they didn’t try to force a false friendship between Torrence and Isis and it’s very honest and mature for the time. They easily could’ve made the Clovers seem like assholes for not wanting to be “friends” - but once Torrence heard Isis, and accepted that she couldn’t deflect blame or pay her way out of their guilt, they actually showed that they were sorry by changing (competing honestly).
@Pinkladyisv4 ай бұрын
It’s one of my favorite things about the movie. The Clovers are upset and get to stay that way without the movie making it seem like they are wrong to feel that way. Also Torrence had her heart in the right place but I love how they had Isis mention that the Clovers didn’t want her to pay their way.

Former cheerleader here. The Spirit Stick was absolutely a thing at the camps I attended, and it looked just like that, but without any bling. It was a real honor for a squad to be awarded the Spirit Stick (usually for the day), because it meant you’d done something that stood out. Not letting it touch the ground was also a thing, although it’s exaggerated for the movie.
@RizzyRapz4 ай бұрын
When Mary said how did the Clovers know they were from the other school you gotta remember that the Toros were the reigning Champs and that the competition is televised so they most likely recognized Torrance from the broadcasts

I forget how young all the movie reactors are, makes me feel old. 😂 At 27:21 Torrence and Aaron are using cordless landline phones, NOT cell phones. She’s not using anyone’s ‘minutes’. When this movie came out, cell phones were not as common as they are today. Now 7 and 8 year olds have them, but back then, they weren’t as common. Rich teenage girls in the 80s and 90s had landlines in their bedrooms, the rest of us just took the cordless into our rooms.

So envious of Mellow getting the chance to watch a couple of films with Mary. She's the best!! And the color coordination was splendid! This film brought Gabrielle Union to the attention of the general public. She was already around 29 when she filmed it but managed to pass for 18-ish. She's carried that youthful look throughout her career on into her 50s now. Kirsten Dunst was ten years younger and actually around 19 while Eliza Dushku (with the admirable hair and a memorable role in the great "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" series) was around 21.

The Clovers girls probably recognized Torrance because she was in the team. The cheer competition was on TV every year and they watched it and saw Torrance in the squad back when big Red was captain. So when Torrance shows up in their school to watch the game with Missy, that could explain it :) And movies of that era had older actors because it wasnt common to use actual teen actors in movies. Especially depending on rating of the movie.

I was a high school cheerleader in the 80's in L.A., and as RIDICULOUS as it is, that "Spirit Stick" thing really was a THING at those cheerleading camps lol. I went to two (at UCLA and San Diego State) and looking back, I think they used that as a means to try to keep hundreds of girls under control with a red/white/blue painted tube of wood - and it largely worked lol. It literally was like a 3-4 day cult when I think about it now 🤣. EDIT: For context, the "Spirit Stick" (maybe 3-5 of them; I honestly don't remember how many squads there were, but there was a TON of girls; boys weren't in cheerleading back then) was rewarded to squads at the end of every day. It was based on a combination of performance during all of the training, and also whether or not we were following the behavioral rules. Getting that cylinder of wood each night was a BIG DEAL if you got one... but you had to give it back the next day. Getting it on the LAST day was EVERYTHING... because that's the one you got to take home... and it was based on the cumulative result of whatever your performance and behavior had been over the whole camp. They really had us worshipping a stick for 3-4 days lol. Cult.
