Schmeeveel Flerkenschtein it’s because people are thinking Korra is Avatar the last Airbender pt 2 when it’s not. And it can’t really be compared to the previous show and should be treated separately. When I first saw the show when it premiered I was angry as hell because I wanted camping in forests and exploring the world but that’s just not how it is. It’s modern, and it’s different and I’ve grown to love it when I stopped comparing the two

Something to note: Nickelodeon really screwed Korra over, since when S1 was made, first of all they only approved 1 season, and the writers had no idea if there'd more seasons approved. Secondly they only approved 12 episodes, 8 less than normal so they had to cram multiple episodes of character development together on top of being able to tell a full self-contained story, all just in 12 episodes. If it feels like it was rushed and wrapped up too nicely, it's because of that; the writers thought this would be it so they ended things in a positive note just in case it was.

Not sure if anyone said it yet but the scene at the end with Korra’s tear falling is confirmed to represent her legitimate thought of suicide since she felt worthless without her bending which triggered the avatar state to save her from herself.
@anothervagabond
@anothervagabond 4 жыл бұрын
It's not just her feeling worthless, it's her knowing that she wouldn't be able to perform the role of the avatar, and knowing that her death would have triggered a new avatar to be born. I think her contemplating suicide was less about her feelings, and more about being willing to do whatever it took to make sure the world had an avatar. Which, of course, would have been disastrous considering the series of events coming up. I think things might have turned out a little differently if seasons 2 through 4 had to be dealt with by a newborn baby.

@@anothervagabond I would have to disagree with the last half of that. If you think about it, the events of seasons 2 were not possible with out the Avatar, and it's the event at the end of season 2 that leads to the problem in season 3, and an action during that season that leads to the problem in season 4. If she had not been around for season 2, the villain's plan would not have been possible, and the events of seasons 3 and 4 wouldn't have happened.
@anothervagabond
@anothervagabond 4 жыл бұрын
@@KageNoOnisu Korra spoilers below the "Read More" ... ... ... ... ... Don't forget that a major part of the events of season 2 was the war between the water tribes, which I'm sure still would have kicked off with or without the avatar. The avatar isn't just about the spirit world, they're also supposed to help keep peace between humans as well. Besides that, Unalaq wouldn't have been able to use Harmonic Convergence to free Vaatu, but he still would have had access to a new avatar, and would likely have been much more successful at grooming them to serve him, so there's a good chance he still would have been able to get the portals open in order to use them for his own purposes, just not as early as he did the first time. That still leads to the airbenders returning, and this time when Zaheer and crew escape they're dealing with a toddler avatar instead of a young adult powerhouse like Korra, which could easily lead to the avatar cycle ending entirely and the Earth Kingdom falling to full-on authoritarian tyrrany with no avatar to oppose Kuvira. And all this is even assuming Unalaq isn't able to find some other way to free Vaatu (likely by having unrestricted access to the avatar and thus to Raava, for example) and taking over as an unopposed dark avatar.
@KageNoOnisu
@KageNoOnisu 4 жыл бұрын
@@anothervagabond A few problems with your theory. A young toddler avatar would not be able to do open the portals, and also the Avatar is not supposed to be told of who they are until their 16th birthday. Korra and Aang were exceptions, each for different reasons. That's a 16 year wait minimum, then additional training is needed before the Avatar would have access to all their abilities, which usually takes years. Avatar Roku was clearly in his 30s by the time he was done with his training. Not to mention it takes the Avatar state to do it. Simply mastering the elements isn't enough. That leaves only the civil war, but start that before getting the next Avatar on his side, and he risks not being able to fool him (next should be earth kingdom and male in the cycle). All of that would have to be postponed for decades. By then, Unalaq is pretty old, and probably not in the best condition for fighting.

It's great that you kept an open mind and liked the show. That's the way to go; see LOK as a different show, not a direct sequel to ATLA. One major difference in the show's structure, is that LOK did not have the luxury of ATLA's three seasons being one long continuous show. The studio only ordered the show one season at a time. This meant writers cannot plan out a long term big story like ATLA, but had to stick to churning out one season at a time, without being certain if the show will get renewed. So with LOK, you end up with a "villain of the season" format, with the seasons not as well connected together.

