A lot of psychologists have said that Gomez and Morticia have the healthiest relationship, and the Addamses the healthiest and most loving family life, of any seen in media. They're always unswervingly supportive of each other, they share and indulge one another's interests, and even when there seems to be a betrayal, they never, ever give up on each other. The fact they're weird and goth doesn't change a damn thing about how loving and accepting they are. And yes, Wednesday is AWESOME - when I was ten, Wednesday was my first celebrity crush.

The Addams family are NOT monsters or magic. They are just normal people who delight in the macabre and horrific. The exact opposite of the Munsters, where the comedy comes from the fact that they actually are monsters who act like normal people

I found that the Addams Family was more entertaining than the Munsters. It was a poor attempt from that network to try to come up with something to compete with the Addams Family.

Sorta... The storyline goes that they themselves are only partially human, due to being the descendants of monsters. While not outright vampires or werewolves, like the family from Dark Shadows franchise, the Addams family had abilities akin to the Dorian Grey variety (being blessed/cursed with extreme durability), hence why being stabbed, poisoned and electrocuted on a regular basis didn't faze them.
@thomaskilroy4573
@thomaskilroy4573 3 жыл бұрын
@Seasick Viking I don’t know where the hell you got all that from but it’s bullshit. Their family were ancestrally Spanish who crossed the ocean to Florida and quickly left for New York after being repulsed by all the retired old people. The whole point is that they are humans who are just quirky in the true sense of the word. They live through things that would kill most people and have a Frankenstein’s monster as a butler. But if you actually try and assume they have special powers or are anything other than creepy, kooky etc. Then you are really thinking too much into it. It’s not supposed to be taken seriously at all. They are absolutely human. Just not ‘normal’, because they choose not to be.

Rumour has it when the 60s tv series came out it was aimed at adults but the kids enjoyed watching it as well - not only because of the quirkiness of the house and the family (and some level of a love of morbidness the authors of Horrible Histories knew many children have), but also because when asked many children allegedly said "The mommy and daddy love each other".

It's funny that you mentioned Cher possibly playing Morticia. She was considered, but like other roles for iconic characters, people would just see Cher being a character instead of simply seeing Morticia. For example, Christopher Reeve was cast as Superman because he was an unknown actor. Audiences would see Superman on screen instead of a big name actor in a costume.

The reason the Addams’ are so wealthy is a combination of inherited wealth (through pirate ancestors) and the fact that Gomez Addams is one of the most successful investors in literary history. He invests in things that would never seem to return a profit, yet somehow so long as Gomez is involved they do. He once bought a swamp no one wanted and it had a massive oil deposit. He own numerous crocodile farms which he named “Crocodiles Unlimited.” He is quite literally one of the top 10 wealthiest characters in literary history.

None of the Addams' are supernatural per se, they're described in their old tv show as 'creepy and kooky', so really they're gothic eccentrics, albeit with the hint of superhuman traits to emphasise their unusualness. The irony and what makes the satire great though is that their customs and mannerisms appear weird but they are still far more functional than the 'normal family'. Gomez and Morticia are still passionately in love with one another and their children are free-spirited. The cast as well delivered spectacularly, young Christina Ricci as Wednesday, Anjelica Hutson as Morticia, Christopher Lloyd as Fester (he is the real Fester, he had amnesia but the lightning from the book restored his memories) and the ever charismatic Raul Julia as Gomez.

What I really like about this movie is that it actually makes the Addams family look like true aristocrats. For example, in most adaptations Morticia usually wears a narrow black dress, but here she actually wears different outfits at different time of the day, some of them decorated with semi-precious gems. And did you know that Wednesday was named as a result of a nursery rhyme? Wednesday's child is full of woe (in the classic version, the only unlucky child)

As Schomforce mentioned, the characters are based on a comic by Charles Addams which ran in The New Yorker Magazine. Many jokes in the film were lifted straight from the comics. Originally, they were known as The Family. Charles Addams was the creator so they became The Addams Family. In the ‘60s, it was developed into a television sitcom. The sitcom was more of a wacky take on the material. The movie took a different approach and gave it more of a darker humor, like the source material. I love both versions. There have been failed attempts to relaunch a tv series and a made for TV movie. There was also a kids cartoon series and the Addams Family also were guest stars on The Scooby Doo Mysteries. Definitely check out Addams Family Values for more dark fun. Oh I forgot, within the past few years there was an animated feature, and now the sequel is in theaters,. The characters design is the most like Charles Addams original comics.

Raul Julia is one of those actor's actor. He might be in bad movies (not this one), but he would always give 110% in every roll. Julia's death left the world a lesser place. Fun Fact: The actors were concerned about the ambiguity of the big Fester storyline. Initially, it was going to be unknown if Gordon, the man suffering from memory loss who looks just like Uncle Fester, was actually Fester. The cast members nominated Christina Ricci to give an impassioned plea to Scott Rudin and Barry Sonnenfeld two weeks before shooting, that Fester should not be an impostor. Sonnenfeld remembered that the only cast member to not care was Christopher Lloyd, the man playing Fester.

What makes the Addams so great, is in my opinion that they are a great satire of "mainstream" and "society". I was and still am active in diverse subcultures and I can really relate to the Addams, they are not evil, just different and want to live their lifes just like everybody else. Of course, it is all over the top in the movie and the TV show, but there is some truth in it. We all know characters like the girl scout or the judge who look down at you just because you are different. Obviously, the movie has the perfect cast! Everybody is fitting in the role, I just love it! Oh, and "Gordon" IS Fester, he just lost his memory and got it back in the end...

