This is no coincidence. He is the devil and that's exactly what the scene should show. That's why he makes no attempt to extinguish it. Ellie is the light in the darkness and he tries to seduce her.

Not only that, but at one point they cut to Joel, working his way through the snow to get to Ellie and I think the juxtaposition was great: one hateful selfproclaimed ”father” stood in the raging fire (at one point even looking like a dark void among the hot flames) eager to consume Ellie and then there was Joel, the true Father struggling in the bright coldness to save and preserve her out of love. Loved it.

I think as well at that point in time she doesn't know if Joel is alive or dead too, so she probably thought that was it. I like how Joel didn't come in and save Ellie at the end but rather they both fought through their own hell to reunite with each other in the end... And in the final moment of triumph over their battles they both realized how much they actually mean to each other now.

Loved your reaction. A few things if I may: 1) They really didn’t leave any imagination behind with what David’s intentions were and that was even more terrifying. 2.) Bella Ramsey captured Ellie’s trauma response so beautifully. Ellie takes all of her pent up anger, rage, pain, grief and trauma thus far on to David and is completely overcome. The thousand-yard stare, screams, wide eyes, shock, and disassociation was so heartbreaking. David preys on her worst fear, which is that she’ll end up alone, and in the moment she leaves the burning building, she truly believes she’s all alone. So when she sees Joel, not only is she reeling from her trauma, this is the first time she’s seeing him okay after he’s been injured for the last several days. 3.) I love how Pedro delivered Joel’s line “Hey, look, it’s me-it’s okay baby girl” with such a tenderness and comfort. Joel doesn’t even know what happened to her, he just knows this terrified, traumatized little girl needs his assurance and love. I think this is the first time we’re hit with the reminder that Ellie can be both a spunky, badass teen, and a traumatized little girl needing a hug. I’ve heard from many people who’ve experienced SA that the end scene was so moving because that’s just what you should do for someone who’s been immediately traumatized. Pedro and Bella are perfectly cast, they deserve all the awards, and this show is just too flipping good! ❤

It goes without saying that Bella and Pedro acted the HELL out of this episode, but Scott Shepherd (David) was amazing too. I got a bad vibe immediately, but when he said to Ellie "you're quite the hunter" in that patronizing voice I knew he was bad news. The "is this a cult leader wanting young bride kinda thing" is very much the case, especially since David makes a statement "we must secure our future" which the writers included as a reference to the fourteen words, a white supremacist saying and their whole thing is about "traditional" marriages with young white brides having lots of babies for the race war they believe is coming.

