The actual murderer got caught a few years ago, already serving jailtime for raping and killing his underage sister-in-law. The whole case is really horrific but interesting that this used to be one of Korea's biggest unsolved mysteries for decades.

another fact that from a tv show, a profiler commented the reason the killer stopped murdering ppl is that, he died or he is in prison for other crimes and few years later the killer got exposed with his crime by confest while he is locked up in jail.

According to the director, the last scene included a close-up of the criminal's face to indicate that he would be arrested, assuming he was watching the movie.

This is based on true story at korea in 1980s and I’m sure this is way better than Parasite. If Bong Joon-ho had been known in USA at that time, he would’ve already won Oscar.

The word used on Baek's armband is "crackdown". For example, there were many indiscriminate logging activities because the main fuel in Korean rural communities at that time was wood. There were officials monitoring these illegal things and it's the armband they used. At that time, Korea needed to correct moral discipline and at the same time was a period of military dictatorship, so the armband was also a symbol of violence against the ignorant public. To childlike Baek, it would have looked like a symbol of a strong man.

There is a serial murder case of Lee Chun-jae as a case similar to this movie. He was raped, murdered, and served his sister-in-law in prison after a persistent investigation by investigators, and he also saw this movie. But he was not punished for the expiration of the statute of limitations.

As you know, this movie is based on a true story, and at the time this movie was made (2003), the criminal had not been caught. Then, in 2019, the real culprit, Lee Chun-jae, was arrested using newly developed DNA restoration technology. Lee Chun-jae had already been sentenced to life imprisonment for another crime (1994) and was serving time in Busan Prison. He watched this movie in prison and said he felt nothing. With this, this cold case has been solved.

I think it is a movie with a sad smile that is difficult for foreigners to feel. As it is known, Korea has undergone a change to a high-tech society in a very short period of time. In the 1980s, Korea underwent tremendous political, economic, and intellectual changes, and the serial murder case covered by the film was then. In fact, even though it was a very simple case, we couldn't catch the culprit at the time due to a lack of technology as well as problems in the bureaucracy. Many innocent men were caught and tortured by the police, one of whom committed suicide by jumping into the railway as in the movie due to aftereffects, and another committed suicide in other ways. Police falsified evidence, and the wrong person was made into the criminal, resulting in 25 years of unfair imprisonment. He could not be exonerated until the real culprit was caught recently. The victim woman in the movie saw the face of the criminal, so there was a montage based on the woman's testimony, and it was exactly the same as the face of the criminal. The suspect was living in the same neighborhood where the serial murder took place, but he was not suspected as a suspect due to a false blood test. With the development of DNA testing technology, the culprit was caught a few years ago, but it became a very bitter and despondent memory. It's very interesting that it makes Westerners feel that it's a good movie, even though it's hard to feel the emotions of the movie if you're not a middle-aged or older Korean.

19:03 애국 조회 Patriotic Morning Orientation (during the military dictatorship, for brainwashing education purposes) This Korean film is based on a true story from the military dictatorship in Korea in the 1980s. 31:25 The words written on the yellow armband on Gwangho's arm, a fool, are 단속(dansok)control(crackdowns). It has various meanings, such as control, suppression, etc. There may be issues such as parking, traffic order for street vendors in markets and sidewalks, forest fire prevention, and redevelopment demolition order, etc. During the korean military dictatorship, it was also used as an armbands for suppression of the press, surveillance of government offices, and monitoring of elections(Including election fraud). In fact, it symbolizes one of the armbands used to suppress the civilians, media, and intellectuals by soldiers and public authorities. Although there are black comedy elements in the movie, it actually shows the actual behavior of detectives, soldiers, and crackdown squads at the time. In particular, during the military dictatorship, in the name of war on crime, students who opposed the military dictatorship were forced to serve in the military, and intellectuals were sent to Samcheong Education Center along with criminals to undergo mental brainwashing education that involved abuse and massacre. The director seems to have hinted at the social atmosphere of the movie with the armbands and the detectives committing violence against innocent citizens. This foolish Gwangho crackdown armband also symbolizes such a foolish military dictatorship. Perhaps the death of this foolish crackdown fool symbolizes the self-destruction of a foolish military dictatorship that goes against the trend of the times like a running train or the trend of democracy. The director asks the question of who the real culprit is in this unresolved case given the circumstances of the time. The movie ends by asking that question with a close-up shot of the final (Park)detective's face. If you watch the movie again with the director's intention in mind, the movie and director will feel different. fool's armband, fool's inquiry

There is also a scene where a fool wearing an armband hangs from a telephone pole, possibly symbolizing the old proverb of a foolish man who climbed a tree to save a fish, or as a harsh treatment of the military or student intellectuals who participated in the democratic uprising at the time by having them hang from a telephone pole or pole in the same manner. It symbolizes action.

Have you watched David Fincher's ZODIAC? Hard not to compare the two. I think they caught the person who was the serial killer in his movie in the late 2010s. Zodiac came out after this movie, but, of course, Fincher is Fincher. Bong has more comedic elements, but he contrasts the country cop who are bungling with the city cop who is more professional. But much like ZODIAC, even the city copy becomes frustrated he can't solve this despite being smarter than the country cops. Go see Every Frame a Painting for this movie, to get an interesting take on this.

Bong Joon-ho never disappoints, as do your decisions regarding which movies to bring to the channel. Not many people are willing to give a chance to movies outside of mainstream circles. Very much in the style of this film, I would recommend 'La Isla Mínima' (Marshland), a police drama set in the south of Spain, with a couple of policemen of opposite ideologies in the 80', also very much like True Detective.

is this version color graded? Why did they do that? I don't understand,. The original print looked much more natural, this looks stale and washed out. Maybe for a purpose. And you are right about 3:07 the checkered shirt being similar. That is, I would dare say, arguably one of the most crucial hints from the director, that he left to see through the story on the surface.

Oh man I LOVE this movie. It's still my favorite one from Bong Joon-Ho's impressive filmography. But man oh man do I hate the "remastered" and recolored version by Criterion. The one you watched is super washed out and has that ugly green tint. I highly recommend the original color version that most people saw.
