It's the "I got you, baby girl" that did it for me. I knew it was coming, but still... my eyes may have leaked a little anyway. Making sure his watch was in the shot was perfection. And Joel, even on his deathbed, is still an absolute weapon. I think they probably downplayed it a lot so they could build up to the last couple of episodes, and that makes people who haven't played the game forget or not really realize how brutal and savage Joel really is. The show has only alluded to it or given us a couple of glimpses. Joel's a beast.

I don't like the change from the game that she had the self-control to end her own hacking spree, because [Part II spoilers ahead] ... ... ... ... ... Showing her have control over her own violence doesn't set up as well the transformation that she goes through in Part II. She wouldn't seem like as much of a pure rage monster when she can tame her inner beast on her own. It also changes the moment at the end of Part II where the memory of Joel is the only thing that takes her out of her rage and lets her spare Abby. In the game, that moment is a callback to the scene with David where it is Joel that comes up and stops her from slashing endlessly, not her own self-control.
@TukaihaHithlec Жыл бұрын
@@dereknolin5986 While I agree that it would have been better to have Joel stop her, I don’t think that’s what was happening at the end of Part II. Spoilers My impression was that in taking care of Lev, Abby was becoming more like Joel, while in hunting her down, Ellie was becoming more like Abby. Part of why Ellie hated Abby so much wasn’t just because she killed Joel, but because she stole her chance to forgive him. Ellie wanted to forgive Joel, and she wanted Abby to not kill him, so in realizing how their roles were replicating, she forgave Abby and didn’t kill her as a way to (metaphorically?) do both of those. That’s why she remembered that moment where she wants to forgive Joel right before letting go.
@dereknolin5986 Жыл бұрын
@@TukaihaHithlec That's an interesting take. Spoilers I just saw her as suddenly remembering that moment where she had wanted to turn away from hating Joel and had opened herself up to the possibility of forgiving him, and that memory suddenly made her aware that there was another option besides vengeance, namely forgiveness. But I think you're right that Ellie saw Abby as a caretaker and so in a sense she saw part of Joel in her, and so in a way by forgiving Abby she was helping forgive Joel. Man, I'm getting excited just thinking about the possible cinematography of that scene out in the bay with the gray and fog! A vaguely related thing someone else pointed out in a playthrough is that in general in the gameplay, Ellie is better at sneaking and Abby is more of a head-on brawler, but in their first fight Abby had to sneak to beat Ellie, and in the second one Ellie had to brawl to defeat Abby. So the game forced them to put themselves in the other's shoes for a moment.

There is no way they wouldn't have tried again to kill him and Ellie. David was fraud and a monster. He looked very happy with his large portion of so called "venison" He smiled as they gave it to him. Knowing exactly what was actually on his dinner plate. He's was very comfortable eating people showing zero hesitation or ounce of guilt. David had no conscience. Cannibalism No Thanks! I couldn't live with myself. Never seen anyone's airways tighten. We always ask and most that claim to be allergic to penicillin will then say they have never taken it or been tested for it, when asked about the allergy. Zombie/infected shows and movies are majority of the time about how humans are the real monsters. I usually don't like a lot of them because of that but I still love this show. I think it's because, unlike e.g. The Walking Dead, most of the intra-human conflicts in The Last of Us are between outsiders, something I have more tolerance for in a survival story, especially when it comes to the protagonists. 17:05 the worst part about this, he said earlier he used to be a teacher, and now he’s preying on a minor 🤮🤮🤮 David’s right hand man, James, was played by Troy Baker, who was the voice actor for Joel in the game. It’s kind of darkly poetic that he is killed by Ellie. 21:30 go back to the first episode when Marlene gives Joel and Tess the job, she says “I know what you’re both capable of.”, to which Ellie asks “what are they capable of?”. Joel is capable of torturous, and even murderous interrogations. That bit after he killed the first guy and says, very calmly, to the second guy “it’s ok, I believe him.” and brings the pipe down… Joel is stone cold. Ellie is the only source of warmth in his life, and vice versa. 21:50 the worst part… I believe that was her husband/father of their daughter.

