left - you are making a m1L and if it´s leaning to the right - you're making a m1R. Do it once and you never have to think about it again. It´s like magic! I kid you not, before this trick I had to have written notes before me while knitting. I've been knitting for over 40 years and I simply couldn't learn it by heart. Now, I don't even have to think about it. I don't know who the genius that came up with this is. If I ever find out, I will send her/him a love letter. Pass it on!

Very informative. Question, when a pattern simple states increase, but does not specify, is thete a standard default increase? If not, How best to determine the best increase method? (Beinner, trying to make it to intermediate)

If the pattern doesn't tell you then it really shouldn't matter. I'd read through the whole thing tho and see if there are any hints. Like there should be a listing of all of the abbreviations used in the pattern and possibly there are instructions for an increase there? There are several things to think about when choosing an increase - do you want it to be solid or leave a hole? If you don't want a hole, don't use a Yarn Over or a plain ole m1. Does the increase use up a stitch (kfb) or make one appear out of thin air (m1L/R)? Either can work, but you need to know in order to make sure your stitch counts come out right.

It isn't that KFB is no good - it is just that if you do a KFB when the pattern calls for a M1 of some sort it can get you into trouble. If it worked for you then that is awesome. I use KFB in patterns all of the time - it is a great increase.

Not in any way I can think of. Casting on creates stitches where there weren't any before. KFB uses an existing stitch and turns it into two sts.

That never occured to me. Since it is a lifted increase all you have to do is pick back to where the offending increase is and let it drop off of your needle. It will disappear.

Roxanne Richardson’s Make 1 tip is to always pick up the yarn from front to back - with the right needle for a Make 1 Right (then transfer back to the left needle without changing the mount, as you showed here) and with the left needle for a Make 1 Left. My beginner’s knitter’s brain finds that simpler than having to correlate right with back and left with front. I love your tip for how to make getting into that Make 1 right stitch easier!

It is really going to depend on the cast-on, my guess would be the top bar but as long as you do the same bar consistently it should look ok.

Thankful I found your explanation today. I want to add to the body circumference of a sweater. I knitted the smaller of two sizes on the raglan top for a good fit of the sweater but want more ease around the body after the underarm. 1.Can I use M1L and M1R to add 16 stitches? 2. If yes, Would I complete these increases in the body length ie evenly spaced? 3. Would you suggest doing these increases 4 per round - 2 on either side of the centre underarm stitch? 4. In this application should the leaning be toward the body centre? Or away from the body centre and toward the side/under the underarm stitch?

I use a M1 if I neglected to make a yo in the previous row. I know the hole made is smaller than a yo makes, but I have never noticed the size difference in the work. Making the M1 is so much better than undoing a row to add the yo especially when making a lace pattern. I have even used M1 instead of yo consistently in a pattern, sometimes it’s easier to remember the M1 for me.

I honestly cannot tell you what the pattern writer intended there. When the increases are done as described in this video they are indeed twisted, it's a very odd note to have in a pattern.

If you are picking up the bar and simply knitting into it then you will get a hole. m1 right and left twist the stitch to close up the hole.

Omg i finally got it 😭😭😭 thank you for your brief explanation and I loved the explanation with "RnB" and "LeFt"!! I will never forget that thank you much!!! I have one tiny question (because i'm working on a raglan baby overall): i started from top down with raglan increases. When the instructions say "knit to marker, m1r, sm, K1, sm, m1l" and I do as the instructions tell me, the next row i should "purl all sts"... Does that literally mean just to purl everything or should I do the row like before, just in reverse? So that it is m1l - m1l then? English is not my first language and we use different vocabulary as like "right" and "left" and everything is knit, so I don't know really... Thank you if you can answer that!

I'm glad the video helped you! Raglan shaping is one of the most common uses of these increases. With most knitting patterns taking the most literal interpretation is your best bet. If it says to purl all sts it literally means just that, purl all of the sts. Do not do any stitch except purl. You neither increase or decrease the number of sts in the row.

Every time I get a pattern with M1R and M1L I always have to rewatch videos on it. My brain 🧠 gets it garbled. And after you have done 10 rows wrong its noticeable!!😂😢It's crazy cry laugh worthy 😢😂

I knit English style and do not find that doing the m1l and m1l are difficult. I think it is just about what you are use to doing. I use a little saying to remember which is which. "I'll be RIGHT BACK and I LEFT the FRONT door open. " Also, the pattern glossary is a great way to determine what the designer wants you to do as far as the stitch abbreviations. I have a pattern that calls your M1 a M1eyelet.

Bobbles - Bobbles I cannot do as I apparently knit in a modified Eastern manner, Mom had a hard time with them as she was a true left handed knitter. I remember the afghans she knitted with the "popcorns" or bobbles and she hated every minute of eery popcorn she had to do. Me so far I avoid like the plague, although the cabling is a breeze, there are certain stitches I just cannot do and bobbles or popcorns are one.

I am not a bobble fan. I don't like the execution of the stitch and I don't like the way they look LOL!

when I do M1R and M1L I remember to knit it through the 'short' leg. The 'short leg' is in the front when we insert back to front. The 'short leg' is in the back when we insert front to back. So now I will work on a nice little ditty same as "righty tighty" and "lefty loosey". hmmmm.

That's not one I have done a specific video for I don't think? I think it has probably shown up in a video or two. It isn't worth a whole video on it's own. I'll think on a theme that would include it.

i believe in russia, they make an increase by knitting through the loop below the active left needle loop. i think it does not leave a hole...
