3 grammys and nominated for a 4th with a star on the Hollywood walk of fame. PTX is the pinnacle of acapella. They gave Kevin a break on the beat boxing on this one. Check out their first grammy Daft Punk or their version of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. Subbed for more PTX.

I think the type and how much beatboxing Kevin does is directly tied to the sound and vibe they’re going for in each song. The overall feeling they impart to each piece is more important to them than having every member go full stop every time. This rendition is incredible because of its softness and restraint. FYI don’t know how Avi’s amazing bass tones didn’t stand out to him.

@@mel3268 To be fair, everyone stood out with their voice and sounds amazing individually and as a group. But Kevin and Avi were (are) amazing!

You haven't seen what Kevin can do with his beat boxing. He is a musical genius and as great as their cover of this song is, it doesn't scratch the surface of his talents. No one compares to him, imo. Thanks for checking the GOAT of acapella out. PTX literally paved the way for the success of other modern acapella grouos and their catalogue if music is big and crosses all genres. Their original music is even better than their covers. Each member is a musical unicorn with their vocals, song writing and arranging. Subcribed for more PTX.

New subscriber, Pentatonix brought me here. They do these big songs so well. Can You Feel the Love Tonight, The Prayer and Amazing Grace have a similar full, lush character. For something completely different, try their Daft Punk medley (which won them their first Grammy), their cover of Bohemian Rhapsody and maybe John Lennon’s Imagine for something more introspective. I loved your reaction, especially your chuckle when they started humming toward the end! Thanks for giving PTX a listen, I hope you do more. Peace from Ohio …

New subscriber. Love your reaction to pentatonix. Just be prepared to have your mind blown. Kevin, the beatboxer can do things you won't believe and will blow your mind. Mitch is a countertenor and hadn't gotten near to falsetto in this song. He can and does go even higher without leaving his head and chest voice.

The bass singer in this song is the man in the beanie, Avi Kaplan, (he has done a song with Home Free, Ring of FIre) and is a Basso Profundo (spelling) his low notes are incredible, and he also has a wonderful range into higher notes. They have many, many covers and originals, I"d suggest having a quick look through their play list and pick either a song you know and like, or more fun, pick a song you maybe have heard too many times. They tend to upgrade the original in almost every case!

The gentleman with the beard and wearing the beanie is a Basso Profundo. Surprised you missed that. His name is Avi (pronounce Ah-vee) Kaplan and he has been featured on a couple of the Home Free videos. Both bands know each other very well and especially Avi. Pentatonix was on a televised singing competition called the sing off during season 3 and won. Home Free was on season 4 and Pentatonix came back and mentored them. Homefree won season 4. Pentatonix has 4 Grammy nominations and has 3 Grammy wins in their earlier career. Homefree leans country and Pentatonix is more in the pop lane though they won a Grammy doing a collaboration with Dolly Pardon of her hit Jolene. The Daft Punk medley is Grammy win #1 and a song without words is #2 Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. This PTX video of Hallelujah has 708 million views. I would suggest Daft Punk as your next reaction but everything they do is an upgrade. thanks!!!

Not having heard other Pentatonix songs, your comment about the beatboxing is fair. However, this song didn’t require heavy beatboxing. Recommend their version of Bohemian Rhapsody or their Daft Punk (medley) for a better understanding of Kevin’s beatboxing. Subscribed.

I love this group & love that they let each member shine in each of their songs. Scott was the first singer & starts many of their songs. Avi came next & sadly has left the group & was replaced by Matt, another black singer with an outstanding voice. Kirstey is the beautiful gal who looks totally different in every video, as does Mitch, the little guy with the high voice. Last is Kevin the Beatboxer/percussionist, who also sings like an angel. Matt the new guy, sings on ''Sound of Silence' & one song I can think of that Kevin sang on, is my fav by these guys 'Mary did you know?'. I also love their version of 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. It is shocking what they can do with only their voices/bodies!

The original song was written by Leonard Cohen in the early 70s. The modern arrangement was done be John Cale. In around 1975 John Cale went to a performance by Leonard. He liked the song so he asked if he could put it on his next album and Leonard being the mench that he was said yes and sent him 20 pages of lyrics. Seriously, not 20 stanzas, 20 pages. Leonard liked John's arrangement so much he also adopted it, but rarely you will hear another verse. Jeff Buckley did a hauntingly beautiful rendition in the mid 80s.

