So there have been many fan theories about this movie. One of them being that Ted is actually the Onceler's grandson. Before he turned to greed by his Thneed, he met and feel in love with a younger Grandma Norma. Then at some point in their relationship they had a daughter (Ted's mom). But after he turned greedy, he sent her and their daughter away to Thneedvile where they could be safe and away from the pollution he caused. I mean ya have to admit, Ted looks a very young Onceler, and that would explain how the grandma knew so much about him to begin with. It all makes sense.

Hmm🧐 That’s……..very interesting 🥲
@greenpiersystem Жыл бұрын
I had the same thoughts right in the theater watching for the first time. Ted and Ted's mom have dark hair and a smaller face, but otherwise could fit the same description as the girl who got hit with the Thneed in the park and accidentally made it popular. So I wonder if Norma was that girl. Like Onceler was getting absolutely trashed in the square, but by a stroke of luck (or not-luck, depending on perspective) he managed to hit Norma with the Thneed in anger, and after that set his career into motion, they became a couple. The way the scene landed, it just seemed like THAT GIRL was abnormal. Like she was important to the story without exactly being involved. The girl even acted a bit like Norma later in the movie (she makes similar comments to what she said after getting hit, but with a bit of confidence instead of shyness.) So I was watching it in the theater and was actually expecting a Norma reveal, but this never occurred.

Well the reason why many people don't like the film is because it represents the message very poorly. In the original you never saw the face of the Onceler because it could be anyone even you. but illumantion turned him into a goofy hipster with a face that doesn't even really understand that he's evil and really just wanted to make his family proud. Unlike in the original where he is only out for profit and doesn't stop biggering. The special thing in the original was that at the end the onceler gives the child the seed, says his last words and it ends. It's supposed to mean dear readers or viewers if you dont change something nothing ever gets better. But in the new film there are random car chases and a ready-made ending like hey a happy ending, everything has gotten better, you don't have to change anything (I hope you understand the point and sorry for my bad English if you want to know what The film could have been listen to the song Biggering that was cut from the film).

Honestly the ending is the worst thing about it IMO. The entire point of the original ending, in which the unnamed boy receives the last seed, is that it represents the reader making the choice on whether or not to heed the Lorax's final warning. It ends on an intentionally ambiguous note, with the glimmer of hope that maybe, someday, the Lorax might return if we all work together to create a better tomorrow, even if it'll take time and we'll struggle. Then this version completely throws that out for a wacky action climax and then everyone immediately agrees to plant the seed and help the earth grow, with the only evil one being the big bad evil businessman that they throw away. It completely throws out all of the nuance and subtlety of the original.
@lulystalgianature29682 жыл бұрын
I wish this movie had better reviews and handle the plot better, cause the message is so relevant, now more than ever.
@worthybutter2004 Жыл бұрын
@@legendaccount3247 Yeah, it's like because we see the boy plant the seed and the Once-ler reunite with the Lorax in this version, it almost feels like they're telling us "See? He's saved the trees! You don't have to do anything great for the environment, cause he already did it!" Instead of making us thoughtful, it just says that the problem is easy to solve, when in reality, it wouldn't really be. And as for the other bad guy, O'Hare, his existence in the movie kinda just goes against one of the messages of the book, which was "There is no bad guy". Like, the Once-ler doesn't mean any harm towards the trees, he just gets blinded by ego and greed. So just because someone is greedy for money doesn't automatically make a bad person. They can be someone who have good intentions, but fall flat in other areas. Adding an actual villain, I feel, just gets the story all confused. 🫤 Oh well, Illumination tried with this movie, but it still fell a little flat. They honestly should've sold the movie rights of the book to a different studio imo.

