I just love this watch and have come back to this vid many times. I pulled the trigger today and sent in my wire transfer to Govberg. I am so stoked!

This is a very weird watch. In all the images and pictures online I have seen, the watch almost looks cartoonish. However, during a trip to my local AD I had the chance to see one in the flesh and try it on and fell in love. Those not convinced by this piece really need to make the effort to see one for real.

This is definitely a watch I can see myself purchasing, I own a few Tissot Sea-touches at this current moment.. Although, I am pretty young ... 20 years old to be exact. To buy the watch, or grow my current business.. T'is the question indeed, but it is so tempting! $13 000 isn't THAT much compared to other Rolex collections.

Hi Thomas, Thanks for contributing to our channel! I totally identify with your dilemma, but congrats on your success so far (and so early!). This Deepsea D-Blue is a fantastic next collecting step after the Tissot divers, and I think it would be a good "keeper" to own and wear daily. As a unique edition and something of a first in Rolex history, there is real collector potential in the D-Blue. The durability for daily use is there, and the D-Blue gradient dial is more subtle than some of the early press photos suggested; it can be worn with formal (i.e., business) attire without concern. Due to the tank-like build of the Deepsea, it goes without saying that the watch can go anywhere that your Tissot models can... and perhaps a few places they cannot. Even general durability issues (e.g. crystal knocks against doorknobs, hooking the bracelet clasp on a car seat belt) become non-events due to the ridiculous strength that Rolex invests in the Deepsea for diving purposes; it pays counterintuitive dividends in daily life. Regarding the challenge of balancing collecting against career, I can only offer my own experience as a guide. After college, I started buying vintage special-interest watches (early El-Primero, Accutron, etc.) in my early 20s while testing the waters in securities law as a paralegal. After deciding that law wasn't for me, I spent four years in the Navy as an officer with Public Affairs, and I started budgeting for the good stuff. I kept a "watch fund" in parallel to general savings, and on my 26th birthday, I used it to start my JLC collection that continues to this day. It was a passion that became my profession (which also continues to this day!). It sounds like you're ahead-of-the-curve compared to the 20-year old Tim that I was in 2004, so you may be ready to start collecting in earnest earlier than I was. Consider your love for watches, balance that against your business ambitions, and remember; you only live once, so live well! Best, tim

I've been told on numerous occasions by several AD's that the original black dial deep sea variant has never sold well at all and have struggled to shift them. Rumours have also gone around that the D Blue has not been in a limited supply as intended because a lot of over stock black dials at Rolex were swapped out for D Blue dials. I personally think the deep sea in general is too top heavy for the width of the supplied bracelet and should have been a little wider to compensate for the bulk.

It's an interesting watch ... I wish the dial extended throughout the whole case and I wish they didn't write "original gas escape valve" around the dial... I feel like this takes away from the prestige of the timepiece.

Deepsea Challenge should have a much thicker sapphire right? thicker than 5 mm i think.
@the1916company10 жыл бұрын
Hi Il Ping, This model is the Deepsea Sea-Dweller, so the crystal is 5mm thick. You are correct about the Deepsea Challenge, a prototype that accompanied James Cameron on the *outside* of his submersible during the 2012 dive. That watch was nearly 30mm thick and featured a crystal of 14.3mm. Again, that was a prototype and technology demonstrator, so it is not available to the public. The Deepsea Sea-Dweller is offers the thickest crystal of any publicly-offered Rolex watch. Best, Tim

Hello watch guy. Do you know if Rolex has any all titanium watches? I have a nickel allergy so I will get a rash from anything that has nickel. I can only wear titanium as far as I know.
@the1916company10 жыл бұрын
Hi Gareth, Rolex does not sell titanium watches and has never offered any. Considering your needs, I would advise you to stay far from the current 904L stainless models due to their elevated nickel content relative to the 316L models. If you feel comfortable with the older 316L models, I'd say shop among those models, but if that fails, precious metal may be your best bet. Older Rolex Day-Date 1803 models in particular are dirt cheap for the quality and substance you get, and if your budget permits, newer Rolex watches in platinum and white, rose, and yellow gold offer wonderful selection and quality. Omega, Panerai, JLC, Breitling, and IWC will offer you many titanium options among watches that typically sell for prices comparable to pre-owned Rolex SS sports models. Give us a call at watchuwant.com, and we can help you navigate around your allergy. Best, Tim

I'll add that Rolex's subsidiary brand, Tudor, offers several titanium options. Check out the Tudor Pellagos 25500TN and the new 25600TN for a Rolex-engineered Submariner-style diver. The newest 25600 even includes an in-house movement with COSC certification. Best, Tim

I did not see you turning the bezel....does that mean it's not functional? ;-) My neighbour just ordered two of these from his AD. The depth rating is ridiculous and just adds unnecessary weight and size to the watch. The steel hardness is nothing special...check out Damasko's proprietary steel.

