I made a scarf out of DK yarn which is thinner than any yarn I’ve used before. The shawl is a lace shawl. I’m used to weaving in ends when making thick sweaters as there’s a lot of places to hide the ends! How would you weave in ends on a lace shawl! That shawl you demonstrated today was nice and easy for new knitters! Thank you for your videos!

When my mom taught me to knit when I was six (decades ago, LOL) I learned to use my thumb to cast on. Essentially knitting each stitch off of your thumb instead of asecond needle. I still use this c/o because it seems less fiddly than the c/o you demonstrated. Just my personal preference. Do you ever c/o with your thumb? BTW the crescent shawl is my go to, I like to add some texture or lacy stitches in the mix. Enjoy your channel
@WatchBarbaraKnit
@WatchBarbaraKnit 2 жыл бұрын
The thumb cast on definitely works, but I do not find it my best choice for many situations. It isn't a particularly stable cast on and it is a challenge to properly manage the tension on it. But if it's what you like and is your go to then more power to you!

Hi Barbara, love your tutorials!! I would like to do this shawl without the holes of the yarn overs. Which increase would you recommend to replace the yo's? Would it be the same for both or would the beginning yo be different than the ending? Thank you in advance ❤
@WatchBarbaraKnit
@WatchBarbaraKnit 7 ай бұрын
The easiest way to get rid of the holes would be to knit all of the yarn overs through the back loop when you come to them. So essentially it would change the row to k2, YO, k1tbl, knit to last 3 sts, k1tbl, YO, k1, s1-wyif. That way you get the ease of increasing with a YO without the holes. Another way to do it would be to replace the YO increase with an increase that doesn't leave a hole, like make 1. For this I would do m1R on the leading edge and m1L at the end of the row.

@WatchBarbaraKnit
@WatchBarbaraKnit 2 жыл бұрын
I looked it up and that is 437 yards of fingering weight yarn so it would make a small-ish shawl just fine. It is an acrylic yarn so if you want to block it you would have to steam heat block.

@WatchBarbaraKnit

Since this video is aimed at beginners I chose a super easy cast-on. It is called the cable cast on and lets you avoid messing about with the long tail. If you are more comfortable with the long tail totally use that one.

I like shawls that sit on your shoulders and stay there. I have a couple shawls that are that way and I’m not really sure what makes them stay there. I use fingering mostly, but my fav one that sits on my shoulders is made of alpaca/cotton DK knit in a lace pattern. I added an extra 4” bcos I had the yarn, and the tails still don’t get too long, as I hate long tails.
@WatchBarbaraKnit

LOL, long tails are my favorite so most of my patterns have them. To each their own! I think I replied to you on a different video with my thoughts on staying on the shoulder.

If you want to add a line of lace. Would you work a so many knits stitches then yarn over then knit and repeat tell the end
@WatchBarbaraKnit
@WatchBarbaraKnit 2 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid it's not as easy as that. A YO is an increase so for every increase you need a decrease or it will change the stitch count. Most of the time an eyelet row is yo, k2tog repeated across.
@sfaloha9239
@sfaloha9239 2 жыл бұрын
Many thanks for showing that both Continental and English versions can be done in the same project. With one of my projects, I was knitting in English and during the project switched to Continental. In the following row, the stitches were all turned around. For each stitch on the left needle, I had to remove from needle, turn the stitch and replace it on the needle and then knit the new stitch. I'm not sure what I was doing wrong.
@WatchBarbaraKnit
@WatchBarbaraKnit 2 жыл бұрын
So there are two probable culprits for that. One, you are knitting through the wrong leg of the stitch (the back leg instead of the front). If not that then you are most likely wrapping your yarn around your needle backwards. You always want to wrap your yarn counterclockwise around the needle, from left to right.

The ones you see in the video are specifically made for knitting, but I also use bigger ones that were intended to be play floor in a child's space. I've never had a problem but if you are concerned you could put towels over the mats to protect them.

To get the drape I like for a shawl I typically use a US size 5 or 6 with fingering weight yarn. But it depends entirely on your tension. Just do some swatches until you find a fabric you like. And remember that the drape will change if/when you block the fabric.

Wish I knew the secret to make a crescent shawl that was long enough in the back(not a shawlette), but without tails that hang to my knees! So, is it the way you increase the edges? Would short rows give it some depth without adding to the length, but then you can’t to stripes. I thought u may have done a video on this before.
@WatchBarbaraKnit
@WatchBarbaraKnit Жыл бұрын
Yes, short rows would be the answer to achieve a deep crescent but you are also right that it would cause problems with stripes unless you also got into intarsia. Unfortunately I have very little experience with short rows (I just don't like doing them) so I can't be of further assistance. You might want to look at the Color Affection shawl to see how that designer used short rows and stripes in a crescent shape.
@carblarson8868

Wondering if anyone knows whether adding eyelet rows would take more or less yarn than stockinette or garter. By eyelet I mean, WS: K RS: “Ktog, yo “. Repeat WS: K. I have limited yardage and wanted to design my own shawl.