I'm sorry but this movie and the ending is terrible and is so inferior to the book and animated special. For instance in the ending, him having the last seed and walking away with it represents that anyone can make a difference but it's weither or not you actually try and make that difference. This was completely destroyed the idea and message of the book and giving it a happy ending was the worst decision they could have made. It feels like they didn't want to upset the little children that wanted to see a good ending , even though the reality is is that there isn't always a good ending. Bad things can happen to you weither if it was your fault or not, but half the end of the day if you want a happy ending for yourself you have to work for that happy ending which was what the book and cartoon was trying to get across. This movie? Naa let's just given the children their happy little ending and not try and let them think more about choices in life and the faults that come with it! Its stupid is what it is. This movie was pointless, the book and cartoon presented the message in a memorable, kiddish but yet also slightly depressing tone. It's not even just the ending that ruined the message, it's the fact that they showed the Onceler's face and gave him a toxic family which was supposed to make everyone feel bad for him. First of all, showing his face completely ruins the idea that anyone could do something bad. The Onceler having his face hidden showed us that it could be anyone which made him very universal and almost relatable that the 2012 did not do. I know some will say "Oh but you can't hide a main characters face in an hour long movie" Well if that's the case then just don't make the film in the first place! We already have a book and an animated special, so why make another? And finally the Onceler having a manipulative family was just lazy writing. In the animated special there's moments where he wonders what he's doing and why he's doing it and even shows signs that he knows what he's doing is wrong, but he still manages to trick himself that he isn't doing anything wrong. This is very relatable and happens alot to many. In the 2012 film he just has a horrible family that forces him into doing it! Cause that's so relatable and so much more deeper and thought out than what the cartoon special did! Right?? I'm sorry but this is a terrible film that shouldn't have be made. It's erases all the great messages from the book and animated special and has nothing expended on it. Even the way the songs are stupid. In the cartoon it showed us the growth of the Onceler's fame and company but in the new film its just one song and boom it's done. In the song "how bad can i be?" It showed the destruction of the forest and the suffering of the animals in just one song. In the animated special it dragged on more and made the animals feel alot more human and because of that you feel bad. Even the way this new films shows the animals walking away from their now destroyed home isn't done as well. In the book and animated special it showed the animals leaving one by one in their groups and showed us the elements of the forest being destroyed by man. First the bears and how the trees are gone, second the birds and how the sky has become to polluted from the factories and then the fish showing just how uncaring people are for the rivers and just how dirty and unlivable it's become. In the new film it just shows all that in one 3 minute song. Wow how impactful compared to the original book and animatedspecial. I rate this film a 3/10 it ruins the message of Dr Sues on so many ways and over all just should not have been made since we already have two great ways to see this tragic story. The book and the animated special. I can tell ya this much, when I wanna see Dr sues's sad story of a once beautiful forest turned into a hellscape by mankind and how people like us can change that if we try hard, I certainly am not coming back to money grabber of a movie.

While the message is much more direct, simple and stronger in the original, this one does have very nice things going for it. There is the fluffy animation for one. Like the trees looks extremely soft and plush as well as the hair and the Lorax fluff. And though the story is expanded to have more story and a lot of more comical moments, and a lot of extra stuff to make it long enough to be movie length it does have some strong moments. The camera pan around of all the dead land once the last tree is cut still has strong feelings to it. Though the only thing I still question to this day is the time line conuinty. If the Thnead was so popular and the town was named after it... how was it people forgot trees and Thneads so quickly? O'Hare was shown to be a young kid/adult when Thneads felt out of popularity... and there are people clearly older than him in town. So how did peple just forget trees and Thneads so easily? Perpahs it just the life of industry and economy lol.
@mercedeslp2 жыл бұрын
True, I always felt that it was confusing for O'Hare to be there. I mean the Oncler wasn't exactly that old in the movie as well. If you ask me, he looks like he is in his early to mid 20s and O'Hare maybe 16? I wouldn't say younger than that. But then we have the current time where O'Hare seems (at least to me) to be in his 40s. So did only like 30 years pass? That would make the Oncler be about in his 60s, but he looks more like he is in his 70s or 80s. It truly is confusing... Anyway, what I don't understand is how they could cut Biggering... That's a true tragedy...
@RikuKingdomHearts_II2 жыл бұрын
@@mercedeslp That's a good point there. But lol yeah guess the people all got too caught up in consumerism and forgot everything XD Otherwise the writers probably didn't think about that for the actual reason. And I feel that. Sometimes movies cut songs that would've been better. Frozen 2 has Krisoff have a song called "I wanna get this right" and I much prefer it to "Lost in the woods". But that's just me.

