My 92 year old dad bought this 'Speedmaster' some time in the 60's and still wears it every day. It got serviced a few times but runs just fine. I was a teenager back then and could not believe that my dad would spend 2500 Deutschmark on a wristwatch. I think now he did well.

I am 56 now, got my speedy for my 21st Birthday just the same as my Brothers. Been at sea since 16 and I still am. It's been serviced only only 4 times in those 35 yrs its been my constant companion from Antarctica to the Arctic and most points between. I just buff any marks out of the brushed parts with a scotchbrite and polish the crystal with a bit of toothpaste to take the marks out now and again. I know I am a philistine but the watch still looks great, its loved and Beautiful..... It still keep great time !

I purchased my 3861 saphire on 11/11, Veterans day, a gift to myself. I put it on a strap and wear it 24/7, to sleep, to work out, in the shower for a quick rinse. I'll be swimming with it next week. I contacted OMEGA HQ (not my AD retailer) and asked about swimming and the warranty... no worries. Don't believe me then call them yourself. I'm glad the bezel is aluminum rather than shiny ceramic, should be interesting watching the paint fade from sunlight over the next 40 years. I'm getting +1 second/week. I can live with that :-)

This was the watch I always wanted from when I was around 18, more years ago than I care to remember. I was never in a position to buy one. Then a few months ago I bought myself the brand new 2021 sapphire sandwich. I love it. More importantly, its my watch, and has only ever been mine, so when I ultimately pass it onto my son (hopefully in a fair few years!) he'll appreciate it, all the more.

As a gen Speedmaster owner, I often look at other chrono watches like Tag, Rolex, IWC. And every time again, after a few minutes I look at my Speedy and just go 'nah' over the others. Nothing compares.

As an icon it gets recognition and respect, without ever being flashy or show off. You can wear it anytime/anywhere and it is always seen as a men's jewelry, tool or perfect accessory. It is not a cheap watch, yet considered still one of the "affordable" ones in today's market. It is worn by people that had to save money for a long time to buy their dream and guys that toss out 50k for other watches. That makes it a special watch.

Seeing this makes me love my 1968 speedmaster even more. My dad bought it on December 26th, 1968. I know because I have the box and receipt! He paid $175 at a jewelry store in Sayerville, NJ. When my dad passed away in 2000, I became the keeper of this amazing watch. I still wear it on a regular basis. The 321 movement runs flawlessly.

@@alextee7853 I had it serviced once in 2001. I don't think my dad ever serviced it between 1969-2000. I have taken it to an Omega store a few times in the past 10 years and a quick test showed the amplitude was well within spec. I may get one more service on it in the future.

I bought the out going model (1861) 2 months ago. An absolute dream. Over the new one I prefer the more authentic movement which ties closer to the history, prefer the dial not looking so grainy (once seen I can spot the new model a mile away) and prefer the font placement on the dail. It not costing an extra £1000 was a bonus.

I got a new 1861 hessalite in 2017 with a 20% discount for £2933 so as mentioned in the video “an absolute steal!” The new model has some nice upgrades but another way to look at it is it’s a little further from the 60’s original too. I love my speedy and it always gets regular wrist time.

DISCLAIMER: I purchased my 1st Moon watch today. I compared the 1863 (1861 with the display bits) and the new 3861. It was not an easy decision to make at all. I think I was irritating the AD for quite some time before the pro's and cons for each version were compared and carefully contrasted and ultimately resulted in a draw even with the thousand pound price differential. I was pondering the 1861 and getting the new bracelet as that was the biggest stand out feature with the improved taper. More thoughts popped into my head including the 1861 big box of toys, extra straps, strap tool (I'm unlikely to take off the bracelet) and a medallion if I recall correctly. Unfortunately this box excluded the moon probably due to cost savings somewhere along the line. Ultimately the box with extras would end up in the loft unlikely to be looked at again unless I move house. I ended up with the new 3861 by a whisker, the bracelet is brilliant and is unlikely to be swapped out for something else. I also checked for any 'hot spots' on the case or bracelet and didn't fine any difference on the wrist as some have found circulating within the Madmos interweb. Yes I would have liked the column wheel but the tactile feeling of this cam version feels very close to it. I was just a tad concerned about grafting the coaxial escapement to the 1861 but considering Omega already successfully did this with the Valjoux 7753 on chronograph automatics for a very long time with the 3330 movement if I recall back in the day hopefully I need not worry. I'm very pleased with my purchase. I'm actually over the moon with it.

@@jackwilson5542 No, there's only bracelet removal tool provided and You need a very good properly sized screwdriver to remove the individual links. Besides, this procedure involves heating of the bracelet to loosen Loctite stuff, preventing link screws from undoing themselves - if You're not into modelling or fine mechanics - this procedure is not for the faint-hearted, especially if the watch is new. I was a bit scared to do it myself, but all went OK. I was much more self-confident when I did this later to my Seamaster :) Proper screwdriver, whose blade fully fills the screw slot + propane burner to heat the link locally, gloves and Loctite for fine mechanics for screw it back. Or even better, take it to reliable watch service. But they should know this loctite trick, otherwise it might go sideways.

@@MrSysadmin1975 I sized my new 3861 Speedy bracelet myself. I do have a proper set of watchmakers screwdrivers, and all it took to loosen the screws was to run the bracelet under very hot water for a couple of minutes. Just remember, slow and steady wins the race!

It doesn't make sense in buying a pre-owned speedmaster at this point. Everything I have found is from 20+ years ago and is selling for the mid 4,000 price range with no box/papers and scratched, etc. Better to just get a new one I feel like. Especially if buying the new hesalite version with a small discount negotiated through an AD.

