I may not like spiders, but Charlotte is an exception. She’s sweet, kind, and does everything within her power to keep Wilbur safe from harm. Such a wonderful character.
@nickmanzo8459
@nickmanzo8459 2 жыл бұрын
I think the contrast between her behaviors and the sort’ve thoughts or fears normally associated with spiders was an intentional choice by the writer. Charlotte is a creature normally associated with fear, she is an outcast. No one feeds her as she says, she lives only by her wits. In spite of her predatory nature and almost fatalistic understanding of nature (how easily she accepts her own mortality and her role in keeping insect populations under control), she demonstrates enough compassion to save a pig, only because she likes him.

We used to quote Templeton all the time; “Hooray for Charlotte” and “What thanks do I get for these services, I would like to know?” when being a bit tongue in cheek salty about something. As a child the whole food sequence at the fair fascinated me. As an adult some of the songs make me cry now, they just hit a raw nerve but I think it is a beautiful movie. Yes the animation is not big budget, even for the time, but there is a charm about it.

Paul Lynde as Templeton the Rat was great voice casting, they really could not have picked a better guy to do this voice. He such was a genius at smug but subtle humor and I strongly suspect he influenced the smarmy design of the rat a little. Probably best known now as Uncle Arthur on Bewitched. Taken from us way too soon. One hell of a loss.

Them calling him "some pig" is basically them calling him special, and it basically wasn't a passage of time for that one song, it was just for the visuals since the song was about time. 😂 Also, Charlotte said earlier in the movie that a "spider's life is an uncertain thing", or something like that, so technically, yes, she did know she was dying.

The reason for the cheaper animation is the film is by Hanna Barbera behind many classic shows like Scooby Doo Where Are You, Flintstones, Jetsons, The Tom and Jerru Shorts, etc, The songs are by the Sherman Brothers who worked on Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Mary Poppins, Pooh, Jungle Book and many others, The voice of Charlotte is Debbie Reynolds who was the main girl in Singin in the Rain and would go on to be the Grandma Aggie in the Halloweentown films

I love, love, LOVE the 1998 Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer! That was my first introduction to the Rudolph character/legend, and to me personally it’ll always be “my Rudolph”- it’s the original to me. It was also my first ever Christmas movie I’ve seen as well so even more special bonus points for me. I still have it on VHS and I watch it every year when it comes to Christmas time in December since our vhs player still works :) I also really love the soundtrack. No one’s song about Rudolph has beaten Clint Black’s version in my opinion. Even though the message is a little sad, the “what about his nose?” song is always stuck in my family’s head at our household and we all just randomly sing “Rudolph’s shinnnyyyy nose!” “Yes what about!?” “Rudolph’s shinny nose!”. Debbie Reynolds was and is such a national treasure 💕

For those who weren't around in the 70's, Wilbur is voiced by Laugh-In's Henry Gibson (whom most might remember as the Nazi leader from "The Blues Brothers"), and the stuttering goose was Agnes Moorehead--Who, apart from Citizen Kane, most rerun fans would remember as Endora from the old "Bewitched" sitcom. And growing up in the 70's/80's, even reading the book, we heard Paul Lynde's voice as Templeton.

Oh man what a blast from the past! I remember watching this all the time as a kid! I had both this and the sequel about Wilbur and the three daughters on VHS. I'm amazing at how familiar everything is and yet I'd completely forgotten how old the animation looks and all the songs. I was never bothered by Charlotte or her daughters being spiders despite my arachnophobia but going back now I am a bit creeped out, especially with all the baby spiders 😅. I definitely think nowadays we'd think "Some pig" would mean "some random pig" but back in the day it was used more as "some special pig" or like "That's quite a pig." I also really liked Templeton's character, I found him funny and liked that even as a loner he was important to Charlotte's plans and helped them out a lot. but I could see how he'd be come across as annoying too lol. I'm glad I got to revisit this old movie with you, it's a classic.

One thing that the remake does better than this one is better explaining WHY Fern's dad was gonna kill Wilbur. As a kid it just came across to me as size discrimination (which didn't make any sense). The second one better explains that there were too MANY piglets and there wasn't enough room for Wilbur. He would've starved if the dad didn't kill him and Fern didn't step up to take care of him.

At one fair we occasionally go to my favorite part is the horse shoe :) theres also a dog "talent" show and also plenty of farm animals. It's also nice walking around all the booths and there are carnival rides (although I never go on them) and perfect chance to get a bunch of heart attack inducing fried food 😂🍗🍟🌭

The Sherman brothers, who wrote the music and lyrics for Mary Poppins, also did the music and lyrics for this movie. Also Danny Bonaduce from the Patridge Family did the voice of Avery, Fern's brother.