Let's just hope Stephanie gets through season 2 so she can get to the best parts of LoK: season 3 and 4 Also RE: being a different show: Aang was defined a lot as a character by his relationship with his friends whereas Korra is defined a lot by her relationship (whether at odds or sometimes even in accordance) with the villains. Much like growing up, you try to surround yourself with friends and family but then as you grow up you grow into the larger more adult world and that's how you are shaped thereafter. That's why people were so taken aback at how different the show was. Anyways, hope you enjoy the rest of the show!

It sure is political, but the viewer also has a confirmation bias. That's just something that's innately human and is okay as long as you're aware of it. Meaning, you'll be kinda seeing what you want to see. So you always have to be careful with saying "this part in the show means that...", because what you think you see might not be what the writers meant.

You figure if the Fire Nation was in the early or mid 1800's in tech (steam era), then 70 years later could be the 1920's which is what Republic City is based on. Plus having elemental abilities would definitely speed up progress. Such as the discovering electricity far earlier than we did thanks to lightning bending.

The way I interpreted that statement is based on the fact that in the avatar world there are only two ways of getting lightning naturally: thunderstorms and lightningbending. As we saw in this season, the main way they get their electricity is by employing lightningbenders (like Mako) to run their power plants. I suppose you could argue that they could build lightning rods to collect the electricity naturally during storms, but that's unreliable and probably excessively expensive for the time period the creators were going for (1920s-40s). Hiring people would be cheaper and more efficient. Therefore, the way the Equalists acquire the electricity to power their gloves is by buying lightningbending-produced power. As a result, the Equalists is a group who disavows and demonizes the very people who help give the entire city its modern conveniences and technology, making them inherently hypocritical.

It is so amazing to see such a positive reaction to the series, I am so glad you're enjoying it despite the obvious differences. My biggest issues with the series you probably wont really notice, it was the whole handling of this series by nickelodeon. Besides from the obvious studio interference, it ended up being aired instead once per week, but rather double episodes every two weeks, and eventually it wasn't actually airing on the channel but online only. There's a lot Nick screwed over that crippled this series unfortunately. With that said, this is still in my opinion such an amazing show. I was 18 with this aired so this much darker show,was so up my alley when it came out and I really adore it (obviously it cant compare to the original series, that's like a bazzillion out of 10) but my god do I love this series. Like, Nick, the same channel that was spamming us with spongebob for like a decade also just showed us a straight up murder/suicide, it's just such a darker series and I love it. I'm really looking forward to seeing your reaction to season 3 in particular, I'm sure you'll love it, it's some of the best Avatar content out there, for spoiler reasons I wont say anything more but judging by various comments of yours over the last 4 books, i'm sure you'll love it, especially if you're enjoying this season.

I think some aspects of the technology are a reach but when you think about it, the actual industrial revolution advanced us really quickly, and with stuff like metal and water benders everything would be so much easier to construct. Another thing to think about is that the technology in the fire nation was pretty advanced in atla already like the drill and the airships.

Imo, LoK is a masterpiece just as much as ATLA is. For differing reasons. ATLA; impeccably interwoven storyline. LoK; Amazing character focus on Korra's development and growth. Also I've come to view season 1 of LoK as a set up for how the world has become and the ensuing consequences(good and bad). While season 2 works similar to ATLA season 1. In that they set up what each Avatars core journey would be about.

No. Even if we just look at Season 1, there are four problems which make Korra significantly worse than ATLA: (1) Korra is presented as a brash young woman who needs to learn spirituality - great idea, by the way, to flip the script on Aang - but she never learns spirituality or does the growth necessary to become spiritual. She is literally gifted the powers that spirituality would have awakened in her by random events, not personal growth. She airbends because Amon takes away her other elements. Her bending is restored because Aang visits her after she cries a bit. There is no character growth. (2) Amon's real backstory actually makes him less interesting because he is just a guy taking revenge on behalf of his father instead of trying to right a massive social issue. Why couldn't he have just been a Non-Bender who learned qi-blocking and energybending who was actually abused at a young age by a Firebender? His message of equality was actually a legitimate criticism in ATLA's period. There are numerous times where Toph doesn't count Sokka as a member of the team since he can't bend and this could be explored. (3) While we are told that Non-Benders are unequal, we really don't see it, which makes the Equality Movement just fall flat. (4) Love Diamond and lack of interesting supporting characters.