"If you lost in the darkness, look for the light" If Ellie was the light in the darkness, there is not much left of it now. For Joel, it's still enough. He regains his light through her, at the same time she loses hers through him and this world. Another low point for Ellie and a turning point for her. Here the animal in Ellie came out with her overkill and the experience she had to make. Almost r*p*d and eaten. Here she experiences for the first time the worst abysses in man. I think if you've seen Ellie's past reactions to losses, there wasn't much anger involved. She swallowed Sam's death completely. Here in her outburst really everything came out, which was not seen before. There is no way back for her. She will not be the same anymore. The episode is also important for the future. It shows what Ellie is capable of. A dark side in her that people like David recognize. Another very good change to the game was to show that Joel didn't manage to interrupt Ellie's Overkill. So this scene ran much longer than in the game. Which shows that Ellie does not come to an end so easily when she has started something based on her emotions. Her emotions/charakter don't allow that. This wasn't just an overkill, this was an over-overkill. We learned that David and James use codes when they speak. So it is easy to imagine that they did not spoted a deer but humans. The conversation they had about how much to eat they still have was certainly coded. Three human bodies were hanging there. That's what should last another week or two. Then they decided to go hunting after a "deer". The four men David sent out two episodes ago were certainly also on the hunt for people. That's why Joel was directly attacked. Even though David says that only a few people know and he certainly believes that, I think everyone there knows what they are eating. They are all afraid of David and he is their provider after all. No one asks questions because nobody wants to hear the answer, but everyone knows. If you say something, it becomes true. For them, David is God and every time David speaks of God or Father, he means himself. The story David told Ellie by the fire is certainly not true either. He said they were ambushed by raiders after they fled Pittsburgh. I'm sure they didn't escape them, they ate them and they certainly weren't raiders. He just wanted to have Ellie's trust. He wanted to be her good new father. The father of the girl Joel killed will always be with her. She certainly wasn't hungry after that. After all, mommy cooked him well. And of course, David has real penicillin for Ellie. They don't want to eat infected meat. It bothered me at first that none of the people of the city showed up at the end. But of course, the rest of the people didn't realize what was going on. The weather is shit and cold. They will sit in their houses and scrape the remains of the girls daddy out of their teeth. Okay, enough of the macabre. 😁 I also think it's cool and urgently needed that the torture scene actually showed us explicitly how Joel has proceeded over the last 20 years. This was the first time it was really shown why everyone was afraid of Joel in episode 1. This is Joel we know and he liked it. This is Joel when Ellie is not with him. A nice Tess callback from Ellie in the conversation with David. "Your (our) luck had to run out sooner or later." were Tess's words shortly before she had shown Joel her bite. Troy Baker (Game Joel) as James was sensationell good. I didn't think that one day I would have to see Ellie kill Joel. There will be properly another timejump. At the beginning of the next episode they will already be in Salt Lake City. Also, we'll see Ashley Johnson, who was Ellie in the game.

Again some insights on the episode, no native speaker like I said before. Hope I ll write everything as understandable as possible. I don't know if other people already wrote it but yes, James the one who gets killed by Ellie before David when she says she is infected , is played by Troy Baker, the videogame Joel. What you said at the end that you expect Joel to save Ellie is exactly what the Showrunners wanted but then didn't do. Joel saves Ellie but more with her emotions. She lost it while, killing David. She snapped. In the video game Joel stops her from slicing up David after six or seven hits. In the show he doesn't. They ran into each other outside. I counted it. Ellie hits David 21!!! times which is way more traumatizing. (was a bag filled with sand if I am not mistaken) Bella was amazing. Especially when she runs into Pedro Pascal at the end. This was shot before the killing David scene. At the beginning she talks with a deep voice to James and David because she wants to be in a controlling position which she is not because David sees right through her. With the word "medicine" she cant control herself and switches into her childish high voice because she cares desperately for Joels life. I like those little details. And on the horse thing, of course it's not real but I can feel you. In the game Ellie kills a rabbit. With a bow. Right to the throat. That's the first scene after Joel loses conscious and falls off from the horse. Then black screen, followed by the little rabbit coming out of his hole and woosh, arrow flies in from the right. Rabbit dead😅 And you play as Ellie for some time then. First time in the game. So the rabbit in the show is a little Easter egg to that scene from the game but this time he survives because Ellie stumbles and falls into the snow. The horse scene, it was a horse looking thing on rails or sth. So no real horse even involved. Next week season finale....can't believe we are already there.. Put on your seat belt Kelsea. Things are about to go down 😉😉 Have a nice week!

Something you may find interesting, since I see lots of comments pointing out the original Joel and Ellie cameos, is that they were not the “voice actors”. Voice actor implies voice over, which belittles the fact that they fully acted the whole thing on stage for the games, so they’re actors. What’s more, they actually personally came up with a ton of dialogue and character development that made it into the show. For example, when Joel gets to Ellie here, holding her face and calling her “baby girl” was all Troy’s idea. Ellie’s love of space and dinosaurs, puns, learning to whistle, and bossing Joel around were Ashley’s ideas. With all that, they don’t like their contributions being simplified to just “voice actor”. Just some hopefully interesting info I thought you might like. Really liked the reactions, looking forward to the finale!

