The one thing you failed to mention is how rolex is treating their customers. Walk into an AD and ask for a submariner, and you'll be laughed out of the store. Rolex makes no effort to ensure that their watches end up on customer's wrists instead of in the hands of grey market dealers. If I could buy a rolex gmt master II or submariner at retail price instead going through scalpers, I would 100% support the company.

Two days to get one, 1. spend so much on overpriced jewelry with the implicit promise that you will keep doing so, that the AD has no choice but to allocate you one. Or 2. in conjunction with the Authorised dealer, take the watches, sell in grey market, and remit the AD's cut back to him (this is how the majority of new Rolex's are sold).

Pushing out costomers, being rude and simply insulting costomers is a proven strategy used by many established brands to push potential costomers to put thier hands into thier pockets to pull out the Plastic Card and throw it on the sales persons face, simply go over board and buy the products. Ok it is easy to sell watches when there is a waiting list, you basically just have to pick your phone up a call next customer. Nice vid but a few things to consider. 1. Swiss watch manufacturing developed its horoligical capabilities in the late 1800s to early 1900s when they were counterfeiting American made watches in that time. They because so good at making watches that Switzerland developed into what we know today. 2. I think a lot of people underestimate the power the replicas have on the Rolex we know and love today. As mentioned in the vid, some details are developed (or chosen) specifically because they're so difficult to cooy. The color of their dials and bezel inserts for example. Imagine a Rolex that didn't pay such close attention to detail. Also, details of the modern Rolex like the engraving on the rehaut, the lec, the placement/location of the serial number - they're all a huge part of the modern Rolex and it was all designed as anti countering techniques. So imagine a world where Rolex doesn't have to deal with these issues? When you think about it, Rolex's only real true competition is to replicas.

I think that's true up to a point. But I reckon it's also about overinflated retail prices. If you could get a Submariner , let's say, for an amount which truly reflected the product - perhaps 4.5K - then many people tempted by fakes would probably be prepared to dig that little bit deeper and to wait for delivery (at least within reason) in order to get the real deal. In the past I have owned several Rolex watches (including a pre-ceramic Daytona, a Submariner and an Explorer) and I've now sold them all. I always had an unpleasant niggling feeling that they were assets which, fine watches as they were, simply didn't have an intrinsic value remotely in line with the price paid. The only one I've kept is a Sea-Dweller ref. 116600 - and I've only rather cynically held onto that because very many people have tipped it to soar in asking price over the next 5 or 10 years. (But I still think it's bat-sh*t crazy, though. If the price does rocket up, I'll take the money and run without a second's hesitation...)

Instead of buying replacement parts for your car, you could just download CAD models and machine them yourself. Someday, making your own custom rolex-quality watches from scratch could be a hobby, where people trade designs and part files online and then make something unique. I could buy a Steinhart for less than a grand which would do all the above, or i could pay even less for a quality clone with exactly the same movement as the Steinhart and even the experts would have difficulty telling the difference without an actual Rolex for comparison. I completely agree with you sir. Rolex as a company need to deal with the whole grey market problem. AD's are selling to grey market dealers who jack up the price. Shows how little Rolex cares about their consumer. You know when apple release a new iphone they limit it to like 1 or 2 per customer. It's to prevent someone from buying up all the stock and charging people an arm an a leg for the product on the grey market. I have no problem with people buying fake Rolex even if they have the money to buy the real thing. The only way I would ever buy a rolex is if I can get them at retail.

I used to have a Rolex Submariner back in mid 1990’s….I loved it for the first week…and then liked it from then on until it needed servicing for about $500…then I just lived with its decreasing time reserve and increasing loss of time. The short of it is that I sold it in the mid 2000’s for about $3500. With that said, I still do like the the watch and the brand but with these super-clones out there….I would not wear one for others thinking it’s a clone…..it really is time to move one to a different slightly more unique…hopefully cheaper brand. Or…perhaps buy an older simple Datejust with its wear marks from its previous owner. The only problem is that they come in at 36 mm at the most…which really is a bit small now. Clearly an old Submariner or GMT will have the 40 mm but you won’t be able to afford it. That’s the end of the Rolex story for me….I’m afraid.

This is an interesting subject. Lets flip this on its head and look at this in a different way. Many of the so called luxury watch brands has all gone through a luxurification process, this iconic model were once taking you back only a couple of hundred bucks to own them and thanks to marketing geniuses, the price has gone up 1000 folds. These advances technologies which produce today the almost exact replica of the real watches just simply reflect on the true cost of making those iconic watches. People buys these watches for 2 things , the complexe mechanism that has gone into the watch which can be past on from generations to generations and then there’s the brand aspect of it. It’s 2020, nobody should buy new watches that costs a fraction of the actual price to produce and use the technology that exists 100 years ago just for the brand name. The more I look at what these luxury watches can do, the less I’m interested in spending money on them just for the status quo.

Rolex does have great margins. Going from almost identical to identical probably costs Rolex $2,000 per watch in Switzerland. Omega makes a great watch and it is almost 1/2 price to Rolex and made in Switzerland also. Grand Seiko finishing is way better than Rolex and also less expensive. Rolex makes a great $5,000 watch and sells it for 50% or more because of brand, marketing etc. and the consumers willingness to purchase.

Actually JLCs are pretty commonly faked. There's some good ones out there trust me. As someone else said here the speedy is one of the very few watches that have yet to receive a decent replica. Chronos in general are hard to replicate and therefore you usually don't see replica Speedmasters.

A couple of years ago whilst on vacation in The Canary Islands I visited a jeweller to look at a grail Omega Speedy. My attention swung to a Rolex Explorer 2 Polar, the jeweller had one to sell straight out of his shop window. Reasonably priced too, but somehow we ended up with him pushing a Longines VHP Conquest Quartz and autos, with offers of a glass of wine whilst trying on a model! I told him ‘Rolex Exp 2 all the way, let’s go my man’ .., He blurted out my commission is more on the Longines and awarded instantly. I put my credit card back in my pocket and walked out of the shop empty handed, but happy. Somethings got to give in this crazy watch industry…