There are still beautiful 861’s out there with tritium dial in mint condition box and papers. I got my 3590.50 for 3.300 eur three yrs ago now it worth around 5k still I think it is a much better deal to get one instead of the new. Same looking bracelet and the yelloe markers are just awsome.

Great watch, and I love it. Though people should be aware that the 3861 movement has teething problems. The chronograph function on my 4 months old hesalite has started acting up (stops at 58 seconds, which also stops the running second and the watch altogether). Did a bit of research and it's not an uncommon ocurrence for people who use the chrono function frequently. Dropped it yesterday at the Omega shop, who told me I should have it back in a couple of weeks. Fingers crossed that they fix the issue permanently.

@@liquidtunes Omega fixed the issue at no charge, since the watch was under warranty. It took them about 1 month. The great thing is they gave me an access code to their service system, where I could see the status of the repair work. Their service was faultless.

@@liquidtunes I am predominantly a Rolex guy for the past 20 years, but I have to say that my experience with Omega is far superior than with Rolex lately. Firstly, you can actually buy most watches from Omega's dealership, and (at least in HK), they are incredibly nice and commercially minded (as opposed to the smugness / contempt you get in most Rolex dealerships). And the service was very quick, as opposed to the months of backlog one would experience if servicing a watch at the Rolex SC.

I had one off putting experience at an Omega boutique here in Dubai where the staff could have been hired from Rolex (hah) and a different more positive one at another boutique where even though the chap was new, was pleasantly forthcoming and helpful. It is in very bad shape with original strap long gone. I would love to get it restored. My father says when he got it serviced years ago, the jeweller swapped movement for a fake inferior movement, but he is not really sure. @@neilbraun11 I meant it would be easy for them to sell just the new (and more expensive) version of the speedmaster. Which would then drive up prices of the older version in grey and used market (as they have now become collectibles, limited supply and all). This happens regularly with Rolex watches, the grey market premiums on even their existing watches go through the roof once “rumours” of an existing model being discontinued hit the market (think hulk, explorer 39, explorer 2 all in the last 2 years). Yet Omega always keeps their watches attainable and there’s almost no secrecy about their supply situation. Here too, they are selling this extremely iconic watch in both it’s iterations and will phase out the model slowly. They do the same with every family of watches. As an enthusiast and a follower of watches, they have my respect for that. It may make them less alluring to some people, but I’m not one of them. Sorry for the long reply. Didn’t want to be misunderstood 🙂

Just got one with saphire.. im impressed how 42mm watch can embrace my tiny wrist like glove. Bracelet is comfy like hell.. it probably more comfy than rolex jubilee. Easily can be one and only watch for some people.. and for me, the only chronograph watch that can fight toe to toe with speedy is Zenith a386

@@danielharyanto6713 mine just stopped on the 4th year..then after the 5th year the chrono pushers would jam. Even after being fully serviced 😦 I just stopped using the chrono after that. Still love the watch. I always get emotional attachments to my watches. I never intend to sell them that's why I am not concerned about telling ppl about the issues with watches I have. Because I intend to keep them don't care about the resale values. Maybe the a384 won't jam as much as it's a simpler Chrono. Mine's got triple calendar+ moonphase. So maybe it's a bit more complicated...

I bought a 3861 sapphire sandwich a few weeks ago and I am absolutely in love. The new links are amazing and look like white gold. You can either have a watch that's been to the moon, or a Rolex that's been with the fishes in the sea. I know which I'm choosing.

The Rolex Daytona back story described as pulp fiction is apropos on a few levels. They do command the exponentially higher price for different reasons, much like how the movie "Pulp Fiction" entertained us and commanded over $200 million worldwide, whilst the documentary "Apollo 11," even with all of its original footage and international film accolades, only saw around $20 million worldwide. The Daytona is the "Indie" blockbuster, and the Speedmaster is the critically acclaimed documentary. Personally, I really like a good documentary.

Just tried the sapphire and hesalite. the size is realllly nice. Nothing gigantic like the seasmaster. Oh and the stainless bracelet is 19.5 mm 😍 This piece really feels nice and perfect. Question of the century remains…sapphire for survival of daily use or hesalite for originality?

I bought the 3861 sapphire. The back edges are super sharp when taking it on and off, also the lume starts off great but fades very quickly IMHO. But I love the watch and wear it daily. It's my only special watch and I have no regrets at all.

Bought an 1863 model sapphire sandwich steel bracelet model for $1000 discount last June from an AD, so the gap to full price which all the AD’s charge now on this new one is pretty giant for fairly modest improvements.

I’m waiting for the new clasp with a micro adjustment on to come out and then I’m going to pull the trigger. This update is excellent. I’ve tried it on a few times now and it’s been improved everywhere especially the fit. It feels like a 40mm watch now and the quality is definitely up another notch. You don’t really need a micro adjustment as the bracelet is so comfortable but apparently theirs one coming so I will wait and see.

Correction: the bracelet on the 3861 is reminiscent of the Ref. 145.022-69 '1969 Apollo XI' Yellow Gold LE, and NOT the original Speedy Pro bracelet, which was a flat link.

These macro shots makes this watch looks much nicer than in real. e.g. The step dial, the depth, the legibility is more pronounced in these macro shots. And when I go to my local AD, I am thinking to myself, is this really the same watch. Still a very nice watch and may be I will get it some day, but it looks much sharper in these videos.

I do prefer the 1861 hesalite. That flatter grey dial really makes the bright white hands pop.. Also love the more busy mili seconds track... and mine is on straps anyway, so I don't see the new bracelet as a factor.... and the movement was used in space for years.... The price is great too. It's still a relative bargain... yes the new one has great features too....(let's not mention sharp edges!)...but the 1861 is the one for me