@@elbruces A voice actor is a good role and it deserves more appreciation than it usually gets, but providing the voice is absolutely less than providing the voice, motions, and development. You wouldn’t call Pedro the voice actor for Mando, or RDJ the voice actor for Iron Man, so why is Troy the voice actor for Joel? It would be easier to call him “the actor”, so specifying “voice actor” disregards all his other contributions.

Agreed and that's saying something considering she was super gung ho about killing some kids. David is horrifying though because people like him exist in this world too and they hide it extremely well. He's a groomer, cult leader, pedophile, and master manipulator. Every single word he said to Ellie was just an attempt to manipulate her into dropping her guard and trusting him. At first he was quite charming, but ever so slowly he pulls back the curtain and gives you a glimpse of who he really is, until finally the episode ends with him surrounded by fire as if he's the devil himself. He really seemed quite comfortable there, didn't he? The way the show runners show this progression is master class as well. The uneasiness they make you feel just grows and grows and grows as the episode goes on and you realize more and more that something is not right here. Sorry for the long comment but man I loved this episode, as terrifying as it was.

There were 5 vicious murders in this episode. This is the creator's point. We now know how cruel & ruthless Joel is & that his worst characteristics have rubbed off on Ellie. It's really important to understand this for what's to come. So often, we're encouraged to excuse violence committed by the "heroes", maybe even celebrate it. Not here. It's brutal & gross & traumatic. You should look up some interviews with the creator. Neil is brilliant & he gets the greater human condition better than most.

@Kelsea's Comments Understandable, if a little Kathleen. But then that's the central thesis of this project, to get us to confront these complicated feelings. No one wants to think they're the bad guy, but in someone's world they are.
@KelseasComments
@KelseasComments Жыл бұрын
I mean, I personally see a LOT of very distinct differences between Kathleen's situation and Joel's. But even with that said, I agree that's one of the themes of the show, I just am personally not emotionally attached to being "good". Especially not in a world like that. I would do atrociously evil things to get my child back if any of them were ever taken from me and I wouldn't feel an ounce of shame or guilt because of it. The men Joel was torturing were kidnappers. They had attacked first, followed them, and kidnapped his child. And he wasn't just getting revenge like Kathleen. Ellie was still alive, and in danger. Doing whatever needs to be done (to bad people who deserve it) to save a child that is in danger (but that can still be saved) is very different than getting revenge (that won't bring anyone back to life) even to the extent that you're willing to harm innocent people and children that weren't at fault. So I guess my point is, I think Joel and Kathleen's situation is very different, but even with that said, I am not one who would struggle with the desire to "be good" in these situations. I would gladly lean on any evil within me if it meant I could protect my kids lol.

What you just described is exactly the process he used to develop the story. Tribalism, family, love & the horrible things that those things will make us do...or not. Because there are other ways, as Tommy said. Anyways, since I know all this & how fucked up things get from here, my perspective is a little different. But I will say that Neil has you right where he wants you at this point. & that's a testament to great art.

Another comment I had read said the Davids inner circle talked in code about the cannibalism stuff. When they were talking about food they had left Venison = adult male Elk = adult female Rabbit = children / adolescents Also when James said they thought they saw a couple of deer, could mean they saw a few people they could take out easily. This could be ellie and Joel leaving signs they were there and they picked up on it. This is also supported in the scene when David tells James to go get the medicine, that it isn’t a code or anything and he is saying what he means right now. Makes it very chilling to think about how they instantly went for the kill on Joel and Ellie at the university. Those men were out looking for supplies, just different supplies than you and I… 😮

@@KelseasComments Honestly I find the cannibalism the least .. concerning? I mean even the going out for supplies and killing anyone you run into is very bog standard surviving an apocalypses they just need the "food" of the people they kill in this situation. Given the groups lack of food I don't think the fact that they turned to eating people a "bad thing". David has a LOT of horrible traits and story arcs but at least in the show I feel hes pretty justified in the cannibalism. Taking it to the extremes that he probably did, like feeding that girl her own father, is just more horrible David. But I feel like that whole group gets this bad rep as "cannibals" when in reality even the ones who know probably just want to survive its not some weird psychopathic thing for them and I can't blame them for that.
@EsperUltima

