Vario 1918 Trench Watch Extended Review

I've been watching reviews on this watch for the last week. Unfortunately, I missed the kickstarter, but I'm happy I was still able to get one of these. I opted for the brass case with the off-white dial and orange numerals, to give it that extra vintage look. It's a really great looking piece with an interesting history behind the design.

I think you’ll like it! I’m waiting on a similar model, the cream dial with orange numerals, but the medic version in the brass case. Really looking forward to it. :)

Great review! I just got the brass-cased 40mm standard-style Trench watch with the etched caseback. It looks superb and I love the vintage look. The bund strap is very comfy and made of very soft leather. And you're right about Ivan, the owner. He responded instantly, immediately and helpfully to my pre-purchase Qs.

There were trench watches of the era that had “modern fonts “ similar to the Vario branding on this watch. I think it looks perfect here. It would have been tacky if they had gone for some swoopy font to try and look old.

Best review of this watch I've seen. I agree with so much of what you said. I cannot wait 'til mine arrives! I got the black dial with white numerals. The one little issue I have (and I was well aware of it before I ordered) is that, with the black dial, you do lose some of that "drop shadow" look to the numerals. The numerals look a little bit less three-dimensional. But I think the glossy black enamel dial is just gorgeous. I can imagine wearing it with a tuxedo! (Do I get dressed-up all the time? Not at all. But I see this as a very special watch for very special occasions.) I understand this is, like, the ultimate proto-type military field watch. But that stunning vintage aesthetic and glossy black enamel dial....I think it could make for a wonderful and unique dress watch. Not as thin as one usually thinks of a dress watch (and NOT on the bund strap, obviously), but, with the rounded case, I think it will slide under a cuff without a problem. I LOVE this watch! It's gorgeous. FIVE GOLD STARS! (I am looking forward to seeing your review of the brass "Medic." Please include a side-by-side.) I also agree with you that Vario makes packaging and accessories which are highly practical and useful. Definitely a company to watch!

One of my friends has the black and it's a great looking watch (I show a wrist pic of it in the video). It can make a great daily, in terms of look and comfort, and fit a variety of scenarios. I will be doing a side-by-side once the medic arrives. Vario is a great microbrand. Thanks for watching!

Hi. I just ordered the silver w/ cream and orange numbers. Just curious, how is the time keeping now after having it a while?

I've dealt with quite a few of the trench watches and the miyota keep fairly good time as far as mechanical watches go. The regulation seems to generally be in the -10 to +10 per day.

The great thing about that movement is when it comes time for a service you can simply replace the movement at a fraction of the cost of a regular service.

I’m a little bit late to the party having only just discovered this brand but currently trying to decide between the trench and the medic. I appreciated your other video comparing the two but still can’t decide which one to get 😂 so if you could only have one which one would it be?? And do you think the seiko movement is better than the Miyota? Ignoring the noise issue from the Miyota.

Easy question first...the movements are about on par, as far as I'm concerned. As for which I would I would choose if only one....ehhhhhhhhh....wow that'd be hard, but probably the Medic.

Yeah it can be a tough choice! I think the cream dial goes with the brass really well, my opinion. ;)

Brian, I am currently trying to install a new 6497 movement back into the case. I have a question. What is the secret for installing those little brackets and screws that secure the movement into the case? I can't get those installed. The screws fly. Also, does the spacer go in before the crown? Or, before those securing brackets get installed? I know you have a lot of experience with this. I desperately need some tips. I have made a lot of progress but am stumped trying to put this watch back together correctly. Thanx.