@Colt James _Oh do you remember when we asked for your opinion. Me neither._ I would ask you the same. This is a worthless non-point. When you say something on the internet, you invite other opinions. _if you can't already see the holes in your arguments it would be a waste of time arguing with you._ Honestly, if you had good arguments against me, you would use them. The fact that you avoid pointing out what would be "clearly obvious" demonstrates that you have no actual good arguments here. _She is considered a pariah of the cartoon community._ Ad hominem. Also, I came to most of the same conclusions as LO long before I watched her rant. I felt many of the same things that she articulated while watching the series, especially how (1) Korra has no emotional growth, even when the pilot makes clear that this is the trajectory for the show, and (2) how the Noatak plotline muddied Amon's much more interesting motivations. To the latter point, I was even willing to believe that there was a cultural zeitgeist of bender supremacism, but that makes the collapse of the Equalist Movement based on the "Noatak Fraud" that much more ridiculous. Real movements based on real issues do not just collapse if the rallying point is a fraud (see BLM and Michael Brown).
@oremfrien
@oremfrien 4 жыл бұрын
@Colt James Given that you wrote 6 whole paragraphs and looked deep into my timeline, you clearly have the time to make your points, but you choose not to. Regardless, I will watch your videos and, for your edification, point out my issues with the first video. _Did you do that to only feel smart because you used a fallacy?_ Your entire argument about LO was conclusory (she nitpicks and does not does not do research) and ad hominem (she's rude and a pariah). Neither of which provides any evidence of why her view is inaccurate. I imagined, probably correctly, that you are unaware of what a conclusory statement is and so I simply pointed out the ad hominem because you would recognize that. Comments on the first video: (0:00-2:28) --Most of this concerns the fandom. This is not relevant to the source material. The one story part he addresses is whether the show is better than the average cartoon and I agree with him that it is better than the average cartoon, but I am not judging it by that low standard. I am judging it based on how well it behaves as a story with the level of depth we would expect from a show in the Avatar universe. (2:28-3:20) -- Asserts that Anti-Korra say (1) she has no development, (2) gets power-ups, and (3) is a Mary Sue. -- The first and second are correct - and I will explain why further on - but she is definitely NOT a Mary Sue. Korra fails quite often. There are numerous characters that dislike her. She has flaws like impetuousness, indecisiveness, and brashness. (3:20-6:00) -- Points out all of Korra's problems and setup -- I agree with him that it was brilliant to setup Korra as the Anti-Aang. My issue was the lack of good payoff. (6:00-7:15) -- Asserts that Korra's learning to airbend to defend Mako shows a change in character (realizing she was not just the Avatar identity) and then admits in the next scene that her character did not change (believes she is still the Avatar identity). -- Aside from his blatant self-contradiction, which shows that the lesson he imagines occurred did not take, this is not the resolution to the conflict we've established. The conflict is that Korra is not a spiritual person, that she is not patient, understanding, or controlled. The resolution, therefore, should be Korra becoming more spiritual, patient, understanding, and controlled. A good resolution in the case of Korra losing her bending would be for her "To look inward and ask herself the big questions. Who is she and what does she want?" - Perhaps even Spirit Iroh helps - In the process of meditation with Jinora, she begins to float and Jinora realizes that Korra is airbending. Through the process of focusing and becoming more spiritual Korra unlocked her ability. That would be rewarding and satisfying. The resolution that MattCMG proposes, of Korra struggling to protect Mako displays no new insight into Korra's character. We established on Day 1 that she is incredibly loyal to her friends, a brawler, and someone who does not give up. By being loyal, brawling, and not giving up despite being down, Korra has not demonstrated any new attribute, but the same ones she demonstrated previously. However, she gets a power-up for "the power of friendship". (7:15-10:00) Argues that Korra's deus ex machina power-up moment at the end of Season 1, which was not earned, was an actual plot element to regress her to being power-obsessed so that she can learn the value of her own spirit in Season 2. -- It's an interesting idea, but it strikes me as less compelling than actually having her grow and develop. It's a needlessly circuitous path to achieve the same goal with many strange moments (like "spirit kaijus" which have no foreshadowing in the lore and deus ex machinas that are neither deserved nor earned). (10:00-11:00) Argues that the Season 3 plotline was interesting from the ideological question of "Is an Avatar necessary?" and Korra has to clean up her own mess. -- And I agree. (11:00-12:00) Argues that Korra's growth is demonstrated by her being able to take down Zaheer or Kuvira. -- This entirely misses the point. We were never worried about Korra's bending abilities or perseverance. We were worried about her lack of spirituality. And this fails to address it. Her conflict is internal, yet the proof of her success is external. This is a problem. The rest was a conclusion reiterating his points but providing no new evidence.