If you lost in the darkness, look for the light. If Ellie was the light in the darkness, there is not much left of it now. For Joel, it's still enough. He regains his light through her, at the same time she loses hers through this world. Another low point for Ellie and a turning point for her. Here the animal in Ellie came out with her overkill and the experience she had to make. Almost r*p*d and eaten. Here she experiences for the first time the worst abysses in man. I think if you've seen Ellie's past reactions to losses, there wasn't much anger involved. She swallowed Sam's and Henry's death completely. Here in her outburst really everything came out, which was not seen before. There is no way back for her. She will not be the same anymore. The episode is also important for the future. It shows what Ellie is capable of. A dark side in her that people like David recognize. We have already seen this in her. Her slightly morbid side when she tortured the stalker and then kills him (because of Riley). She gets very close to a dead man who has just committed suicide and then laughs as he breaks through the ground. She watches in fascination when Joel beats the soldier to death in episode 1. The constant asking for a gun. This side in her is not dominant but it is there. Another very good change to the game was to show that Joel didn't manage to interrupt Ellie's Overkill. So this scene ran much longer than in the game. Which shows that Ellie does not come to an end so easily when she has started something based on her emotions. Her emotions/charakter don't allow that. This wasn't just an overkill, this was an over-overkill. We learned that David and James use codes when they speak. So it is easy to imagine that they did not spoted a deer but humans. The conversation they had about how much rations they still have was certainly coded. Three human bodies were hanging there. That's what should last another week or two. Then they decided to go hunting after a "deer". The four men David sent out two episodes ago were certainly also on the hunt for people. That's why Joel was directly attacked. Even though David says that only a few people know and he certainly believes that, I think everyone there knows what they are eating. They are all afraid of David and he is their provider after all. No one asks questions because nobody wants to hear the answer, but everyone knows. If you say something, it becomes true. For them, David is God and every time David speaks of God or Father, he means himself. Even the banner in the steakhouse "when we are in need, he shall provides" is nothing more than a reminder to people that it is David who ensures their survival and not God. In the episode about God and faith, David is the devil in human form. The devil seduces, the devil lies, and the devil loves fire. That's why he lets the steakhouse burn. This is the methapher. We're supposed to see who David is. The shot just before Ellie attacks David shows this very well. He stands in a wall of fire. The story David told Ellie by the campfire is certainly not true either. He said they were ambushed by raiders after they fled Pittsburgh. I'm sure they didn't escape them, they ate them and they certainly weren't raiders. He just wanted to have Ellie's trust. He wanted to be her good new "father". The father of the girl Joel killed will always be with her. After all, mommy cooked him well. And of course, David has real penicillin for Ellie. They don't want to eat infected meat. It bothered me at first that none of the people of the city showed up at the end. But of course, the rest of the people didn't realize what was going on. The weather is shit and cold. They will sit in their houses and scrape the remains of the girls daddy out of their teeth. Okay, enough macabre. I also think it's cool and urgently needed that the torture scene actually showed us explicitly how Joel has proceeded over the last 20 years. This was the first time it was really shown why everyone was afraid of Joel in episode 1. This is Joel we know and he liked it. This is Joel when Ellie is not with him. A nice Tess callback from Ellie in the conversation with David. "Your (our) luck had to run out sooner or later." were Tess's words shortly before she had shown Joel her bite. Troy Baker (Game Joel) as James was sensationell good. I didn't think that one day I would have to see Ellie kill Joel. There will be properly another timejump. At the beginning of the next episode they will already be in Salt Lake City. Also, we'll see Ashley Johnson, who was Ellie in the game. Greetings to you. 🤘🙂

This was only up for 10 minutes when I clicked on it! I think this is the earliest I've ever been! Of course I loved Ellie in the game from the start, but this was the event that made me *really* fall in love with her. The fact that she saved herself from Creepy McGee was such a great showcase for her willpower and her inner strength. Such a great (and traumatic) moment for the character. I was so sure when she woke up in that cage that Joel would rescue her, and that just felt wrong. Ellie isn't the damsel in distress type, and I'm so happy about the writers felt the same. Small side note: All the old TV shows my dad has on DVD had either 13 or 24-26 episodes per season. Why do so many of the great new shows only have 9? (I know it's to avoid filler episodes, but I want more, dammit!)