this movie is fun to watch as a kid but really weird to think about when ur older bc the whole point of the original lorax story is that consumerism/corporations are destroying the earth which we need to protect for future generations and 'unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better.' but literally when this movie came out illumination decided it would be a good idea to let a car company advertise their new car with an advertisement set to the theme of this movie.

I still like this film despite its issues, but after hearing the deleted songs, I do feel a little cheated. Not only was Ted's original motive much more relatable for a kid (Basically, he just wanted the one thing he couldn't have in Thneedville, which just happened to be a real tree), but Biggering is an amazing song that I wish they hadn't replaced.

I’m not sure why this movie got a bad rep when it came out, I still don’t get is now. I really enjoyed this and the Oncler has to be my favorite in this movie. In all honesty every time I hear the word “Lorax” I immediately start humming or singing “how bad bad can I be-I’m just doing what comes naturally? How bad bad can I be?” Also I’m still confused how a baby Zac Efron voices in this. I can never caught his voice. Even when I saw the behind the scenes of him literally doing his job, I still can’t really see it.

40:41 they do ‘t understand what trees do. They help clean the air, give us food and shade, help gather water, provide leaves and wood for building stuff and are a home to lots of animals. Just like bees, water and the sun, trees are so important to the whole environment that we couldn’t function without it like a remote with no batteries

@jackbluehq6653 Жыл бұрын
@@thecelticdagda Seriously They've tried to make the once-ler a totally innocent guy who was just manipulated into destroying the entire forest Like....NO! That's not the point of the once-ler! He represented how people can easily fall into greed, he wasn't necessarily a cartoonish villain who wanted to see the world burn, he was a representation how anyone can use excuses for why they do terrible things. In the book and the animated film, you hated him but at the same time you could picture yourself or other people in his shoes, and that was the point. Illumination wrote the once-ler to try and victimise the corporations that hurt not only the environment but the people as well. "Oh come on guys, yeah he's destroying the environment and ruining the lives of every animal and humans. But Oh come on ya can't blame him, he was manipulated into it by his family! Surely you can give him a pass for him because of that, right?!" The once-ler in the animated version was a much more fleshed out character, and you really do feel his pain when you see him as an old man living in the world that he created cause of his own greed. And it made the "unless" message by him all the more impactful, because you know its being said by a man that is living in his regret and sorrow, which makes his encouragement to be better than he could be all the more impactful. The fact that the once-ler was "redeemed" with the lorax coming back at the end is bullshit. The lorax wouldn't come back and say he's redeemed himself! The once-ler was a degenerate that sucked the life out of a once beautiful landscape! Seeing the Once-ler in the book and animated film as an old man was again more impectful because you know he's a man who's done to much harm that he can ever erase, so in his last attempt to fix what he did he gave the seed to the boy, in a last hope that maybe the world he destroyed, the world he is constant remained off, can maybe come back. That's the message of the book "Unless someone like you cares awhole awful lot, nothing is gonna get better. It's not" that was a perfect message for kids. Either you put in the effort yourself, or nothing better will come. And the book and animated film ended on a cliffhanger, will the boy help the world or will he fail? Its up to the viewer to decide because the message is directed at them. God I hate this fucking 2012 version, ruined the message and everything that was good about the book and 1970 version

I try to understand why people dont like The Onceler in this movie but I really love how the writers wrote his character. The writers really humanized The Onceler and I appreciate it. He wasn't born greedy, nobody is, he became greedy through his own ambition and the influence of his family. Say what you want about the movie. I believe that the way he fell fits well with his character and how his family treats him. The Onceler isn't a monster. He is a human being that was consumed with greed. It can happen to anyone, and I appreciate that message.