I believe they're not necessarily prefer cannibalism. David is a lot of things but he's pretty honest (manipulative people tend to be honest). They only resorted to cannibalism when there is no animal meat available, as you can see how James kinda hesitant to eat during the dinner scene. When their people said they think they saw a deer, that could mean the deer Ellie shot, which sort of presenting the possibility for Ellie's encounter with it as well which created their entire encounter.

It's interesting how perspective can affect how we react to things. There's a good chance most of those towns people had no idea what James and David were doing, and that little girl at the start only knew someone murdered her father. A father that did dark things to provide for and protect his daughter, likely even killing innocent people. Same thing Joel does and has done. But there's no sympathy for anyone outside of the people we follow. There's probably a good chance the remaining victims of David in that town will die to starvation now given how little food they had left. Whether the men who Joel killed were guilty or innocent aside, it's likely they were the towns healthiest and ablest remaining hunters if they were already rationing food that already has very little nutrition.

@@KelseasComments I never said those things are equivalent. I respect your feelings that an innocent deer dying to feed people is more impactful than a person dying while trying to kill someone. I just feel that the Last of Us doesn't work in an understanding of "innocent" because Joel and Ellie themselves are not innocent. One of the biggest dichotomies in the Last of Us is that Joel and Ellie are people capable of intense horrific violence, but also capable of love and warmth for people they care for. Joel before this has been a raider, a murderer, and a thief who was and is really good at killing people. Joel is not a good man regardless of him taking in Ellie and protecting her. By the same virtue Ellie is a girl who shot a boy probably not older than 19 or 21 in the back (to defend Joel yes) and paralyzed him. The Last of Us shows us that innocence in this world is not possible anymore and in this very episode we see Ellie lose that final piece of innocence when she hacks a man's face into burger meat with a meat cleaver. Was she defending herself? Yes. Is it justifiable? Absolutely. Is killing a deer worse than that? I don't think so but that's my opinion.
@KelseasComments
@KelseasComments Жыл бұрын
@@JackToeRip ya but I think that's where I disagree with a lot of people. I've gotten a lot of similar comments saying stuff like "well Joel and Ellie aren't innocent either." And "Joel used to murder people too." But first of all, we haven't seen Joel do any of that. We are given some hints and told that he killed innocent people and that he feels guilty. But that was a long ass time ago. We're not watching him do it NOW. If I was watching him hurt innocent people then I'd feel differently. But people are allowed to change. And we don't know the specifics of what he did. So we really can't use him to compare in a debate. As far as the present goes, we have only seen Joel and Ellie hurt people out of self defense or defense of each other. And I don't see that as not being innocent. In terms of Ellie having to grapple with what she's done then of course it's not an easy thing to do. And I get what you mean by it taking a part of her innocence. But I REALLY don't see it as anything but self defense. I don't see it as her sinking to their level, I don't see it as comparable to what they did. Was it hard for her and will it affect her for life? Probably. But I don't find it comparable in the slightest. Even Joel torturing those men. They attacked him, kidnapped his daughter, and tried to kill him again. I don't see him torturing them to save Ellie as anything else but justified. I find it wildly unfair to put him in the same box as those other men because of what he did, and because of very vague things we know about him from a very very long time ago. Do I think Joel did awful stuff he regrets now? Yep. Do I think he ever kidnapped a young girl and wanted to eat her? No. I know they've hinted at him killing people but I think to compare him to people who are willing to do those things is taking it a little far. So anyway, all that to say, I've gotten a lot of comments like this I just disagree that Joel and Ellie's violence somehow makes this a gray area where they're comparable to the people they had to fight for their lives. I hope any of that made sense. 🤣