This version is actually pretty accurate to the book, but one scene I feel should've made it in, but for budget reasons, I guess I can let it slide: In one scene, Fern's mother is speaking with Fern's doctor because she's worried about her mental state, but the doctor tells her that Fern is perfectly fine because if a spider's web can miraculously spell words, who's to say that she couldn't talk to animals? At least that's what I thought when reading that part

That scene is in the live-action remake. I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it. It's just as good as the animated version, if not a little bit better.

The music is by the Sherman Brothers, who are most well known for their work with Disney mainly during the 1960‘s and 1970‘s writing songs for movies such as Mary Poppins, Winnie the Pooh, The Jungle Book, The Sword in The Stone, and The Parent Trap among others. They also did do music for other studios during this time, like Charlotte‘s Web here, Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang and some others. Beyond movies, Richard and Robert Sherman also wrote songs for Disney theme parks attractions, including “The Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room” from Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, “It’s a Small World”, “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” and “The Best Time of Your Life” from the Carousel of Progress, “One Little Spark” from Journey into Imagination, “Miracles from Molecules” from Adventure Thru Inner Space, “Magic Journeys” from the 3-D film of the same name and “Meet the World” from an attraction of the same name.

Wow, thank you so much for reacting to this film. This film holds a special place in my heart because one, the story, characters, etc. are great, and two, according to my parents, I apparently had this movie memorized by heart, most notably when Templeton sings his number while being a glutton at the fair. Anyway, thanks again for talking about this one! I’d say maybe 9/10 for me. Then again, I haven’t watched this film in years. So we’ll see if it still holds up years later, eh? Anyway!

I love Templeton❤. My 3 favorite lines of his: 1. “I’m hiding down here and I don’t want to be stepped on, or kicked in the face, or crushed, or bruised, or lacerated, or scarred, or biffed…” 😂😂😂 2. “How should I know? I suppose the next thing you want me to fetch is a dictionary.” 3. “Is this true? Is this appetizing yarn of yours true?”

John Arable was going to kill Wilbur for being the runt of the litter, that is the smallest size. You saw how Wilbur struggled failing getting to his mother to suckle her milk, he would have starved to death or grown so weak that he would have died young. He was gonna kill him to not make him suffer, a mercy kill if you will. Sure, it seems cruel but quite logical when you think about it and like the narrator said, he wasn't looking foward to do it, he didn't want to but he had no choice. Than goodness that Fern interviened and that John accepted her to keep Wilbur as a pet.

Fun fact: Zuckerman's Famous Pig song have been "covered" by swedish comedy duo Magnus Härenstam och Brasse Brännström, into the humoristic song Svordomsvisan (The Swearing Song), though containing a few actual swedish curse words, it mostly consists of weird insults that are pretty tame by today's standards (if that version was translated back, it might get the Explicid label as the US is so sensative when it comes to swearing, despite it's pretty tame to us swedes).

I wish Wilbur could stay inside too, but have you seen how large pigs can get? They'd have to reinforce the house to let him in! |D Also shout out to Debbie Reynolds! She was Carrie Fisher's mother, if that helps you picture who she is? She was also in Singing in the Rain. :) (Fun fact? The thing the spiderlings are doing at the end is called "ballooning".)

This movie was done by Hanna-Barbera, the studio who was more famously known for doing Scooby-Doo, Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Johnny Quest, The Smurfs (based on Peyo's comics) and in the latter years 2 Stupid Dogs and Swat Kats. The studio was bought up by Warner Bros and were absorbed by them after the deaths of their creators Joesph Barbera and William "Bill" Hanna. The songs were done by The Sherman Brothers (Richard M and Robert B Sherman) who famously did songs for Disney including for Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, the Winnie the Pooh shorts which later were edited into The Many Adentures of Winnie the Pooh, Miracles from Molecules for Adventures Thru Inner Space ride at Disneyland (now defunct since it was replaced by Star Tours in the 80's) and There's A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow for The Carousel of Progress (which was first used at New York's World Fair in 64 and 65, then moved to Disneyland after it was closed down). Later they returned to Disney to make songs for The Tigger Movie and Piglet's Big Movie.

Rats are actually very picky eaters thanks to a peculiar feature of their digestive systems; rats are incapable of vomiting. One of the purposes of vomiting is as an emergency evacuation of toxins before they can enter the rest of the body, so rats need to be careful of what they eat. While they can stomach rotten food up to a point, this is generally as a last resort if there's nothing fresh around. The best things in the world to a rat are fresh fruits and berries. If the farmer had an apple tree or a berry bush, Templeton would never have left for leftovers.
