Thanks so much for this video! I have been watching video after video trying to understand how shawls are constructed. A lot of people will show you step-by-step, but I still couldn't figure out which was the side that goes around your shoulders, versus the bottom or the point. This was really helpful because I am working on designing 18th or 17th century Shaw. Mostly because what always happens for me is that I find The Yarn, before I find the pattern. In terms of suggestions... This may sound really basic for you, but I just found out about Ravelry like 6 months ago. I'm still trying to figure out how it works. It seems a lot of people make references to it, and to the designers and their work through it. You mentioned that learning these different shapes would be helpful when you're looking on Ravelry, and I agree. Especially for Knitters or crocheters who are returning to the craft after a hiatus. The last time I was knitting regularly was 10 years ago and I don't know if Ravelry was around then or not. If it was, I wasn't aware of it Generally, for me anything about design and construction would be really helpful. Not so much the nuts-and-bolts, the details, but more like this video about how to conceptualize the design.

If you ever want to do a part two then you can do circles, semi circles and squares! And then there’s the really funky stuff like three quarter squares, L shapes, v shapes, u shapes and more! The possibilities are endless!

This was so helpful. I would love to see a demonstration of different ways to wear them. I seem to make them and don’t know how to wear them ! I am doing my first asymmetrical and not sure what to do when finished !

Enjoyed this very much. I've made all but a rectangular wrap; I'll do one at some point. I like the crescent ones the best, I just wish they grew sooner, covering more area. Crescents seem to stay on your shoulders better when worn with the opening in the front. Thank you for this discussion. ❤ --KateColors

Hi. This video was great, but I have a question. Is there a way to put a point on the crescent shape so that it looks more like a shallow triangle? I have been trying to crochet a center top down triangle scarf, but I can't get the proportions right. I want it to be the shape of 2 asymmetrical triangles connected on the short ends and I'd prefer it to have a spine but I just can't figure out how to do it.

I would try a mix between a crescent and a shallow symmetrical triangle shawl. Crescents tend to get their shapes from increases on the edges only, triangles from increases on the edges and the middle. You can get a wide, not super deep triangle by increasing on the edges and either side of your center stitch on the right side, and ALSO on ONLY the edges on the wrong side. This may be what you want to accomplish- a good example of this is The Age of Brass And Steam shawl. In theory, if you decreased the number of rows you increase in the center, you would still have a point, but the sides would increase faster- I have no idea if you took it to center increases every 3 or 4 rows, but increasing on the edges every row, if the shape would be coherent, but that also might be fun to play around with . Thank you trying too find crochet increase got 18 or 20 hdc then chain 1 or 2 do 3hdc in one stitch do rest at end don't remember do 3 inch dcs at last stitch then ch1 or 2 do 3 hdcs . I thought one pattern somewhere you tube increase at end of row three then next row hdc down then do increase of 3 . just can't find the video

Hi Joyce, I’ve seen patterns written by many designers, such as Rachy Newin, who do crescent shawls like this, but can’t point you to a specific video. I find most of the patterns I do on Ravelry as a written pattern 🤷‍♀️❤️

Why is there so little info available about a true "Top down" shawl? Not the garter tab start, but a full cast on of the long first row, then back and forth with DECREASES to the pointed bottom . ( the Yarn Harlot does do a short mention in her book) You do long stitch rows when the project is new and you're full of enthusiasm and when you hit that "Oh Lord is this ever going to be finished" your shorter and shorter rows fly!