Part of me thinks the reason why Amon seemed a little more passive to bloodbending than tarrlok, was bc he decided to protect his brother from carrying all of yakones expectations to take away the avatars bending and become more powerful than the avatar. Even tarrlok said he was a good natured kid. But, with all of that negativity, it makes sense on how he grew older and seemed to use it to let out his anger and such. Ive never been more triggered than when she said she wasn’t feeling bolin. But i think she started to like him more and more. Bolin is a special boy, and he must be protected. Also off topic but no Katara couldn’t of Bloodbent Azula. Yes Katara was a talented bender, but that doesn’t mean she had the EXTREMELY rare ability to bloodbend without a full moon. Her special gift was her healing. She was known to be the best healer of her time when she was older.

I dont believe bloodbending withoud a full moon is genetic though, show never stated it was (only that yakone family has a history of having very powerful waterbenders in general) so i just feel like its something no one ever trained hard enough to do it before, i mean both tarlok and amon started training bloodbending only during full moon nights them shifted later on to training withoud the full moon to empower them once they got advanced enough to not need it But yeah katara probably wouldnt be able to do it withoud a full moon for lack of training (and generally not liking using it much because its considered "evil"),

Magus i think they tried hinting towards that. By the fact only Yakone and his children were known to be capable of bloodbending without a full moon. Don’t forget that the woman to “discover” bloodbending couldn’t even do this. She spent her whole life mastering the form. I think it would just be pure speculation to say any powerful waterbender could if they took enough time. Sadly all we have to go off is what ATLA and LoK put out, which is very little. But the evidence we do have points to it being a unique trait that is genetic

Korra begins the show as such a talented bender because each avatar is the opposite of the one who came before them, Aang was an airbending prodigy but was slow to learn most other bending (water being the obvious exception), so while Aang was strong spiritually and with air, Korra has a hard time connecting to the spiritual and figuring out air due to her stubborn and more aggressive personality. Although she is a naturally gifted bender in general, the way Aang had to learn the skills and the forms, Korra has to learn the emotional and spiritual foundations.

I still feel like I would love the characters more if they was less love drama etc, I didn't like that it was so focused on this in book 1. I feel like Ozai is such a weak villain character in comparison to some of the Korra villain (But Azula is still best villain in the Avatar univers imo). I like the risks that they took with this show, really changed a lot of things but still did some fan service and recall, it's pretty cool. The lifespan of a bison is pretty long but they get attached to their riders and if their friend dies they retire and just roam or they also die :( I think Appa died around the same time as Aang because they’re so connected :(

the perfect title. "it's different but good" LOK and ATLA are both really good, but they're different. most people prefer the original (including me) but LOK is a good show.

Keep in mind, Toph was literally 11 years old. I know they were doing mature things, but she was still just a kid who wasn't even in the beginning stages of growing up.

there's no official information about how appa died, but a lot of the fans (me include) believes appa probably died with aang, as his animal guide they were kinda stuck together, just like roku's dragon died with him so they both could be together in the spiritual world

I'm so happy you're enjoying it! It's a great show, no ATLA, and it certainly has it's flaws, but still great. Also I feel like it gets better as the seasons progress.

The fans that were mad in general weren't disappointed because it wasn't a direct continuation but because so much of it felt cheap especially the ending. The usual complaints are 1. Korra didn't learn anything to become an Airbender much less a fully realized Avatar. 2. The focus of the season the conflict between benders and nonbenders wasn't addressed they just killed Amon after making him a power hungry hypocrite. 3. Mako was trash for how he treated Asami.4 almost forgot but there were a lot of complaints about wasted time on love triangles and the new sport that could have been better spent on the actual story.

Did you know that Korra was complimenting suicide at the cliffside edge? That is what Aang meant by “hitting our lowest points”. Due to the fact she felt worthless as she would have been an ordinary person with 1 element, and if she killed herself the next avatar would have all 4. I heard it from somewhere from a panel or something. But it does make sense.