I can't speak of Charles Adams original cartoons, but the T.V Series and these movies I can speak on. The biggest thing to reflect on is what are the values they hold and how are they viewed. Everyone around them finds them freaky, odd, scary but in reality they hold dearly to values that many "normal" people don't. They are a close knit family. The parents love each other even in the low points of their lives without bickering over petty things. The parents pay attention to and care for their children. They are accepting of everyone without regard to beliefs, race, economic status or sex and allow them to be themselves. They are comfortable being exactly who they are without feeling the need to put on a false façade to fit in. There are many other qualities they hold. I encourage you to seek out and find the original T.V series to watch. While it is a comedy, pay attention in episodes how they interact with "normal" people and their own family.

The director , Barry Sonnenfeld, was the Coen Bros DP for all their early works until Barton Fink. He not only directed this but also Men in Black...he's also had some stinkers like Wild Wild West and Nine Lives.

Gomez and Morticia are by far the best couple I've ever seen in film oddly enough. They aren't just a loving couple who absolutely adore each other, they're a fully functional partnership whose differences completely complement and Inspire each other. They are awesome!

Wednesday is awesome! I somewhat disagree with your assertion that it doesn’t give any deep messages. The message overall is that family is important. As weird & creepy as they may be, they’re a great family. The parents are completely enamored with each other, the kids love & respect their parents, and the parents are so supportive of their children. And at the end of the movie, all that matters is that they held their family together and regained Fester as a caring member of that family.

The rug was a polar bear not a dog. They created a special light so Morticia always had light focused on her eyes.

I am so in love with this movie and cast. I am old enough to have seen the re-runs of the black and white series on TV and loved it so when this came out, I had to go watch it. It's been one of my favorite movies. It's just fun. Really fun. The entire family is just perfect. Good times. 😎

This family became so popular, by showing audiences that however wierd someone may seem, if have love, they are wonderfully situated in the world, whatever others may think...and that however normal others may seem, if they lack that one quality, they are all too likely to fall into selfish and deceitful ways.

My dad watches the 1960s TV series all the time. The Addam's Family isn't a supernatural family, per say. They're just highly eccentric. Only Thing and Cousin Itt are the supernatural elements, and everything else is due to cartoon physics. One of the main themes of the show is that being [extremely] different doesn't necessarily mean you're a bad person, and they illustrate this by making the "normal" people the dysfunctional jerks while the Addams' are loving and supportive to a fault.

The Addams family aren't magical. They are, however, creepy and cooky. Some say they're mysterious and spooky, and even altogether ooky.

The Addams family are not mystical or magical creatures. They're regular humans who just live their lives as they please. They're based on a series of print cartoons in The New Yorker magazine by cartoonist Charles Addams. He never even named the characters, originally. The opening credits scene of this movie, where the Addamses drop boiling oil on Christmas carolers is taken direct from one of Chas Addams's magazine cartoons. The characters were named and fleshed out when the popular series of cartoons were spun off into the 1960s tv sitcom "The Addams Family," which gave us the iconic music themes as well. You should definitely check that out. There was also a more recent series remake on tv, which is pretty good, too. Some of it is a rehash of the old series and some episodes are original content. And these movies with Angelica Houston and Raul Julia are great additions to the franchise. By the way, the tv family sitcom that did feature mystical creatures was The Munsters, which was contemporary with The Addams Family and is a lot of fun, too.

Morticia cutting the flowers off and leaving the stems is a nod to the original TV series; same thing happened there. So is Fester and the light bulb. See "Addams Family Values" - it's even better, IMHO.

Mondays are manic, Wednesdays are awesome. Charles Addams did a series of cartoons for the New Yorker magazine called the Addams Family - they were pretty much as you see them here - one memorable strip had them ready to pour boiling oil on Christmas carolers at their door. The strip usually didn't have dialog - just a creepy, kooky image - and the characters didn't have names until the TV show. Of the original cast only Lisa Loring (Wednesday) and Samwise Gamgee's (adoptive) father, John Astin (Gomez), are still alive. Tim Burton is doing an 8 episode series featuring Wednesday Addams for Netflix. It's a coming of age story and a murder mystery set at Nevermore Academy. (I'm like 843 - c'mon folks add a like - I really want to see Nasser's reaction to Values - can't decide which I like better. Favorite line in this one "Are they made with real girl scouts?" - favorite line in the sequel (censored for a little spoiler) "Oh ** **!! That takes me back!!!!")

0:49 You do understand that the boiling oil they were about to pour on the carol singers - they're not trying to hurt them or be mean.....it's just their way of welcoming in outsiders to family Christmas traditions

Wednesday Addams is my favorite character. If I ever have a daughter, I'm naming her Wednesday. The old black and white tv show was pretty good too. All the cleverness and humor is the same, and the movie captured it wonderfully. On your own time, you can watch a few of the tv show, it's pretty good. Although Morticia Addams in the tv show is the spotlight taker. She was a really good actor.

You have to see Adams Family Values. Also, what about the relationship between Gomez and Morticia. It is an obsession, the rest of the world takes a back seat to it. It is the kind. Of relationship people die from.

Funny story, the role was originally made for Cher, but they thought it would be too high profile to have such an iconic women be in the role. When they approached Angelica she told them this role is more for Cher and why don't they ask her. It's a cool story of how even the actress felt the role was more fit for Cher, but alas she kills it in this role!