Pentatonix They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead); Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”. Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on KZbin, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his KZbin videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on KZbin), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on KZbin, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cove r of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre. Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/ Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win. Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. No dates YET! They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only a capella group with a star! Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!! 1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to. 2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album. 3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.

Welcome to PTX! Great reaction! You've barely scratched the surface of what they are capable of, and I have subbed for more! So, you want to hear some beatboxing and bass, huh? LOL! Try their "Can't Hold Us," cover, their "Daft Punk" medley which earned them their first Grammy, their "Problem" cover, their "Gold" cover, and their original song "Love Again." These are all from when Avi was the bass singer. He left the group in 2017. To hear some newer songs with Matt as bass, try "New Rules x Are You That Somebody," their "90's Dance Medley," their "Attention" cover, their "Evolution of Ariana Grande," their "Come Along" cover, and their original song "Coffee in Bed." Or really just pick any song on their playlist at random, they'll never let you down.

Leonard Cohen wrote the original song...which has far more verses than most singers do. I think there's 70 verses altogether. It seems to have been a project he just couldn't fully finish for years. Home Free is more country oriented, whereas Pentatonix(PTX) is more pop genre. They've done some awesome covers of iconic songs like Imagine, Bohemian Rhapsody, Sound of Silence, I Can't Help Falling In Love With You, Mad World... and newer stuff...Daft Punk medley, Blinding Lights, When The Party's Over, Butter/Dynamite, Can't Hold Us, 90's Dance Music and some originals...Sing, Love Again, Run To You, Happy Now, Be My Eyes, Coffee In Bed, The Lucky Ones, Love Me When I Don't. You should check out their Daft Punk medley next. Kind of give you another side of what they are capable of doing. As I'm sure many people have told you, they've had one member change over the years. Avi, the long-haired bass singer, left in 2016 for personal reasons and was replaced by Matt. So some newer videos will feature Matt while the older ones will feature Avi. Listen to Daft Punk, Bohemian Rapsody to see Kevin go bonkers with the Beat Boxing. First guy singing ,the blonde, Scott is a baritone with an Amazing range, takes over the bass when Avi, Jesus guy sings. and now Matt who replaced Avi when he left in 2017. The First Lady of Pentatonix, Kirsty, is soprano with more Amazing ranges in her voice. Next Mitch, with hat, is a rare counter tenor with Mad Amazing ranges. This group is ACAPELLA. Yet another successful Mitchslap. Oh, and btw my guy, that wasn't falsetto. That's his standard voice. He is what is known as a countertenor. Defined as: a type of classical male singing voice whose vocal range is equivalent to that of the female contralto or mezzo-soprano voice types, generally extending from around G₃ to D₅ or E₅. Not to mention the fact that he is superhuman. 😄

I seem to be the first commenter to suggest an a capella group other than Pentatonix and Home Free (both of whom I love, by the way). I am also quite fond of Face Vocal Band, five (as of now) guys out of Colorado. A good starting place is their mashup of Jessie’s Girl and Stacy’s Mom. They also do a version of Hallelujah. I just subbed in hopes of more a capella reactions! ❤ You haven't even scratched the surface with these guys! The bass in all 3 groups know each other. This bass, Avi, is a classically trained basso profundo & has broken sound systems just like Tim & Geoff have! Just not needed in this song. Avi also sang in Home Free's "Ring of Fire" video, and did a cameo in another HF video. They all have 5-6 octave ranges! Mitch, guy in the big hat, didn't even approach his falsetto in this song! He's a Counter Tenor and can sing soprano in full voice. The only a capella group with 4 Grammy nominations & 3 Grammies, as well as a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Pentatonix brought a capella back into the mainstream. The other groups have done videos I believe should be award winning, but PTX has led the way. Grammy Awards created a special place in the awards just so PTX could be nominated & win! Any future Awards will be following their lead! Check out tons of their massive catalog! Pentaholics will come! I'm a Pentafry Player myself with a happy ear for Vocative. I'm looking forward to more of your journey down the a capella rabbit hole! 😊