So back in the days before streaming, American TV viewership dropped a lot during the late spring and summer because people would be outside doing stuff instead of cooped up indoors watching TV, so a formula developed where shows start in the fall and ran for a full TV season of 26 weeks, or half a year. Shows hoped to be succesful and reach 5 seasons so they could then be syndicated and show reruns every weekday for half the year. They split the TV season in two and usually stopped showing weekly episodes for a little bit over the holidays, when they were airing Christmas specials and such instead. A half season was 13 episodes, and sometimes a show would get cancelled halfway through, so a new show might take its place and have a short half season for the first season. Each show would usually have 8 minutes of commercials per half hour, so an hour long show was actually only 44 minutes long. 13 times 44 = 572 minutes, or just over 9.5 hours. In the streaming era they've often lengthened episode lengths to run a full hour instead of 44 minutes, with a few extra long episodes. So that's where the 9 or 10 episode seasons come from.

@@dereknolin5986 Wow. Thank you! I knew the TV episodes used to be shorter, but I didn't know all the math of it. But even if we are mathematically getting the same amount of show, I still want more! 😁

@@BubblyRainbows I think they'll be able to make at least two more seasons from Part 2. I really do wish they had made the first game two seasons, though. It feels kind of rushed in some ways.

@@dereknolin5986 TBH, I thought the first game *was* going to be two seasons. It's been quite a while since I played the game, and in my head, I was thinking of the confrontation with Creepy McGee as the halfway point. Clearly it wasn't! I do agree with you about this season feeling a little rushed. It hasn't ruined my enjoyment of the show, but the feeling is there.

This show is so good but if you had played the game you can always tell that the game has much better pacing than the show. I still prefer the game though 😁

There really should be more infected. In this episode in particular. In the game David and Ellie get attacked by Clickers while waiting for James. They have to use teamwork and keep each other alive. It does such a better job at making you question if David can be trusted and sets up the "partnership" he desires. But either because of budget or runtimes they didn't go for it.
@dereknolin5986 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I felt like they played their hand too early by having that menacing scene where David asks his henchman "Are you with me?" It raised your red flags about him too early, whereas in the game you actually began to trust him until that creepy "Everything happens for a reason" moment. And from a pure entertainment point of view, I really do wish there were more action scenes with the infected, even if they don't necessarily move the plot along.

@@dereknolin5986 Kinda feel like the show maybe forgets how much character development was outside the cutscenes. I’m not one of those rabid haters, but I can’t help but wonder how things might be different if Bruce Straley was still involved.

@@TukaihaHithlec They have occasionally included game dialogue from when you're just wandering around, but, yeah, as the season goes on it feels like they've left out a lot of tiny moments that I miss.

When they were fighting the infected in the game. It was a bonding moment and made Ellie question whether he was good or not. But the kind of person David is, that's what he wanted.

I said it early in the series and it still holds true Fight the infected. Fear the living. Every apocalyptic scenario has a bit of truth to it. Everyone will be looking out for themselves. Ellie was amazing in that she used every chance to her advantage. She had her weapon drawn first at the start. She dictated the deal. She protected Joel by giving him a weapon!! She made Daniel think she was going to join him. She pulled the infected card! She used the cleaver to even the odds. She started the fire. Finally, she did something we've all wanted characters in movies or shows to do. After the first strike, she made sure he was dead. Guaranteeing the enemy was dead. First strike and then 21 "make sure" strikes! "It's okay, baby girl." First the recognition that it was Joel. She knew he was alright. She knew she was safe again. Then the four words that squeezed some tears from us. You're allergic to penicillin. You're not allowed to get infected. Addie gets a pass. If it was only that simple. Sunday will be here before we know it, and then even worse, it'll be over before we know it. Then the painful waiting game for the next season. (directors and writers to each other) The viewers think they've had it rough so far.... wait .... for .... it I've never played the game but it feels like that's where it's headed. See you then. Take care, Addie!!