I just purchased the all black 116660. The heft is what appealed to me. I love the standard sub and all, but this just has incredible wrist presence. I also purchased the 18k gold "Smurf" 116619 which I will picking up this following Monday. It has incredible heft as well due to the white gold, but doesn't quite command the same kind of attention the 116660 does.
@the1916company9 жыл бұрын
+armystrong6920 Congratulations on two fantastic choices! You're absolutely right to note that they appeal in different ways, and the subtlety of the Smurf is exquisite. The Deepsea is a no-holds-barred sports bruiser with an image to match, and the 116619 is quietly opulent... just that flash of "royal" blue to declare its hidden "majesty." To all the world, the Smurf is a steel watch, and the outstanding Rolex white gold is a secret between you and your watch. Wear them both in great health and good "times." Best, Tim

Hi Tim, as always you've done a brilliant job of reviewing this watch and yet again you've managed to shift my focus on my next dream watch. When you reviewed the platinum yachtmaster it was the Rolex that jumped to the top of my list, but then I saw your review of the GMT2 (batman) and my obsession began with that one but now I've watched this video and I realised that my first Rolex must be this one! Thanks for pushing my budget higher and higher lol. I'll be contacting you in the next couple of months as I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on my next purchase, the JLC master geographic. I've been dreaming and saving for this watch for quite a while as I want to pay cash for it and not credit. After purchasing this time piece I had my heart set on the Zenith El Primero open power reserve. I was going to start the saving process again but I think this Rolex has to come first. I look forward to speaking to you further about my future purchase. Take care, Tim. Regards, Alex.

Nice review, as is your BALL Deepquest review. Can you compare/contrast the two? I echo the comment that it would have been nice to see the wrist presence, especially after just watching your Deepquest review. You have the best watch reviews I've seen. Thank you for what you do!
@the1916company9 жыл бұрын
+john doe Thank you for following our channel! In my opinion, the Ball is a very competitive offering on purely substantive terms. It's tough, it's accurate, and it feels just as sturdy in the hand. Rolex has improved its bracelet and clasp quality immensely in the last ten years, but the huge disparity between lug width and bracelet width can make the Deepsea an aesthetic and ergonomic challenge. The Ball, by comparison, is better braced on the wrist by its bracelet, and the Ball gains additional points thanks to a better visual match between bracelet and case width. My feeling is that the Ball is the larger watch of the two but wears smaller from an ergonomic perspective; that order is reversed with the Deepsea. Ball's clasp is built with impressive precision, strength, and useful features. It's at least equal to the Rolex, and some owners may find it superior. In terms of materials, there's no doubt that Rolex's high--grade steel and gloss ceramic bezel are a slight cut above what Ball uses, but the difference is intangible from a sensory standpoint. Movement refinement favors the Rolex, but this too may be a cerebral advantage, not a practical one. Recall that during the inaugural 2009 Chronometry Competition in Le Locle, two ETA movements including a 2824 finished 3-4 behind the 1-2 of Jaeger-LeCoultre's tourbillon watches. So the movement advantage of the Rolex may only translate to a few hours of power reserve and antimagnetic resistance at the limit. A good watchmaker can regulate either to keep far better than COSC standards. The dial is where opinion comes into play. Ball uses a staggered dial layout that includes several distinct layers. Rolex employs a predominantly flat dial, but it enhances the effect with playful color and gradient effects on the Deepsea D-Blue. Each is highly legible, and the sole practical distinction is that Rolex's Chromalight luminova offers better illumination in the immediate aftermath of nightfall (or lights out) than the Ball's tritium trasor capsules. The Ball only pulls ahead several hours after sundown when the tritium's self-powered glow overtakes the fading charge of the Rolex. Best, Tim

Really? Conversation starter? EX: "Hi, your watch is nice." --"Thanks, it can tolerate water depths of over 12,000 feet and when you spend as much as I did on this you call it a "time piece"". **"Oh I see, do you dive?" --"Yes, I'm a semi-professional muff diver certified to dive on models over 18 years old and under 108 lbs." **"Wow, I would never had had anything to talk about with you had you not worn this wonderful wa- I mean time piece." --"Yes, I am quite droll, the sapphire crystal is 5mm thick." **"Neat, can I be your friend?" ---"Hahahahahahaha, oh stop, really, stop. Ahhhhhhhh, you're funny, what would we talk about once i've exhausted all the features of this watch as a conversation starter?" **"good point, take care Commodore."

Hi Dirk, glad you agree with me; you just had a 136 word conversation with yourself! Clearly, the watch did its job. Best, Tim
@pt59510 жыл бұрын
Tim- You lose all credibility after disclosing you actually counted the words in my posting. BTW, the "job" of a watch is to measure the passage of time. The responsibility for starting and having conversation is one's own. It's called a personality, clever or not I give credit to people for trying to have a real conversation rather than sit at the bar or coffee shop with their sleeves rolled up and staring at their watch hoping someone happens along to say "Hi, you must be wonderful, I want to have a conversation with you." Then you say: "I'm Tim, I'm horribly simple, lets talk about my watch. By the way, I'm a word counter and you've just spoken thirteen words to me in your greeting." To which they reply: "Ok then, you're creepy, nice watch, bye." Dirk
@the1916company10 жыл бұрын
Hi Dirk, Please don't mistake my tone; it was meant as a tongue-in-cheek. Self-deprecating humor and a sense of irony are necessary when paying serious money for a mechanical watch- any watch. If it isn't fun for you, you don't have to take part. Most of the folks who buy luxury watches do it for fun, for conversation, and for kicks. That's all- cheers. Best, Tim