Sorry for being late to the party on this one Biz!😅 Anyway, great reaction and I'm so happy you finally got to hear PTX!!!🙃 They are incredible and are the group that paved the way for others like Home Free!😉 While this one is great, it is NOT a good representation of what they are capable of. They have so much to choose from but for me the 2 songs that stand out are... 1.) "DAFT PUNK MEDLEY" - 2.) "MARY DID YOU KNOW" Those songs are in complete contrast from each other. The first is a super fun and cleverly done dance groove, and the second is moving as all hell and stunningly done!!💯 I think they will give you a better taste of PTX's greatness! Just my thoughts and as always... you rock Biz!!😎❤

I can see how you could come to the conclusions you came to after hearing this one song from PTX. I think it might be informative to you to check out all their Grammy winners. 1. "Pentatonix - Daft Punk" (medley/mash-up). Grammy winner. 2. "Pentatonix & Dolly Parton - Jolene". Grammy winner. 3. "Pentatonix - Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy (Official Video)". Grammy winner. After you do, I think you'll see they refuse to be confined to any one genre & that Kevin, their beatboxer is truly amazing. Not all songs call for percussion sounds. It's wise to know if a song can or cannot be enhanced with it's addition. They are so talented. So versatile. So unique. 1 year after they won the A'Capella television talent contest, the A'Capella movie, "Pitch Perfect" was released. Coincidence? Due to their wildly impressive win & subsequent growing fan base, I, for one, think not. Home Free won the contest the very next season of The Sing Off. Would they have been as successful after that win had PTX not blazed the way for other A'Capella groups to succeed? Who knows, but I think not. The are the leaders of A'Capella groups for a reason. I'll be interestead in following your journey. Subscribed.

Welcome aboard the ss ptx. There are many ports of call along this journey and I urge you to stop at more. There's already many recommendations listed I believe. Hallelujah was first written by Leonard Cohen, not sure when tho but he has passed on I think. Its also considered one of the most covered sings in music. Kd Lang is of note, but probably the artist most known today is the late Jeff Buckley. As for ptx I've always preferred them over all other acapella groups because I think they're on a different level. They also came first and their crazy success opened the door for groups like home free and voiceplay, so they should thank ptx for their careers. Ptx is far and away the most popular and most awarded with 3 grammys, and many more nominations including one nomination this year. One correction, the skinny dude is mitch and that wasn't falsetto. He's a rare counter tenor which means he has a crazy vocal range including higher than kirsty, the girl. And damn right, a girl WAS needed in an acapella group! Their diversity is amazing as is their ability to sing in any genre, including rap and techno. Keep listening!

Avi is a Basso Profundo who can go way down in range. Mitch is the high note guy who is singing in the Counter Tenor range. That's like a falsetto but there's no effort since its his natural voice. They used to that range by castrating boys so that their voices don't change. A few singers are naturally in this range every generation.

Familiarize yourself with the amazing KO... Kevin Olusula is phenomenal. I wouldn't make those claims just yet, my friend. PTX is top of this genre. Avi Kaplan and then Matt Salee are also top of their bass games. Try their mash up of covers "New Rules Are You that Somebody" to hear Matt and Kevin going to town. And there's just too many songs to name that will amaze your brain! I appreciate your reaction and opinion, but I think after only hearing one song it's a bit unfair. How many Home Free songs have you heard? Just one? I'm here for more PTX reactions, and to see your mind being blown!!!

Lol Home Free is no doubt good but there is no comparison to PTX. There would be none of the others without the work done by them. PTX sells out tours in major locations on their own. Need to listen to any of their upbeat stuff or any of their many original songs

Kevin, the beatboxer, can beatbox WHILE he plays his cello- check out PTX's Radioactive or catch him on his own channel Kevin Olushola (KO) and listen to Down. That will give you an idea of what he is capable of. I subbed for more PTX reactions.

If you want to really see what they can do. Daft punk should be your next song. Followed by sound of silence and imagine. This song barely scratches the surface of their musical ability.

I kind of get why people like this Pentatonix version of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" so much. It's smooth and easy listening. But, other than Leonard Cohen's versions of his own song, both John Cale's and Jeff Buckley's covers of this song are closer to Cohen's grittier tone, both musically & lyrically. But, as Leonard Cohen himself said, KD Lang's covers of this song were his favourites. Here are 2 of her iterations (from the 2010 Olympics opening ceremonies in Vancouver and her 2005 Juno Awards performance): kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpSygoahlMiAhZI kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpCxoauKjMeirKc 0:07
